[opensuse-factory] enabling ntpd or chrony by default?

Hello, on a recent Tumbleweed installation (new install on 2018-10-04) with the KDE default pattern, both ntpd and chrony get installed - but none of them get enabled by default :-( The (obvious) result is that the clock runs out of sync. Before I open a bugreport - what's the expected behaviour on a fresh installation? Hello, Until today I was using the famous "namrac repository" in order to obtain a better font rendering in my system, but today I noticed that such repository is not available anymore on download page. By googling a bit I understood that now freetype2 is relying on a newer environment "...Harmony LCD Subpixel Rendering technique in freetype2 version 2.8.1 and above..." Hence I have disabled the "namrac repository" and added the Tumbleweed M17 one: "https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/" and updated libfreetype6 and libfreetype6-32bit. But I would like to know if in addition I have to configure something on my homedir in order to get the best font rendering with these new versions. I mean something as setting up the variable "FREETYPE_PROPERTIES=" and keep using or delete the file suggested for previous truetype rendering as ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf. Two workarounds have been implemented in this patch: (1) When calling lvcreate, include the `-Zn` option to disable the automatic zeroing of the header of the newly created LV device; doing so requires that the LV device's /dev entry exists immediately after it has been created, but in a chroot'd environment udev isn't going to be running to automatically populate /dev/<vg_name>/<lv_name> or /dev/mapper/<vg_name>-<lv_name>. This should be safe to do since the LV is being created within a loopback device based partition, which is backed by a zero filled file, created by qemu-img. (2) After creating an LV we need to run `vgscan --mknodes` to create the required device nodes under /dev, which won't be automatically created since udev isn't running in the chroot'd environment. Unit tests updated to account for additional `-Zn` arguments that are being passed to `lvcreate` and for additional call that is being made to `vgscan --mknodes`. Hi, The Linux-Hardware.org database has been divided recently into a set of databases, one per each Linux distro. The one for openSUSE is available at: https://linux-hardware.org/?d=openSUSE Everyone can contribute to the database with the help of https://github.com/linuxhw/hw-probe. The tool is intended to simplify collecting of logs necessary for investigating hardware related problems. Just ask a user to run one simple command to collect all the system logs at once: sudo hw-probe -all -upload Hardware failures are highlighted in the collected logs (smartctl, dmesg, xorg.log). Also it's handy to search for particular hardware configurations in the community and review logs for errors to check operability of devices on board (for some devices this is done automatically — see statuses of devices in a probe). Hi, openSUSE has a package that provides desktop environments with /etc/xdg/menus and /usr/share/desktop-directories required by former, called desktop-data-openSUSE. However, many desktop environments like XFCE (with libgarcon-data) and Gnome (with gnome-menus), provide menus and desktop-directories already. Meanwhile libgarcon also depends on desktop-data-openSUSE, which in that case makes no sense, because it's useless in XFCE anyway. Well, kinda useless, as it also provides KDM settings, a bunch of icons used by YaST (which I hope won't be used soon enough, working on that), yet YaST in no way depends on that package (???). openSUSE has around 130 categories in there, which makes updating that package and icons related to that package a nightmare in the long run. It also makes it so much harder to navigate menus in desktop environments, having to go through 3 submenus to get to anything useful. To say the least, it's a mess, but it doesn't end there. One of the files from that package is used for OBS's brp checks, the .desktop file category check. That has been truly annoying to some folks, who tried to package apps with categories listed by fd.o's standard (which was updated in 2016, yet desktop-directories remained untouched), but weren't able to due to lack of full compatibility with standard. How to fix it? I got an idea which will make dealing with categories, new version of standard and menus so much easier. fd.o's standard consists of 2 distinct parts, Main categories [1] and Additional categories [2]. Instead of having menus consist of Main categories > Sub categories, we should have just Main categories. They require less maintance, less icons, less translations and standard around them is updated less frequently. OBS's brp check should have a list of categories and subcategories, based on which it determines if it should shout at packager. And not XML, because that makes it harder to edit and read that file. If file was in a human readable format (which XML certainly isn't) we could also get rid of wiki page that explains what categories are allowed, and instead reference the file itself.
