I created a merge request for desktop-data three weeks ago. It's just a minor patch that doesn't really fix anything but a warning from kbuildsycoca4. I'm not sure about how Gitorious works, maintainers are supposed to notice the "1" in the merge requests section or they receive an email notifying it? And since I'm on it. Since I updated my 11.3 system to KDE to 4.5 the "inline" part of the menu is not honored... Expected behavior? [opensuse-factory] Kernel for 11.4?

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all - Since technically we're in feature freeze for 11.4, I thought I'd put this out for discussion. Factory is currently using 2.6.36 which was released 3 weeks ago. Upstream versions tend to take about 10-11 weeks, on average, to release. The scheduled release for the first openSUSE RC is Jan 20. The scheduled release for the first RC is Jan 20. The typical development time for a kernel release, on average, is about 10-11 weeks. That puts the release of 2.6.37 around Dec 29 to Jan 12. That sounds like kind of a tight window, but the reality is that the differences in the later kernel RCs tend to be small and fix bugs. The "real" development happens in -rc1, which was released about two weeks ago. Later -rcs serve to stabilize the development that went into -rc1. So, the the feature freeze aspect of it will be a one-shot, when I update to -rc1. (Actually, I hardly ever update to -rc1 and instead use - -rc2 which tends to be more stable). I've already done the merge work for 2.6.37-rc1 since the master kernel always tracks the latest upstream. Xen is the lone exception, as it usually is, but Jan Beulich has been great about getting that completed shortly after I do the update. This time might be a little more difficult because much of the Xen code has been merged into the mainline kernel so there's some sorting out to be done. As far as testing goes, we're still early enough that we won't lose a lot of effort. I'd update Factory to 2.6.37-rc2 as soon as it is released upstream, which should be this week. Our usual corps of dedicated testers can dig in quickly. In my experience, though, the number of testers drastically increases around the RC1 release. I wish it weren't so, but it is. So revving the kernel now isn't likely to toss out a lot of testing. The biggest "feature" I'm going for is not having to backport fixes from 2.6.37. The BKL removal patches and the VFS scalability patches are going to improve performance on multicore systems. The removal of I/O barriers should also be pretty noticeable but I haven't had time to verify that yet. I wonder whether our IPv6 settings are the right ones after reading the following article (sorry, German only): http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/IPv6-Smartphones-gefaehrden-Privatsp… which references: http://www.heise.de/netze/hotline/IPv6-anonym-1100727.html We set use_tempaddr to 0 by default (disabling privacy extensions) and set it to 1 if enabled. The article advises to use 2. Background: By default (value 0) my IPv6 address will be derived from my hardware (macaddr) and therefore be the same independend how I connect to the internet. So, it's easy to track my computer... So, my proposal is to do the following two changes: * Use 2 instead of 1 in /etc/rc.d/boot.ipconfig for enabling the privacy extensions * Set IPV6_PRIVACY=yes in /etc/sysconfig/sysctl Any concerns with this change? Objective Caml (OCaml) [1] is a multiparadigm language in the ML family of languages. OCaml is itself already in the openSUSE distribution, located in devel:languages:misc. I have located three other packages that use it: - lablgtk2 (in devel:languages:misc) - ocaml-facile (in KDE:Distro:Factory) - unison (in network) I have recently submitted a large patch to the ocaml package in devel:languages:misc, and I have 25 other OCaml library packages in my home project, accumulated over the last several months [2]. Upon approval, I will submit them there, excluding camlimages, which currently has a build problem on 64-bit architectures. Since there are already a large number of OCaml packages in Fedora, I have modified various spec files from there when packages from there already exist. Those that were derived from fedora are marked as such. The Fedora Contributor License Agreement [3] permits users to re-license them as seen fit. All spec files are placed under the MIT license, unless there was already a license upon them (as was the case with the ocaml package, which came from SUSE itself). As for packaging guidelines, I have attempted to follow those specified by the Fedora project [4]. As such, they tend to conform to whatever specifications that rpmlint uses. Furthermore, to ensure that inter-package dependencies resolve correctly, I have enabled the internal dependency generator on builds that were on openSUSE distributions before the current Factory build. Hi, because xulrunner as a stable platform is basically dead with Mozilla's new rapid release cycle we more or less need to remove the packages from Factory. This includes: mozilla-xulrunner192 mozilla-xulrunner20 Version 2.0 is already out of upstream support while 1.9.2 will live for some more weeks (not exactly sure for how long). According to OBS the following packages are still depending on these: mozilla-xulrunner192: google-gadgets libgluezilla0 libreoffice libreoffice-bootstrap libreoffice-components libreoffice-libs-extern moonlight moonshine mozilla-xulrunner20: PackageKit bundle-lang-gnome-extras chmsee icedtea-web libproxy-plugins rhythmbox There are probably only JS engine consumers (libproxy-plugins?) which should have a replacement already in Factory with the js package? Then there are NPAPI only consumers I guess which just need some header files? What else do those packages need? That's important to me to find out what exactly we need to provide in Factory to be able to remove the full xulrunner packages. Also if some package is missing in the above list for whatever reason, please let me know. Hi, today I've noticed inconsistencies with logfile permissions and logrotate which leads me to think about a feature request. For example /var/log/localmessages seems to be created at installation time with 0644 root:root But the first log rotation changed this to 0640 and my users complained about that. The permission change is caused by /etc/logrotate.d/syslog: .... /var/log/warn /var/log/messages /var/log/allmessages /var/log/localmessages /var/log/firewall /var/log/acpid /var/log/NetworkManager { [...] create 640 root root [...] } So there are at least two places where these permissions are defined, one at installation time and the other in /etc/logrotate* Since "man logrotate" says: create mode owner group [...] Any of the log file attributes may be omitted, in which case those attributes for the new file will use the same values as the original log file for the omitted attributes. I would suggest to change logrotate config from "create 640 root root" to just "create" and to track these logfiles within /etc/permissions* too. This would make things more generic, simple and consistent. I can boot into safe mode but not into regular 3.0.0-38. I have an Nvidia video subsystem and what happens is the LCd seems to go into some sort of test mode flashing black, then red, green, then blue then white. Neither wvdial nor wvdialconf ran as root can find the modem at /dev/ttyS4: wvdialconf: Editing `/etc/wvdial.conf'. Scanning your serial ports for a modem. ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up. I'll have to try the hwinfo. I did set up the modem through Yast2, but even if I didn't or did it incorrectly, wouldn't wvdialconf still find it? [opensuse-factory] yast software management failure

I did an upgrade to M3 last night. Just now in KDE3 I opened YaST2, then clicked on Software Management. Instead of getting it, an xmessage window opened up. It appears to be in 4pt type, so I have no idea what it says. Is there a way to configure such message windows to open using a legible font size? [opensuse-factory] Coming change: PulseAudio configuration enforced by default

Hi, For a while now, it has been possible to enable/disable PulseAudio by setting the PULSEAUDIO_ENABLE variable in /etc/sysconfig/sound and by calling the setup-pulseaudio helper. However, by default, there was no such PULSEAUDIO_ENABLE variable in /etc/sysconfig/sound (fillup wasn't called), and on new installs, this setting was not propagated to various files. This resulted in no real enforcement of the PA configuration. I'm fixing this, see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=707703 for a small discussion. With the fix, when the pulseaudio package is installed/updated, relevant configuration files are updated based on the PULSEAUDIO_ENABLE setting. This might impact people who either had a customized sound configuration for PulseAudio (ie, PA disabled for, say, libao but enabled for alsa), or for people who had manually disabled PulseAudio with just the setup-pulseaudio helper: PULSEAUDIO_ENABLE will be set to "yes" if it's not already defined, and that will forcefully enable PA everywhere. The solution is to edit /etc/sysconfig/sound and set PULSEAUDIO_ENABLE to either "no" (which means "don't use PulseAudio") or "custom" (which means "do not touch the PulseAudio-related configuration). This should also get mentioned in release notes for 12.1. What's the best way to make sure this happens? Hello Mates, since two times (?) i have trouble after updating the Tumbleweed Kernel. After finishing the Update i make a reboot. Then after the reboot the first and second part of GRUB starts. But after choosing the new Kernel i''m getting the black screen of GRUB. Just after a manual adding of the root device in /boot/grub/menu.lst he comes up. But if the next updates i must each time manual hack the menu.lst i think it's too much work. updated this am from MS2 to MS3 in a VBox via zypper dup, rebooted and have not experienced any noticable problems. Running full-screen session of KDE4 and using for day-to-day. good job folks This MS3 is better than several of the earlier golds from what I have seen so far. I have i7 and nvidia. A number of multimedia-related libraries and programs have a soft dependency on ffmpeg, which they can make use of for various tasks. These libraries and programs need to be built against ffmpeg to have this capability. I was told that there might be either a version of ffmpeg that only includes headers or one that is stripped down and "safe" to use from a legal perspective available somewhere in openSUSE. I was hoping to see if these could be used for building these packages. I recently cloned a 40G Seagate HD to a 80G WD, then replaced the smaller with the larger. Now I get error messages about not finding any Seagate partitions when mkinitrd runs. Where could the bogus Perl-Bootloader by-id WARNING data be coming from? In 11.4 it worked correctly and in 12.1 it fails This is a 64bit machine and I have tried openSuSE flash in /usr/lib64/browser-plugin and it never has worked here. So I have downloaded a flash plugin that works like crazy as "root" but not as a "user". My guess is it is a permission issue. Hello all, I'm using tumbleweed and would like to install virtualbox, however it depends on virtualbox-host-kmp-desktop version 4.0.4_k2.6.37.1_1.2-1.6.1 which in turn depends on kernel-desktop-base version 2.6.37.6-0.5.1. However tumbleweed has kernel-desktop version 2.6.39.3-37.1 which means I'd need to downgrade my kernel to use virtualbox. Could tumbleweed provide a version of virtualbox for the newer kernels? It looks like a number of Linux-specific python modules are not being built with Linux 3. There is a fix for the 2.7 branch available, but I don't know if it will be making it into the version that openSUSE will be shipping with openSUSE 12.1. If not, I would strongly consider including them, since breaking Linux python interfaces seems like a pretty serious problem. The problem also exists with python 3.x, so it would probably need to be included there as well. Well at this point I have replaced many things thought off as possible defective software like flash and firefox as tests. Made sure perrmissions and chmod was allowing it to work. Problem is nothing has changed it still is a permission problem as proven by the root user is working and all users are not able to see any flash type files. The browser comes up and all you see is a black small screen with no image. I have even completely tarred up and removed all /usr/lib64/browser-plugins only leaving libflashplayer.so with root.root and 755. Nothing seems to change the image. Hi, I upgraded 12.1 M2 to M3 with Yast2. Kernel is now 3.0.0-rc7-2-desktop Booting it succeeds only using bootparameter nomodeset, otherwise a blank screen is the result. M2 booted OK, as does 11.4. Graphics hardware is a GeForce 8600 GT. console and when I try to login I just get also this message and cannot boot. Some observations: Put the ISO file onto a USB stick via dd and tested install on a Dell Mini 10. - Network cards not detected during install (bug filed) ~ neither the Realtek Ethernet card nor the Broadcom wireless card were picked up - GDM does not work when trying to log in as "Other" (bug filed) - Install procedure drops out of YaST and puts me into some kind of "secondary" mode where I have to select the device to install from and specify the location of the sources. Not sure whet to do with this one. Is there a "boot log" available after each boot up of openSUSE? I know there are a lot of components/scripts that run during boot time so a unified log is probably a pipe dream, but is there anything similar? I got an error message during first boot up of 12.1 M3, but I couldn't read what was wrong, so I'm trying to find out and then report it. [opensuse-factory] Mesa 7.11 RC1 released : where to submit ?

Hi, Today is Mesa 7.11 first release candidate released. I packaged it, however I don't know where to submit it. I highly doubt that X11:XOrg is the right repository, because it contains only stable versions. However OpenSUSE:Factory seems to branch its X11 related package from it... I would like Mesa 7.11 RC1 to appear for next Milestone, as Mesa 7.11 is a major milestone of Mesa project. Lots of performance improvements and bug fixes over 7.10 are expected ; on the other hand, it might break things (as usual when there are big changes) If it can ship early in OpenSUSE developpement, more bugs could be reported upstream before final relase and won't have to wait for a minor revision to be fixed. There's a forum post giving error - http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/pre-release-beta… The Tumbleweed uers, tried kernel 3.0 because of bugs seen with the stable kernel series syncing notebook to Windows server. Bugzilla entry expected. I haven't found a reference to laptop-mode-tools since 3.0 announced, last change by Tue 07 Dec 2010 12:00:00 GMT coolo(a)novell.com - prereq init script haldaemon This may be another unnoticed HAL dependency to. I think this probably will be reportable in bugzilla, but I don't have laptop Factory install, & the Tumbleweed user is obviously using a pre-release kernel, so thought a quick heads up best first, before committing "bureaucracy". Hi, Today is supposed to be the release of Milestone3. But as I still haven't got green light from testing team (and they are on red because of the kernel OOPS with rc6) I would like to delay the release. There are live cds released as build126 and factory that report itself as Milestone3 and I hope we can get the kernel problem out till early next week. The problem is that RC6 boots fine for both me and Jeff, so we need more data on what the problem is. This is just too good not to be exploited in 12.1, fixes a very long standing annoyance since (7.1?) when Online Kernel update was introduced, IMO this ought to be the distro default. Thanks for the Lizard page to documenting it. So I've put in a feature request - "Preserve Running Kernel On Kernel Update by Default" https://features.opensuse.org/312647 Hopefully there'll be support for it, so this edit to /etc/zypp/zypp.conf becomes uncessary on almost every install. # multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel) The latest/running worked for me so far using factory adding kernels from the Kernel Team HEAD & stable repos, if you want a guinea pig to try it on my Tumbleweed install, I'd be very happy to do so. First of all I want to ask whether hal will be available under 12.1 or it is to be decided? My second question is as follows. As you know, hal is depreciated and people who prepare 12.1 want to remove dependency on hal from different packages. For instance they want to remove it from kdebase3-runtime which will be included in 12.1. But hal is necessary for normal function of KDE3 so we, who use KDE3 as a desktop want hal functions to be enabled. That's why my question. Is it possible to build a package with hal if hal is available in the repository and without hal otherwise? How to properly organize the check on whether the package exists in the repo at the buildtime? Hi all, it has been two weeks since the latest status, so here is a new update on the systemd status on Factory : - nobody has yet tested how install and firstboot reacts with systemd. We definitively need tests on that and some expertise on how the install process work to fix it. - basic support for systemctl in chkconfig and insserv : DONE (waiting review by maintainer) - a patch has been submitted to upstream systemd to parse insserv.conf : DONE and MERGED UPSTREAM - Yast2 support for systemd : need help from people in Yast team - /usr as a separate partition : the solution is to mount /usr from initramfs. One of our initramfs guys thinks it can be done but it needs more investigations. This work would also resolve /usr issues for sysvinit boot. - $ALL will not be supported by systemd : opened bug report for the various users : SuSEfirewall2_setup (bnc#696902), suse-ami-tools (bnc#705502), stoppreload (not sure it is worth opening a bug, since systemd takes care of readahead), vboxes (bnc#705505) - X-Interactive support in systemd is not working properly : it would be nice to get it fixed upstream but nobody is working on it (help welcome of course). - openvpn and apache2 are both relying on X-Interactive : packages using systemd ask-password service have been done (available on home:fcrozat:systemd project), they are waiting testing and review from maintainers. - startup console is getting mixed up (if you disable quiet) : it is caused by agetty from latest util-linux package. Fortunately, it is fixed in upstream git, thanks to Werner Fink, so next upstream release will fix it. - console keyboard configuration might not be working properly : currently, systemd is parsing /etc/sysconfig/keyboard but isn't doing all the various (and sometime scary) commands /etc/init.d/kbd is doing. We need to fix this (volunteers ? ) - somebody showed me a nice systemd integration in gfxboot, where you will be able to choose between SysV and systemd (and even direct shell) by using function keys in graphical grub interface. Look at Factory in a few days ! - I've added some info on how to get some debugging for systemd, on the wiki (changes are pending review ATM) - RPM macros are progressing : * we have a set of initial macros working fine, but after discussing with some people, we might enhance the suse implementation to automagically handle legacy initscripts (this part will not be pushed upstream) * the way to handle migration from sysv initscript to systemd service files might still need some work. If we could avoid triggers, it would be best (because we should avoid triggers and with OBS, it is very difficult to get them working properly) * macros are still sitting on systemd package but the plan is to move them on rpm package when they'll be stable enough In short, things are going in the right direction but we are not done yet and we really need your help : either on the issues I mentioned (feel free to say "I want to help on this" here or on #opensuse-factory) or to do more tests or even to start creating .service files (but we still need to fix the issues listed above). This card has two external DVI ports. It may or may not have internal connectors for VGA output, but even if it does, I have nothing to connect them to. The motherboard has one i915G video port, which the BIOS treats as non-existent due to the presence of the 8600 GT PCIe card. Xorg.0.log claims there is VGA1 & VGA2 as well as DVI0 and DVI1. With no xorg.conf file, X works using nv driver, but stuck at 96 DPI. When I try to use an xorg.conf file, copied from a different (11.4) system with onboard Intel video and a Radeon PCIe card, (edited from radeon driver to nv driver in 'Section "Device"') so as to customize DPI, X always fails to start. My last try used http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Linux/Xorg/xorg.conf-nv-gx28b-all-outputs-disconnec… and produced http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Linux/Xorg/xorg.0.log-gx28b-nv-all-outputs-disconne… which reports all output ports as disconnected. Other editions of xorg.conf just produce other types of errors, like no device found or no screens with usable configuration. Can anyone see what it will take to fix this problem? Or is this just an Xorg/NV bug in Factory? I don't have this problem using ordinary onboard Intel video on other systems, and this dual DVI-only is the only recent NV chip gfxcard I have. I tried booting using a DVI to VGA adapter. That only works until X starts. The screen blanks and the OS hard locks starting runlevel 5.
