Hallo Linuxer und Xer. Ich arbeite hin und wieder von meinem Laptop aus auf meinem "Server". Ich hole mir einen XDM-Login, indem ich auf dem Laptop "X :1 vt08 -query <serverip>" eingebe. Das funktioniert wunderbar. Nun habe ich mir gedacht "warum nicht immer die Wahl unter den verfüg- baren Servern - auch dem lokalen - bekommen?". Also startet der laptop- lokale XDM selber kein Display aber init startet über "/etc/inittab" einen X-Server mittels "X :0 vt07 -indirect localhost". Das liefert mir auch brav einen Auswahl; in diesem Fall zwischen meinem Laptop und meinem Server. Wenn ich den Laptop auswähle, bekomme ich in der Tat auch dem XDM-Login und kann mich auch einloggen. Wenn ich allerdings den Server auswähle, passiert bis zum Timeout nichts, nach dessen Ablauf ich wieder die Auswahl (den chooser) präsentiert bekomme. Ein tcpdump sagt mir, dass der Laptop bis zum Ablauf des Timeout von seinem xdmcp-Port zum xdmcp-Port des Servers spricht, der aber nicht antwortet. Unmit- telbar nach Ablauf des Timeout, wenn mir wieder der chooser präsentiert wird, findet nochmal ein Dialog zwischen einem beliebigen Port meines Laptop und dem xdmcp-Port des Servers statt, der jetzt antwortet aber dieser Dialog hat - offenbar - keinen Einfluss (mehr) auf das, was geschieht. Was mache ich falsch? Was muß ich (vermutlich auf dem Server) tun, damit mir auch mein Server ein XDM-Login präsentiert? Xaccess auf Server und laptop: * #any host can get a login window * CHOOSER BROADCAST #any indirect host can get a chooser MfG Henning Hucke -- An Standart (z.B. auf einem Bein stehend) halte ich relativ wenig fuer falsch. xdmcp problem with SuSE 8.2

[I hope this is the correct list for this, if not, point me to another one please.] I want to have remote access with a SuSE 8.2 installation to the X server via xdmcp I have set up the system with YaST Control Center security option "Allow remote graphical login" (somethig like that). It did not work. I had additionally to configure YaST Control Center - Desktop - Display Manager - DISPLAYMANAGER_STARTS_XSERVER to no. This means that KDE does not start automatically on the server. This was poorly documented at http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/remotex_80.html. It _should_ be handled by this remote graphical login configuration. *I SPENT HOURS TO FIND THIS OUT* :-(. The point is, the same thing works perfectly well with United Linux 1.0, were i configured the whole thing in 15 minutes. There the KDE starts automatically AND i can log in remotely. So there must be something wrong with SuSE 8.2. Hayo Schmidt

It > did not work. Knowing exacly with option you changed could be useful to understand what's happening. I've changed the value of the variable DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS to yes using yast (System, /etc/sysconfig editor, desktop, display manager) and it works like a charm. I have the local X server running and accepting logins, and also the ability to start remote X sessions, from either true XFree servers on other computers or from VNC launched via xinetd on the server itself (configured as per SuSE 8.2 README instrucions.) The only thing I can think of is that you didn't restart kdm (using for example rcxdm restart) after you changed the option (and after the yast-launched run of SuSEconfig) > I had additionally to configure YaST Control Center - Desktop - Display > Manager - DISPLAYMANAGER_STARTS_XSERVER to no. This means that KDE does > not start automatically on the server. As I said, I had no need to set this option. Ciao, Roberto.

Verite driver on Suse

Hi, using another Linux distribution, i have problems with the Verite (fot a Diamond Stealth II S220 - 4mb). The X system don't start, and i must use the vesa driver. I'm using a xfree 4.0. I've heard that Suse have a working Verite driver in their distribution. Is that true ? Thank you everybody.

XIO: fatal IO error 0 (Success) on X server

I have a SuSE8.1 system installed with the XFree86 4.3.0 packages from SuSE for 8.1 and KDE 3.1 on top of that. 50% of the times that I run an application we wrote I get the following error: XIO: fatal IO error 0 (Success) on X server "ebony:0.0" after 14 requests (13 known processed) with 0 events remaining. then that is it and it exits. The other 50% of the time it runs perfectly. NOTE: I compiled the application using gcc3.1. If I compile it on a SuSE7.1 system with the SuSE X 4.2.0 packages and then run it on a SuSE8.1 system it works fine. Also note: this happens on all of the SuSe8.1 system I have (about 20 or so) so it can't be specific to Video card (they all have various cards). Bellow is the last lines of an strace on the application. Note: DRI is setup and working and loads just fine from the looks of the X log.
