OSTree is using /usr/etc to store data for their three-way-diff-merge
of configuration files.
On *BSD, users have to edit the files in /usr/etc, while in our case,
this should be "read-only", and user have to create the changes in /etc.
There are distributions who did the "UsrMerge" by moving /etc to
/usr/etc and makeing /etc a symlink to /usr

In general I fully agree, but if people from other distributions tell me,
they would not be able to follow us for this reasons, then /usr/etc is
for me a no-go. It doesn't make sense to create something, which only
openSUSE will do and everybody else is not able to do.

What would happen if we choose /usr/etc and other distributions cannot
follow us?
1. we are the only one who are doing, and will always be different
2. The others will come up with another standard, and either we are
alone/different, or have to do the work a second time.
I don't like any of this options.

Hi,
looks like when upgrading to latest TW (in my case from 20190521) the command
line in Dolphin (using F4 to open) shows only
bash-5.0$
instead of
user@machine:$PATH >
Anyone to confirm this behaviour?

Today we have distro-supplied defaults below /usr/lib and the local changes
for this apps in /etc.

Depends on how this app reads the configuration files.

Like all the applications who are doing this today already? And there are
many. Only look in /usr/lib for all this configuration files nobody ever
finds ...

Nobody ever noticed this with all the apps doing this already today.

Nobody ever noticed this with all the apps doing this already today.

You would be right if we would introduce something new. But as you
can read in my document, many apps are doing this already today,
including systemd, PAM, sysctl, module loading and many, many more.
There are also libraries which do this more or less transparent for
the app.
In many cases, we only need to make use of it.
And: this will come. The systemd people want this, too, and are creating
bug reports to upstream projects that they should change their code.
So the only question is: do we want that this happens in a chaotic way,
and people have to search in 200 places for the configuration files, as
every application uses it's own solution, or do we want to drive this in
a more consistent and planned way?

[opensuse-factory] Clementine build is broken on tumbleweed - very high mem usage with visualizer turned on
by Manvendra Bhangui 28 Jul '19

Something is broken with the clementine builds for openSUSE. This
wasn't the case around 6 months ago. There are basically two problems.
1. High memory consumption during normal operations
2. Extremely high memory consumtion the moment you turn the visualizer
on. The memory usage keeps on increasing, till the machine runs out of
swap space and becomes unusable. The load shoots up and the machine
becomes unresponsive. I just cannot listen to music more than 5
minutes, after which the machine hangs
NOTE: Even without the visualizer turned on, the memory (RSS) keeps on
increasing every few minutes, but it is still manageable. Without the
visualizer I can listen to the music for hours without the machine
going into hang state.
Other players like strawberry based on clementine doesn't have this
issue, but strawberry doesn't have visualizations. Also the same
version of clementine has no issues on FC30 or Ubuntu. Since my
computer running openSUSE tumbleweed is my primary entertainment box,
I did the following.
1. Copied clementine from FC30 as clementineO. Modified the clementine
launcher to run /usr/bin/clementineO instead of /usr/bin/clementine
2. Did ldd on the clementineO to find out missing shared libraries.
Copied those shared library from FC30 to lib64 subdirectory in my home
folder and softlinked the missing libraries in /usr/lib64 to the
libraries in my home folder subdirectory. I take care not to update
any existing library with that from FC30
3. The clementine executable copied like this has no issue.
4. For the past few months, I have been updating clementine by copying
it from my FC30 machine. I thought this issue will get solved with
future updates, but it looks like I'm the only user facing this
problem.
I had an old backup of openSUSE tumbleweed VERSION_ID="20181022".
Followed the same method as I did above and I find the old clementine
not having this issue. Another interesting fact is that till yesterday
the VIRT field in top used to display around 20 terrabytes memory.
But after today's update to VERSION="20190723", the VIRT field looks
normal, But the memory leak continues.
Here are some details I captured using ldd and top. There is big
difference in the memory consumption and the linked qt libraries are
very different between the current clementine build and the clementine
build on FC30 or the older clementine executable from last year. Where
do I report this issue / How can I help to fix this issue?

[opensuse-factory] Multiple ACL dependent packages broken after latest TW snapshot
by Bjoern Voigt 27 Jul '19
by Bjoern Voigt 27 Jul '19
27 Jul '19
Yesterday I installed the latest huge TW 20190713 snapshot update. I had to
update more than 7000 packages with "zypper dup"
Immediately after installing the update, multiple commands started to crash,
e.g. rpm, cp, getfacl, vim and others.
Rebooting did not fixed the problem. Several programs already crash on
booting.
In /var/lib/systemd/coredump/ I found core dumps for smbd, system-journal,
system-udevd.
"dmesg" shows "Bad RIP value" messages. E.g.
[12662.324058] systemd-journal[18780]: segfault at 0 ip 0000000000000000
sp 00007ffd64331e28 error 14 in systemd-journald[561ebb49c000+6000]
[12662.324063] Code: Bad RIP value.
I tried to debug the root cause. I started with the simple commands. The
seem to crash, if ACL functions are used. E.g.
# cp /etc/motd /tmp/
[...OK...]
# cp -p /etc/motd /tmp/
cp: overwrite '/tmp/motd'? y
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
# getfacl /
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
GDB shows, that the programs crash if the access the ACL function
acl_get_file. For instance getfacl and Samba crash here:
# gdb /usr/bin/getfacl
[...]
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[...]
I could solve the "getfacl" issue by recompiling and installing the "acl"
packages (acl, libacl1, libacl-devel). Unfortunately this does not fix the
problems of cp, smbd, vim etc.
I found the LTO discussion here. Could this be the root cause?
Greetings,
Björn

[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed - Review of the week 2019/30
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 26 Jul '19
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 26 Jul '19
26 Jul '19
Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers
During week 2019/30, I tried to slow down the check-in cadence a little
bit, in order to allow the ARM build system to catch up. Especially the
full rebuild with LTO enabled caused a much higher load on the ARM
workers than would be normal. And I am happy to announce that on the
morning of July 26, an ARM-based snapshot made it to QA. Usually, I
don't talk about architectures, and 'just' focus on x86_64, but there
was some team effort to also bring aarch64 back into shape.
As for the 'regular' x86_64 Tumbleweed snapshots, there were 4 of them
released during this week: 0718, 0721, 0723 and 0724, containing those
updates:
* gcc 9.1.1, with some more LTO-specific fixes
* dracut 049
* Linux kernel 5.2.1
* Mozilla Firefox 68.0.1
* squid 4.8
What can you expect to come your way in the next days/weeks?
* KDE Frameworks 5.60.0
* KDE Plasma 5.16.3
* Addition of "-Werror=return-type" to CFLAGS for all builds
* Almost two months worth of YaST changes/fixes/updates
* Mesa 19.1.3
Cheers,
Dominique

==== libcontainers-common ====
- Update to libpod v1.4.4
- Fixed a bug where rootless Podman would attempt to use the
entire root configuration if no rootless configuration was
present for the user, breaking rootless Podman for new
installations
- Fixed a bug where rootless Podman's pause process would block
SIGTERM, preventing graceful system shutdown and hanging until
the system's init send SIGKILL
- Fixed a bug where running Podman as root with sudo -E would not
work after running rootless Podman at least once
- Fixed a bug where options for tmpfs volumes added with the
- -tmpfs flag were being ignored
- Fixed a bug where images with no layers could not properly be
displayed and removed by Podman
- Fixed a bug where locks were not properly freed on failure to
create a container or pod
- Podman now has greatly improved support for containers using
multiple OCI runtimes. Containers now remember if they were
created with a different runtime using --runtime and will
always use that runtime
- The cached and delegated options for volume mounts are now
allowed for Docker compatability (#3340)
- The podman diff command now supports the --latest flag
- Fixed a bug where podman cp on a single file would create a
directory at the target and place the file in it (#3384)
- Fixed a bug where podman inspect --format '{{.Mounts}}' would
print a hexadecimal address instead of a container's mounts
- Fixed a bug where rootless Podman would not add an entry to
container's /etc/hosts files for their own hostname (#3405)
- Fixed a bug where podman ps --sync would segfault (#3411)
- Fixed a bug where podman generate kube would produce an invalid
ports configuration (#3408)
- Podman now performs much better on systems with heavy I/O load
- The --cgroup-manager flag to podman now shows the correct
default setting in help if the default was overridden by
libpod.conf
- For backwards compatability, setting --log-driver=json-file in
podman run is now supported as an alias for
- -log-driver=k8s-file. This is considered deprecated, and
json-file will be moved to a new implementation in the future
([#3363](https://github.com/containers/libpod/issues/3363))
- Podman's default libpod.conf file now allows the crun OCI
runtime to be used if it is installed
- Fixed a bug where Podman could not run containers using an
older version of Systemd as init (#3295)
- Updated vendored Buildah to v1.9.0 to resolve a critical bug
with Dockerfile RUN instructions
- The error message for running podman kill on containers that
are not running has been improved
- The Podman remote client can now log to a file if syslog is not
available
- The MacOS dmg file is experimental, use at your own risk.
- The podman exec command now sets its error code differently
based on whether the container does not exist, and the command
in the container does not exist
- The podman inspect command on containers now outputs Mounts
JSON that matches that of docker inspect, only including
user-specified volumes and differentiating bind mounts and
named volumes
- The podman inspect command now reports the path to a
container's OCI spec with the OCIConfigPath key (only included
when the container is initialized or running)
- The podman run --mount command now supports the
bind-nonrecursive option for bind mounts (#3314)
- Fixed a bug where podman play kube would fail to create
containers due to an unspecified log driver
- Fixed a bug where Podman would fail to build with musl libc
(#3284)
- Fixed a bug where rootless Podman using slirp4netns networking
in an environment with no nameservers on the host other than
localhost would result in nonfunctional networking (#3277)
- Fixed a bug where podman import would not properly set
environment variables, discarding their values and retaining
only keys
- Fixed a bug where Podman would fail to run when built with
Apparmor support but run on systems without the Apparmor kernel
module loaded (#3331)
- Remote Podman will now default the username it uses to log in
to remote systems to the username of the current user
- Podman now uses JSON logging with OCI runtimes that support it,
allowing for better error reporting
- Updated vendored Buildah to v1.8.4
- Updated vendored containers/image to v2.0
- Update to image v2.0.0
- Add registry mirror support
- Include missing man pages (bsc#1139526)
- Update to storage v1.12.10
- Add support for UID as well as UserName in /etc/subuid files.
- utils: fix check for missing conf file
- compression: add support for the zstd algorithm
- overlay: cache the results of
supported/using-metacopy/use-naive-diff feature tests

==== rubygem-cri ====
Version update (2.15.5 -> 2.15.9)
- updated to version 2.15.9
see installed NEWS.md
[#]# 2.15.9
Fixes:
* Fixed bug which could cause options from one command appear in other commands (#101, #102)
[#]# 2.15.8
Fixes:
* Don?t explicitly set default values for options (#99)
This release reverts a backwards-incompatible change introduced in 2.15.7.
To illustrate this, compare the behavior of the following command in recent versions of Cri:
```ruby
option :f, :force, 'use force', argument: :forbidden
run do |opts, args, cmd|
puts "Options = #{opts.inspect}"
puts "Force? #{opts[:force]}"
puts "Option given? #{opts.key?(:force)}"
end
```
In Cri 2.15.6, the default is not set in the options hash, so the value is `nil` and `#key?` returns false:
```sh
% ./run
Options = {}
Force? nil
Option given? false
```
This behavior was inconsistent with what was documented: flag options were (and still are) documented to default to `false` rather than `nil`.
In Cri 2.15.7, the default value is `false`, and explicitly set in the options hash (`#key?` returns `true`):
```sh
% ./run
Options = {:force=>false}
Force? false
Option given? true
```
This change made it impossible to detect options that were not explicitly specified, because the behavior of `#key?` also changed.
In Cri 2.15.8, the default value is also `false` (as in 2.15.7), but not explicitly set in the options hash (`#key?` returns `false`, as in 2.15.6):
```sh
% ./run
Options = {}
Force? false
Option given? false
```
This backwards-incompatible change was not intentional. To fix issue #94, a change in behavior was needed, but this change also affected other, previously-undefined behavior. The new behavior in 2.15.8 should fix the bug fixed in 2.15.7 (#94, #96), without causing the problems introduced in that version.
[#]# 2.15.7
Fixes:
* Options with a forbidden argument now default to false, rather than nil (#94, #96)
[#]# 2.15.6
Fixes:
* Fixed problem with help header not being shown if the summary is missing (#93)
