[opensuse-factory] Problem with Plymouth- or openSUSE-theme on Optimus system?

Hi, I'm running a nvidia optimus system (Sandy Bridge and nvidia Geforce GT 550M). On 12.1 I had the following behaviour: On Boot the splash first was shown stretched in the resolution of the vga kernel parameter (1280x1024). After a few seconds the resolution switches to the correct resolution (1920x1080), I think at that moment KMS is enabled on the intel card (?) Now I've upgraded to 12.2 RC, and after this resoultion switch I have just a black screen until X starts. Does plymouth not repaint after this situation? If I remove the vga parameter I get a blue progress bar instead of the openSUSE splash, but this repaints after the resolution switch. Should I report this in bugzilla? Hi all, While debugging https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=617751 I ran across an issue with our bundle-lang-<x>-<y> packages and the way python gettext work. In order for bundle-lang-<x>-<y> not to conflict with <package>-lang, the bundle moves the files to /usr/share/locale-bundle (as opposed to /usr/share/locale, which is the default location). For C - Programs, this seems to be all fine, and a bundle-lang being installed helps translating the program. As the above bug indicates, this did not work for system-config-printer (I can reproduce with other python apps as well, e.g gnome-tweak-tools). The issue lies in python's gettext, where you can either pass a localedir to gettext.bindtextdomain, or you can omit it (which defaults, you guess, to sys.prefix/share/locale) Now, I see several options to tackle such an issue: - Do not add -lang files of python apps to bundle-lang-<x>-<y> packages - Do not move files to /usr/share/locale-bundle - Fix pythons gettext The last one is surely most appealing, but I'm not sure who can implement it in what time-frame. First ones both have their issues, but would likely be simple to implement. So, what are your ideas and/or proposals? [opensuse-factory] Thermal issues with kernel 3.4 (64bits)

Hi, I just wanted to check if I am the only one that has thermal issues with the 3.4 kernel ? I see the following behavior : 1) Load the notebook with a gcc acitivity until all processors are 100% load 2) Shortly after you get notifications that a thermal event is reached (CPU's > 100 degrees) 3) Kernel reacts and shutdown the system. Strangely enough the same task with an 3.3 kernel can easily survive and also under Windows I do not have any problems. Checking bugs.kernel.org I found something with regards to this effect and they suggested to load the thermal module with nocrt=1 so that the activity on the first trippoint is not initiated. This indeed helps a lot and it seems that even with a high load the notebook doesn't get that hot. Also no shutdown is initiated. I also tried kernel 3.5 from Kernel:HEAD and this one has the same effect with the temperature. However using the nocrt=1 option, I get a different undesired effect. Once the temperature gets to a certain point, the kernel lowers the speed of the CPU's to the lowest point. Once the CPU's are cool'ed down, this maximum speed should be increased again. With kernel 3.4 this works as indicated. With kernel 3.5 however this maximum speed is not changed anymore until a reboot. Hi! At $dayjob we do a lot of embedded Linux. So I need cross compilers for many archs. I'm wondering why openSUSE does not offer packages for common cross toolchains like arm or ppc. There are icecream backends, so why are there no other packages to use the compilers without icecc? Hi list, I would like to point out, that package containing Croscore fonts (namely serif: Tinos, sans-serif: Arimo, monospace: Cousine) was created in M17N:fonts. These fonts are metric compatible with Liberation fonts and in turn with Microsoft, AMT etc. fonts. (As such are subject to add to /etc/fonts/conf.d/30-metric-aliases.conf in future fontconfig versions.) I would appreciate you test them out. You need nothing more then install them from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N:/fonts/ and add to your ~/.fonts.conf: <fontconfig> <alias> <family>serif</family> <prefer><family>Tinos</family></prefer> </alias> <alias> <family>sans-serif</family> <prefer><family>Arimo</family></prefer> </alias> <alias> <family>monospace</family> <prefer><family>Cousine</family></prefer> </alias> </fontconfig> You can see them then applications/websites using generic names serif, sans-serif and monospace. You can also play with hinting setup and report the best back. For example, it seems to me on my monitor and firefox, that, for Cousine (monospace) font, when for hintstyle=hintfull * BCI is used (autohint=false), 'm' is blured and unreadable in smaller sizes * autohint is used, when varying fontsize, dot inside '0' (zero) is not always in center of the ellipse. Nevertheless I have leave autohint with hintfull for this monospace font enabled and am satisfied with it. For Tinos and Arimo I am using ChromeOs setting (hintfull with BCI) and also am satisfied with it so far. This setting is in .fonts.conf attached, so feel free to save it in your ~ as starting point. Already in openSUSE 12.1 the fam service does not work. This remains the same in 12.2. The family of courier packages depends on this service. The alternative is to use dovecot, which does not need the fam service. So I propose to drop the family of courier and fam packages from the openSUSE distribution. -- fr.gr. [opensuse-factory] Force disable LVDS Downclock on intel graphics?

Hello, I am running Tumbleweed off openSUSE 12.1. In the past i used "i915.lvds_downclock=1" as a power saving measure on my laptop, but realised that it caused annoying screen flickering and made it impossible to use an external display. So i disabled this option and have had a functioning laptop since then. However since i ran zypper dup last week and updated the kernel to 3.4.6-34, this display instability has returned. When i plug in an external monitor via HDMI (or VGA) i can sometimes use it for a couple of minutes before the graphics card starts switching the output between displays and flickering, rendering it impossible to use. It is often worse if i only use the external display (i.e. disable laptop display). I suspect this is due to some kernel change which has allowed the lvds downclock power saving measure to work (i.e. without being forced). Can anyone confirm this? Also can i force disabling this option by entering in "i915.lvds_downclock=0" at the kernel line? [opensuse-factory] Proof was asked for -- and is given. open-suse build process needs 'improvement'

The maintainer of suse's perl port, I take it, just made it back from a break, and responded to my bug filed against 12.1 not being able to build perl 5.14.2 (as distributed by rpm in binary and source rpms from opensuse.org). At first it got closed out as invalid, because they didn't try it. Then they tried it. Comments in the bug which was reopened and resolved as 'fixed', now... ------ Note that I needed to backport one of the upstream fixes to make perl-5.14.2 build, check out perl-cbuilder-ccflags.diff. It's already included in perl-5.16.0, though. We also patch hints/linux.pl a bit (it seems to be tailored for Debian). But if you do everything our specfile does, you shouldn't have any problems to rebuild perl. If you want to compiler 5.16.0 for 12.1, you should check out the patches and specfile from opensuse 12.2. --- Of course my fault was using the the specfile from 12.1 to build the perl5.14.2 that is the current perl with 12.1. You may not like the idea of retrying your build with a complete, clean suse development installation -- but that you don't even retry the build with the currently released tools seems like an even larger gap in standard QA practices -- and I worked both with and in QA for years in my career, so I know of what I speak -- and I know the bar for what is acceptable quality has constantly been getting pushed lower and lower. I'm saying the bar is too low if you can't even regen the product with the released product. The case with samba is that you can't build samba with all of it's options installed, nor can you build it if you want to build the smb using tools like gvfs.smb or fuser.smb -- they both require packages that, if installed, will keep the smb package from building. istgt is a user-space iSCSI target, providing SCSI command descriptor block handling for file and device backed logical units. A list of features and tested initiators can be found on the project website at: http://www.peach.ne.jp/archives/istgt/ It is currently maintained upstream for FreeBSD by Daisuke Aoyama and the FreeNAS team. Additionally, it is carried by Debian and NetBSD. A Factory devel project has been created at devel:openSUSE:Factory. I'd like to submit to openSUSE:Factory in the coming days, providing there are no objections from the community.
