Hello, I prepared updated syslog-ng packages with the close supervision of Marius Tomaschewski, the maintainer of the syslog-ng package. They are available in home:czanik in the openSUSE BS. I would like to see these packages included in Factory, to replace the ancient 2.0 syslog-ng, but MT seems to have disappeared (no response to e-mails in the past two weeks). Questions: - it works fine on my machines, but could anybody else test it? - what is the proper way to get syslog-ng updated in factory, if the maintainer seems to be unavailable? - I have now both 3.0 and 3.1 packages there, called syslog-ng and syslog-ng31. The ultimate goal is to include 3.1. Should I drop the current syslog-ng package and rename syslog-ng31 to syslog-ng? Hello, I am planning to run regular (e.g. daily to weekly) semi-automatic tests of current factory .isos to increase installability/testability of those and milestone releases for testers, thus increasing overall quality. Todays score is poor. Out of 5 tested .isos only the i586-NET got past the install stage and even then hung during the printer configuration phase, so 0.5/5 would be a fair total. I run this on KVM with a self-made perl script generating keyboard-input and capturing pictures (currently 2/sec). As a nice side-effect, there can now be seen compact ogg-theora-videos of the current boot/install having 6x speed at http://www3.zq1.de/bernhard/mirror/opensuse/video/ You might also notice the predicted remaining time on the NET-install to jump up and down. Also the "Loading Installation System" part of the NET-boot is suspiciously long at 100%... and does not have a size given. If you are interested in those scripts, you can get them from http://www3.zq1.de/bernhard/git/autoinst/ but they are nowhere near perfect, yet. have a lot of fun -- Bernhard M. Hello, I was wondering if there is a definite decision about how to go on forward with the seperation of Contrib and mainline Factory. If I remember correctly Contrib was the place to submit stuff to as normal contributor to openSUSE, now Factory is open for everybody to submit stuff, based on reputation, skills and whatnot. So what's the future of Contrib now, this looks like a limbo state to me. Also does openSUSE try to be as inclusive as debian now (everything in one big repository) or seperate atleast into Factory and Contrib? Or even further with repositories like network:utilities, games, GNOME:Extra, KDE:Community etc. which currently have a 'rolling release' way of life. I can't come up with a big weighing pro for any of the possibilities, but I just can't say what model is currently followed. All, Let me know where the below should be posted if not the factory list. It relates to how 11.3 will handle SSD discards. === There is currently a fairly large thread on the Ext4 mailing list that I've been participating in. The basic conclusion is that for SSD based drives that can benefit from discards, there are two existing approaches. One is in the current kernels and it involves invoking discard any time data blocks are freed up. Thus it can mean large number of discards per second. This code was written and accepted into the kernel prior to any hardware to really test it with. Apparently now that vendors are shipping SSDs that support discard, that methodology is proving to be a loser and SSD performance is lower if it is enabled, instead of higher which is the entire goal of the discards. I haven't seen benchmarks yet for this with high-end SCSI array backends. If they too are bad, the existing logic is very likely to be tossed from the kernel. Not sure what will replace it in the kernel, if anything. Alternatively, hdparm was enhanced a year or so ago to have several discard related functionalities. That functionality is already in 11.2 and factory, so there's no issue there. But hdparm is only providing base functionality and it needs a script to actually invoke it correctly and cause the appropriate sectors to be discarded. Fortunately Mark Lord (the hdparm maintainer) is now also including "wiper.sh" with hdparm that will scan a filesystem (ext4 and xfs for sure and possibly others) and invoke discard in a very efficient way. I don't think 11.2 or factory are including that script, but I'd like to see it go in as the opensuse 11.3 methodology for calling discard on a SSD. That will mean including the script, testing it as part of opensuse, and getting it in the nightly cron scripts or something. oo3 even as recent as today still has a bug. It is openSuSE's version and is still a pain. It came from a zypper dup from days a go and attempted updated today. Still the same problem "oofromtemplate". It has been in M5 and M6. "creation of executable memory area failed: Too many open files". ooo3 comes up and request fixing the file last opened. Hi. Is anything wrong with Gnome in M6? Installation process uses Clearlooks theme (probably) [1] No sonar theme is used by default (never mind, because i don´t like this theme). By default is used Clearlooks. Although are Sonar and Gilouche themes installed, they aren´t available in Appearance ->Theme. Main menu (SLAB) is missing by default. Menu bar is used instead. Two panels are used - top and bottom, not only one. No network icon available in systray. What does it mean? Can we expect some radical modifications? Or is it just a bug? Is there anything I can try on cmdline other than textmode=1 to prevent lockup on i845G when installation tries to switch to GUI? How do I tell installer on cmdline to use something other than intel driver? I see nothing about this on http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc So far failure using alternatively: vga=0x305 vga=normal modeset=0 sax2=1 failsafe ddc=0 noddc I use Grub to load the installation kernel and initrd from local disk instead of burning isos, and don't see any way to access the files in loader/ to see what the options are supposed to be. Thanks to javier on IRC for reminding me about i915.modeset=0, which works. :-) I added a Modeset section to http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc with the best information I knew. I've been having lots of problems installing the 11.3 milestones on a Geode based Panel PC. This is a reasonably recent machine (purchased 2008) albeit low spec - 500MHz CPU, 1G RAM and 8G CF card. Built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, though the vt6655 module for these seems very buggy (#597299). The latest issue I'm facing is that the display auto-configuration gets it wrong - the text during boot is legible (mode 0x315, display is 800x600 native) but later splits to two different (but possibly related) problems: Text consoles (Control-Alt-F1 etc) show just a mass of near-random colours, like my old Sinclair spectrum did when it overheated. However, the system hasn't crashed: Control-Alt-F7 takes me to XFCE (lightweight desktop) which runs OK, except that the display resolution seems wrong and the title bar of each window is corrupt. Looking at /var/log/messages/Xorg.log gives few clues, the Geode LX video chipset seems to be recognised and at 800x600, but I don't know where else to look. Hi, I'd like to submit the package 'picard' which contains MusicBrainz Picard, a music file tag editor. This package uses only free components (unlike other 'picard' packages) and adds some useful plugins. My question is which devel project is suited best for it. It's a python-qt4 based GPLv2 app that seems not to be packaged yet in the official repos. It can be found in the project 'home:saschpe' [1]. [opensuse-factory] gnome keyring working for anyone?

Hi factory testers, (I know that opensuse-gnome would be the more appropriate list, but I want to first check if it works for anyone at all). I cannot get gnome keyring to work at all, means: neither nm-applet nor pidgin store the passwords in the keyring, pidgin stores them unobscured in .purple. I also never get asked for a master password. I removed everything .gnome, .gconf, .purple, I also tried a new user. I have a system that has KDE as default, but I installed a truckload of GNOME packages since yesterday, so I think I should not be missing anything anymore (I can also log into GNOME at the KDM login screen). Hi I've just added libvdpau as package to openSUSE:Factory. Background is Bug #596481. I would like to see it included on openSuSE 11.3, since I've adjusted also x11-video-nvidiaG02, which now requires it beginning with openSUSE 11.3. If anybody could give it a try together with the current nvidia packages this would be great. It comes up with a boot splash, a start menu and select the spreadsheet option. ps ax out - /usr/lib/ooo3/program/soffice.bin -splash-pipe=5 up come the spreadsheet. Open file, it comes up with data and it locks up. The end Minimize it and call it back up. [opensuse-factory] Live install (LVM) broken in Factory?

I downloaded the M5 Gnome Live CD in order to give it a go, and then attempted to do a live install. I chose an LVM partition setup, and at the point the installer attempted to mount the root partition it failed, saying it had failed to mount "/dev/system/root on /" (apologies I'm getting this from memory rather than a log file). I'm now trying an install from the Live CD using a partition-based setup, and it appears to be working. So, can anyone confirm my problem? The release notes for M5 featured the text "Added xdiskusage, a visual disk-space analyzer." but as far as I can tell it _hasn't_ really been added. It's available in the dev project X11:Utilities, but it's not available in the factory distribution, and it doesn't even appear as a package in "osc ls openSUSE:Factory". So, should it be in Factory? Guys, I've read several development threads about the security fundamentals of the present HAL implementation and I have read that HAL is being completely removed from the picture. (i.e. HAL free Xorg 1.8, etc...). The issue seems to be some fundamental flaw in the present implementation and the argument is whether it requires tossing the complete HAL stack or if a low level redesign to remove the flaw can be done while preserving most of the current way HAL works (the details of which pass well over my head) But that does prompt the question: "What is opensuse doing in this regard and is there a plan to address it?" Before writing to bugzilla, just to see if you know this already demo dvd, openSUSE 11.2, 32 bits on an old IDE disk, HP/Compaq system with IDE/SATA, gparted and YaST are not able to open the disk to change partitionning when fdisk and cfdisk can do very easily. Parted sees no partition. same system, YaST boot manager from install dvd or running session can't make a good GRUB boot, when the recovery system of the same dvd can (seems related with disk order) reproductible. Hey Group; I have again found that openSuSE's version of Firefox is missing functionality. It is missing many file.so or atleast the count of files differs. Download Firefox from mozilla.org, install it and things work. I recently filed a bug (#597299) regarding a problem with bluetooth / WiFi module vt6655-stage crashing the kernel with an Oops during boot. No response to the bug report yet (still at NEW, not assigned - I imagine the team is very busy at the moment, so no surprise there). So to try to debug this I thought I could use kernel parameter "BrokenModules" to stop this module vt6655_stage.ko from loading. However, none of "BrokenModules=vt6655", "BrokenModules=vt6655-stage" and "BrokenModules=vt6655_stage" have any effect, the module still loads and crashes the system. I can see this by using a serial console. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong / why it doesn't work? BTW: it's not in the initrd (checked /etc/sysconfig/kernel & confirmed by opening up the initrd with cpio to check). Renaming the module e,g, to vt6655_stage_DONOTUSE.ko initially worked and phase 2 of the installation ran, somehow it reinstated the module though and now it's failing in exactly the same way. It works interactively for me, except on selecting to save configuration it exits without saving anything to /etc/X11 or /root. :-( kernel 2.6.34-rc3-3-desktop on socket 462 Sempron cmdline: root=/blah noresume splash=off vga=0x305 3 radeon.modeset=0 With rv200/7500 if after booting runlevel 3 I try to start runlevel 5 without any xorg.conf the system locks up requiring reset button to continue. Seamless Boot Experience for OpenSUSE Factory. ============================================== With KMS (kernel mode setting) and a KMS aware X driver we can greatly improve the boot experience on OpenSUSE and offer the user a seamless transition from the moment the kernel takes over graphics to the login screen of the display manage. Currently there are a few pieces missing on Factory to do this, I've created a project on home:eeich:BootProj which adds those pieces to the respecitve packages. Please add: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/eeich:/BootPrj/openSUSE_Fac… to try this out. For the implementation I've looked at the Plymouth project to see if this is already feasable to use. The feature of Plymouth are: * It provides a fully user space implemantation of a boot splash for a system running in KMS. * It supports various splash plugins. * It provides a way to enter passwords duing the boot process. I found some deficiencies: * It falls back to text mode (no splash image) in VESA-fb mode (ie, when KMS isn't active). * It doesn't allow control over the progress bar. * I the password entry facility was working unreliably for me. * It requires considerable modifications to initrd and the bootup scripts. All in all Plymouth doesn't appear to be in a stage where I feel comfortable to deploy it on the OpenSUSE, yet. Instead I decided to check what needed to be done to support "flicker free" boot using the kernel based OpenSUSE bootsplash. Here is what I had to do: 1. Extend the OpenSUSE bootsplash /proc/splash syntax to a. support copying a bootsplash image from one vt to another: echo "copy 0 6" > /proc/splash copies the splash image from vt1 to vt7. b. turn off the progress bar entirely echo "@6 show -1" > /proc/splash turns off the progress bar on vt7. c. finally bump the version number on the bootsplash code so that the presence of those extensions can be checked, The required patch is contained in the various kernel packages in the BootProj project in my OBS home. 2. Add support for 'rootless' X: with these patches the Xserver will start without an initial root background ie. it will use whatever data is presently in the framebuffer. This feature can be enabled with the '-nr' command line option. Patches for the core server and the Intel driver already existed in the Moblin project. I ported them over to the latest version of X and fixed some bugs. The required changes are part of the X11:XOrg package and thus in Factory already. 3. Extend the displaymanager startup script to a. test for the presence of the 'copy' command, and if present copy the bootsplash image to vt7 if the displaymanager is either kdm4 or gdm. This patch is part of the xorg-x11 package and already checked into X11:XOrg (and thus Factory). 4. For kdm4 I modified the name of the background image in the SUSE theme to SUSEBackground.jpg and created a soft link from Background.jpg to that file in the same directory. [Package kdebase4-openSUSE_11.2] The kdm sysconfig script now checks for the presence of the bootsplash image, if one exists, it creates a link from Background.jpg to this image (size 800x600). Otherwise it will restore the link to SUSEBackground.jpg. It also checks for the presence of KMS (cat /proc/fb | grep -q drm) and adds the '-nr' command line option if KMS is enabled. [Package kdebase4-workspace] So far these steps have only been done for kdm4. gdm requires more enxtensive changes as it doesn't allow to configure additional command line options for the Xserver. Hi, fftw has been renamed fftw3 but it still remains in factory, the only package in factory which doesn't build without it is kalsatools which is replaced by alsamodular anyway. I've submitted updated packages, replacing the buildrequires fftw-devel with fftw3-devel to :- hugin (sr 38323), perl-PDL (sr 38321) and xmms2 (sr 38322) in anticipation. Hope your testing works better this time ;) The live cds are mostly done too, but somehow the build service does not like to start the last one of them. With almost 100 build failures, it's clearly not time for a beta though, but I'm not sure how to handle it. I was downloading a program via "zypper in bootchart" this comes after having to completely reload 11.3 M5. That came from mkinitrd not writing the MBR correctly. Bad news is that zypper script ran mkinitrd. I sure hope it works correctly. It will be no fun to reload 11.3 M5 for the third time on one machine. I removed a bunch of modules to save bandwidth. Hi, I've an old laptop with PIII and an i810 chipset. Staring with kernel 2.6.33, loading the i915.ko will blank the screen. This is on all 11.3 milestones and ubuntu lucid All screens are blank, console and X11, but remote access is fine. Hi all, zypper has undergone a major refactoring of its package selection code recently. This was mainly to enable automatic testing and to make it easier and safer to add new features. I'll submit zypper 1.4.2 including this change to Factory soon. It seems to work fine for the most part, but if you spot something that used to work for you in 1.4.1, please let us know via bugzilla. Don't forget to attach both zypper.log and solver test case [1]. The new version already enables use of unified package arguments (in install, update, and remove commands) in the form of: [+/-][repo:][type:]name[.arch][OPevr[.arch]] +/- (or ~|!) ; install/remove modifier repo = ; repo alias, number, or name type = patch|pattern|product ; if not specified 'package' isimplied name ; can even be a glob OP = -|=|>=|<=|>|< ; version operator evr = [epoch:]version[-release] ; edition (version) E.g. $ zypper in packman:xine-ui-0.99.5cvs20091115-0.pm.1.4 (don't forget to quote the args, if they contain ?/*/</> or spaces) More about all this later ... There is still some work to do to fully support this (especially don't try foo.arch :O), but the main focus now is to make sure that all that used to work before works also now. There is an error message that happens just before every Yast2 screen. Yast2 NTP complains about "Cannot update configuration policy" Yast2 Hardware Sound fails to allow setting of the volume. It just does nothing. Yast2 Hardware Joystick - just fails and dumps you in Sound Yast2 Hardware TV fails to work like predicted. Let's assume that factory is in /dev/sda9, and the production system is in /dev/sda7. Instead of booting factory, I boot the production system, which I continue using, and attempt to upgrade the factory partition from the running stable system. I do it that way because it can take 10 hours to run (slow internet), and days if it fails with repeated attempts and half upgraded system.
