Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. [opensuse-factory] KDE menus and gitorious

I created a merge request for desktop-data three weeks ago. It's just a minor patch that doesn't really fix anything but a warning from kbuildsycoca4. I'm not sure about how Gitorious works, maintainers are supposed to notice the "1" in the merge requests section or they receive an email notifying it? And since I'm on it. Since I updated my 11.3 system to KDE to 4.5 the "inline" part of the menu is not honored... Expected behavior? [opensuse-factory] Lilypond won't work with guile 2.0, What can I do to prevent it being dropped? Do we really want guile 2.0 yet?

OpenSUSE has jumped way ahead of all the other major distributions by pushing guile-2.0 to factory, this may cause problems for packages such as gnucash if it uses guile to the extent that lilypond does. Lilypond uses guile extensively and are working on porting lily to guile 2.0 but this is their timeline quoted from one of my emails from Graham Percival to the devel list please note that lilypond 2.16.0 may not be released before openSUSE 12.1 and I'm working on 2.14.2 atm the current release : There is absolutely zero chance of lilypond 2.16 using guile 2.0. There is maybe a 10% chance that any version of lilypond will support guile 2.0 in 2011. Total guesswork for future predictions: 50% chance of supporting guile 2.0 before July 2012, 80% chance of support guile 2.0 before the end of 2012. What that means for opensuse is up to you. If you particularly want guile 2.0, then by all means jump in; the more people working on it, the higher the chances are that it'll get done sooner. But based on the amount of work that currently goes into guile 2.0, those are my estimates. Cheers, - Graham and I think this is also relevant, another lily developers reply from the same message: Given that the upcoming ubuntu oneiric apparently does not include guile 2.0, I also don't see a switch to guile 2.0 in the near future. I suppose that we should ask the ubuntu people when they'll finally package guile 2.0. Cheers, Reinhold I've looked at parallel installation of guile 1.8.8 (we jumped from 1.8.7 to 2.0.1) and it doesn't look easy otherwise I would have submitted guile1 but I'm still working on it although I'm not that familiar with the autoconf/automake build system at this level. What this means for openSUSE, lilypond is a very popular musical notation type setting program, the developers pride themselves in the accuracy of the notation positions, it is also used, for musical notation by rosegarden, a popular music and midi composition program. Both of these applications have no substitutes in the open source world and only have costly equivalents in the ms windows world, neither being available for ms windows although there are requests to port for both this won't happen in the immediate future. Rosegarden can work without lilypond as it is only bound to lilyponds notation fonts but the sheet music it exports will be useless so it will lose major functionality. Lilypond won't even be able to be installed via tarball on openSUSE 12.1 without the user removing guile 2.0 completely and installing guile 1.8 via tarball, as a result these users of lilypond and rosegarden will drop openSUSE. I started as a community maintainer by saving both lilypond and rosegarden from being dropped, I'm now very active in maintaining multimedia apps and libs and losing these programs will mean losing a large section of professionals in music related professions that have migrated from the windows world including the people that I've converted from ms windows just by showing them rosegarden although ms's change from xp to vista also helped. For the other packages that directly depend on guile : guile aisleriot gnucash autogen and slib, the change back to guile-1.8.8 won't AFAICS have any negative effects, all of these packages simply have patches for guile 2.0 and after looking at the patches, will most probably build with the patches still in place. I don't know what the situation is with guile users but it is an app for use by apps and not a direct users app. Guile-1.8.7 builds for factory, guile-1.8.7 doesn't build for 11.4. What are we going to do? Drop lilypond, I will keep it alive in home:plater:lilypond with guile-1.8.8 to replace guile-2.0.2 or revert to guile-1.8.8 in line with the other linux distributions? If i start emacs (or pidgin) i get the following error: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_datalist_get_data Am i missing some library? Is this a packaging error? Hi, There are some things we need to get done before we can call Milestone 6 Beta: - kpat is 4.7.0 - 11.4 artwork needs to go. Unless of course the artwork says this will stay for the final. - systemd still has several issues on the live cd and first boot after installation - there are still 22 build failures in openSUSE:Factory:Staging:DtNeeded, we'll revert the patch in binutils I guess. - we have no kernel-xen - several kmps do not build: ndiswrapper, omnibook, vmpware-guest, xen, xtables-addons This is just what came to my mind, I bet there is more if you start looking into bugzilla. [opensuse-factory] Update frequency of the openSUSE:Factory snapshot repo

In the past the snapshot repo was created (AFAIK) to reduce the number of rebuilds triggered by changes in the Factory/standard repo. However this is no longer the case. The snapshot repo seems to be updated as soon as that the Factory/standard repo is being published and this causes an big number of rebuilds. Of course this is the way that things should work, but I wonder if it is really necessary to have the snapshot repo updated at least once a day (if not twice a day). This is causing that repo's that are building against it to be triggered for a full rebuild again and bigger repo's will just keep on building and building, without ever really coming to the point to be published. My question now is if we can lower the frequency of updating the snapshot repo (and give somewhat more peace to OBS) or is there a way to setup a repository to ignore those snapshot updates ? Hi, opensuse 11.4 is getting to be a few cmake versions behind (2.8.3) and my workarounds are growing for modules that have fixes upstream. How about updating what's in, at least, tumbleweed? I'd be glad if it got put into 11.4 updates but tumbleweed is a great start. I found a build laying around in the tools:building repository but yet another repository is undesirable, especially since I maintain alot of build machines at my workplace. Thoughts? [opensuse-factory] openSUSE Factory on ARM is alive!

Hi, This week, a group of Hack week participants have sat together and bootstrapped openSUSE Factory for ARM, namely for armv5tel (soft floating point with thumbs) and for armv7hl (hard floating point with aapcs-linux ABI). This seems to be the common cross-distro standard, the recent Fedora15 porting activities also targetted armv7hl. The status is at the moment: - We have at the moment over 1700 packages succeeded. A test on real hardware shows that the packages are running fine. Many more packages should come over the next few hours, as low-level dependencies are finally building and now will enable the build of the rest of the distro. - We have one hard issue: gcc 4.6 seems to miscompile on armv5tel something that causes the rpm database to corrupt very quickly, which means that no packages can build in a regular chroot, which sets up the rpm database but corrupts it, so the rpmbuild then fails. As a workaround, we're building armv5tel with gcc 4.4, which works fine. Thiis is not a permanent solution yet, we need to find the actual problem. - We have a few failures in packages. Looking at them, most of them are caused by threading issues (e.g. failing testsuites), because building under usermode qemu does not have a good thread emulation, and it often fails or simply crashes. This seems to be a hard issue, we can only solve that by building either in system qemu (which seems to be too slow to use) or by building with real hardware. We currently plan to use real hardware. At the moment, problematic parts can be disabled with a %if !%qemu_user_space_build ... %endif section. Everyone is invited to take a look at the failures and help fixing them. building packages locally is easy, if you have "qemu" installed. we recommend to use the qemu from openSUSE:Tools:Unstable, as it has a couple of fixes we noticed that we need for proper building. [opensuse-factory] Growing some openSUSE ARMs

Sorry for the cross posting, but I thought it worth the extra noise ;-) One of the things that came out of the recent Geeko Love-In for me was a new project to immerse myself in within openSUSE. Yeah I know, we have enough existing projects already so why create a new one? Simples! Believe it or not but openSUSE is behind the curve in a specific segment, and that segment has yet to explode to its full potential. That segment is ARM. No I'm not talking about your upper body appendages, but the architecture that powers most of your little devices (and some bigger ones too). Almost all smartphones, tablets and many other consumer devices are powered by ARM from one of the numerous licensees. Didn't openSUSE do something about this a while ago? Yes we did. Unfortunately the effort seems to have bitrotted somewhat, there were numerous reasons and I don't even prophesise to know the all either. As such I'm going to try and kickstart things, and see it through and hopefully see it grow. As I mentioned, this idea came up at the conference when I was talking to numerous people (I forget how it all started, but that doesn't really matter). There was an overwhelmingly positive view on the matter, and that for me was all that counts. Now let me be crystal clear here, *THIS WILL NOT BE A ONE MAN SHOW!!* I mentioned previously that my view is that we as a community are pretty lazy at times with getting our hands dirty. As such if you think things are going slow or not going in the direction you would like, don't moan. Get your hands dirty and help make a difference. The process will not be an easy one either, so don't expect a port to magically appear over night. If we're lucky we might be able to have a working port in 6 months. Maybe longer, maybe shorter; ultimately that lies with us as a community. Stage one has begun already thanks to Adrian Schroeter, Alex Graf and Dirk Mueller. Stage one comprises of getting the boot strap process to work. At a cursory level this means getting the packages required for setting up a build chroot environment and for building these packages on the target ARM architecture. This will possibly take a fair amount of time, and no I won't give any timelines for this - how long is a piece of string? openSUSE has a couple of advantages here, 1) we have the OBS which can cross build and if need be cross compile packages for numerous architectures (ARM included) so we are going to make a start with that; 2) SUSE are going to be doing another HackWeek (I think it is next week) which means Adrian, Alex, Dirk and anyone else that has knowledge, experience or interest can join in the fun and pain almost full time for a week - let's not kid ourselves here there is a high probability for lots of pain, but also fun ;-) Thing is HackWeek is not just for SUSE staff, it is also for the community. You can join in and spend some quality time on the project with those that know a whole heap of stuff, and learn from them and maybe even teach them something too. We are going to be targeting ARMv7 nothing older I'm afraid this means CORTEX-A8 and above (looking at A9 primarily and then the new A15 when it's available), it gets too messy otherwise and it is already messy enough.If you have knowledge and experience, please help out. If you don't take part you have no justification to complain - you've got to be in it to win it ;-) So I'm basically just giving you all a heads up on this effort, and will update you as regularly as possible (I'm hoping to do something weekly maybe). In the meantime, if you're interested join #opensuse-arm on Freenode and the opensuse-arm mailing list. *DO NOT HARRASS* for updates, if there is something to say it will be said. If you've got a question, ask and *WAIT* for an answer. If you want to help out but want to know how ask and *WAIT* for an answer. The new branding is in the factory and looks cool... great work! Now the things I found up to now 1. kdm login screen and kspashx on my desktop 1920x1080 seem to use different resolution backgrounds. the geeko changes slightly the position from kdm to ksplash. this may be tough to fix, iirc ksplash is picky about what resolutions it takes... kdm is not. 2. the susegreeter still has the old branding... and it seems the new branding was not commited in git. 3. the sysinfo uses the old branding. this is the offending file... /usr/share/kde4/apps/sysinfo/about/images/background.png I did not manage to see where is taken from ye. Moreover... when in full-screen the background does not expand all over the window width. see picture. http://paste.opensuse.org/23951090 4. for factory versions... should we use for kde kickoff as start the factory geeko instead of the green one? moving to the green one once in rc or gm state? Any future 4.1 releases will have a modified version notifier on non-Oracle builds which advise the user that if their distribution/distributor no longer provides current versions of the Additions they should remove the distribution version and install ours. Distributors should feel free to customise the message. And we have also fixed the only problem we could find which would cause problems when 4.1 Additions were used with a 4.0 host - the Guest Execution functionality was not working in this case. The 3D ABI is compatible between 4.0 and 4.1, and we will try our best not to keep it compatible in future. So as of any future 4.1 or later releases it will be safe for distributions to supply the most recent version of the Additions for use with any host version as of 4.0. (Just in case there is any doubt, we will only be testing this for Linux guests, although chances are good that it will apply for other guests too.) When to announce publically I leave to the marketing guys, I'll be mainly off the internet till tuesday as monday is public holiday for me and I'm told publishing news on friday is bad - but I'll make sure the ISOs are available for interested testers. I hope that's ok for the team. Now the interesting question is what about the RC1. We didn't really loose time in development as we checked in almost everything that came in during the time we waited for the fixes - this includes e.g. kernel 3.1rc7. But we can't hold the schedule as it is - the original deadline for RC1 checkins is october 7th - that's around 4 days after public announcment of the beta and even before the pizza party. With the new factory work flow we have some more flexibility in terms of checkin deadlines, so let's make use of that. My proposal would be: Move RC1 from October 13th to 21st for release date - checkin deadline would be 18th. Move RC2 from October 27th to November 3th - checkin deadline would be October 28th (November 1st and the monday in front are blackout in Nuremberg and we rely too much on Nuremberg to move the date where it's perfect ;( ) Move Final release from November 11th (who set that date anyway? :) to November 16th. GM would be on 11th. Note, that I don't want to move the final date too much and if we all agree to some discipline, RC2 will already be perfect and we only apply some polishing up to GM. I know that shuffles our usual weekdays for release a bit and I'm pretty sure I made some mistakes in my proposal, so please feel free to give ideas of yours. After changing the oss and non-oss repository of my openSUSE 12.1 M5 system to the factory ones, running "zypper up", and a reboot, kdm does not start anymore (there are no other repositories activated). Or rather it starts but it produces the error messages "X server died during startup" and "X server for display :0 cannot be started, session disabled". Any workaround? nomodeset does not change anything, nor does SystemV or systemd. -- fr.gr. Just submitted * 85410: conky from server:monitoring * 85411: tolua++ from devel:languages:lua Note that tolua++ is only needed at build time, it's kind of a swig for lua bindings, and used by conky for the imlib2 and cairo backends. It is not required at runtime at all. Conky is a lightweight resource monitor that sits on the root of an X window. It monitors stuff such as remote servers, temperature, disk capacity, mailboxes, etc etc... It is very widely used on all distributions. (Kinda surprising it wasn't in factory) Tolua++ is a development tool that generates glorified Lua bindings for C and C++ libraries. Conky is stated to be licensed under the GPL on the project website, but it uses some bits from other projects and is hence a mix of GPL v3+, BSD (revised) and MIT. Tolua++ is licensed under the MIT license. Conky is actively developed and has releases on a regular basis, although not too frequent (latest is 1.8.1 and from 2010-10-05). Tolua++ seems barely maintained and only had few releases (it is a fork of another project though, "tolua"), last release being in Feb 2009: http://www.codenix.com/~tolua/ Not quite critical though, as it only generates code. We need badly some page aimed to the simple user (here any administrator, even with few knowledge), let alone with 10 lines description and usefull links links. Fedora have a beginning (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/systemd - not that good) What we need is a HOWTO, showing to somebody that used system V inits before how he can do now. Hi all, It looks like i'm caught in a transition gap: With my very old box, i use misdn + asterisk1.2. Now, i want to move to another box, and heard that asterisk18 doesnot work wel with misdn1, while misdn2 is still work-in-progress. On the asterisk-list, somebody quoted: "And since Dahdi supports the important BRI card based on HFC-8S/4S colonge chip and via http://code.google.com/p/zaphfc/ also the cheap HFC-S cards. No reason anymore to use mISDN." But as far as i can see, this code is not on the OBS, not even in somebodies home directory. Could it be somewhere included? Like ../repo/network:/telephony:/asterisk/openSUSE_11.4/ or ../repo/home:/vitsoft:/asterisk-dahdi/openSUSE_11.4/ afaicr, ISDN with HFC-S was quite popular in (atleast) DE and NL. When I use 'zypper up' on Factory, I get a long list of LibreOffice components that are listed as not being updated. When I used YaST to determine why, it says "nothing provides libreoffice-icon-themes = 3.4.2.6 needed by libreoffice-3.4.2.6-1.1.x86_64". I have not tested on i686 to see if this only affects 64-bit systems. When trying to rename package sim to kde3-sim I facted the following legal problem: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=719081 === The spec file of kde3-sim and most of the licenses in the package state that the package is licensed under the GPL-2.0+. However, a single file (with header): sim/qjpegio.cpp is licensed under an old version of QT license. It offers a choice of either (1) a commercial license, (2) QPL or (3) GPL-2.0 ("only"). As we must choose choice (3) this will mean that a resulting derived work of qjpegio.cpp and the other GPL-2.0+ files in the package will need to be licensed under the GPL-2.0 "only". Thus, the spec file license should read (with comment): # the GPL-2.0 license of qjpegio.cpp may cause the entire package to be licensed # under GPL-2.0 License: GPL-2.0 There is, however, a second problem. The file plugins/yahoo/sha.c is licensed under the MPL-1.1. That license is incompatible with the GPL-2.0. So we need to determine: (1) if that file is actually used at all (2) if it is used, is it compiled/linked with GPL licensed code (3) if it is (and a derived work may have been created) upstream will need to be contacted to resolve this (4) Failing (3), it may be possible to substitute the MPL sha.c code with a functionally equivalent GPL compatible version === For now I removed the Yahoo plugin entirely. After my yeasterday zypper dup (with only minor libreoffice problems), I don't have anymore a full screen display. Hi, at the moment we seem to have the following mysql flavors in Factory: mysql-community-server mysql-cluster mariadb There might be more that I don't know about. Given that mysql is a package that needs frequent updating (both for security and for non-security bugfix reasons); I was wondering if it really makes sense to have multiple flavors of it in Factory (and thereby in openSUSE 12.1). We did so in the past for 11.3 and 11.4, and noticed that this was a problem (security updates took look to be submitted, and then they had major regressions that broke severly). So, my question is twofold: - is there anyone stepping up to maintain mariadb and mysql-cluster for the full openSUSE lifetime? - if no, who would object (and why) to dropping those variants from factory? Note that the other flavors can still be in server:database, even built for older distros, so those who really want it can use it. Hi, my sr of X11:xfce/lightdm-branding-openSUSE to Factory has been rejected on the grounds that it doesn't provide a copy of the GPL (see bnc#716059) although in fact it does include a copy from the main lightdm package. I haven't been able to get any response from the legal team either through bugzilla or via mail, could somebody please comment on this? I need to get this into Factory ASAP. [opensuse-factory] Kernel for 11.4?

Factory is currently using 2.6.36 which was released 3 weeks ago. Upstream versions tend to take about 10-11 weeks, on average, to release. The scheduled release for the first openSUSE RC is Jan 20. The scheduled release for the first RC is Jan 20. The typical development time for a kernel release, on average, is about 10-11 weeks. That puts the release of 2.6.37 around Dec 29 to Jan 12. That sounds like kind of a tight window, but the reality is that the differences in the later kernel RCs tend to be small and fix bugs. The "real" development happens in -rc1, which was released about two weeks ago. Later -rcs serve to stabilize the development that went into -rc1. So, the the feature freeze aspect of it will be a one-shot, when I update to -rc1. (Actually, I hardly ever update to -rc1 and instead use - -rc2 which tends to be more stable). I've already done the merge work for 2.6.37-rc1 since the master kernel always tracks the latest upstream. Xen is the lone exception, as it usually is, but Jan Beulich has been great about getting that completed shortly after I do the update. This time might be a little more difficult because much of the Xen code has been merged into the mainline kernel so there's some sorting out to be done. As far as testing goes, we're still early enough that we won't lose a lot of effort. I'd update Factory to 2.6.37-rc2 as soon as it is released upstream, which should be this week. Our usual corps of dedicated testers can dig in quickly. In my experience, though, the number of testers drastically increases around the RC1 release. I wish it weren't so, but it is. So revving the kernel now isn't likely to toss out a lot of testing. The biggest "feature" I'm going for is not having to backport fixes from 2.6.37. The BKL removal patches and the VFS scalability patches are going to improve performance on multicore systems. The removal of I/O barriers should also be pretty noticeable but I haven't had time to verify that yet. I've been preparing a package of python-ipaddr in OBS[0] The library is a dependency of another project I'm trying to package, and since it's a general enough library I thought I might submit it. It's very useful when working extensively with IP addresses, since it provides lots of stuff python's stdlib doesn't. I tried to follow all the guidelines for python packaging, I tried the package in my own 11.4 and it works Ok. The only thing that makes me doubt is the requirement for a CLA[1] in order to submit patches upstream. How does the community deal with this? If the CLA is no issue, I'll try to submit the package to factory before the next milestone. Why start with a distro that is already based on "old" hardware. Nearly all tablets are using a Cortex A9 (mostly in the form of a Tegra 2). That has one small downside. This one doesn't have a NEON FPU at least not one that meets the full specs. What are the plans for a openSuSE ARM distro. Where should it run on? I received numerous bugreports regarding KDE3 packages from the legal team. It is very strange given that the packages are essentially the same as were packaged in openSUSE previously. Due to a number of interdependancies on packages that are not ready for Tumbleweed, and other interactions with the system that are causing problems for some users, I'm going to remove systemd from Tumbleweed today to allow the developers to spend more time on getting it stable for Factory and 12.1 instead of having to chase down problems that are specific to Tumbleweed only. Drivers like gspcav1 do not build on 11.x and rpm -ql kernel-desktop | grep gspca Tells me they seem to be now included in the kernel. Hello, AppArmor 2.7 (beta1) is in Factory since some hours. Short version: please test it and report any problems you notice. Long version: I'm quite new in maintaining the AppArmor package (I became maintainer last saturday ;-) Additionally, I dropped a 380k patch that changed the whole upstream buildsystem to use automake [1]. In other words: the whole build process of the AppArmor package is totally new, and it might be that this introduced some regression I didn't notice yet. A known "regression" is that the tomcat_apparmor package is no longer built - it is unmaintained upstream since quite some time and failed to build. If anyone needs this, please step up and help maintaining it ;-) Please test if the AppArmor 2.7 beta1 package works as expected on your system - if not, please reply to this mail or open a bugreport. (Success reports are also welcome, of course.) If you don't have a Factory installation available, you can also download packages for 11.3 and 11.4 from security:apparmor:factory. In theory, they should work on those systems without changing the kernel side, but I can't promise that ;-) (they seem to work on my 11.4 system) Finally: thanks to everybody who helped me to get the AppArmor package updated by personal support on the conference and online support on IRC. rpmlint complains, appropriately, when the package group does not belong to a list of approved groups. I did a clean install today of factory and during first boot up I get a fsck error. A screenshot is attached, but it you can't open it, the gist of the error is that fsck can't find fsck.btrfs and puts my btrfs partition to read only. I am given the option of mounting my root partition myself, but this quietly fails. Anybody know what's up? Thanks, Steve

Hello, Is it the intended behavior? When I install factory, sysvinit is used on the running system. But as soon as I reboot it, systemd is used... Holla! I realized I cannot feel comfortable with a mercurial as git user. It is supposed to be git-like distribute vcs, but the amount of differences is too much. Some of them are easy to handle git format-patch HEAD~ vs hg log -r tip > name.patch But sometimes it's very suprising for me. For example when I learned about a fact, that local branches are not supported by default http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/Branch http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/LocalBranches http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/LocalbranchExtension or you cannot easy delete your topic named branch you made and did not publish http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/PruningDeadBranches And that confusion exceeded my born lazyness. So behold devel:tools:scm/hg-fast-export which I already submitted into Factory (request 82210). I "stole" some usefull things like manual pages and git-hg script from Debian, so it's really simple to use git-hg clone <mercurial-repository-url> and continue by man git-hg. I found, by analysing a not properly working /etc/init.d/amavis script that the utilty checkproc returns different return codes compared to this utility in openSUSE 11.4. Hello all VMware-Workstation-Full-8 came out this week so I downloaded an evaluation version and installed it on a fresh install of openSUSE-DVD-Build0250-x86_64 (M5 with all the updates). Once the installation of VMware-Workstation 8 finished I re booted openSUSE 12.1 and copied and unzipped a backup of an existing WinXP VMware machine I then started VMware-Workstation 8 and added the evaluation key. I have been testing 3.0.4 with Tumbleweed, and noticed that after a suspend to ram cycle, the NIC would come back online with only 10Mbit speeds for my GigE network.
