There now is work on zypp to allow automatic deinstallation of older kernels when this option is enabled as far as I know.
That looks fantastic. I have about 10 kernels now because I don't get around to deleting them as often as I should.
Once you feel good with this, can we get in tumbleweed?
If enough people confirm me that it works, I will forward it to tumbleweed.
This is just too good not to be exploited in 12.1, fixes a very long standing annoyance since (7.1?) when Online Kernel update was introduced, IMO this ought to be the distro default. Thanks for the Lizard page to documenting it. So I've put in a feature request - "Preserve Running Kernel On Kernel Update by Default" https://features.opensuse.org/312647 Hopefully there'll be support for it, so this edit to /etc/zypp/zypp.conf becomes uncessary on almost every install. # multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel) The latest/running worked for me so far using factory adding kernels from the Kernel Team HEAD & stable repos, if you want a guinea pig to try it on my Tumbleweed install, I'd be very happy to do so. I'll let you know if a Kernel:HEAD update causes anything odd :) Regards Rob -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Filing the 10642367 feature request on this doesn't push the issue further forward. We had discussions regarding how to handle kernel updates in a save and sane way several times before. Cf. http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2010-08/msg01313.html I love the wording "feature cemetery" more and more. BTW Even Microsoft handles boot issues more flexible. I'm very sorry that I have to spread the wound and put some salt on top of it. :/ Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

The retention of the latest & running kernel, is in 12.1 Factory already, to those using "multiversion kernel" setting. So this is feasible and the time to discuss such change, is before the release freezes ie now, not a "wouldn't it be nice" at RC1. To make updates safer for all, commenting in the "multiversion" line is all that's required. How will that actually happen without a Feature Change request? I'm so old and lame ... ;)

Branch the libzypp package, modify the default zypp.conf to enable the line multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel) submit request your change back. If you need more guidance don't hesitate to talk to me at freenode.

I would try to save this extra work. We'll see if the suggested approach works or fails. :) It's welcome if you quote the submit request ID here. Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany
