[opensuse-kde3] Missing writing accents

Hello List, how can I get back the ability writing accents on my KDE3-desktop? My System is openSUSE 13.1 with KDE3 (3.5.10 release 262) from inofficial Suse-repos. I'm using the keyboard layout with dead keys. Under KDE4 all applications can work with accents. Under KDE3 there is no application writing accents. Writing accents is active (kcontrol). Anyone know what needs to be configured or installed to enable a normal user to safely remove a stick mounted via auto discovery and opened in Konq as file manager? Is it simply a matter of hal not being installed? Are there negative consequences to having hal on 13.1? Crash occurs on startup attempt whether from menu or as Gwenview plugin. :-( Do I need to file a bug? GIMP is unwieldy to do the few image manipulations I typically want to do, almost exclusively crop and/or resize. Gwenview seems like it should be able to do these things, but the manipulation I make most often seems to be missing - image cropping. Is cropping not a Gwenview feature? Does cropping have some other name in Gwenview that I don't seem to be able to recognize? Some time ago KDE3 support has been removed from openSUSE's LibreOffice packages even though it is well featured by upstream. I have built LibreOffice with KDE3 support but my commits were rejected under various pretexts.
