I have been a suser since 8.something. and i loved kde-x up to and including kde3. i tried kde4 about a dozen times or so, every single time i could not stomach more than an hour of it. I stayed with 11.1 and kde3 for the longest time, my desktop still has a fully operational partition with it, but, after i found out that i could start with a simple x setup and then add kde3, i tried suse 11.4,12.1 and 12.2 up to m3. i used 12.1 for about 6 months as the main system, but kmail stopped working for me and my digital camera could not be read and the "my computer" icon on the desktop had changed to "storage media" and a number of other smaller nuances eventually convinced me to go back to 11.4, both on the laptop and the desktop. I knew the wifi on the laptop would be a little difficult, but after half a day of trying i got the broadcom wl driver all figured out, and , thanks to wicd my wifi has been proven more reliable and more capable than any windoze or mac setup. and everything works on both the laptop and the desktop, now both with 11.4 as the main os, the *only* os on the laptop. so there is a definite divide between 12.x suse and anything previous. and kde3 seems to be less capable in anything 12.x. don't know if it is just hal, but hal is definitely a problem spot. but yesterday i did the latest kde3 upgrade on the desktop. Three *new* things came up: 1. the haldaemon was *not* started automatically. 2. The video (latest nvidia driver for the 11.4 repo) started acting up once in a while. 3. The "my computer" icon on the desktop was renamed to "storage media" , clicking on it brings up the /media folder. I was able to restart the haldaemon and it survived a reboot, but items 2 and 3 are still bugging my 11.4 desktop. I have tried again the knetworkmanager (I was using the nm-applet for some time due to memory leakage of the knetworkmanager) and found that, beside the memory leakage, which is still present (the knetworkmanager allocates more and more memory every time it connects to a network and releases it very seldom), there are some more diseases. First, it does not change the system dock icon when the network cable is unplugged. It only do it when the computer has been hibernated/resumed or after it has found a new network and tries to connect. Second, no notifications (either visual or sound) appear, as if it would not communicate events to the knotify. [opensuse-kde3] GCC-4.7 migration status

As you know, GCC-4.7 has been recently pulled to Factory. This lead to build problems in multiple packages. I already fixed the majority that has the most easy fixable errors, but there are still many packages that fail. Hello, UDisks2 support for mediamanager is almost done, but at this moment is not exactly fully usable because a severe bug in Qt3 DBus binding. More precisely, Qt3 DBus binding fail to handle signals from dbus after calling a method (in our case, mediamanager did not receive update about mounting status, after calling Mount() and Umont() methods). Ilya, In kwrite on 11.4, I configured the toolbar (Settings -> Configure Toolbar -> Main Toolbar <kwrite>) and added 'New Document' to the toolbar in this order (looking at the 'Current actions:' pane): New New Window Open... Open Recent --- line separator --- <snip> Clicking the toolbar button for New Window created a duplicate window for the current document. However - when I clicked the 'X' to close the new window, the instance of kwrite crashed. The full backtrace is attached. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

There is a problem with arts daemon (approximately since OpenSUSE 11.4; now I am using 12.1). When I set autosuspend delay to 5 seconds, some of sounds (e.g. beep when I press backspace on an empty line in xterm) disappear in five seconds after last use of any player application. When I unset autosuspend, artsd wastes about 5-7% of CPU. It seems like artsd grabs all sounds, including non-KDE ones. Does somebody know what to do? [opensuse-kde3] After last update - #manpage in konqueror tries to open in chromium?

Is there any way to convince firefox and thunderbird to use the kde3 "open with" menu instead of the windozesque file manager window? all i want is to open a file with kwrite. In the systray at my computer some icons are rescaled to the new size, but some (krusader, kpowersave) are deckled. I mean, the edges are cut off to fit an icon to the new size. Besides, it seems to be no way to control the size of icons in the system tray. (Sorry, I often mistakenly answer the author rather than to the mailing list.) On 02.05.2012 23:25, David C. [opensuse-kde3] kde3 potential gcc47 compiler code interpretation problem resulting in kwrite/kate crash

Ilya, Dominique, All, I have been troubleshooting a runtime issue in kde3 when built on gcc47 that does not get caught by the compiler, but produces a crash in kwrite at runtime when lines that wrap are encountered. This problem was not discovered until 4/25. It is being worked as http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=979 There are multiple backtraces and strace outputs included with the bug report. The crash occurs when line length in a text file causes the line to wrap within the editor window. This can be reproduced by opening kwrite and: (1) pasting 1-2 words using the select buffer until the line wraps; or (2) by opening a text file with long lines and arrowing down until the long line is encountered. This is 100% reproducible on Archlinux and effects kwrite/kate/quanta+ and text preview within konqueror file manager (anything involving katepart) On Slackware, this is limited to kwrite. Darrell Anderson reports being able to use kate without issue, but experiences the crash in kwrite and in konqueror file preview. This may not effect openSuSE, but be aware of it and test for it in your builds based on gcc 4.7. We are currently troubleshooting, this issue and if you can either confirm it in openSuSE or rule it out, that would provide another data point. Currently we have worked backwards building code from 4/25, 4/10, 4/03 and 4/1 sources. The problem remains in all builds. We have binaries from the 3/29 build that work, but no confirmation of the gcc version used in the 3/29 build. I am presently building the 3/29 sources with gcc 4.7 and if the crash occurs, that will rule out a stray patch to the code causing the issue and will implicate something going on with the compiler. I'll let you know when I confirm the 3/29 build. This is a cross-post to both factory and opensuse-kde3. So check the reply address you intend to reply to. Thanks, and I hope this doesn't affect you. Why is this rebuilt every time kdebase3 is rebuilt? What about a font could possibly change so often as kdebase3 and/or its blockers and deps change (multiple times per week, not infrequently on successive days)? And why does KDE3 need rebuilt so often anyway?
