[opensuse-wiki] AI3: QA - FlaggedRevs & Wiki Forum

Team, Rajko and I are assigned to find a solution for the FlaggedRevs/Wiki-Forum combination. I decided to post the progress of AI3 to the list as everyone interested can join the discussion at any time and help the assignees that way. Kim Groneman (Admin of the OSF) and Jon Rocker (Local Mod for the Wiki Forum and interested person in this AI3) explicitly is in CC: So what are we trying to achieve (as a background for Kim)? We'll use FlaggedRevs MediaWiki extension in combination with the Wiki Forum at forums.o.o as our QA flagship for the new (good) openSUSE wiki. FlaggedRevs provides the opportunity to flag certain articles as "Quality revision", i.e. as approved documentation while providing "Draft revisions" in parallel .. the "Quality revision" is the one shown the user by default (Drafts are accessible by clicking a link at the top right of the page). Utilizing this extension we'd like to achieve a reviewing/approval process for new articles (initially flagged as Draft) as well as major edits (flagged as draft until a wiki team member approves it and replaces the "Quality revision" with the new draft) and for that we'd like to use the Wiki forum. I hope this is clear so far? Please ask if it's not. We now have two scenarios on the table: 1. There is a brand new article created by an editor and this is flagged as draft initially. That draft revision should now have a corresponding discussion thread at the wiki forum where the community can review the article and provide feedback. Over time we hope that this process improves the article and provides the editor the opportunity to fine-tune. After some period of time, the draft gets approved (flagged as quality) and is presented as such to the reader. 2. We already have an article and some editor get started to write a new draft revision .. FlaggedRevs always automatically creates new Draft revisions of Quality articles whenever an edit occurs. This new draft is a potential candidate to replace the quality revision IF it passes the reviewing process at forums.o.o and is considered as a valid evolution by the wiki team. That said, our task now is to find out how we can "automagically" create threads in the wiki forum whenever FlaggedRevs detects a new draft (be it due to scenario 1 or 2). We doubt that simply encouraging editors to use the wiki forum as a proofreading platform wouldn't lead to expected results and thus we'd value an automatism. Jon Rocker (in CC:) came up with a rather good and simple idea yesterday on IRC and I thought about it. What about utilizing the forums RSS grabber "forumsadmin" for this? This bot does, afaik, RSS grabbing from various sources and post an abstract at "Tech News" category at the OSF. Rajko, is FlaggedRevs able to provide an RSS feed for draft revisions? Kim, is vBulletin (i.e. the RSS grabber you have) able to use this FlaggedRevs RSS feed and post corresponding threads at the Wiki forum? Some further questions IF that turns out to be possible: - May we put a wiki-template "A discussion thread has been created at <forums URL>" on top of the particular draft revision? Can this be done "automagically" and how? - How should we deal with duplicates? E.g. someone creates a brand new article, the reviewing is done, the article is flagged quality and after some time a major edit (new draft) occurs. Is there any way to just re-open the existing thread at forums.o.o instead of creating a new one (by RSS) or does this need to be done manually by wiki forum moderators? - How can we restrict the creation of discussion threads to enduser-relevant pages at the openSUSE Wiki? Is FlaggedRevs maybe able to output the RSS feed just for selected namespaces or may we hack that together (a subset of the default RSS) and provide just the drafts in interesting namespaces to "forumsadmin" RSS grabber? Lots of questions and hopefully the start of a fruitful discussion. Let's brainstorm and come up with something really awesome for the sake of the openSUSE community. Your turn gentlemen ... Kim, Rajko mentioned in the meantime that he's not sure if we can utilize RSS for this at all. Need to check this first. Question is not if we can restrict the creation of forums threads but if we can control the creation of threads by the RSS Grabber, i.e. to restrict the RSS output from MediaWiki to some Namespaces interesting for the actual enduser. Articles in the main Namespace should pass the reviewing process at forums.o.o but edits to pages like "openSUSE Marketing team page" or "Meeting logs" shouldn't be processed to forums.o.o. I think this is obvious. We just want the reviewing process for "Distro Documentation pages" and there's a lot more that gets edited in the Wiki. Thus this question is more about the abilities of MediaWiki to provide RSS rather than the ability of vBulletin to grab it. Announcement on our news server: http://news.opensuse.org/2009/12/05/update-to-opensuse-org/ came earlier then expected for the openSUSE Wiki Team, and we were thrilled with update, new hardware, etc. Of course Mediawiki software update from version 1.5 that is couple of years old to the recent 1.15 is bound to have a problems as our customizations in layout and structure doesn't work well in all details, or are not available right now. In earlier email Remy listed bugs that we are aware of and the webmaster(a)opensuse.org is notified about problems. Here is the reordered list from Remy's email with comments: 1) The namespace SBD:SBD has disappeared. No more support database .. Don't panic, the articles are in a database. It is just that SDB namespace is not configured and Mediawiki software has no idea how to access articles. Once it will be added again all articles will appear in their places. Note: Do not recreate articles on your own. Once SDB is recreated any article that will be created now will disappear with all changes that you made. The Mediawiki can handle only one title SDB:Article and that is either normal article with colon in the title, or article that belongs to namespace SDB, and colon has special meaning as namespace delimiter. Both can be in database, but only one can be presented to the web page viewer. 2) The internal relative links [[/subpage]] are now broken. Only absolute links [[page/subpage]] are allowed. The subpages is additional functionality not in default Mediawiki configuration and it doesn't work right now. 3) The <iimg></iimg> tag isn't interpreted anymore. I am not sure if there is a way to fix this, or if we should avoid using it in the future. 4)The [edit] button is now on the left, next to the title sections/subsections. It makes the headings difficult to read. - There are now 2 horizontal lines on the bottom of each page, between the Categories and the end of the articles. 5) The "Recent changes" link in the Toolbox isn't working anymore. 6) It is now impossible to upload file on the wiki with error: Internal error - The upload directory (public) is not writable by the web server. This one is server access problem, and it is up to the webmaster to solve it. 7) When user that is not logged into wiki request article from http://en.opensuse.org/ it is often served identical article from some other language wiki. Hello, Well this is just an overview about the Wiki Guidelines (from my prospective) so as to have an idea of the entire work which is to be carried out. And mind well this is an draft so changes will be there and at the same time are welcome. There are might be certain things which I forgot to mention and something similar can always be there. Hi, It seems that some of the features of the wiki were broken by the recent the MediaWiki update. Here is an attempt to list all the bugs that I've seen and that should be hopefully fixed. Feel free to add more to this list if you find some :) - The <iimg></iimg> tag isn't interpreted anymore. I am not sure if there is a way to fix this, or if we should avoid using it in the future. - The [edit] button is now on the left, next to the title sections/subsections. It makes the headings difficult to read. - There are now 2 horizontal lines on the bottom of each page, between the Categories and the end of the articles. - The internal relative links [[/subpage]] are now broken. Only absolute links [[page/subpage]] are allowed. - The ""Recent changes" link in the Toolbox isn't working anymore. Please note that this problem is also existing on opensuse-community.org, so I would be glad if someone found how to fix the problem to communicate the solution here or directly to one of the o-c.o admin (last time we check it on o-c.o we haven't found how to do it) - The namespace SBD:SBD has disappeared. Hallo Leute, auch wenn ihr hier vielleicht Englisch gewohnt seid, dennoch mal ein Posting auf deutsch weil mein Englisch nicht der Brüller ist. Ich versuche schon seit mehreren Tagen erfolglos Beiträge im Wiki ( deutschsprachige Teil des Wiki' s ) zu Editieren. Funktioniert leider nur bedingt. Was den Text betrifft ist das OK ... nur bei Bildern nicht. Diese lassen sich normal hoch laden, aber nicht in den betreffenden Beiträgen diese einfügen. Anstatt die Bilder im Text anzuzeigen, werden da nur die Links bzw die Beschriftung des Bildes gezeigt, aber das Bild selbst nicht. Ebenso fehlerhaft die Seiten Darstellung im Gast bzw Angemeldeten Nutzer Modus, da ist der Button " Bearbeiten " auf der linken Seite der betreffenden Seite anstatt auf der rechten Seiten wie es bisher war. Zusammenfassend gesagt, mit dem Wiki stimmt was nicht. [opensuse-wiki] Wiki Transition + Next Meeting

Team, as a follow-up to the thread "ATTENTION: please keep organization in mind" I posted one week ago to the list, I'd like to summarize what we have and what we need to do next. 1. Rajko did in awesome job with the evaluation of FlaggedRevs extension and his result is promising. If there are no complaints, we'll use this extension for our QA process in combination with the Wiki Forum at forums.o.o I currently take care of (see 1a). Rajko provided a showcase of FlaggedRevs at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Extension_FlaggedRevs General information is at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:FlaggedRevs 1a. I myself discussed the creation of the Wiki Forum (see 1) at forums.o.o with the Forums Team and it now should be just a matter of bureaucracy it get it live - I got great support from the Forums Team here. The current request is to press the button once we need the Wiki Forum in place. 2. Rajko, Shayon and Remy already made good progress with the wiki-templates. The result is available at http://en.opensuse.org/Template and http://en.opensuse.org/Daily_templates. We still need to think about an article-template to ensure a consistent look&feel of Tutorial pages. 3. As soon as possible I'll get started with the creation of the Guidelines. I'd appreciate any helping hand interested in contributing here. We need to explain the proper Wiki Usage, the creation of articles from a design, formulation, conception and syntax perspective. The Templates need to be linked and the QA Process (FlaggedRevs in combination with the Wiki Forum) need to be explained in detail. I'll definitely need input from Wiki Seniors to explain the one or the other aspect. 4. If there are no complaints, we'll go for Henne's 3rd approach to start with a new instance from scratch, move just the content we want while taking care of a consistent look&feel, the conformity of Tutorials with the principles defined in the Guidelines and the Content Structure Henne proposed earlier (i.e. a variant of that). Frank needs input about http://en.opensuse.org/Wiki_Team/Requested_Extensions in order to get started with the fresh instance - we certainly need FlaggedRevs as our QA flagship but please provide input about the rest in order to support Frank. 6. Once we have everything in place and the new instance up and running we need to get started with http://en.opensuse.org/Wiki_Team/Checked_Pages - select what we'd like to transfer, assure consistent design and categorize it into the new structure while utilizing the templates. So far the organizational things... That said, I'd like to schedule the next Meeting to get everyone involved on IRC to be able to discuss the Transition and steps we need to take care of in a real time conversation. In contrast to our last Meeting I'd appreciate very much to have all Wiki Seniors attending along with the Boosters, Henne and Frank. Thus I won't schedule until I got input about availability of all parties - please tell me what time during the week is most appropriate for you. I myself prefer to schedule on CET evening to assure a sufficient time for american and indian participants (Shayon) while still have a sufficient time for european participants in place. Hello Mates. Can anyone review http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Weekly_News/100. It shows that the Layout is broken. The Edit is on the left side. In the old issue we have it on the right side. And as Example Tips and Tricks we have an edit just on the Paragraphs, not on the Subparagraphs (For Desktop Users).
