On these two update sessions, I had three (3) signature check messages, two at the beginning of the session and one much later: This later one is still there after the last update: signature check failed for packman-iu-bremen.de/suse/10.1 (it come again because I didn't check the square box. but I as surprised to have one in place of 3 messages - so long so good) then a third update with some stuff. only one error message, a little faster, but still at the beginning an empty windows, like a freeze (but I had only to wait) Well, I'l restart kde to see if it works and report :-) (done, it works) On the two last sessions I had no message about kde. see you soon (I EXPECT :-) - it did :-) but do I need the patch? and why conflict? I would like to report the results and share my opinion. 10.1 runs well on older hardware once installed and zmd is turned off and beagle is only run at time one is not on system. It is actually faster than 10.0. System details. 666 P III with 128 MB RAM (Old but very usable even with Open Office *) I have two of these machines that I was running UnixWare 7.1.4 with reliant HA. So the systems are pretty much identical. For the test I downloaded all inst-source and non-oss-inst-source and packman to a SUSE 10.0 machine and set up a private network with public Class C IP addresses see diagram below. Fresh instalation of 10.1 4.5 hours to get all the same selections as in update, then 12.5 hours to complete installation. Comparisom with ZMD and without in KDE. 1, 10.0 1-3 minute to bring up installation source window. 2, 10.1 beta 3-4 1-3 minute to bring up installation source window. 3, 10.1 1.5-2.0 hours to bring up installation source window No ZMD. 4, 10.1 4.5-6.5 hours to bring up installation source window with ZMD. 5. 10.1 smart 3-10 minute (smart --shell) no ZMD 6. 10.1 smart 1.75-2 hours (smart --shell) with ZMD 7. 10.1 using smart to do uprade or update cache or packages 5+ minutes, I am able to work on other system via ssh, other windows limited responsiveness while smart is working. 8. 10.1 with ZMD Using YaST forget every thing leave system. Mouse will move at times, but not all the time nothing is possible. 9. 10.1 no ZMD 5-15 minutes to exit. 10. 10.1 smart upgrade 35 minutes 11. 10.1 after smart upgrade of 9jun06 patches 3.5 hours to exit. 12. 10.1 with ZMD 6.5-8.5 hours to save source window 13. 10.1 with ZMD patch installation 8+ hours 14. 10.1 after smart upgrade with ZMD running able to use other ssh window, but with hesitations. * zmd has been shutdown (/etc/init.d/novell-zmd stop) My 2 year old laptop 2.0GHz Celeron with 512 MB Memory 1. 10.0 update to 10.1 9 hours to update from the same souce above. 2. 10.1 with ZMD 1.5-2.5 hours to bringup installation source window. 3. 10.1 with ZMD 2.5-5.5 hours to save installation source. After Update 9 Jun 06 1. 10.1 with ZMD 15 minutes to brinupg installation source window. 2. 10.1 with ZMD 1.5-3.5 hours to save installation source window**. **Often error about ZMD and not able to sync sources. So I do see improvment. Hello :-) You have made a very good job and looks like the most important problem with zen an his companions are gone. I think really you should think of making a patch disk for the main branch. I understand you can't change what is on the cd/DVD. So you should make a patch iso cd. Problem with Sound and Suspend

Shuttle XPC, SB Audigy LS If I make a Suspend-to-* and Resume, I have no sound as user, only as root. After little work, I found out, that before Suspend permissions under /dev/snd are set to crw------ 1 marcel audio 116 After resume they are set to crw-rw--- 1 root audio 116 Driver issue? Powersave problem? Another problem is, that the output is alwasy set to the digital out. before filling a bug report, I ask to see if this is normal behavior. it's related to usb mass storage. I have the same thing with one usb key and one usb hard drive, so this may be general. say we start with no usb folder in /media. 10.1 stock (AFAIR) * you connect an usb mass storage, for example an usb key. _named_ mass storage (dunno if it's the same if not named), for example an usb key that got name from XP (vfat). *Kde give an advertisement window, I key "annuler" (cancel?). * The name is used by Hal to create a mount point. * Hal copy there a null size file named ".created-by-hal". * Hal mount the key there. the copied file don't show (it's on the host file system, not on the key). * you unplug the key. * the created directory keep resting there with a file in it. * if you plug again the key, it's mounted on the very same directory. Thats nice. But... it's not so smart :-) if, by old habbit you create the given directory before hand, or inadvertently delete the ".created-by-hal" file: _the main problem_ * next time you plug in the key, hal _don't use this directory_ (probably thinking it has an other goal) and create a new "name-1" directory. So far, so good... but the "service" in Konqueror don't know of this unusual naming. There you access still the key by "name" (not "name-1"), but read-only - I had a hard time understanding why I couldn't write there :-). The /media/name-1 directory works as expected (rw); But you have -a /media/name directory empty (nothing mounted on it) -a Konqueror service/name keeping saying the key is there, read only -a /media/name-1 directory with the actual key data _minor problem_ * suppose all goes well, you never create any usb directory yourself nor delete any file, you have several usb directories in /media, waiting for a key to be plugged. * you plug a key.. all is well. * you copy important data to this key and want to ensure the data is there before unplugging. Would it be possible/feasible to change the messages presented in Software Updater to read "Getting update list..." while fetching the info then change to "Parsing medadata..." and finally "Incorporating medadata..." before is shows whether there are updates? This would at lease show that it is doing something. It was running successfuly from a script, but now it prints "getting file list..." and sits there for hours if I let it. Eyeballing the switch activity indicates no traffic is flowing. We're currently pushing out an update to the package/patch management stack and I'm asking for additional testing. The previous repository did not show any new bugs but we fixed a couple of more bugs and made this time a repository with a real patch in it for testing. Please read the text below for instructions. For testing the update stack do the following steps as root: * start yast2 installation source via the yast2 control center or directly as "yast2 inst_source". Add as additional software catalog: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/10.1-packagemanagement-update-test (or use one of the mirrors once they are updated) and then leave the module via "Finish". It will take some minutes to download data and setup the catalog. IMPORTANT: If you tested my old sources already, you need to download the metadata again (this is not needed afterwards anymore, it's one of the fixes in this new update). Skip this step and go to the next one: * start yast2 online update via the yast2 control center or directly as "yast2 online_update". The patch summary should show a couple of patches and select only the "libzypp update" (with a black mark). Press "Accept" to apply the update. It will take some time to download packages and install them. * You can now remove the software catalog you added in the first step. Use "yast2 inst_source" and delete the catalog. * Restart zmd with "rczmd restart". * Restart the zen-updater applet on your desktop (it will stop itself since zmd gets stopped during the update). * Everything is set now. You can now install further patches with: - the desktop applet zen-updater - the command line tool rug (via rug patches;rug in -t patch <patchname>) - yast2 online_update zen-updater will inform you about new patches. We will really soon release now this as official update and therefore need your testing. The only fix I'm waiting for is the following: Bug 180698 - zen-updater always shows patch dhcp (basically if a patch has been issued twice, it is always shown in zen-updater) IMPORTANT: Please report *all* bugs in bugzilla.novell.com and *always* CC hmuelle(a)novell.com (Harald Müller-Ney) on the bugreport and mention that you're using AJ's updated package stack from 2006-06-02.
