hi,
i am using a hp notebook nc8430 which has an ati mobility radeon x1600
built in.
the ati-driver 8.28.8 works.
(not as fast as expected for this card, but it works....)
but the new driver 8.29.6 doesn't work.
x stops with the error "PreInitDAL failed".
attached is the compressed Xorg.0.log file, where the error can be seen
at the bottom.
does anybody know about that error?
what can i do?

hi list,
this is a non-reproduceable bug that i found while testing 7.2-beta.
It happened when i was running 2 Xservers in parallel. The problem
vanished only after a cold restart (read: power off/on).
for people interesting in testing:
In the beginning i had to do a chmod +s xorg since my setup did not
find the new xserver (/etc/permission contained the wrong path).
It seems i had the old permission cached somewhere since the effect was
not visible first (what got me confused).
i simply started on the CLI with X :1 (and a other already running Xserver)
made a few tests, stopped and did it again what caused the error msg.

hi list,
i have installed 10.1 on a gigabyte board (GA-M55+ S3G) with build in G6100.
it works fine but today the X11-Cursor vanished.
When starting KDE you could see the jumping ball then nothing. my first guess was
that i found a KDE bug but even with fvwm2 nothing changed. only when i added
"HWCursor" "off" i got the cursor back. i could not find a single problem.
most mysterious was for me that the cursor was visible when kde started.
using google i found these thread:
www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-57747-Cannot-see-mouse-cursor-but-it-work…
is there any way to manually set the xcursor, test it somehow ?
(i did not fill a bug report because i do not see any way to reproduce it)

Honestly I didn't test it yet. Still need to figure out how to setup
my KDE desktop to use Xgl/compiz.

AFAIK Xgl itself provides the Composite extension. Therefore I don't
think Xgl/compiz would make use of the NVIDIA Render acceleration. But
I might be completely wrong. Matthias probably knows better and might
give us some more details, when he's back next week.

Well, nv/nvidia driver don't like each other. :-(

It's a pity, that it isn't usable for you yet, but just to give you an
idea for such scripts.
Uninstall 7.1:
- rpm -e $(rpm -qa|grep xorg-x11) --nodeps
- rmdir /usr/lib/X11 /usr/include/X11
- let YaST resolve the package dependancies to install again 6.9 X.Org
packages
Install 7.1:
- rpm -Uhv xorg-x11*.rpm

Stefan
