[opensuse-factory] Lilypond won't work with guile 2.0, What can I do to prevent it being dropped? Do we really want guile 2.0 yet?

OpenSUSE has jumped way ahead of all the other major distributions by pushing guile-2.0 to factory, this may cause problems for packages such as gnucash if it uses guile to the extent that lilypond does. Lilypond uses guile extensively and are working on porting lily to guile 2.0 but this is their timeline quoted from one of my emails from Graham Percival to the devel list please note that lilypond 2.16.0 may not be released before openSUSE 12.1 and I'm working on 2.14.2 atm the current release : There is absolutely zero chance of lilypond 2.16 using guile 2.0. There is maybe a 10% chance that any version of lilypond will support guile 2.0 in 2011. Total guesswork for future predictions: 50% chance of supporting guile 2.0 before July 2012, 80% chance of support guile 2.0 before the end of 2012. What that means for opensuse is up to you. If you particularly want guile 2.0, then by all means jump in; the more people working on it, the higher the chances are that it'll get done sooner. But based on the amount of work that currently goes into guile 2.0, those are my estimates. Cheers, - Graham and I think this is also relevant, another lily developers reply from the same message: Given that the upcoming ubuntu oneiric apparently does not include guile 2.0, I also don't see a switch to guile 2.0 in the near future. I suppose that we should ask the ubuntu people when they'll finally package guile 2.0. Cheers, Reinhold I've looked at parallel installation of guile 1.8.8 (we jumped from 1.8.7 to 2.0.1) and it doesn't look easy otherwise I would have submitted guile1 but I'm still working on it although I'm not that familiar with the autoconf/automake build system at this level. What this means for openSUSE, lilypond is a very popular musical notation type setting program, the developers pride themselves in the accuracy of the notation positions, it is also used, for musical notation by rosegarden, a popular music and midi composition program. Both of these applications have no substitutes in the open source world and only have costly equivalents in the ms windows world, neither being available for ms windows although there are requests to port for both this won't happen in the immediate future. Rosegarden can work without lilypond as it is only bound to lilyponds notation fonts but the sheet music it exports will be useless so it will lose major functionality. Lilypond won't even be able to be installed via tarball on openSUSE 12.1 without the user removing guile 2.0 completely and installing guile 1.8 via tarball, as a result these users of lilypond and rosegarden will drop openSUSE. I started as a community maintainer by saving both lilypond and rosegarden from being dropped, I'm now very active in maintaining multimedia apps and libs and losing these programs will mean losing a large section of professionals in music related professions that have migrated from the windows world including the people that I've converted from ms windows just by showing them rosegarden although ms's change from xp to vista also helped. For the other packages that directly depend on guile : guile aisleriot gnucash autogen and slib, the change back to guile-1.8.8 won't AFAICS have any negative effects, all of these packages simply have patches for guile 2.0 and after looking at the patches, will most probably build with the patches still in place. I don't know what the situation is with guile users but it is an app for use by apps and not a direct users app. Guile-1.8.7 builds for factory, guile-1.8.7 doesn't build for 11.4. What are we going to do? Drop lilypond, I will keep it alive in home:plater:lilypond with guile-1.8.8 to replace guile-2.0.2 or revert to guile-1.8.8 in line with the other linux distributions? All, I just submitted 4 computer forensic packages to factory today. The most noteworthy is log2timeline. log2timeline won the 2009 Gold Award from SANS and is one of the hottest computer forensic apps out there from the perspective of the incident response community. == Overview of computer forensic submissions to factory Since 12.1 I've submitted a few different computer forensic apps: In Factory - mac-robber - a app to output Modified, Accessed, Created dates In Factory - sleuthkit - a well known collection of computer forensic command line tools upgraded in Factory - exiftool - a tool to extract and update metadata in user files / photo files. Submitted - afflib - Library/Tool to create "open" forensic images Submitted - bulk_extractor - Tool to scan forensic images and pull out patterns like urls Submitted - fiwalk - Tool to catalog files within a forensic image Submitted - log2timeline - App to create integrated timelines from multiple sources Submitted - python-fuse - python bindings for fuse In Security - libewf - Library/Tool to create EnCase forensic images - waiting for python-fuse to be accepted In Archiving:Backup - dc3dd - Tool for creating "dd" forensic images - I want to move it to the security project before I submit it Considering packaging - autopsy - a WebUI for sleuthkit. A new 3.0 beta is out, but it's windows only for now. I'm on hold until a linux version fo 3.0 is ready to test. If anyone else is interested in computer forensic apps, please ask to be a co-maintainer on the above, or submit additional packages. I hope to continue to submit one or two packages a month to factory. If anyone wants to help, but doesn't know how to package, then creating a Computer Forensics portal page would be a great asset as well. Which is the upstream repo.. not Factory.... so... bleh... it's so unclear which one to use where. I usually use Factory (esp for KDE)... I'm happy to use Upstream too :-) I'll give it a whirl here. But... there are a few misleading bits on the KDE repo page. The one I linked should be Factory 4.8 builds for Factory, 11.4 and 12.1... I've checked and Factory are the only ones that have been updated. So... are "we" updating the Factory repos there for 11.4 and 12.1? (when?) or are they staying as they are? [opensuse-factory] factory mixing kde 4.7.4 & 4.8.0

factory appears to contain a mix of kde-4.7.4 and kde-4.8.0 and zypper wants to upgrade only *part* of kde. Will this not cause mis-match problems with kdelib* files? Just pulled it in from there... and also had to kill the branding (no big deal) But... ugggh... Nepomuk/Strigi is back with a vengeance :-( After installing and logging out/in it pegged both cores for about 10 minutes. During this time, it can take a minute or longer for a click in the System Settings window to register. Clicking the Desktop Search icon... at any point means a loooooooong wait before getting any control back on the settings window. Evnetually it quit doing whatever it was doing (10 or 15 minutes) and the CPU load dropped to normal. [opensuse-factory] KDe4.8 in oS12.1?

So I've been wanting to update to KDE4.8 in 12.1 for a while now... according to: http://en.opensuse.org/KDE_repositories#Factory_aka._KDF_.28KDE_SC_4.8.29 I should in theory be able to add: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_12.… correct? But this repo only has 4.7.4. If I add the Factory repos (from that same section) I get errors about "opensuse libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.15)" which I traced to this bug report: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=740584 So... will the 4.8 build eventually be replicated into the 12.1 repo, or... is it better to pull the full Factory repo for this? If the Factory repo, what needs to be included to fulfill the libc version problem? Dear all, I've spoken with Jigish Gohil[1] and we're clear to move in with Cinnamon. He's busy during this days, so I'm taking the lead with Cinnamon. A few things people will need to know about Cinnamon: * Cinnamon is a replacement for gnome-shell and requires GNOME3 to be installed; * Cinnamon will be introduced for openSUSE 12.1 and onwards, I won't deploy on previous platforms (if anyone wants to jump in for it, all help is appreciated); * Cinnamon currently is composed of 5 packages, more will be added in the future (most likely cosmetic packages); - muffin - cinnamon's window manager - cinnamon - cinnamon desktop shell - cinnamon-extensions - extension bundle for cinnamon - cinnamon-extension-weather - weather applet extension - cinnamon-settings - GUI configuration tool for cinnamon * Cinnamon requires no hacks (only one patch was applied to correct a path in a session file for GDM); * Development Project is: GNOME:Cinnamon (thanks to Vincent and GNOME Team people); * All the dependencies are already in openSUSE:Factory provided by GNOME Project.
