[opensuse-factory] What is new on 13.2?

Hi people of Factory I am prepairing an article about 13.2 beta release so I would like to know what is new and what changed since 13.1, please share. I am interested in everything, expecialy in changes that has ben made in the GUI's, server, extra/improved tools, new programs that people will get in the standard 13.2 beta installation and any extra stuff, anything that you guys worked in the last year and believe is important for people to know. Hi again, i see very high i/o waiting while the problem happens (~90%), and i think its this Problem https://lwn.net/Articles/572911/, after setting vm.dirty_background_ratio = 1 (default 10) vm.dirty_ratio = 5 (default 20) the problem does not occour, and the i/o wait is only about ~50%. [opensuse-factory] Questions regarding design choices in beta 1.

I wanted to get started on a 'sneak peek' article and had some questions. 1) In order to add a wifi connection, one must give administrative access. Is this a design choice (security choice that chased Linus away) or is this a bug? 2)YaST Installer is freakishly fast. Is this entirely due to switching to Ruby? Both the loading of each 'page' of the installer as well as the actual installation process is many factors faster than it was ever before. 3)The boot process is way faster than before. Previously my computer would slow when it was getting ready to launch Gnome. Now it often doesn't have time to display the splash before the desktop has loaded. Does this have to do with having graphical sessions handled by systemd? If you can elaborate on why it's so much faster that would be great. 4)Btrfs & XFS is a really odd choice for default filesystems. I can understand using btrfs for root (though I'd like to hear your reasoning) but I don't understand why home is XFS as opposed to also being btrfs or even ext4. Very curious design choices. 5)Are we not shipping with Geeko branded art this release? Is the art being used upstream? [opensuse-factory] Introduce btrfsmaintenance package to Factory

Hi, let me introduce a new package that supplements the btrfs filesystem and aims to automate a few maintenance tasks. This means the scrub, balance, trim or defragmentation. The package comes from SLE12 where btrfs is going to be the default filesystem as well. Each of the tasks can be turned on/off and configured independently. The default config values were selected to fit the default installation profile. * scrub - go through all medatada/data and verify the checksums, default period is one month * balance - the balance command can do a lot of things, in general moves data around in big chunks, here we use it to reclaim back the space of the underused chunks so it can be allocated again according to current needs The point is to prevent some corner cases where it's not possible to eg. allocate new metadata chunks because the whole device space is reserved for all the chunks, although the total space occupied is smaller and the allocation should succeed. * trim - run TRIM on the filesystem using the 'fstrim' utility, makes sense for SSD devices. * defrag - run defrag on configured directories. This is for convenience and not necessary. There's a separate defragmentation task that happens automatically and defragments only the RPM database files in /var/lib/rpm. This is done via a zypper plugin and the defrag pass triggers at the end of the installation. This improves reading the RPM databases later, but the installation process fragments the files very quickly so it's not likely to bring a significant speedup here. Cron takes care of periodic execution of the scripts, but they can be run any time directly from /usr/share/btrfs/maintenance/, respecting the configured values in /etc/sysconfig/btrfsmaintenance. If the period is changed manually, the cron symlinks have to be refreshed, use "systemctl restart btrfsmaintenance-refresh" (or the "rcbtrfsmaintenance-refresh" shortcut). Changing the period via yast2 sysconfig editor triggers the refresh automatically. The project lives in obs://filesystems/btrfsmaintenance and I'm going to submit it to Factory. I'd like to ask volunteers to give it some testing. Feedback is welcome. [opensuse-factory] Experiences installing factory on my new Acer laptop E15 E5-511

Obviously this system comes with Windows 8.1, which I did not want to drop and with EFI, if that's the right term. My intention was to leave 50 GB to Windows and use the rest for openSUSE. I used a USB stick with Beta1 to do the initial installation. I changed the BIOS to start from a USB stick. The first problem was that I could not make a connection using WiFi. It complains that the packages iw and wpa_supplicant are not installed and apparently these packages are not on the USB stick (in the iso-file). So I started without a network connection and accepted the offer to leave about 150 GB to Windows and to a Windows restore system. The boot system on the USB stick does not offer the possibility to boot from the real hard disk. So after the installation I had to remove the USB stick before I could boot Linux. But first I had to change the BIOS to first try to boot from USB, second from the disk and a third possibility from the Windows Boot Manager. So at first I ended up in Windows. Maybe I did exit Windows too early, I don't recall to have seen a warning. After that I started a new installation removing all the Linux partitions and tried to shrink the main Windows partition down to the 50 GB like I wanted. I got a warning that the file system on it, NTFS, was corrupt. So I went back to Windows and had to restore Windows 8.1 completely, using the restore system. I could have chosen to leave any user data intact. During some exploration of Windows I found a feature to shrink the main windows partition so I made it 50 GB. My next installation removed all earlier Linux partitions and I managed to make the partitioning like I wanted it to be. Two 20 GB system partitions with Brtfs and two 20 GB home partitions with XFS for two versions of openSUSE next to each other. Next to that I have a large partition with XFS where users have their permanent data which is not OS version dependent. In the users home folders symbolic links are used to access this data. I got a warning about subvolumes not being correct, but I did not understand the meaning. Later I found out this was about the home folder being a subvolume on a Btrfs partition and also a folder on its own partition. The concept of subvolumes is new to me and now I realize you need to know about it to do a proper partitioning of your disk. Finally I got a system to boot. All goes well till I have the KDE splash screen showing the first of 5 icons on it. After that the screen blanks. After some time the background picture of the KDE desktop is shown, but when I touch a key on the keyboard or move the mouse, the screen blanks again. I tried also running KDE Live, but I got the same behavior. So it seems my graphics card, an Intel HD Graphics is not properly supported. Any suggestions? -- fr.gr.
