SUSE/Novell has announced that non-GPL kernel modules will no longer be part of future Novell products. Since SUSE Linux 6.3, AVM has been providing pre-compiled drivers for SUSE Linux. Since the release of SUSE 8.1 in September 2002, AVM drivers have been integrated into SUSE Linux distributions. Each time a new SUSE Linux Version beta cycle starts, AVM provides the latest drivers and Karsten Keil does an excellent job integrating those drivers. Therefore, a new SUSE Linux release goes hand in hand with the latest AVM driver development. He could use ISDN fax G3, analog modem emulations or simply surf the internet via DSL/ISDN right away out of the box. For most users, that is the most important point in the distribution decision process. "Easy to use and right away surf the internet", that is the feedback we receive from our customers, when they visit AVM at fairs. The market share SUSE gained over past years is also based on SUSE's user-friendly policy of AVM driver integration. For six years now this strategic partnership with SUSE/Novell payed off for all parties. With Novell's decision to have non-GPL drivers no longer integrated, AVMs drivers will not be included on the distribution media anymore. The customer then needs to have an internet connection to download AVM's drivers or other packages. But without drivers the customer cannot download anything from the internet. conclusion This process will lead to our no longer being able to provide driver packages to the end user with a new SUSE/Novell box release. Our driver build and QS process will be subsequent to the box release instead of parallel to the beta cycle. The process is extended. Moreover, if the Novell decision is implemented as stated, the unique selling proposition of the SUSE Linux Distribution is diminished. And ultimately this decision will generate more support for both of us. This mail is not intended to provoke a discussion of open vs. closed source. Kernel Changes / km_, kmp, and kernel-flavor-nongpl packages: ============================================================= We added support to cleanly handle packages that contain kernel modules by representing the dependencies of mouldes on the kernel ABI as rpm dependencies. This allows third party modules to be provided and integrated cleanly. Modules that were previously included in our kernel packages using the km_ package mechanism [1] have been converted to the new package format [2]; the km_ mechanism is no longer supported. Packages that contain additional kernel modules are now named name-kmp-kernelflavor (e.g., wlan-kmp-default. lirc-kmp-smp). The kmp mechanism [2] supports creating and using additional Kernel Module Packages easily and reliably. The kernel-kernelflavor-nongpl packages which contained modules that had non-GPL licenses have been removed. [1] The km_ package mechanism is described at http://www.suse.de/~agruen/kernel-doc/. [2] Kernel Module Packages Manual for CODE10, http://www.suse.de/~agruen/KMPM/ Major Bug in Beta3: Fontconfig ============================== It might be that X11 apps just crash or are really slow (installation of some packages took rather long), which was due to a bug in fontconfig. A first fix is in fontconfig packages in the Beta3 fixed-rpm directory on ftp.opensuse.org . Beta4 will fix most known bugs. Current packages are available at: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/m17n/10.1 - If you use them, update to both fontconfig and fonts-config. The packages in there are newer than what is currently in the FACTORY tree. If you find bugs in the m17n packages, please report them in bugzilla stating the exact version you're using. Package Manager Major Changes ============================= We're replacing our package manager resolver library with a new version called "libzypp". libzypp is the integration of SUSE's yast2 Package manager and Ximian's libredcarpet. At Novell we used two solutions so far - Red Carpet and YaST package manager - and decided to merge both in a best of breed approach. The advantages for SUSE Linux are: * A better resolver than before * More information about why a package is installed or no solution is found * A better integration of all those feature that were added over the years to our package manager. * A command line interface ("rug") * A common handling of packages *and* patches * Dependency handling for update packages * A better way to handle selections (we call them now "patterns") * Remote management (not yet in SUSE Linux 10.1) * Additional repositories during installation (no GUI in SUSE Linux 10.1) * More flexibility in handling of different repositories, e.g. it is possible to have additional patterns for each repository. The new library handles yum metadata, YaST sources (both also remote via ftp, http, nfs and smb) and additionally Zenworks, Opencarpet and RCE (Red Carpet Enterprise) servers as installation sources. The alternatives smart and apt-get will also work as they did on SUSE Linux 10.0. Together with libzypp, we get the zmd daemon, the rug command line interface, the zen-updater, zen-remover, zen-installer packages. In addition to the existing packages, we're adding these new packages: * zmd: system daemon used by rug, zen-* * rug: Command line client * web-updater: Updater with more features than zen-updater * zen-updater: Simple updater * zen-remover: Tool to remove packages * zen-installer: Tool to add packages We're still working on the integration of "libzypp" into our tree, the package manager in our FACTORY tree is not yet fully functional. XGL === Xgl is an Xserver that uses OpenGL for its drawing operations. Xgl engineer David Reveman has posted enhancements to Xgl and a new compositor, 'Compiz' with a request that it be added to the freedesktop.org CVS repository. Some operations like antialiased font rendering is noticeably faster with this technology, and future graphics hardware might only have support for 3D operations and no 2D core any more. These additional packages have now been added to the SUSE Linux FACTORY tree. Note that compiz has a couple of build problems that need to be fixed before it will go out. Hardware database (Would be very useful)

All, Especially SuSE people, I forgot to ask something at the FOSDEM. I notice when i have a bug. That you (understandably) don't have the same hardware in the house. So i was wondering if it might be interresting to have a database with all hardware of all beta testers in it. So you can ask an other beta tester to do a test. I have currently a bug that most likely looks like a kernel bug. But I'm not 100% sure. Therefor it would be great if there would be someone around who could do the same test(s). XML File for repositories

On FOSDEM in the speed talks, I held a speed talk about an XML file for YaST and other repositories. The presentation can be found here: http://en.opensuse.org/XML_File_for_repositories until there is an official place for FOSDEM presentations. This discussion is about the layout of the XML file and also about what SUSE already has in place or is planning, so an easy integration is possible. So any feedback on that is welcome. An extremely basic proof of concept in PHP can be found on http://houghi.org/mirrors/main.php (DON'T USE THE DATA. It is not complete and most likely incorrect) the directory holds all the files and php files are copied as php.txt as well. So what we need is to define what the layout of the XML must be. What must go in it and what not. Any feedback is welcome. Example XML files and php pages for proof of concept can be sent directly to me. So please let all know what your ideas are. People with a Tyan Tiger s2460 mainboard

All, I would like to know if there is anyone out there who has a Tyan Tiger S2460. I have a problem with it in combination with opensuse 10.1 b2 and up. It craches with EC((C) scrub) enabled in combination with ecad. I have 2 512MB ECC DIMMS onboard slot 0 en 1. Regards, Joop. I liked the FOSDEM very much. Especially the new build service making your own yast modules. And outside opensuse the XEN presentation. I hope there will be a tutorial or followup for the building of the Yast modules. So one can also create unversial Yast modules (to langauges) and to let it work with autoyast.

Desktop Icons for KDE

It's never too late for a new feature (C) Novell :-) I just saw, that under Gnome, you get a new icon for every external drive attached. This _very useful_ feature was killed from KDE some SL versions ago, when the new "My Computer" icon was introduced. Could we have back the icons for removable media per default in KDE, too? Who likes them, who does not? Is there any technical problem doing so? a2ps paper format depends on $LANG

Dear all, I just run into a "funny" problem witch a2ps. In germany we have usually A4 paper. So using a2ps <filenam> is o.k. Now I had to set LANG=en_US.UTF-8 now a2ps prints to letter format. During install of a2ps there shold changed line 17: Options: --medium=LC_PAPER to Options: --medium=A4 Reason: Papersize has to depend on installation and not on users language. The paper format is usually set by tha admin. -- Joachim

Smart and rpm hangs

If I will to make a full upgrade via smart, with more than 1000 packages, smart uses a virtual memory size of more than 1300 MB, and locks the system If I use rpm for the upgrade (with the downloaded packages via smart), frequently it locks with the message: warning: waiting to reestablish exclusive database lock I mean that the lock comes from the proces query-system, because in the same time it uses a high cpu percent. java debugging broken (==awfully slow)

Hi, Debugging Java programs is broken on newer kernels (>2.6.14). Stepping over simple statements becomes awfully slow, without using any cpu or disk activity. Further, tomcat cannot be stopped with "service tomcat5 stop" (or maybe i'm not patient enough, it could be that it takes ages, but usually it is stopped in a few seconds on my machine) and has to be killed. the only thing i found on the web regarding this, is a kml -mm post regarding JBuilder debugging, with no solution to it, and a thread on intellij.net http://www.intellij.net/forums/thread.jsp?forum=27&thread=195506&tstart=0&t… which reports that downgrading to 2.6.14 helps. This is on a current Suse-factory installation, with 2.6.16-rc4-3-default on x86_64. Should i file a bug report with sun, novell or the kernel guys? regards, erwin

Hello all I can't install SUSE 10.1 b5 under Vmware (VmwareWorkstation-5.5.1-19175) I get an error during when install SUSE 10.1_b5 under Vmware under "Graphics Cards" entry on "Hardware Configuration" screen # Error Message "ERROR: No proposal". beta4 and VMware

Hello, I have a strange problem when installing beta4 into VMware 4.5.2: CD1 and CD2 are installed without problems, but CD3 is not recognized - YaST keeps asking for it. I use the ISOs and connect them to /dev/hdc in VMware. This may be related to one of the "most annoying bugs" ("The CD 1 needs to remain in the cd drive [...] Otherwise the installation of packages from CD 2-5 will fail afterwards.") - but I'm not sure because it fails with CD3. Is this only a variant of the already known bug or should I file a bug report? I downloaded openSUSE 10.1 beta4 and all the packages for Xgl and it does not work with my Xelo FX5200 (nvidia propriatery driver works fine thoe). I followed the instructions from http://www.opensuse.org/Xgl . Here are some outputs: # compiz --replace gconf compiz: No composite extension munja:~ # rpm -q compiz compiz-0.0.2-3 # gnome-window-decorator gnome-window-decorator, Failed to load shadow images When I rebooted machine, X wouldn't start. YaST trying to install ppc.rpm on x86

I opened up YaST Software Management to install pwgen. It complained that it failed to install pwgen...ppc.rpm I have a honest x86_32. What made YaST think that it should have anything to do with ppc? I hesitate to file a bug because the Software Management is still quite broken. I'll try specifically the same thing in beta5.

I raised this point at the IRC Meeting last night and was asked if I could take it to the open-factory list and ask Kurt Garloff if he has any information on this subject. What is required: We need some "positive spin" on the situation. Is it possible to have an update on this change, giving some information on which commercial partners are supporting this change and actively working to produce userspace binaries or OSS drivers? Obviously if some of the work is done under NDA's information will be limited, but information on the number of suppliers actively working on solutions and some key names if possible (like nVidia, ATi, Intel etc.) would be helpful and quell a lot of the speculation that is currently going on in the lists. What is *NOT* required: More flaming, bad mouthing or generally spreading FUD! We already have had 2-3 discussions on the negative side of the change. Please do not add this thread to the list, if you have something generally negative to say about the change, please use the existing threads. Background: The removal of the binary Kernel modules has, so far, been poorly communicated to end-users. There is little or no information forthcoming on how this will directly affect end users and what alternatives are being put in place to mitigate the change. On the negative side, we have had people like the AVM developers in the press and coming onto the list, raising more doubt and uncertainty by stating this is forcing them to abandon development/support for Linux drivers - this although there are several alternatives available, including open-sourcing parts of the driver and/or moving to userspace for the binary only drivers/parts that can't be open sourced. The problem is, users are used to installing SUSE Linux and ending up with a working system with little or no work required (E.g. checking a button during the initial YOU update to enable dual-head and 3D support on their nVidia cards, and NIC's and modems working from the get-go so that they can download updates, patches and any additional drivers) and they want re-assurances that they will be able to continue to upgrade to newer versions of SUSE Linux and their PC's will still work... Software Remover

BUG 152085 - Installation Sources 10.1 Beta 4

With Beta 4, I have the problem that the Installation Sources section of YAST doesn't remember the sources I enter. After initial install, the list of sources is empty (not even the install CD is listed). If I enter the CD, Factory and other sources, clicking on the Finish button "erases" them, and looking at sources again shows that there are none. Going into Software Management, I can then, obviously, only delete installed packages, as SM cannot find any additional packages. This is frustrating as I can't update to factory or otherwise search for new packages without manually downloading and installing the individual packages. Is there a temporary workaround, i.e. can I directly edit a configuration file to add the sources so that I can use the software manager to install packages? (and if so, which file?) Has this been addressed in Factory/Beta 5 and would I be better to wait until I download the delta ISO's for B5? Dave -- "I got to go figure," the tenant said. "We all got to figure. Stupid bug, but with great potential: kmix

I'd like to point out a lame bug that has good chances of being overseen and making it alive in the final release. This would cause a great deal of traffic on suse-linux-e, with the same question asked all over again by frustrated users. kmix is not working in first login after installation. It has a red "disabled" sign. Users will think their soundcard was not detected and attempt reinstallation and all sorts of fixing. Second login, or after restart, kmix is working but is muted (!). Unmutting it still won't be enough to produce sound because the sliders for headphones and PCM are at 0. I can only imagine the kilometers of thread about not being able to play shit, no sound, no mp3, SUSE sucks etc. So, please, please, nice and pretty please fix this :-) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=144525 Ugh, could anyone confirm the bug? Or is it only for my particular hardware (i915)? It has been manifesting since beta1, I think.

People have some problem finding the boot.iso (and the boot.ppc.iso) as they are looking in the iso directory. Would it be possible to siftlink these two files? Size of the 6 CD version

How large will the 6 CD version be in total? I asume (hope) that the 6th CD is in the same layout as the other 5. Partitions mounted in /media, data directories off /

Hi, I noticed with Beta4 that my partitions outside my fstab are automatically mounted inside the /media folder. I also notice that there appears to be several /data[x] directories, I think these existed in previous versions. I was hoping someone could give me a few details about these, specifically answers to these questions: 1. Do the mounted /media/disk[x] folders roughly correspond (the [x] appears to be numbered differently) to /data[x]? 2. If so, is there a reason for both to be there? 3. From this base install, I was able to run yast to install more software (BTW, the beta 4 warning about leaving CD1 in the drive applies to any time you go to add software--when I started yast with a different CD in the drive, it didn't see any packages). Here's what I did; I imagine the same thing would work during the install: When I got the first error about the CD (I think it was some kind of media error), I switched over to another terminal, and looked in /var/log/YaST2/y2log. That's where you can find where it's trying to mount the CD (for example, /var/adm/mount/AP_0x0000000). What worked for me is doing "mount /dev/hdc /var/adm/mount/AP_0x00000007", clicking OK in the CD dialog, and then umounting /dev/hdc when it asks for the next one, and mounting the new one on that same mount point. The one problem with this approach is minor, but annoying: the count of remaining packages will not be updated as you're installing, so you have no idea how much time is left. - Brian

Hostname not set correctly w/ Traditional Method (networking)

I did a beta4 network installation (ftp). No DHCP server, I have specified the IP with hostip=192..../24 I have set the hostname and the installation completed as usual. But after booting the hostname was "192". Setting it again with YaST fixed it. Does anyone know if this is already in bugzilla? I searched, but still not sure. Wouldn't want to file a dupe.

Serious concerns about font rendering regression

Hi, since 10.0, I noticed a regression with the font rendering quality, especially the kerning is degraded, compared to 9.3. The situation persists with 10.1 (or even got worser). I already filed a report against 10.0: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=133086 only to realize, that I'm soliloquizing. What I've learned from trying to fix the problem myself is that fontconfig and possibly qt3 uses an unofficial API from treetype2 to render stuff, and had a hard time to adjust freetype2 cvs to provide the hooks. Unfortunately, I suffered from some crashes using it (could be unrelated), but not enough time to examine the reasons, thus reverted my local changes that time. For what is worth it, I'm using the "Bitstream Vera Sans" truetype font for all sans serif uses. Getting back on topic, I hadn't compared 10.0 with 10.1, but 9.3 with 10.1, and besides a much worser kerning, bold glyphs are notedly less detailed (zugelaufen). Does nobody noticed this regression and is concerned, too? It could be, that I'm picky in this respect, but font rendering quality is a very important factor in user experience and acceptance. Pete

Hi, I want to reply to a message which was sent to list when I wasn't subscriped to it. So I send my reply now as a new message, I hope it will not break the thread structure to much. Sorry! I'm very pleased for explanation of details in the mail from s.schmidt(a)avm.de about the closed-source driver problem. I can understand that a leading company like AVM can't open source its intellectual property and know-how. I understand that its easier und more flexible to do some functionality in software than in hardware. But what about putting this algorythms in the upgradeable firmware of the devices? Ok, I can understand that current devices are not prepared for doing this, but could this be a solution for future products? Things like fax or modem emulation could be done in the binary firmware of the device an the drivers could be kept simple an open source. You have to open no know-how to public or competitors because it will stay closed in the device's firmware. I'm currently not affected by the disscussion because although am using ISDN as primary net-access, I'm using a Bluefritz USB in combination with Bluefritz AP-X that seemes to work with open-source drivers. All ISDN-related things seemed to be done by firmware and I think this could be a solution for other devices. I've to clearify that I'm not a programmer, hardware designer or ISDN-expert (so I may be completely wrong), I'm just a very pleased user of AVM's devices who's hoping that a solution will be found. Installation Sources not remembered

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=152085 Having a problem adding additional repositories, I can enter them, but upon closing the dialog with Finish, they seem to be automatically deleted (opening Installation Sources a second time shows the list is empty, including no entry for the CD's). Trying to enter the sources again causes the dialog to crash. Restarting X seems to fix this problem, but I still can't get the sources to stay. Using the Software Manager only shows installed packages, it is not possible to add additional packages because all the sources have been deleted. Dave

Using Atheros driver in Beta3/Beta4

For those have Atheros-based wireless cards and can't use them because the nongpl modules have been removed in Beta3/Beta4, here are some instructions to easily get them working: 1. Go to the madwifi site and download the latest driver: http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-ng-current.tar.gz 2. Create a SUSE build script from: http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/Distro/SuSE 3. Install the sharutils-4.6-2 (CD-3) and kernel-source (CD-5) RPMs. 4. Unpack the madwifi drivers, copy the build script into that directory, and execute. 5. Use NetworkManager or the ifup scipts to manage your wireless card. It takes all of 5 minutes to accomplish! Kirk Coombs

Is there anything that replaces installation_sources AND is installed as default AND can be used in scripts?
