Hi,
there seems to be a bigger move to change all cron controlled services
to systemd-timers:
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1115430
I have a few questions left while I'm working on updating a package for it:
1. for which distributions should such a change happen?
Just Factory or also 15.1?
2. should the package contain any hints/outputs when this changes?
If yes, how?
3. if the package was already installing the cron job directly with
installation is it expected that the corresponding service and timer
is requested to be added to the defaults or should it stay with the
user (who probably does not expect that he needs to do something; see
2.?)
Thanks,
Wolfgang

(bsc#1073313)
==== openssh ====
Version update (7.8p1 -> 7.9p1)
Subpackages: openssh-helpers
- Fix build with openssl < 1.1.0
* add openssh-openssl-1_0_0-compatibility.patch
- openssh-7.7p1-audit.patch: fix sshd fatal error in
mm_answer_keyverify: buffer error: incomplete message [bnc#1114008]
- Version update to 7.9p1
* ssh(1), sshd(8): the setting of the new CASignatureAlgorithms
option (see below) bans the use of DSA keys as certificate
authorities.
* sshd(8): the authentication success/failure log message has
changed format slightly. It now includes the certificate
fingerprint (previously it included only key ID and CA key
fingerprint).
* ssh(1), sshd(8): allow most port numbers to be specified using
service names from getservbyname(3) (typically /etc/services).
* sshd(8): support signalling sessions via the SSH protocol.
A limited subset of signals is supported and only for login or
command sessions (i.e. not subsystems) that were not subject to
a forced command via authorized_keys or sshd_config. bz#1424
* ssh(1): support "ssh -Q sig" to list supported signature options.
Also "ssh -Q help" to show the full set of supported queries.
* ssh(1), sshd(8): add a CASignatureAlgorithms option for the
client and server configs to allow control over which signature
formats are allowed for CAs to sign certificates. For example,
this allows banning CAs that sign certificates using the RSA-SHA1
signature algorithm.
* sshd(8), ssh-keygen(1): allow key revocation lists (KRLs) to
revoke keys specified by SHA256 hash.
* ssh-keygen(1): allow creation of key revocation lists directly
from base64-encoded SHA256 fingerprints. This supports revoking
keys using only the information contained in sshd(8)
authentication log messages.
- Removed obsolete configuration option --with-tcp-wrappers, and
- -with-opensc for s390 and s390x.
- Removed patch merged upstream

* openssh-7.7p1-seccomp_ipc_flock.patch
* openssh-7.7p1-cavstest-ctr.patch

- Mention upstream bugs on multiple local patches
- Adjust service to not spam restart and reload only on fails
- Update openssh-7.7p1-sftp_force_permissions.patch from the
upstream bug, and mention the bug in the spec
- Drop patch openssh-7.7p1-allow_root_password_login.patch
* There is no reason to set less secure default value, if
users need the behaviour they can still set it up themselves
- Drop patch openssh-7.7p1-blocksigalrm.patch
* We had a bug way in past about this but it was never reproduced
or even confirmed in the ticket, thus rather drop the patch

- add fix-cve201819387.patch fixes CVE-2018-19387 boo#1116887
==== valgrind ====
Version update (3.13.0 -> 3.14.0)
- update valgrind.xen.patch to branch bug390553-20181125-ddfc274b2
- build against Toolchain module for SLE12
- add 0001-Bug-397187-s390x-Add-vector-register-support-for-vgd.patch
0001-Bug-400490-s390x-Fix-register-allocation-for-VRs-vs-.patch,
0001-Bug-400491-s390x-Sign-extend-immediate-operand-of-LO.patch,
0001-s390x-more-fixes.patch,
Implement-emulated-system-registers.-Fixes-392146.patch (FATE#326355)
- enable check (poo#36751)
- update to 3.14.0 (bsc#1114575, FATE#326355):
see http://www.valgrind.org/docs/manual/dist.news.html
* The new option --keep-debuginfo=no|yes (default no) can be used to retain
debug info for unloaded code. This allows saved stack traces (e.g. for
memory leaks) to include file/line info for code that has been dlclose'd (or
similar). See the user manual for more information and known limitations.
* Ability to specify suppressions based on source file name and line number.
* Majorly overhauled register allocator. No end-user changes, but the JIT
generates code a bit more quickly now.
* Preliminary support for macOS 10.13 has been added.
* mips: support for MIPS32/MIPS64 Revision 6 has been added.
* mips: support for MIPS SIMD architecture (MSA) has been added.
* mips: support for MIPS N32 ABI has been added.
* s390: partial support for vector instructions (integer and string) has been
added.
* Helgrind: Addition of a flag
- -delta-stacktrace=no|yes [yes on linux amd64/x86]
which specifies how full history stack traces should be computed.
Setting this to =yes can speed up Helgrind by 25% when using
- -history-level=full.
* Memcheck: reduced false positive rate for optimised code created by Clang 6
/ LLVM 6 on x86, amd64 and arm64. In particular, Memcheck analyses code
blocks more carefully to determine where it can avoid expensive definedness
checks without loss of precision. This is controlled by the flag
- -expensive-definedness-checks=no|auto|yes [auto].
* Valgrind is now buildable with link-time optimisation (LTO). A new
configure option --enable-lto=yes allows building Valgrind with LTO. If the
toolchain supports it, this produces a smaller/faster Valgrind (up to 10%).
Note that if you are doing Valgrind development, --enable-lto=yes massively
slows down the build process.
- remove epoll-wait-fix.patch,
Fix-access-to-time-base-register-to-return-64-bits.patch,
0001-Accept-read-only-PT_LOAD-segments-and-.rodata.patch (upstream),
==== virt-manager ====
Subpackages: virt-install virt-manager-common
- bsc#1116990 - [virt-install] internal error: libxenlight failed
to create new domain 'sles-11-sp4-64-pv-def-net'. Fix reversed
logic when testing for i386.
virtinst-use-xenpae-kernel-for-32bit.patch
==== wayland ====
Subpackages: libwayland-client0 libwayland-cursor0 libwayland-egl1 libwayland-server0
- Downgrades do not work in SLES service packs, because the SP0
repo remains enabled for SP1. (This is unlike Leap, where a 15.1
system will have no 15.0 directories.) As such, to force the
upgrade from Mesa:libwayland-egl1 to wayland:libwayland-egl1,
the number in wayland is bumped to >18 for those distros.
==== yast2-apparmor ====
Version update (4.1.0 -> 4.1.1)
- Provide icon with module (boo#1109310)
- Added license file to spec.

- this bug is fixed since 4.0.14 (3.2.47)
==== yast2-nfs-server ====
Version update (4.0.1 -> 4.0.2)
Subpackages: yast2-nfs-common
- Use the real name for nfs-server service instead an alias
(bsc#1116779).
- 4.0.2
- Added license file to spec.
- Switched license in spec file from SPDX2 to SPDX3 format.

particular line of the generated CIL module). The tmp directory will
be deleted upon the next transaction, so no manual removal is needed.
* When overriding PREFIX, BINDIR, SBINDIR, SHLIBDIR, LIBEXECDIR, etc.,
DESTDIR has to be removed from the definition. For example on Arch
Linux, SBINDIR="${pkgdir}/usr/bin" was changed to SBINDIR="/usr/bin".

[opensuse-factory] Heads-Up: New Partitioning & firewall/sshd defaults on the way
by Richard Brown 29 Nov '18
by Richard Brown 29 Nov '18
29 Nov '18
Hi everyone,
For a while there has been a significant amount of feedback that some
of our installers defaults could do with improvement. I've decided to
try and tackle some of them.
We have seen a number of users receiving smaller / (rootfs)
filesystems than ideal with our default feature set of snapshots and
rollback.
This results in their systems filling up with snapshots before the
space-aware cleanup even has a chance to take effect.
A number of users have asked why we mix xfs and btrfs by default, and
we've seen bugs where that mixing results in a /home partition that is
unusably small.
Therefore I've proposed the following PR to both Leap 15.1 and
Tumbleweed's installers
https://github.com/yast/skelcd-control-openSUSE/pull/153
The changes from the current behaviour as follows:
- / will aim to be at least 40GiB by default, and will not be allowed
to be smaller than 20GiB
- If snapshots are disabled in either the Guided or Expert
partitioner, / will aim to be at least 10GiB, and will not be allowed
to be smaller than 5GiB
- / will try and use all other available space
- By default we will NOT propose a separate /home partition
- If a separate /home is requested in either the Guided or Expert
partitioner, /home will aim to be at least 40GiB and no smaller than
10GiB
- If enabled, /home will try to use all other available space at a
rate twice as large as /
- swap will not grow to the size of RAM by default (but this can still
be enabled in the Guided or Expert partitioners)
- Unlike previously, all of the above also applies to the
"Transactional Server" system role, with the exception that you cannot
disable snapshots.
All together this means that most users will have a much simpler
straightforward partitioning of their systems, be it a VM with a small
disk, a laptop with an SSD, or a massive server/workstation with
dozens of GB of RAM.
In addition to the above I took the opportunity to fix a bug that's
been lingering in my backlog for most of the year:
https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1090372
As we now have clear "Server" and "Transactional Server" system roles,
the firewall & sshd configuration for those roles will now be
optimised by default
- sshd will be enabled by default
- firewalld will be disabled by default
I've discussed logic of disabling the firewall was discussed at length
with a number of people, especially our Leap release manager Ludwig
who's opinion on security I consider very highly.
Given that servers are not general purpose machines and will have a
limited number of services installed, each manually by the user, we
feel that the firewall is a needless complication for that role which
users should be saved from by default.
The firewall & sshd configuration will not be changed for any of the
other system roles. The firewall will remain enabled by default for
desktop roles, where there is a much larger risk of software opening
up ports without the user being aware of it.
Users will of course still be able to modify these settings from their
defaults on the "Installation Summary" screen before the install, just
as they can today.
If there are any significant improvements you see to the above, please
speak up quickly as the pull request is on the way already.
Regards,
Richard

[opensuse-factory] problem in building/installing pcp: requires postfix? and can't be used with sendmail?
by L A Walsh 28 Nov '18
by L A Walsh 28 Nov '18
28 Nov '18
Seems like to install or build pcp on tumbleweed, it wants
postfix which conflicts with my installed sendmail.
Why would a run-time status gathering daemon care about what
mail daemon you are running?
Is this an oversight or bug or what?
thanks...

YaST development keeps rolling. Check the latest report at
https://lizards.opensuse.org/2018/11/20/yast-sprint-67/
with a lot of information about new features in the installer, like:
- More options to configure Kubic during installation.
- Several improvements in the storage proposal.
- Easing the network configuration and the usage of online
repositories in openSUSE.
- Improving installation in text mode for CJK and other languages.
- Configuring SSH access during installation and in a running system.
- And many other small fixes here and there!
Cheers.

HI!
I've prepared an update for cyrus-sasl 2.1.27 and tested it locally:
https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/649912
Ralf Haferkamp ist listed as only maintainer of cyrus-sasl.
But I doubt that he's still involved in this topic.
How to find more maintainers for this package?
Ciao, Michael.

Problem: Trying to boot Opensuse installation media on a laptop results in a
black screen with a non blinking cursor on the left top edge.
I think that this problem is caused by an incompatility between Opensuses
grub.efi and the UEFI/BIOS of that laptop due to the following reasons:
1. All versions of Opensuses Installation media I've tried ( openSUSE-
Leap-15.0-DVD-x86_64, openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-x86_64-
Snapshot20181107,openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-x86_64-Snapshot20181122, openSUSE-
Leap-15.1-DVD-x86_64-Build352.1) show that problem. But they boot on other
systems.
2. Other linux installation/live media like Fedora-Workstation-Live-
x86_64-29-1.2, manjaro-kde-18.0-stable-x86_64,ubuntu-18.10-desktop-amd64.
don't have a problem to boot on that system.
3. The UEFI of that system allows to specify a path to an EFI executable to be
booted. If I replace the default bootx64.efi with grub.efi I get the described
problem , if I choose mokmanager.efi, the UI of mokmanager is started.
4. If I replace the grub.efi on the Opensuse installation media with grubx64.efi
( renamed to grub.efi) from the fedora installation system , I'am able to boot
and to run the installation. But, as you can expect, the installed grub also
shows the problem . And in this case replacing grub.efi with the fedora one
results in a complaint about missing symbols.
Howto get more information about the problem to be able to write a useful
bugreport ? Is there a debugger or strace/ltrace like tool for EFI
executables ?

==== xapian-core ====
Version update (1.4.7 -> 1.4.9)
- Update to 1.4.9:
* API:
+ Document::add_posting(): Fix bugs with the change in 1.4.8 to more
efficiently handle insertion of a batch of extra positions in ascending
order. These could lead to missing positions and corrupted encoded
positional data.
* remote backend:
+ Avoid hang if remote connection shutdown fails by not waiting for the
connection to close in this situation. Seems to fix occasional hangs seen on
macOS. Patch from Germn M. Bravo.
- Update to 1.4.8:
* API:
+ QueryParser,TermGenerator: Add new stemming mode STEM_SOME_FULL_POS.
This stores positional information for both stemmed and unstemmed terms,
allowing NEAR and ADJ to work with stemmed terms. The extra positional
information is likely to take up a significant amount of extra disk space so
the default STEM_SOME is likely to be a better choice for most users.
+ Database::check(): Fetch and decompress the document data to catch problems
with the splitting of large data into multiple entries, corruption of the
compressed data, etc. Also check that empty document data isn't explicitly
stored for glass.
+ Fix an incorrect type being used for term positions in the TermGenerator API.
These were Xapian::termcount but should be Xapian::termpos. Both are
typedefs for the same 32-bit unsigned integer type by default (almost always
"unsigned int") so this change is entirely compatible, except that if you
were configuring 1.4.7 or earlier with --enable-64bit-termcount you need to
also use the new --enable-64bit-termpos configure option with 1.4.8 and up or
rebuild your applications. This change was necessary to make
- -enable-64bit-termpos actually useful.
+ Add Document::remove_postings() method which removes all postings in a
specified term position range much more efficiently than by calling
remove_posting() repeatedly. It returns the number of postings removed.
+ Fix bugs with handling term positions >= 0x80000000. Reported by Gaurav
Arora.
+ Document::add_posting(): More efficiently handle insertion of a batch of
extra positions in ascending order.
+ Query: Simplify OP_SYNONYM with single OP_WILDCARD subquery by converting to
OP_WILDCARD with combiner OP_SYNONYM, which means such cases can take
advantage of the new matcher optimisation in this release to avoid needing
document length for OP_WILDCARD with combiner OP_SYNONYM.
* testsuite:
+ Catch and report std::exception from the test harness itself.
+ apitest: Drop special case for not storing doc length in testcase postlist5 -
all backends have stored document lengths for a long time.
+ test_harness: Create directories in a race-free way.
* matcher:
+ Avoid needing document length for an OP_WILDCARD with combiner OP_SYNONYM.
We know that we can't get any duplicate terms in the expansion of a wildcard
so the sum of the wdf from them can't possibly exceed the document length.
+ OP_SYNONYM: No longer tries to initialise weights for its subquery, which
should reduce the time taken to set up a large wildcard query.
+ OP_SYNONYM: Fix frequency estimates when OP_SYNONYM is used with a
subquery containing OP_XOR or OP_MAX - in such cases the frequency
estimates for the first subquery of the OP_XOR/OP_MAX were used for
all its subqueries. Also the estimated collection frequency is
now rounded to the nearest integer rather than always being rounded
down.
* glass backend:
+ Revert change made in 1.4.6:
Enable glass's "open_nearby_postlist" optimisation (which especially helps
large wildcard queries) for writable databases without any uncommitted
changes as well.
The amended check isn't conservative enough as there may be postlist changes
in the inverter while the table is unmodified. This breaks testcase
T150-tagging.sh in notmuch's testsuite, reported by David Bremner.
+ When indexing a document without any terms we now avoid some unnecessary work
when storing its termlist.
* build system:
+ New --enable-64bit-termpos configure option which makes Xapian::termpos a
64-bit type and enables support for storing 64-bit termpos values in the
glass backend in an upwardly compatible way. Few people will actually want
to index documents more than 4 billion words long, but the extra numbering
space can be helpful if you want to use term positions in "interesting" ways.
+ Hook up configure --disable-sse/--enable-sse=sse options for MSVC.
+ Fix configure probes for builtin functions for clang. We need to specify the
argument types for each builtin since otherwise AC_CHECK_DECLS tries to
compile code which just tries to take a pointer to the builtin function
causing clang to give an error saying that's not allowed. If the argument
types are specified then AC_CHECK_DECLS tries to compile a call to the
builtin function instead.
* documentation:
+ Fix documentation comment typo.
* tools:
+ xapian-delve: Test for all docs empty using get_total_length() which is
slightly simpler internally than get_avlength(), and avoids an exact floating
point equality check.
* examples:
+ quest: Support --weight=coord.
+ xapian-pos: New tool to show term position info to help debugging when using
positional information in more complex ways.
* portability:
+ Fix undefined behaviour from C++ ODR violation due to using the same name
two different non-static inline functions. It seems that with current GCC
versions the desired function always ends up being used, but with current
clang the other function is sometimes used, resulting in database corruption
when using value slots in docid 16384 or higher with the default glass
backend. Patch from Germn M. Bravo.
+ Suppress alignment cast warning on sparc Linux. The pointer being cast is to
a record returned by getdirentries(), so it should be suitable aligned.
+ Drop special handling for Compaq C++. We never actually achieved a working
build using it, and I can find no evidence that this compiler still exists,
let alone that it was updated for C++11 which we now require.
+ Create new database directories in race-free way.
+ Avoid throwing and handling an exception in replace_document() when
adding a document with a specified docid which is <= last_docid but currently
unused.
+ Use our portable code for handling UUIDs on all platforms, and only use
platform-specific code for generating a new UUID. This fixes a bug with
converting UUIDs to and from string representation on FreeBSD, NetBSD and
OpenBSD on little-endian platforms which resulted in reversed byte order in
the first three components, so the same database would report a different
UUID on these platforms compared to other platforms. With this fix, the
UUIDs of existing databases will appear to change on these platforms
(except in rare "palindronic" cases). Reported by Germn M. Bravo.
+ Fix to build with a C++17 compiler. Previously we used a "byte" type
internally which clashed with "std::byte" in source files which use
"using namespace std;". Fixes #768, reported by Laurent Stacul.
+ Adjust apitest testcase stubdb2 to allow for NetBSD oddity: NetBSD's
getaddrinfo() in IPv4 mode seems to resolve ::1 to an IPv4 address on the
local network.
+ Avoid timer_create() on OpenBSD and NetBSD. On OpenBSD it always fails with
ENOSYS (and there's no prototype in the libc headers), while on NetBSD it
seems to work, but the timer never seems to fire, so it's useless to us (see
[#770]).
+ Use SOCK_NONBLOCK if available to avoid a call to fcntl(). It's supported by
at least Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD.
+ Use O_NOINHERIT for O_CLOEXEC on Windows. This flag has essentially the same
effect, and it's common in other codebases to do this.
+ On AIX O_CLOEXEC may be a 64-bit constant which won't fit in an int. To
workaround this stupidity we now call the non-standard open64x() instead
of open() when the flags don't fit in an int.
+ Add functions to add/multiply with overflow check. These are implemented
with compiler builtins or equivalent where possible, so the overflow check
will typically just require a check of the processor's overflow or carry
flag.

[opensuse-factory] ntpd stop script hanging since conversion to systemd unit
by Achim Gratz 23 Nov '18

The handling of ntpd apparently switched from an old-style rc script to
a systemd unit. Since then the stop script will take somewhere between
ten seconds to a minute to declare success and continue with the
shutdown. I don't see why it should take that long to shut down since
ntpd really just closes the ntp logs and exits. The systemd unit file
treats it as a forking daemon, which probably makes the check of whether
the daemon has exited more involved. But ntpd can easily be told not to
fork, so I think it should use the "-n" option in ExecStart and all the
stuff that the current start script is doing should go into
ExecStartPre?
Regards,
Achim.
