We are not opposed to continued development of KDE 3.5 by the community, however, and would be happy to work with contributors who are interested in packaging KDE 3.5.x for future releases of openSUSE. * KDE 3.5 will not be included on 11.2 "official" media or in the release repository for 11.2, but the community certainly has the option of creating KDE 3.5 packages in the build service, and creating live CDs with KDE 3.5 packages for 11.2. * The Novell KDE team will only be addressing P1 (high priority) bugs for KDE 3.5.x from this point forward. Again, this does not preclude community contributors from supporting KDE 3.5.x, and we encourage them to do so. We'd like to thank all the people who helped provide constructive feedback while we evaluated the best course for the next release of openSUSE. While we know that no solution is guaranteed to make every user happy, we think that we've reached the best compromise for openSUSE 11.1 and beyond, to ensure a smooth transition. [opensuse-factory] Call for SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE beta testers

In the "old days" SuSE had a closed list of beta testers that would help with SuSE Linux testing and try to help SuSE ensure the best possible Linux distribution. Many beta testers expressed an interest in joining the SUSE Linux Enterprise beta program as well. We're happy to announce that we have found a way to make this possible, and we'd like to expand the beta program to include new testers as well. This week we will release the first beta of openSUSE 11.1 and begin the beta phase of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 11 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11. While the products share a code base - and therefore testing of SUSE Linux Enterprise will benefit openSUSE in general - there are differences in package selection, workflow, and setup which require each product to be tested separately. As always, we will be doing extensive testing of openSUSE 11.1 in public, but SLED and SLES will be tested in a private program. Hi All, Next package, "banner" - ASCII Art text renderer Description: Banner fills an apparent hole in Linux - that is, that is does not provide a "banner" program itself, while nearly all UNIX systems seem to do so. Banner prints a "banner" on the screen that corresponds to the first 10 characters of a string entered on the command line, in a way similar to what you might see when using Solaris or AIX. There are fancier things out there, but this is nice and simple. This package is in OBS. [opensuse-factory] Anyone with reduced midnight commander functionality

Hi, I had reduced functionality with mc while running the 2.6.27 kernel, notably f3 view, f4 edit keys not working and failure to unpack rpm and zip files while bz,tgz etc unpack. Hi everyone, I'm back in Nuremberg now. The team was pushing hard this week to get something installable out of the build system. In the end, we had something that started to install, but didn't get through, due to the new product handling, which is still causing some problems. [opensuse-factory] what goes throught BETA and what goes in STABLE

Hi, it seems like factory dependencies have some problems at the moment. Today zypper removed itself because of a missing dependency it seems. (without warning!) Earlier this week there was the pixman issue, causing Firefox any many other apps to crash. So I am wondering myself what goes into STABLE and what gets directly into factory (STABLE)? Currently Eclipse 3.4 is in BETA.[1] But shouldn't the core libraries like zypper and the X be even more tested? May I ask who is testing BETA? [opensuse-factory] The KDE way for openSUSE 11.1

Hi, as discussed in a former project meeting we should discuss how we handle KDE in openSUSE 11.1. To avoid any misunderstanding we will offer on the DVD still KDE and Gnome. It just the question which or how many KDE's ;-) The proposal of the internal team (beineri, michl, cthiel, aj, klaas, mlasars, zonker) is trying to make KDE 4.1 as good as possible and maintain our reputation to offer the best integrated KDE. Top 3 reasons for that: - KDE 4.1 is ready for prime time - clear decision and move to the future - limited ressources KDE 4.1 is released and - no doubt - much better than 4.0. But there are still discussions that KDE 4.1 lacks some capabilities KDE 3.5.x had.
