[opensuse-factory] zypper trying to replace installed package bat with alsabat on dup

I just installed bat which is basically like cat, but with syntax highlighting and such. When I run zypper dup, zypper wants to replace bat with alsabat. alsabat has absolutely nothing to do with bat lol... completley different functions. Hello, I would like a package "compsize" to be include in opensuse repo. https://github.com/kilobyte/compsize >From README.md compsize takes a list of files (given as arguments) on a btrfs filesystem and measures used compression types and effective compression ratio. I think this is useful when transferring files, because one can estimate how large the file will be after decompressing to check if the drive will have enough space for example. Hi Since the last snapshot, kmail crashes on exit via File/Quit. Anyone else have this issue? I reported it via the bug handler. Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers, Again we managed to publish two snapshots during this week: 1012 and 1015; 1011 stayed too long in openQA to be released and 1017 was discarded. While trying to fix a bug, where Mozilla Firefox is only published as x86_64 package in the repo, but not 32bit variant is present, we ‘shot over the ; andt, and ended up with only the 32bit version. As we did not want to change architecture for all users just as a side effect of an error, that snapshot was discarded. So, the two snapshots that DID get published brought you those changes: * GStreamer 1.14.4 * Mozilla Thunderbird 60.2.1 * KDE Applications 18.08.2 * Linux kernel 4.18.13 * gpgme 1.12.0 * go 1.11.1 And Stagings are busily molding these updates into usable updates: * GNOME 3.30 (likely to ship next week, but with GDM 3.28.x as we faced issues with autologin with the 3.30 branch) * KDE Frameworks 5.51.0 * glibc 2.28, Python 3.7, openssl 1.1.1: the three all interdepend on each other and cause a bunch of new failures – See Staging:C * LLVM 7 * Even more recent Linux kernels * Mesa 18.2.x (VLC crashes need to be investigated) Cheers, Dominique

[opensuse-factory] Can no longer access pipe on cli

Hi Not sure when this started but i no longer have access to the pipe symbol. It only gives me ¬ or ` now. I've got a basic logitech K120 keyboard (104 keys) and its worked fine until now. I checked the konsol profile was still using the default keyboard bindings - it was still the same. I checked systemsettings5/Input Devices config and that was still set to the Generic 104 key layout model. I then checked systemsettings5/Regional Setting/Languages and that was empty so i added Brit English. I'm not sure when this changed to blank as i always change everything regional related when the user is created or soon after if any regional issues occur. I then checked systemsettings5/Regional Setting/Formats to make sure they were all correct and it correctly had UK British English (en_gb) for "Region". But if i toggle the "Detailed Settings" to Off, the "Time" short format changes and the "Measurement Units" change from Metric to Imperial. There is something i don't understand about changing the "measurement units", if you drop the box of options you get all the countries plus "no change" and "Default" - why is it not just "Metric" or "Imperial"? the only way i can get metric is to select "no change". In making a tool, I got libtool: error: cannot find the library '/usr/lib64/../lib64/libstdc++.la' or unhandled argument '/usr/lib64/../lib64/libstdc++.la' So I went to look for it. I can't find it in tumbleweed. Compression performance plots are often done with something like the Silesia corpus. Linux distributions have rather different proportions of file types, I think. They have a lot of machine code, and even more data files, and probably not so much text and images. Since our data set is also 2.8 orders of magnitude bigger, rerunning a compression shootout will give more detail. So I did just that. http://paste.opensuse.org/15790105 http://inai.de/files/openSUSE-compression.ods (My measurements included just *.x86_64.rpm + *.noarch.rpm.) The takeaway from that is: * xz outperforms zstd in the regions that xz caters to. But overall, xz forms the far end of the "law of diminishing returns". * Moving openSUSE from xz-5 to xz-2 saves 50% of time for an investment of just 3.2 GB of space. Or, moving to zstd-7, saving 85% for ~6.1 GB. Other observations: * There are steps in compressor behavior, and that penalizes a lot of levels, leaving only a few sensible ones: zstd-2-3-7-12, xz-1-2-3-4-5-9 (disregarding memory use, which is another factor). * Some of our packages are too fat. kicad-packages takes longer to compress than the entire remaining distro at zstd-19 with 16x-parallelism. In other words, a sufficiently parallelized system may have to wait just for that one to complete. Looks unmaintained. Not sure, as current release seems undated on website, but prev release (29) was from 2011. Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers, This week, only two snapshots have been published (1004 and 1009); 1008 would have been good too, but it stayed too long in testing and was overtaken by OBS building 1009 a bit faster than openQA could test it. Well, more updates in one snapshot, but nothing lost. Hi! I installed openSUSE Leap 15.0 today to set up a headless server. Since, by default, the system has a strict firewall configuration through IP tables such that an OpenSSH server won't work, I wanted to configure the firewall using YaST from the command line. When trying to open the YaST firewall module, I am greeted by an error message: ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ Error │ │ YaST currently does not have a module for configuring firewall. Please, │ │ either use "firewall-config" to configure your firewall via a user interface │ │ or "firewall-cmd" for the command line. │ │ │ │ [OK] │ └──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ Unfortunately, the package "firewall-cmd" doesn't exist. Installing "firewall-config", on the other hand, would pull in lots of GtK dependencies which I would like to avoid. Is the missing "firewall-cmd" package intentional? Hi, while talking about systray issues, there is another bug that hits me just again: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=378011 I have to manage a few mailing lists, they are defined as groups in Kontact address book. KMail is not properly resolving these groups, the address always ends up as mygroup@the_domain_set_in_KMail. When I create a small goup with just three entries it works, if I save a list of recipients (26 entries) as group and use the group name in the 'to' field it fails. Can it be depending on the number of recipients? Some years ago there was a bug that mailing lists with more than 87 entries failed reproducible. That was fixed more by chance than be purpose. I am fighting to build a LiDAR file access library on OBS. Aside from the general build issues, I get an error for a couple (but not all) repositories: openSUSE_Leap_15.0 and openSUSE_Leap_42.3. This is the error message: The repository setup is broken, build or publish not possible. I cannot see what it is unhappy about and there are no more details provided that I can see. [opensuse-factory] Proposal to remove pyc/pyo from Python on TW

Hi, As you know the Python packages are collecting the pyc/pyo precompiled binaries inside the RPM. This is mostly a good idea, as makes the first execution of the Python code faster, as is skipped the stage where the interpreter compile the .py code. But this also makes the Python stack a bit fat. Most of the time this is not a problem, but things are changing. We have JeOS and MicroOS, both minimal images (build with different goals and technology) that search for be small and slim. But we want to include a bit of Python in there, like salt-minion or cloud-init. And now the relative size of Python is evident. For Python 2.7 and 3.7 is possible to remove the pyc code from the system and instruct the interpreter to avoid the recreation of the pyc once the code is executed. The Python interpreter, by default, will compile and store the pyc in the disk for each `import`, but this behavior can be disable when we call Python. But this will make the initial execution of a big Python stack a bit slow, as the pyc needs to be recreated in memory for each invocation. The slowness can be relevant in some situations, so is better to not enable this feature. But in Python 3.8 there is a new feature in place, bpo-33499, that will recognize a new env variable (PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX) that will change the place where __pycache__ is stored [2]. I backported this feature to 3.7 and create a JeOS image that includes salt-minion. I created an small shim that replace the python3.7 binary to enable this cache prefix feature, to point it to /var/ cache/pycache/<username>, and I removed from the image all the python compiled code. I decided salt-minion as saltsack is a relevant Python codebase. I needed to port to 3.7 150 python libraries to create the first PoC. The PoC works properly locally. I have yet some bits that I need to publish in the repo, but the general idea seems to work OK. I can also publish the gain on size for the ISO with the patch and without the patch, to have more data to compare. I also estimated some gains for different scenarios. For example in a normal TW installation: * Python 2.7 + 3.6 - pyc/pyc: 127M total - py: 109M total * Python 3.6 only - pyc/pyc: 91M total - py: 70M total Python pyc/pyo size is more than the py code size, so we can potentially half the size of the Python 3 stack. Maybe for a normal TW installation the absolute gain is not much (91M). But for other scenarios can be relevant, like in OpenStack Cloud, where the size of the Python code is big. I made some calculations based on all the different OpenStack services: * Python 2.7 OpenStack services - pyc/pyo: 1.2G total - py: 804M total Saving 1.2G each node is a more important number. So, my proposal is to remove the pyc from the Python 3 packages and enable the cache layer on Tumbleweed since Python 3.7. I do not know if do that by default or under certain configurations, as I am not sure how to that feature optional. Any ideas? Any suggestions? What do you think if I follow this path? Some ideas that I have are add a new %pycache-clean macro that will remove the __pycache__ from the RPM, add a new rpmlint check to make sure that there are not pyc for a python3 package, update the wiki and update the py2pack code to generate good python3 spec files for openSUSE. [opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed systray not configurable?

Does anyone else see this? If I configure the systray by unchecking software updates on the general tab and marking notifications "shown" on the entries tab, then clicking on any icon is treated as if I clicked on the triangle icon, i.e., it shows hidden entries instead of showing details for the icon clicked on.
