I am cleaning up my home project on OBS, removing things that are now
in a mainstream package or otherwise not needed. One thing I use OBS
for is making Windows versions of various packages. Part of my cleanup
is to remove any things that I have that are now duplicates. When all
is cleaned up, I hope to suggest that some packages move to the
official projects.
In doing this, I want to try to maintain compatible names wherever
possible. This is not always obvious. Mainly because the naming
convention in OBS is sometimes less than obvious. Let me use an
example: proj - which does geographic projections. There is no Windows
version (except in my project). I want to name the project as close to
the Linux name so that it is obvious that it is the same package
proj exists in two places (at least):
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/Application%3AGeo/proj where
it is called libproj12 (from source proj4.9.3)
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/openSUSE%3ALeap%3A42.3/proj
where is is called libproj9 (from source proj4.9.2)
The use of 9 or 12 in the name has nothing at all to do with the proj
source. It is, I think, a rather arbitrary number assigned to the name
by the packager in OBS. There is no property in proj to which it
refers.
proj is not the only package that does this.
Why is this done? So many other packages have different versions
available, and they do not resort to adding a strange number to the
name to differentiate them.
And what is even more obtuse is that the libraries are named with
these numbers that have nothing at all to do with the package:
/usr/lib64//libproj.so -> libproj.so.12.0.0
/usr/lib64//libproj.so.12 -> libproj.so.12.0.0
/usr/lib64//libproj.so.12.0.0
If one wanted to have a library for each proj release, why wouldn't
they be called libproj.so.4.9.3? That is, after all, where this
version of the library came from.
And, if one wants to do as I am doing - making a package that is a
port to Windows - how should the items be named? Should I just select
another apparently random number? I suspect not. But perpetuating the
oddness of assigning a unrelated number to the package name seems just
as incorrect.
I only used proj as an example. This is done all over OBS. I have read
the docs on naming, and I do not feel that this aspect is described.
At least not so I recognized it.

Hello All:
I've recently got a new laptop, the make and model is HP SPECTRE X360 15-BL112DX. I am using tumbleweed and it is up to date (since this laptop happens to have a fairly new inel wireless lan, it shows up as an 8165/8275, and the leap kernel was too old to drive it). However, bluetooth is not going well, at boot time it works for a while and then cuts out and then it won't even show up in the hardware probe from yast. What information would help track this down?
lsmod | grep -y bluetooth
bluetooth 589824 16 btrtl,hci_uart,btintel,btqca,bnep,btbcm,rfcomm,btusb
ecdh_generic 24576 1 bluetooth
rfkill 28672 10 bluetooth,hp_wmi,cfg80211

Hello,
I am running Leap 42.3. It is stated that H.264 is disabled in ffmpeg in
opensuse due to legal reasons:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Firefox_MP4/H.264_Video_Support
However, some hardware (for instance Intel Quick Sync Video) have
ability to hardware h264 decoding. And this currently works for me out
of the box via gstreamer-vaapi. So, I think hardware h264 decoding is
allowed in opensuse.
At the same time, I've failed to achive this for ffmpeg. I am tring to
follow this guide: https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Hardware/VAAPI
But every time I see the following: "This build of ffmpeg does not
include a "h264" decoder needed for input stream #0:0."
Well, is it possible to force ffmpeg use vaapi by default to decode h264
in hardware?

==== sqlite3 ====
Version update (3.20.1 -> 3.21.0)
Subpackages: libsqlite3-0 libsqlite3-0-32bit sqlite3-devel sqlite3-doc
- Update to version 3.21.0
* Take advantage of the atomic-write capabilities in the F2FS
filesystem when available, for greatly reduced transaction
overhead. This currently requires the
SQLITE_ENABLE_BATCH_ATOMIC_WRITE compile-time option.
* Allow ATTACH and DETACH commands to work inside of a
transaction.
* Allow WITHOUT ROWID virtual tables to be writable if the
PRIMARY KEY contains exactly one column.
* The "fsync()" that occurs after the header is written in a
WAL reset now uses the sync settings for checkpoints.
This means it will use a "fullfsync" on macs if PRAGMA
checkpoint_fullfsync set on.
* The sqlite3_sourceid() function tries to detect if the source
code has been modified from what is checked into version
control and if there are modifications, the last four
characters of the version hash are shown as "alt1" or
"alt2". The objective is to detect accidental and/or
careless edits. A forger can subvert this feature.
* Improved de-quoting of column names for CREATE TABLE AS
statements with an aggregate query on the right-hand side.
* Fewer "stat()" system calls issued by the unix VFS.
* Enhanced the LIKE optimization so that it works with an
ESCAPE clause.
* Enhanced PRAGMA integrity_check and PRAGMA quick_check
to detect obscure row corruption that they were formerly
missing. Also update both pragmas so that they return
error text rather than SQLITE_CORRUPT when encountering
corruption in records.
* The query planner now prefers to implement FROM-clause
subqueries using co-routines rather using the query
flattener optimization. Support for the use of
co-routines for subqueries may no longer be disabled.
* Pass information about !=, IS, IS NOT, NOT NULL, and
IS NULL constraints into the xBestIndex method of virtual tables.
* Enhanced the CSV virtual table so that it accepts the
last row of input if the final new-line character is missing.
* Remove the rarely-used "scratch" memory allocator.
Replace it with the SQLITE_CONFIG_SMALL_MALLOC configuration
setting that gives SQLite a hint that large memory allocations
should be avoided when possible.
* Added the swarm virtual table to the existing union virtual
table extension.
* Added the sqlite_dbpage virtual table for providing direct
access to pages of the database file. The source code is
built into the amalgamation and is activated using the
- DSQLITE_ENABLE_DBPAGE_VTAB compile-time option.
* Add a new type of fts5vocab virtual table - "instance"
- that provides direct access to an FTS5 full-text
index at the lowest possible level.
* Miscellaneous microoptimizations reduce CPU usage by about 2.1%.
Bug fixes
* Fix a faulty assert() statement discovered by OSSFuzz.
Ticket cb91bf4290c211d
* Fix an obscure memory leak in sqlite3_result_pointer().
Ticket 7486aa54b968e9b
* Avoid a possible use-after-free error by deferring schema
resets until after the query planner has finished running.
Ticket be436a7f4587ce5
* Only use indexes-on-expressions to optimize ORDER BY or
GROUP BY if the COLLATE is correct. Ticket e20dd54ab0e4383
* Fix an assertion fault that was coming up when the expression
in an index-on-expressions is really a constant. Ticket aa98619ad08ddca
* Fix an assertion fault that could occur following PRAGMA
reverse_unordered_selects. Ticket cb91bf4290c211d
* Fix a segfault that can occur for queries that use table-valued
functions in an IN or EXISTS subquery. Ticket b899b6042f97f5
* Fix a potential integer overflow problem when compiling a particular
horrendous common table expression. This was another problem discovered
by OSSFuzz. Check-in 6ee8cb6ae5.
* Fix a potential out-of-bound read when querying a corrupt
database file, a problem detected by Natalie Silvanovich of
Google Project Zero. Check-in 04925dee41a21f.
==== sssd ====
Version update (1.15.2 -> 1.16.0)
Subpackages: libnfsidmap-sss libsss_idmap0 libsss_nss_idmap0 libsss_simpleifp0 sssd-32bit sssd-krb5-common sssd-ldap
- Update to new upstream release 1.16.0
Security fixes
* This release fixes CVE-2017-12173: Unsanitized input when searching in
local cache database. SSSD stores its cached data in an LDAP like local
database file using libldb. To lookup cached data LDAP search filters
like (objectClass=user)(name=user_name) are used. However, in
sysdb_search_user_by_upn_res(), the input was not sanitized and
allowed to manipulate the search filter for cache lookups. This would
allow a logged in user to discover the password hash of a different user.
New Features
* SSSD now supports session recording configuration through tlog. This
feature enables recording of everything specific users see or type
during their sessions on a text terminal. For more information, see
the sssd-session-recording(5) manual page.
* SSSD can act as a client agent to deliver
Fleet Commander <https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/FleetCommander>
policies defined on an IPA server. Fleet Commander provides a
configuration management interface that is controlled centrally and
that covers desktop, applications and network configuration.
* Several new systemtap <https://sourceware.org/systemtap/> probes
were added into various locations in SSSD code to assist in
troubleshooting and analyzing performance related issues. Please see the
sssd-systemtap(5) manual page for more information.
* A new LDAP provide access control mechanism that allows to restrict
access based on PAM's rhost data field was added. For more details,
please consult the sssd-ldap(5) manual page, in particular the
options ldap_user_authorized_rhost and the rhost value of
ldap_access_filter.
- Update to new upstream release 1.15.3 (KCM disabled)
New Features
* In a setup where an IPA domain trusts an Active Directory domain,
it is now possible to define the domain resolution order
(see http://www.freeipa.org/page/Releases/4.5.0#AD_User_Short_Names)
* Design page - Shortnames in trusted domains <https://docs.pagure.org/SSSD.sssd/design_pages/shortnames.html>
* SSSD ships with a new service called KCM. This service acts as a
storage for Kerberos tickets when "libkrb5" is configured to use
"KCM:" in "krb5.conf".
* Design page - KCM server for SSSD <https://docs.pagure.org/SSSD.sssd/design_pages/kcm.html>
* NOTE: There are several known issues in the "KCM" responder that
will be handled in the next release.
* Support for user and group resolution through the D-Bus interface and
authentication and/or authorization through the PAM interface even
for setups without UIDs or Windows SIDs present on the LDAP directory
side. This enhancement allows SSSD to be used together with apache
modules <https://github.com/adelton/mod_lookup_identity> to provide
identities for applications
* Design page - Support for non-POSIX users and groups <https://docs.pagure.org/SSSD.sssd/design_pages/non_posix_support.html>
* SSSD ships a new public library called "libsss_certmap" that allows
a flexible and configurable way of mapping a certificate to a user
identity.
* Design page - Matching and Mapping Certificates <https://docs.pagure.org/SSSD.sssd/design_pages/matching_and_mapping_certifi…>
* The Kerberos locator plugin can be disabled using an environment variable
"SSSD_KRB5_LOCATOR_DISABLE". Please refer to the
"sssd_krb5_locator_plugin" manual page for mode details.
* The "sssctl" command line tool supports a new command "user-checks"
that enables the administrator to check whether a certain user should be
allowed or denied access to a certain PAM service.
* The "secrets" responder now forwards requests to a proxy Custodia
back end over a secure channel.

- Cleanup SLE12 boot image descriptions
- Bump version: 9.11.12 ? 9.11.13
- Cleanup SLE boot image descriptions
Don't use packages which does not exist on SLE, Fixes #523
- Improve coding style to make flake8 happy
This commit includes the exact Exception class that the 'except' statement
catches. According to the new flake8 3.5.0 version it should be explicit
rather than implicit.
- Add OCI reference in skopeo copy call and umoci config call
Skopeo, since v1.24, does no longer assume 'latest' as the default
tag/reference and requires explicit tag or reference in skopeo
call. In KIWI the default was only used to import the base rootfs,
with this commit the imported container is tagged as 'base_layer'.
The current patch works for all skopeo versions.
- Update hooks documentation
- Bump version: 9.11.11 ? 9.11.12
- Add more hooks for oemboot
This follows netboot behavior
- Fix vmdk descriptor file
This commit fixes the descriptor file of the vmdk images. Before this
commit the descriptior file was appended at the end of the image
instead of overwritting the current one at the very beginning.
Fixes bsc#1050665
- Bump version: 9.11.10 ? 9.11.11
- Follow up fix for isohybrid error handling
Allow to handle multiple messages from isohybrid as warnings.
Only if the list of messages still contains information after all
non error conditions had been checked out, an exception is
thrown
- Bump version: 9.11.9 ? 9.11.10
- Cleanup boot descriptions
The still existing kiwi boot descriptions contained wrong
information about no longer existing packages and many
other obsolete information.
- Bump version: 9.11.8 ? 9.11.9

Hi all,
Currently, rpm stores its rpmdb (the record of all a systems packages)
in /var/lib/rpm
Various openSUSE & SUSE distributions have a number of problems with this
This has a major impact on our default btrfs snapshot & rollback feature.
We need the contents of the rpmdb contained within the snapshots.
This means /var/lib/rpm must be contained in the root snapshot in
order to preserve the "system-state";
Without it a rolled-back system still thinks it has packages
installed/removed which were changed as a result of the rollback.
But /var and /var/lib both contain a great deal of data which we DO
NOT want to include in the root snapshot;
For example, we most certainly don't want snapper rolling back a
database in /var/lib/mysql for example, and destroying user data in
the process.
Therefore we currently carry a rather complicated default list of subvolumes:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:BTRFS#Default_Subvolumes
This list contains a number of specific directories in /var/* we wish
to preserve, which means it's almost continually out of date, leading
to user data being at risk if we haven't made a specific subvolume for
that data.
The rpmdb is the only "system-state" information we have in /var which
we need to preserve, making it quite a disruptive presence in the /var
filesystem hierarchy.
The problem is further complicated in *SUSE distributions that use a
Read-Only root filesystem (eg. openSUSE Kubic & SUSE CaaS Platform)
because it results in a situation where we really need to micromanage
countless subvolumes under /var - any location we miss otherwise ends
up read-only and packages can't write to the files they expect to be
able to in /var
Red Hat had a similar problem with their rpm-ostree tooling, which
they solved by relocating the RPM database to /usr/share/rpm
https://rpm-ostree.readthedocs.io/en/latest/#why-not-implement-these-change…
I would like to propose we adopt the same location for rpmdb in all
*SUSE distributions
This would mean we could make a single /var subvolume and dramatically
simplify our btrfs configuration
For systems with a read-only rootfs, /usr/share/rpm would be immutable
and pristine, just as we require it to be. Our tooling should already
be able to handle the new location without any major issues.
For systems with a read-write rootfs, we will be slightly bending the
rules of the FHS, in the sense that the FHS claims /usr should be
'read-only data'
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#THEUSRHIERARCHY
However, installing packages routinely modifies the contents of /usr
and it's various subdirectories, that is the nature of installing
packages.
Therefore it seems logical to me that the record of what is installed
is also stored under the same conditions.
I'm working on a patchset in an OBS home project to test this proposal
and shake loose any issues, and will also be proposing this location
change to rpm upstream.
Therefore any comments are not only welcome, but the quicker the
better, so I can factor them into what I'm doing.
I would also like suggestions as how best to handle the migration of
an existing rpmdb in /var/lib/rpm to it's new location in
/usr/share/rpm, as I'm certain this is something we want to get
absolutely perfect, and I'm understandably nervous about changing the
rpmdb's location during an rpm transaction which will be altering the
rpmdb.
Thanks in advance,

As already reported on the opensuse mailing list
(https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2017-10/msg00486.html) TW 20171023
brought an ibus icon in the system tray. Is this on purpose? Bug or feature?
Regards, Frank

[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed - Review of the weeks 2017/42 & 43
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 27 Oct '17
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 27 Oct '17
27 Oct '17
Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,
Tumbleweed has been on the roll for the last two weeks and, thanks to
all your efforts, a total of 7 snapshots reached the users since my
last review. The snapshots had the versions 1013, 1017, 1018, 1019,
1022, 1023 and 1025 as usual, some had more or less impact on your
daily work
The noteworthy changes are:
* Linux kernels 4.16.6, 4.13.8 and 4.13.9 (crazy, 3 kernels in 2
weeks!)
* LLVM4 has been reworked into a single libLLVM library
* LibreOffice 5.4.2
* Display Manager is no longer chosen via
/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager: YaST is simplifying and default things
like DMs are easier picked on a prioritization list based on installed
packages. Since the ‘Desktop selection’ had been reworked majorly, YaST
had a hard time guessing what the right value might be.
* KDE Applications 17.08.2
* KDE Plasma 5.11.1 (completion)
* Qt 5.9.2
* Samba 4.7.0
And as if that was not enough, there is, as usual things piled up and
‘almost ready to be shipped’:
* Linux Kernel 4.13.10
* KDE Plasma 5.11.2
* KDE Frameworks 5.39.0
* openSSL 1.1 as openSUSE’s default
* PostgreSQL 10
As a reminder, if you want to get started with contributing to
openSUSE, an easy entry point, besides reporting bugs, is submitting
(often) simple build fixes for packages that no longer fail in
openSUSE:Factory. An up-to-date list of current build issues can be
found at https://goo.gl/7gtBRy
Another thing you can keep an eye on is the InstallCheck report,
published at https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/openSUSE:Fact
ory:Staging/dashboard/installcheck – packages that are not installable
need some work (often it’s due to some build fails, sometimes just
missing/changed dependencies)
Cheers,
Dominique
