[opensuse-factory] acpid requires systemd?

Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. I created a merge request for desktop-data three weeks ago. It's just a minor patch that doesn't really fix anything but a warning from kbuildsycoca4. I'm not sure about how Gitorious works, maintainers are supposed to notice the "1" in the merge requests section or they receive an email notifying it? And since I'm on it. Since I updated my 11.3 system to KDE to 4.5 the "inline" part of the menu is not honored... Expected behavior? [opensuse-factory] OpenTTD: An open source clone of Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe

Dear openSUSE Factory Team OpenTTD is now for some years completely independent from the original TTD with its own graphics, sound and music. Therefore I would like to submit the package to openSUSE Factory. The brief description from http://www.openttd.org/en/about reads: OpenTTD is an open source simulation game based upon the popular Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features. Together with the package openttd, there are two data packages and one building tool: - openttd with subpackages openttd-dedicated (no SDL dependency) and openttd-data (noarch) - openttd-opengfx (required graphics) - openttd-openmsx (optional midi music) - nml (building tool for opengfx) (all 4 packages use license GPL-2.0) There is a third data package openttd-opensfx, but this does not fulfill the license requirements and so can't go to Factory (Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0, which means basically no commercial use). This is no big deal, like music sound is just optional and you can easily be downloaded ingame via the content service. Players get notified if they start openttd the first time. Some upstream developers of these dependent packages are also member of the OpenTTD dev team. This ensures that dependencies always work together. Also upstream has a very professional release workflow, which makes it easily maintainable for distro packager. There is a yearly major release on April 1st (no fool) and around 4 to 5 minor security/bugfix releases (http://security.openttd.org). Also there are security patches for older major release branches to support LTS distros, which do not update main releases during same distro. Usually it is very recommend to use the same versions as upstream to keep compatible with Network Multiplayer Games. But as openSUSE has a very short lifetime, this should be no issue. Development project is games. openttd is part of included there for ages. In order to ensure openttd and its support packages build on Factory, I created a temporary project: home:openttdcoop:Factory There you can find the 4 packages I submit to Factory. I heavily reworked the packages to make it "Factory capable" and didn't yet submit those changes to games. (review welcome) Currently, I don't submit testing releases (beta or RC) to games and keep those in home:openttdcoop. If openttd will be accepted in Factory, this might change. My next steps are now waiting for some comments here (around a week). If there won't be any arguments against submitting, I will submit openttd, openttd-opengfx, openttd-openmsx and nml from games to Factory. Heya all, You might know that Mighty Google spends millions each year sponsoring IT students to work 3 months full time on cool Free Software projects? You should try and get some of that $$ to be poured into a project you love! If you'd like an IT student to work on something for 12 weeks, add the project idea to http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC_2012_Ideas and be sure to add your name as potential mentor. GSOC myths and reality check: *MYTH*: The students don't work very hard *REALITY*: You have every right to expect them to put in effort: it is a FULL- TIME gig, 3 months, quite well paid. So if THEY don't put in work, neither should you - and let them fail. But most students are quite eager and work hard. *MYTH*: The students know nothing *REALITY*: While some students are real beginners, decent student selection should prevent this. You have a say in this - and you'll have plenty of interactions with potential students before they are chosen as they have to work with you on a good proposal. *MYTH*: The students do it just for the monies *REALITY*: Not more or less than you work for yours. GSOC is meant to replace a summer job, so yes, the students get paid. That also means they have to work for it - 40 hours a week is expected at least. And I'd expect more even... *MYTH*: Mentoring is so much work, it is easier to do the stuff yourself *REALITY*: The students get selected on the quality of the proposals they wrote together with the mentors and are expected to work 40 hours a week. You're expected to mentor: check up at least once a week (make them write a weekly blog about their progress! You're the boss, remember) and answer some questions. Not do their work for them. The oS GSOC team will help you in case you get in trouble - but really, if the student does less work than you put in, he either took on something insanely complicated (bad selection!) or you're being far too nice. It will take some hours, but most of that is easy - a quick IRC chat, pointing to some documentation, reading a weekly report, reviewing a merge request (but that's something you'd do anyway, right?). [opensuse-factory] Going underground, my packages are still maintained

Hi all, For quite sometime I've been erasing information about me in several resources, the request to terminate my membership has been heard and I'm no longer a member (a nice protest form against the anti-democratic ego driven concepts of a few). Pascal also kindly removed my blog feeds from the planet by my request. I've un-subscribed all mailing lists except: - opensuse-factory; - opensuse-gnome; All my packages/OBS repos are still going to be maintained, but a huge cleanup is going to happen soon (during the weekend). On the other hand, during the last weeks I've been aqquiring a lot of know-how on Fedora packaging and about Koji, which I now know very well. This to say that soon there will be an increase on contributions from me on Fedora side, mainly for EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux), I do have no intention on maintaining Fedora packages besides EPEL. I will also keep some time for giving some love to GNOME:Cinnamon and will later pick up my work on GNOME:Ayatana. So in other words, my demise in openSUSE is 99% complete and people won't have to read/ignore more stupid emails from me, no more nagging, no more nothing. Hopefully I'll see better days in the future... [opensuse-factory] new rpmlint check for insecure logrotate configs

Hi, Logrotate 3.8 introduced stricter demands on the ownership of log directories. It refuses to rotate log files in directories that are writable by anyone other than root to avoid e.g. symlink tricks of a compromised account. The correct fix is to change the ownership of log _directories_ to root and also don't allow any group != 0 to write there. It's still ok for log _files_ to be owned and writable by some unprivileged user or group. Bad: drwxrwxr-x 2 foo bar /var/log/foo/ -rw-rw-r-- 2 foo bar /var/log/foo/foo.log Good: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root /var/log/foo/ -rw-rw-r-- 2 foo bar /var/log/foo/foo.log Alternatively if the package in question for whatever reason requires the log directory to be writable by unprivileged users logrotate now also supports a 'su' option. So I've introduced a new rpmlint check in Factory that checks for user owned log directories resp lack of the 'su' option. rpmlint now also complains if the log directory is not packaged as it obviously can't check the permissions then. Hi all, I just found out that after updating Factory packages yesterday, my system wouldn't boot. Thankfully I have a copy of the system on my second harddisk and by rewriting the "root" line in GRUB I could boot with the initrd from a day before. The error seems to be in /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/setup-prepare.sh and the thread in http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php?p=2442622 tells the details. We should care that a bug is filed and a fix submitted, or a lot of Factory installations will become unusable. I've issued deletion requests for the cinnamon packages that were in oS:Factory and I've decided not to make it part of the upcoming 12.2. There's no big reason for this except that I feel more confortable this way and I believe that keeping it on a community repository makes it easier to maintain and to experiment. Users who want cinnamon will still be able to use it with openSUSE. Just saying updatedb causes /usr/bin/find: invalid expression; you have used a binary operator '-o' with nothing before it. Is this a known problem? Hi All, I would like to introduce OpenLP to Factory. The package is currently maintained in the devel:languages:python repository. I am one of the maintainers of OpenLP in the devel:languages:python repository. Summary: OpenLP is an open source Church presentation and lyrics projection application. Upstream URL: http://openlp.org OBS Project: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=OpenLP&project=devel%3Alang… The project is in very active development. It is technically in a beta phase, however the quality is currently very good and will improve by the time openSUSE 12.2 ships in July. The latest version, 1.9.8, is stable in openSUSE 12.1. As far as I know openSUSE currently does not have any program in the main repos that fits OpenLPs use case. All of OpenLP's dependencies exist in Factory. OpenLP is affected by a QT4/baselibs bug ( https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=748241) that exists in Factory when the presentations plugin that allows for integration with LibreOffice Impress is enabled. Should this bug not be fixed in time for the July release of 12.2 I can patch OpenLP to disable the plugin. Hi Factory users, It seems that we are getting closer and closer to a new boot experience. We have resolved the tty issue and are now running Plymouth and the Graphical session on tty7, keeping the same user experience as before plymouth. The plymouth package has been submitted to Factory in order to get the necessary legal and source review. If you would like to help us testing the package and the integration with other packages, then now is the time to do so. Instructions for installation, etc can be found on the following wiki-page: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Plymouth I also would like to thank Jeff Mahony and Christian Rodriguez for their work on the plymouth packages. [opensuse-factory] Changing runlevel in MS1 disconnects users on tty2-6

Hi all, during my tests with gdm on installed GNOME-livecd-build0151 (now solved using lightdm instead of gdm), I noted that when I change the runlevel via "telinit n", all users logged in tty2-6 are forced to disconnect by the system; only user logged in tty1 remains logged in. However this happens only when systemd is used; if I boot using system V, when I change runlevel all users logged in tty1-6 remain logged in. In my opinion runlevel change should not disconnect users logged in tty2-6. Is this a wanted behavior? or is it a (known) bug? [opensuse-factory] Problems with X on installed GNOME livecd

Hi all, I tried to install the GNOME livecd (build-0151.i686) in VirtualBox but then I am not able to have a running X. If I boot in rl 5, X/gdm crashes and tries to restart repeatedly until I force the system to go to rl3. Once in rl 3, if I launch startx as root I obtain a running X instance but if I launch startx as normal user, I obtain a fatal server error from X: Cannot move old log file "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old". /var/log/Xorg.0.log has ownership root:root with permissions 644 while /var/log has the same ownership and permissions 755. If I use the same iso image as livecd, X starts correctly under user linux. Is it a known problem? Should I file a bug report against X? [opensuse-factory] Backlight issues on Samsung netbooks

Good people, I've had a question on a Portuguese forum and a bug report on bugzilla[1] regarding a few issues with Samsung and backlight. Disabling 'Dim when idle' does fix the issue (alongside with a grub entry: acpi_backlight=vendor). I'm sure probably some people have run against this, and I've found some sources on github (Greg KH). I haven't checked the license of them, but... what would be the best way to grab a fix for this users (even if it's from an external repository)... For what I could found out, two things are needed: - samsung-backlight - samsung-tools. Anyone knows where's upstream for this so I can dig up a bit more... My google searches were somehow confusing and innefective. [opensuse-factory] Good statistics is a must have

I being a maintained of a big OBS project very much in need for a good statistics page which not only would sow the use of particular repositories, but also of the particular packages inside a repository. For example, I want to know which packages in KDE:KDE3 are extensively used and which were not used at all (so I could know which is to fix first). [opensuse-factory] Plymouth update: One step further, but graphical session runs on tty1

Hi Listmates, To give you a little heads up on the plymouth trial and errors. At this moment I managed to get a smooth transistion from plymouth to KDM/GDM. However this has a little side effect, namely that the graphical session is running on TTY1 and no longer on TTY7. GDM works out-of-the-box with this, but KDM would require a small patch. The main question however would be if it would be acceptable to have the change that the graphical session is running on TTY1. Fedora also made this change when they implemented Plymouth, but I am wondering what your opinion is. Another community member (tigerfoot) did a test and found another issue when using encrypted disks. We are trying to sort this one out before preparing an initial package which could be submitted to Factory. Hi all, As Stephan and Vincent pointed there was a small issue with 'muffin'. Muffin is a fork of mutter and currently provides the same internal typelib as mutter, which generates a 'Provides: typelib(Meta) = 3.0'. This might bring issues with Mutter since both will provide the same typelib. I've made the following changes: 1. Merged typelib into the main package; 2. Filtered the Provides so that the typelib isn't a part of the package Provides; Upstream has been notified of this issue, and since the fix involves a lot of code change, they will work on this after the 1.2.1 release. Can we live like this for a while (it will most likely be fixed upstream before the release). Coolo, Vincent, are we cool to keep on with the submissions ? This happened last night, and happened multiple times again minutes ago, attempting to use download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss as source. In manual setup (trying again) it wants IP address of the HTTP server. Why is initial (text) installation process always unable to use the hostname here (same as for many years), when supplying hostname with nameserver on cmdline normally works OK? Hi Factory contributors, It's been a while that I invested time in Compiz and the move of various desktop environments to be compositing themselves made compiz for big parts obsoleted... given, it still has nice effects but I am not even sure how well and if it currently works in Factory... And as I don't use compiz anymore myself, there is only little use in claiming maintenership on it anymore: I would only run after issues instead of pro-actively taking care of them. Compiz upstream is mainly busy adjusting it for ubuntu unity. If nobody steps up to take over compiz maintainership within a week, I will file drop requests for the various compiz packages. It's better to not ship anything nobody tests rather than ship it non-functional. Looking forward for your offers to take over!
