Submit request for package qgis for inclusion in Leap 15.3

Hi, qgis is quite a popular application and even the de-facto standard open source GIS software, I guess. So it would be great to have it in Leap, also. Maintainers seem to be in favor of an inclusion, too. It doesn't help, nor do I believe it satisfies the GPL to require a online, vendor-specific build service to make use of the provided sources. [opensuse-factory] package to be orphaned soon: firebird

Hello, the openSUSE firebird package is going to be orphaned soon and anyone willing to maintain it is welcome to take over. Short term, there shouldn't be much trouble with it, except for the fallout of what happens in openSUSE Factory project. The 3.0.7 point release is already in Factory and the next 3.0.x release is expected in about half a year. I don't expect much complications with future 3.0.x point releases. Upgrade to version 4 will be more tricky as the upstream ICU detection code has been reworked and will require some effort to adapt for openSUSE ICU packages versioning and soname tweaks. But firebird is not exactly known for rushing new versions so that there should be enough time to work this out. The background: as I learned on Wednesday, Dominique Leuenberger plans to add more checks for openSUSE Factory packages and two of them would break the build of firebird package. As he insists the build breakage must be resolved in a way I find unacceptable, I decided to step down as the package maintainer once the build is broken. I wanted to go on maintaining the package as long as possible but as Mr. Leuenberger insists that I should announce my stepping down now and he even invited another person who went as far as accusing me of "failure to conduct oneself following the norms of our communities" and "breach of SUSE's Open Source Policy", I changed my mind. I have had enough bad experiences with that person in the past and having to deal with him again is something I would be happy to avoid. Thus I'm sending this announcement now even if there is no technical reason to give up the maintainership yet. Michal Kubecek

New Package Submission: sampler

Dear openSUSE Community, I have just submitted a new package to Tumbleweed called 'sampler' The upstream website describes the project and shows examples of what it can do in some detail: https://sampler.dev/ To put it simply, it's a command-line tool written in go for creating nice simple CLI monitoring/visualization/alert dashboards. I intend to use it for an openSUSE MicroOS Raspberry Pi which will be sitting on my desk monitoring the other core nodes in my infrastructure, but I can see it being quite fun for other use cases too. Tumbleweed - Review of the week 2020/49

Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers, Week 49 felt like a normal week, with no disasters happening, steady rolling distribution, openQA being on our side, blocking one snapshot that could have caused quite some pain to you, the users. So all in all, exactly what we want from a stable, rolling distribution. And this still resulted in 5 snapshots released during this week (1127, 1129, 1130, 1201, 1202). The main changes in those five snapshots included: * Mozilla Firefox 83.0 * Grep 3.6: the GREP_OPTIONS environment variable no longer affects grep’s behavior * GNOME 3.38.2 * Linux kernel 5.9.11 In the staging projects, these changes are being tested and worked on: * KDE Plasma 5.20.4 * KDE Applications 20.12 (currently RC being tested) * icu 68.1: breaks a couple of builds (Staging:I) * brp-check-suse: a bug fix in how it detected dangling symlinks (it detected them, but did not fail as it was supposed to) * permissions package: prepares for easier listing, while supporting a full /usr merge * RPM 4.16: still a few packages build failures (postgresql, Mozilla *, openblas) * Ruby 3.0: mainly YaST not ready for that switch * First experiments with rpmlint 2.0 started in Staging:M * openssl 3.0: currently alpha 9 in Staging:O Cheers, Dominique

[opensuse-factory] UsrMerge preparations

Hi, Quite some packages carry around sections like this: #UsrMerge mkdir $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/sbin ln -s %_sbindir/foo $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/sbin/foo #EndUsrMerge That was added years ago as preparation of replacing /bin, /sbin, /lib and /lib64 with a symlink and merging the content into their counterparts in /usr. I'm not sure how that was supposed to work in practice though. To actually get rid of resp disable that code even for testing one would have to modify a hundred packages. So I'd like to replace those comments with a conditional, ie %if !0%{?usrmerged} mkdir %buildroot/sbin ln -s %_sbindir/foo %buildroot/sbin/foo %endif That doesn't yet answer the question when and how we finally do the /usr merge. However at least it would be possible to flip a switch via prjconf to stop building compat symlinks in a branch project then. Factory as of today would keep building the packages the way they are now, so no change in content at this point. Using the macro also paves the way to actually test a usr merged environment in staging in the future.
