Xgl - openSUSE 10.1 beta4
I downloaded openSUSE 10.1 beta4 and all the packages for Xgl and it does not work with my Xelo FX5200 (nvidia propriatery driver works fine thoe). I followed the instructions from http://www.opensuse.org/Xgl . Here are some outputs: # compiz --replace gconf compiz: No composite extension munja:~ # rpm -q compiz compiz-0.0.2-3 # gnome-window-decorator gnome-window-decorator, Failed to load shadow images When I rebooted machine, X wouldn't start. I got the following output: xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.3884 dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/xorg/modules/xgl/libglx.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Fatal server error: No GLX modules loaded dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/xorg/modules/xgl/libglx.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory FatalError re-entered, aborting No GLX modules loaded /usr/X11R6/bin/xinit: Server error. --------------------------------------- I had glx in my xorg.conf enabled. When I removed xgl rpm packages, X started successfully. If it's possible to make Xgl work on my hardware, any help would be highly appreciated :) Thanks. Cheers! -- Igor Jagec

It looks like you didn't accurately follow the instructions at http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl 1.) Please use the Xgl and compiz packages that are delivered with Beta4 (the links in the wiki might be outdated). 2.) Follow the instructions one by one -- e.g. you obviously didn't restart X11 after you installed Xgl and changed DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager -- did you do that at all? Regards Christoph

If you install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers after you install the Xgl server, the installation script will remove that file. Run "rmp -V" on the Xgl package. It happened to me while testing beta3. Re-install the Xgl server package and try again. I couldn't get it to work. I could manage to get the X server to run but it didn't have the GL extension that compiz requires, "texture" something. (and I did follow the instructions accurately.) -- Rafael

I installed nVidia driver first. I followed instructions from this mailing list (patching the driver and so on) and that went ok.

Hm... I'll try to do it again, as soon as I reboot my machine (internet does not work on oss 10.1 beta4 because of rt2500 bug). -- Igor Jagec

I got no output there but I reinstall xgl package and it works!!! Thanks mate!!! I can say just one thing: It really rocks!!! It still eats lots of cpu while draging a window, but I suppose that's because of early stage of development. And nvidia drivers are probably not optimised for Xgl. But I hope that all will become stable until the end of the year :)

We probably had the same problem. -- Igor Jagec
I forgot to mention one more thing: After rebooting the system, compiz and gnome-window-decorator have to be restarted manually, or to make startup script which will to that for us. The easiest way is to use gnome-session-properties tool.
I've given Xgl another try and got it to run. Unfortunatly when compiz is started al windows turn black. If anyone is experimenting with this, please add your comments to: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=152344 -- Rafael

Did you try to run compiz with minimum of options? I installed nVidia drivers first (as you recommend me), then Xgl as it is described on openSUSE site, and everything works ok. The same situation with Ubuntu. So the only problem I had is with nVidia driver since it conflicts with Xgl package. -- Igor Jagec

Yes I did that, first the NVIDIA drivers, then xgl. There is a problem with xgl and my card, just running the X server by itself shows the wrong colors. So it doesn't seem like a compiz-only problem. -- Rafael

I have the same problem -- Enable XGL and all windows are black. This is without even bringing compiz into the picture. I can enable the KDE composite (under window behavior) and this get rid of the black and works fine. Kirk

Here those problems are gone with the newest XGL version (to be synced out?). Bye, Steve

With the next sync I guess, it was checked in yesterday, so should be soon on the server... Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
I have an IPM Pentium 4 "ThinkCenter" box. OpenSUSE 10.0 currently running on it. OS10.1 Beta 4 gets just past the opening selection, successfully finishes installing the usb-storage modules (although there are no actual USB devices attached), then stops with the red popup saying that it can't find the Installation CD. The system has an SATA-attached hard drive and a PATA-attached CD. The install proceeds correctly as late as OS10.1 Beta 3, so this is something new in the 10.1 Beta 4 kernel. Should I go ahead and open a bug report? -Scott Garfinkle

Should I go ahead and open a bug report? I think you should. I had the same problem with a Acer laptop 30 minutes ago.
SATA controller with PATA devices attached. YaST says: No CDROM device found. Does it help to pass option "irqpoll" to the installation kernel's command line? Cheers. l8er manfred
I got a very odd response back from the screen team:
This is a known issue. Don't remove CD1 until YaST asks you about CD2. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 153073 ***
This does not seem to describe my problem.

Regrettably, this is not even an option in the IBM BIOS. For sure, the BIOS is reporting this as CD; however, I suspect that, for some reason, the IDE driver isn't even loading. I guess I'll have a look at the latest kernel changes. I think some stuff just recently went in that changes the ATA core drivers.

I did. Clearly.

I got no Xgl packages in Beta4. Or I did? I searched the whole media and I found nothing. I can't access to updates or some extra repos since my wireless cart (rt1500), and I didn't manage to install older oss10 kernel. I found only iso images for beta4, not (extra) repos. Anyway, here's what I downloaded from the link above: # ls *rpm | sort compiz-0.0.2-3.i586.rpm libsvg-0.1.4-5.i586.rpm libsvg-cairo-0.1.6-5.i586.rpm xgl-cvs_060214-2.i586.rpm

Yes, I did all that. Maybe the problem is in my FX5200 card? I saw that recommended is GF6600. -- Igor Jagec
