Matthias said that if we contain the code-path in a check for the
drivername it might be acceptable for our xorg. Thats what i think is
the better idea.

Hi all,
It is a well known problem, that some desktop effects (e.g. maximizing
windows on compiz and kwin4) are unacceptably slow (take a few
SECONDS) when using the fglrx driver on ATI cards. Who is to blame
for the problem, is not entirely clear (possible candidates: kwin,
xorg, fglrx). For the time being there exists a hack/workaround/...
for the xserver, which disables background initialization. This will
result in background corruption on some drivers, on others the
corruption is not noticeable and the speed of desktop is back to
normal, leading to usable desktop effects.
Ubuntu provides a PPA containing xserver packages with this patch
applied for users of fglrx. I have created a buildservice repository
to provide them for openSUSE (at the moment only for Factory, as I am
struggling to rebuild the xorg-x11-server package on 11.2 - even
without applying any further patch).
I am not sure what the optimal policy regarding these packages could
be, because of the sideeffects of the workaround on other graphics
cards. However, desktop effects are nearly unusable for ATI users
running (having to run) fglrx, so having a repository providing these
packages which is visible to endusers would be a plus.
The perfect solution would be to put the patched xserver packages in
the ATI fglrx repository. However, I do not know if this is feasible.
