Xgl - openSUSE 10.1 beta4

I downloaded openSUSE 10.1 beta4 and all the packages for Xgl and it does not work with my Xelo FX5200 (nvidia propriatery driver works fine thoe). I followed the instructions from http://www.opensuse.org/Xgl . Here are some outputs: # compiz --replace gconf compiz: No composite extension munja:~ # rpm -q compiz compiz-0.0.2-3 # gnome-window-decorator gnome-window-decorator, Failed to load shadow images When I rebooted machine, X wouldn't start. I got the following output: xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.3884 dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/xorg/modules/xgl/libglx.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Fatal server error: No GLX modules loaded dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/xorg/modules/xgl/libglx.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory FatalError re-entered, aborting No GLX modules loaded /usr/X11R6/bin/xinit: Server error. --------------------------------------- I had glx in my xorg.conf enabled. When I removed xgl rpm packages, X started successfully. If it's possible to make Xgl work on my hardware, any help would be highly appreciated :) Thanks. Cheers! -- Igor Jagec

Network-Manager Offline Mode

YaST trying to install ppc.rpm on x86

I opened up YaST Software Management to install pwgen. It complained that it failed to install pwgen...ppc.rpm I have a honest x86_32. What made YaST think that it should have anything to do with ppc? I hesitate to file a bug because the Software Management is still quite broken. I'll try specifically the same thing in beta5.

Ping Kurt Garloff: non-GPL Kernel Modules, some good news?

I raised this point at the IRC Meeting last night and was asked if I could take it to the open-factory list and ask Kurt Garloff if he has any information on this subject. What is required: We need some "positive spin" on the situation. Is it possible to have an update on this change, giving some information on which commercial partners are supporting this change and actively working to produce userspace binaries or OSS drivers? Obviously if some of the work is done under NDA's information will be limited, but information on the number of suppliers actively working on solutions and some key names if possible (like nVidia, ATi, Intel etc.) would be helpful and quell a lot of the speculation that is currently going on in the lists. What is *NOT* required: More flaming, bad mouthing or generally spreading FUD! We already have had 2-3 discussions on the negative side of the change. Please do not add this thread to the list, if you have something generally negative to say about the change, please use the existing threads. Background: The removal of the binary Kernel modules has, so far, been poorly communicated to end-users. There is little or no information forthcoming on how this will directly affect end users and what alternatives are being put in place to mitigate the change. On the negative side, we have had people like the AVM developers in the press and coming onto the list, raising more doubt and uncertainty by stating this is forcing them to abandon development/support for Linux drivers - this although there are several alternatives available, including open-sourcing parts of the driver and/or moving to userspace for the binary only drivers/parts that can't be open sourced. The problem is, users are used to installing SUSE Linux and ending up with a working system with little or no work required (E.g. checking a button during the initial YOU update to enable dual-head and 3D support on their nVidia cards, and NIC's and modems working from the get-go so that they can download updates, patches and any additional drivers) and they want re-assurances that they will be able to continue to upgrade to newer versions of SUSE Linux and their PC's will still work... Software Remover

The Software Remover (System -> Configuration -> Remove Software) shows me the installed packages, but after selecting a package for removal and klicking on "Remove", the package ist still there. Software Remover said: The transaction was succesfull. With Beta 4, I have the problem that the Installation Sources section of YAST doesn't remember the sources I enter. After initial install, the list of sources is empty (not even the install CD is listed). If I enter the CD, Factory and other sources, clicking on the Finish button "erases" them, and looking at sources again shows that there are none. Going into Software Management, I can then, obviously, only delete installed packages, as SM cannot find any additional packages. This is frustrating as I can't update to factory or otherwise search for new packages without manually downloading and installing the individual packages. Is there a temporary workaround, i.e. can I directly edit a configuration file to add the sources so that I can use the software manager to install packages? (and if so, which file?) Has this been addressed in Factory/Beta 5 and would I be better to wait until I download the delta ISO's for B5? Dave -- "I got to go figure," the tenant said. "We all got to figure. Stupid bug, but with great potential: kmix

I'd like to point out a lame bug that has good chances of being overseen and making it alive in the final release. This would cause a great deal of traffic on suse-linux-e, with the same question asked all over again by frustrated users. kmix is not working in first login after installation. It has a red "disabled" sign. Users will think their soundcard was not detected and attempt reinstallation and all sorts of fixing. Second login, or after restart, kmix is working but is muted (!). Unmutting it still won't be enough to produce sound because the sliders for headphones and PCM are at 0. I can only imagine the kilometers of thread about not being able to play shit, no sound, no mp3, SUSE sucks etc. So, please, please, nice and pretty please fix this :-) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=144525 Ugh, could anyone confirm the bug? Or is it only for my particular hardware (i915)? It has been manifesting since beta1, I think.
