Hi all! Next week I will move cronie[1] package to Factory, so it will replace old cron. If someone is against this step, please just write what's wrong. [opensuse-factory] syslog-ng update

Hello, I prepared updated syslog-ng packages with the close supervision of Marius Tomaschewski, the maintainer of the syslog-ng package. They are available in home:czanik in the openSUSE BS. I would like to see these packages included in Factory, to replace the ancient 2.0 syslog-ng, but MT seems to have disappeared (no response to e-mails in the past two weeks). Questions: - it works fine on my machines, but could anybody else test it? - what is the proper way to get syslog-ng updated in factory, if the maintainer seems to be unavailable? - I have now both 3.0 and 3.1 packages there, called syslog-ng and syslog-ng31. The ultimate goal is to include 3.1. Should I drop the current syslog-ng package and rename syslog-ng31 to syslog-ng? Forward this from the linux-xfs list, in hoping that decision-makers will consider XFS as the default suse OS install choice. It continually bests other file systems in optimized configuration performance tests and these new improvements sound like they only add more speed to the equation. For nearly all systems, disk speed is the bottle neck, so using the best solution possible should be strongly considered the default choice for all users -- regardless of 'political' concerns (which seem to often over-rule practicality, unfortunately). Linda p.s. I am not part of the xfs project. I've just used it with open suse (or previously, Suse) since ~ 2002 and have never regretted it. Current filesystem read rates using XFS are about 1GB/second on sustained multi-gigabyte reads. I'm pleased to state that using the experimental "delaylog" mount option (in vanilla linux-2.6.35) we measured a 17% performance increase for our benchmark scenario. (Other mount-options in use both before and after the "delaylog" option: noatime,nodiratime,nobarrier) That's a lot given that XFS was the fastest performing file-system for this application already. It's also a promising result regarding stability, as several other tests (using e.g. reiser4 or ceph) in the past led to crashes in the same benchmark scenario. For build-compare, we compare that the files are the same of the current build and the last build - and thus throw away the new build if they are the same. For this we can ignore all timestamps. Fellow developers and users, just a heads-up: moments ago I have submitted a new Python version 2.7. This version contains many new and interesting features, and only a small chance of breaking existing code: no backwards-incompatible changes, and no big changes worth mentioning. For more details see [1]. There is one thing notable for people who write or maintain software that embeds Python: the new function PySys_SetArgvEx [2] does the job originally done by PySys_SetArgv, but closes a nasty security problem with the latter [3][4]. Most software should be fixed by now, but please review your packages anyway. have fun m. I am aware of the OSS iscan-free, but yet, the non-OSS iscan-proprietary-drivers has so far been a simple and reliable application for my Epson scanner with ADF or Photo adapter options. The previous iscan-proprietary-drivers-2.10.0 for openSUSE 11.2 was available here http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/non-oss/suse/i586/ Why is it left out on openSUSE 11.3 ? [opensuse-factory] Status: distribution

Hi, I plan to publish the first 11.4 milestone this week. The changes aren't that big (for once we still have 2.6.34 kernel), but we have a new libzypp media backend and new gnome and kde major versions, that should suffice for a new milestone. We have still > 60 failing packages, but nothing I would consider out of control - still it would be good if more would look around and fix left and right and/or do version updates of packages they care for. Feel free to bookmark the build service URL behind http://preview.tinyurl.com/2wzh836 The polished roadmap I will push into the wiki this week, I decided against any change in the milestone counting, but michl and me agreed to always talk about "Milestone X of 6" when we talk about milestones in writing.
