[opensuse-factory] Default Security Suggestion

Hey, I was wondering if we could change the default security settings in openSUSE to have more secure /home/ directories? At minimum I think we should have chmod 700 on all users home directories. But I think also either doing user private groups (Like fedora and ubuntu, where your users default group is created specifically for your user) or setting up some default access lists could also help. [opensuse-factory] zypper download location

I've never been able to figure out where this is. Anyone know? Smart sometimes downloads half the internet, then hangs without committing. I'd like to be able to symlink the zypper cache location to the smart cache location, so that either can find whatever has already been downloaded. Maybe such a symlink would be a good system configuration option. I might be more inclined to choose zypper instead of smart if I could get zypper to leave my kernels untouched. -- "Let us not love with words or in talk only. Hi, Alpha3 was released a bit late and with quite some bugs, but it seems good enough for general testing. At least I got quite some worthy bug reports :) The upcoming weeks will be without doubt the most interesting as we're approacing feature deadline - so we'll see a rush of people integrating new features. So keep a good idea on Factory. [opensuse-factory] Problems with eclipse on 10.3

eclipse on my openSUSE 10.3 seems to have been trashed by something. Could someone post a list of eclipse modules (x84_64 and/or noarch) which should be installed using YAST? [opensuse-factory] Alpha3 on Asus A8N32SLI

When I installed Alpha3 on an Asus A8N32SLI board I noticed one oddity: I 'am using 3 harddisks attached to that board., 2 disks attached to the Nvidia CK804 SATA , one to the addtional onboard SiI 3132 controler. SUSE 10.3 recognized the disks on the CK804 as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb and the disk on the SiI 3132 as /dev/sdc, but with Alpha3 the controler order is reversed. The disk on the SiI 3132 becomes /dev/sda and the two disks on the CK804 become /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc. However the bootloader setup recognizes that /dev/sdb is the first BIOS disk in that setup and so there is no trouble with booting that installation. [opensuse-factory] Notes on 11.0 Alpha3 installation: Partitioning proposal

New installation of 11.0 a3. Update after configuration of repositories. Machine: VirtualBox running in 32 bit openSUSE 10.3 on Athlon 64. Virtual Memory: 512 MB (further:memory) Virtual Hard disk: 2x 8 GB (further:hard disk, HD) Known bug where installation stops on hard disk probe and known workaround: boot parameter 'hwprobe=-parallel,-misc.par' Installation looks super until it comes to partitioning. Case: Multiple Linux installations or partitions and no more space on hard disk. HD1 was Alpha2 installation. HD2 was valid 10.3 installation. Proposal: Delete existing and create new partitions on HD2. It would be good, if installer discovers 2 Linux installations, to ask which one should be used for installation, instead to propose something just to fill in this part of proposal. Blindly assuming may ruin user work. In this case that would happen by deleting valid 10.3 installation, instead of Alpha2. Though, reversed proposal is not good either as it is possible that I want to keep Alpha2 to check differences. Assuming that installation on second disk is not important, is not good as I can test different distros, and one on HD1 can be the one that I want to overwrite. There is more similar use cases. This can't be decided automatically and user that has 2 Linux installations and no more free space on hard disk knows which one is installation target. No one else in the world can tell that for him. Solution: Ask before you give proposal. This will help openSUSE to prevent user from accidental deletion his data. -- Regards, Rajko.
