[opensuse-factory] acpid requires systemd?

Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. I created a merge request for desktop-data three weeks ago. It's just a minor patch that doesn't really fix anything but a warning from kbuildsycoca4. I'm not sure about how Gitorious works, maintainers are supposed to notice the "1" in the merge requests section or they receive an email notifying it? And since I'm on it. Since I updated my 11.3 system to KDE to 4.5 the "inline" part of the menu is not honored... Expected behavior? [opensuse-factory] consolidating the list of mysql flavors in Factory

Hi, at the moment we seem to have the following mysql flavors in Factory: mysql-community-server mysql-cluster mariadb There might be more that I don't know about. Given that mysql is a package that needs frequent updating (both for security and for non-security bugfix reasons); I was wondering if it really makes sense to have multiple flavors of it in Factory (and thereby in openSUSE 12.1). We did so in the past for 11.3 and 11.4, and noticed that this was a problem (security updates took look to be submitted, and then they had major regressions that broke severly). So, my question is twofold: - is there anyone stepping up to maintain mariadb and mysql-cluster for the full openSUSE lifetime? - if no, who would object (and why) to dropping those variants from factory? Note that the other flavors can still be in server:database, even built for older distros, so those who really want it can use it. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all - Since technically we're in feature freeze for 11.4, I thought I'd put this out for discussion. Factory is currently using 2.6.36 which was released 3 weeks ago. Upstream versions tend to take about 10-11 weeks, on average, to release. The scheduled release for the first openSUSE RC is Jan 20. The scheduled release for the first RC is Jan 20. The typical development time for a kernel release, on average, is about 10-11 weeks. That puts the release of 2.6.37 around Dec 29 to Jan 12. That sounds like kind of a tight window, but the reality is that the differences in the later kernel RCs tend to be small and fix bugs. The "real" development happens in -rc1, which was released about two weeks ago. Later -rcs serve to stabilize the development that went into -rc1. So, the the feature freeze aspect of it will be a one-shot, when I update to -rc1. (Actually, I hardly ever update to -rc1 and instead use - -rc2 which tends to be more stable). I've already done the merge work for 2.6.37-rc1 since the master kernel always tracks the latest upstream. Xen is the lone exception, as it usually is, but Jan Beulich has been great about getting that completed shortly after I do the update. This time might be a little more difficult because much of the Xen code has been merged into the mainline kernel so there's some sorting out to be done. As far as testing goes, we're still early enough that we won't lose a lot of effort. I'd update Factory to 2.6.37-rc2 as soon as it is released upstream, which should be this week. Our usual corps of dedicated testers can dig in quickly. In my experience, though, the number of testers drastically increases around the RC1 release. I wish it weren't so, but it is. So revving the kernel now isn't likely to toss out a lot of testing. The biggest "feature" I'm going for is not having to backport fixes from 2.6.37. The BKL removal patches and the VFS scalability patches are going to improve performance on multicore systems. The removal of I/O barriers should also be pretty noticeable but I haven't had time to verify that yet. I wonder whether our IPv6 settings are the right ones after reading the following article (sorry, German only): http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/IPv6-Smartphones-gefaehrden-Privatsp… which references: http://www.heise.de/netze/hotline/IPv6-anonym-1100727.html We set use_tempaddr to 0 by default (disabling privacy extensions) and set it to 1 if enabled. The article advises to use 2. Background: By default (value 0) my IPv6 address will be derived from my hardware (macaddr) and therefore be the same independend how I connect to the internet. So, it's easy to track my computer... So, my proposal is to do the following two changes: * Use 2 instead of 1 in /etc/rc.d/boot.ipconfig for enabling the privacy extensions * Set IPV6_PRIVACY=yes in /etc/sysconfig/sysctl Any concerns with this change? Btw. here's an Ubuntu bugreport: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/procps/+bug/176125 and Windows (since XP) is doing it the same way on desktops. Hi, xorg-x11-server in Factory is still at 1.9.3 release ; however latest stable release is in 1.10.x branch.... As feature freeze is 2 weeks away, and as an xorg update is not trivial, does that mean that openSUSE 12.1 will keep a 11 months old xorg server in november ? I'm encountering issue with obsolete GL_PROTO extension when trying to compile Mesa from master because of that. Hello, I plan to submit PostfixAdmin to Factory. One of its dependencies is the Zend Framework, which requires some more packages. I'd like to ask the maintainers of these packages to submit them to Factory ;-) The dependency tree looks like this: php5-ZendFramework php5-APC php5-pear-phpunit php5-pear-channel-phpunit php5-pear-phpunit-DbUnit php5-pear-phpunit-File_Iterator php5-pear-phpunit-Object_Freezer php5-pecl-memcache @maintainers of these packages: can you please submit them from server:php:extensions and :applications to Factory? (If everything else fails, I can try to maintain them in Factory, however my knownledge of these packages isn't as good as it should be.) Notes: - php5-pear-phpunit requires several php5-pear-* packages, which means the SR will have to wait until those were accepted - php5-ZendFramework submission needs to wait until everything else was accepted Thanks in advance for your help! BTW: My temporary project home:cboltz:zend-framework (with a QA package that BuildRequires all the above packages to check if they are installable) might be interesting (it shows that the above list is complete). home:cboltz:prepare-factory can serve as a status monitor to show which packages are still missing in factory. Hi: I would like to propose replacing (not removing) the default command line tools for compression, specifically "gzip" for "pigz" and "bzip2" for pbzip2. These tools are backward compatible and have dramatically better performance because they do compression in parallel utilizing current multiple CPU machines. Possible paths to do this a) Simple adding "update-alternatives" support to all the mentioned tools and let the user to decide, however we install pigz and pbzip2 by default. I do not endorse this way. b) Building pigz with executable name "gzip" and rename gzip to gnu-gzip, and bzip2 to bzip2.old or something similar. This is the way endorse c) As these tools are more frecuently used with "tar", make it to prefer the parralel versions, current gnu-tar already tries different implementations when the default ones are not present, would be a matter of altering the order if needed. However, with FACTORY, I can't, as there is only 3.0.0 (and Kernel:HEAD's 3.1.rc3 is crashing like hell all the time). Even Tumbleweed has a newer Kernel than FACTORY. Hello I managed to install VMware-Workstation-7.1.4-385536.i386.bundle on openSUSE 12.1 so I thought that I would share it here in a "How To" form. Maybe, it was never announced here, or I missed the announcement, I just want to let you know that you now can submit Release Notes entries with openFATE (https://features.opensuse.org/) Just open a feature that is "done" for 12.1, and from the "Edit Feature" box select "Add release notes". Then fill in the text and click "Preview Release Notes" and "Save Feature". Approx. once a week I'll export these notes to the true release notes docuemnt. Problem: According to openFATE, there are just 3 features done for 12.1. Hi. Due to a bug zypper-1.6.2 per default creates repositories with gpgchecks disabled. This is fixed in zypper-1.6.15. FYI, most SUSE employees - including myself - have changed their emailaddresses which they use in openFATE and bugzilla from @novell.com to @suse.com. Btw. I still read emails on all accounts, this change is just for adding anybody manually to an openFATE request or bugzilla report. A sidenote: For lizards and news.opensuse.org, the emailaddress is the key for authentification. Hello, I have just submitted PostfixAdmin to Factory (SR 79976). PostfixAdmin is a PHP based application that handles Postfix Style Virtual Domains and Users that are stored in MySQL or PostgreSQL. Postfix Admin supports: - Virtual Mailboxes / Virtual Aliases / Forwarders - Alias domains (Domain to Domain forwarding with recipient validation) - Vacation (auto-response) for Virtual Mailboxes. - Quota / Alias & Mailbox limits per domain. - Fetchmail integration - Packaged with over 25 languages. The security track looks quite good. The only real security problem was a SQL injection that was only exploitable by a super-admin (who has all permissions anyway, so exploiting it wouldn't have made sense ;-) (this is of course fixed in the meantime) I'm working/programming on PostfixAdmin upstream and use it myself on several servers, which means I'll (have to) maintain it. [opensuse-factory] Chromium to be included in Factory ?

Since last week Chromium has received it's own little place in the openSUSE OBS and will be removed from the Contrib repo's in the next few days. The thinking behind this move was to submit Chromium (including it's javascript interpreter V8) to Factory. It would be definitely good to have Chromium and V8 checked legally, but I wonder if inclusion in Factory is something that is really wanted. Or that there are obvious objections against it. If we would like to go forward with this, then I would like to ask if the project network:chromium can be listed as devel project for chromium, so that I can submit both packages. I've packaged it in my home project home:ajohansson:cdemu and I've been playing with it for a few hours, and it seems really useful. One step above loopback devices, in that the whole system thinks the ISO image is a real CD/DVD, and it handles multiple formats What's the opinion here? [opensuse-factory] RFC: Dropping xsane in favour of simple-scan from the default gnome pattern

Hi! I would like to request considering dropping xsane (the scanning application so the default in openSUSE GNOME) from the default gnome pattern in openSUSE 12.1 in favour of simple-scan [1], which is (as the name suggests) a much simpler and, in my opinion, more usable scanning utility. Simple-scan is also a gtk3 app making it integrate nicely in GNOME 3+. Please note that the request is to drop xsane from the default pattern alone, but not to have it removed from the OSS repo at all. Anyone who wants to use xsane instead could still do a "zypper install xsane" and with the default repositories enabled that would be that. For factory testers, simple-scan is already in Factory, and you can simply do "zypper in simple-scan" to install and start testing simple-scan. xsane should already be a part of your installation at the moment. So, Blizzard sent me some promo time and I figured I would go ahead and use it. Why not? AppDB lists it as Platinum or Gold, so its sure to work. And the installer runs beautifully, the launcher renders correctly. But once I click play, it doesn't actually launch the game... a game with a reputation for working really well with WINE. This is hardly the first problem I have had with gold and platinum rated games... in fact, none I have bothered with ever actually worked. The few times I have tried software not in the AppDB, and that worked... I wasn't able to add my findings to their DB since the version of WINE shipping with openSUSE is deprecated. I even installed the CVS builds from the WINE CVS repo. Still not working as it should. So the question is, what is the problem with our WINE implementation? And is there any chance a massive distro like ours could reach out to the WINE Developers to make sure when WINE ships in 12.1 it will perform better? To the credit of the experience of using WINE on openSUSE vs. Ubuntu (or Fedora if I remember correctly) we at least don't have the paranoia of CD/DVD executable media that makes it necessary to copy all files to HD just in order to use them. As far as that goes, we definately did better. Many of you may consider WINE to be a non-concern. I must however object that though it is not essential to the progression of our core technologies, it is very useful to the person checking it out; the casual user who still enjoys games, and has no ideological problem with using some proprietary software. It is hard for me to sell openSUSE to friends of mine who hate Windows, but still love games. "Well, there is WINE which will allow you (in theory) to run many Windows software titles... you can check the AppDB at WINEhq. But, honestly I find it rarely works quite as it says in the AppDB." Not a great way to get gamers to dump Windows. Hi, since Adobe seems to have officially commited to support 64 Bit it would be great if this version could end up in openSUSE 12.1. http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer11.html This would not only fix the nspluginwrapper issues but also save quite some disk space and download traffic, since nearly no 32 bit libs would be needed anymore in a default installation. I know that this is still a Beta, but it is not the first, Flash Player 11 will be released eventually and it works quite stable for many people. And Flash is updated anyway after distribution releases so there shouldn't really be a problem releasing a Beta version. And if it is integrated soon in Factory there will be even more testing. Flash Player 11 also has a Gnome and KDE (I haven't tested it but there are files in the tarball for it) configuration plugin which might come in handy too. Having separate tracker DBs for bugs and enhancement requests drives me nuts. Often the difference is one of semantics that people don't agree on. Searching for existing this way is about 4 times as much work. Now that openSUSE has been divorced from Novell, is it not in the plans for it to have a separate bug tracker? If so, can enhancement requests be restored to the same DB, like Fedora, Kernel, KDE, Gnome, Mandriva, Freedesktop, Mozilla and other FOSS do? FWIW, this came up today because in conjuction with bug day I tried a follow up on https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=700526. KPackageKit wanted to install 65 packages just because I asked it for flash-player. Zypper in flash-player only wanted 5, and only so many because I'd not yet installed Firefox with its mozilla-nss & mozilla-nss-certs that flash-player also requires and are usually already installed. So, I think KPackageKit ought to be made to obey /etc/zypp/zypper.conf's 'installRecommends = no', which I don't think appropriate to request of upstream KDE. To me it's a bug that all package manager UIs (YaST, Zypper, URPM, YUM, Smart, Aptitude, et al) don't rely on the same configuration settings, but knowing what I know about Novell's Bugzilla triage system I'd expect one filed there to be closed/FATE in short order. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." |Hello, I wanted to update syslog-ng in factory to syslog-ng 3.3 beta2 + patches to make sure, that 3.3 is included in Milestone 5. I ran into a strange problem. When I compile the project in its dedicated project at https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=home%3Aczanik%3Asyslog-ng33 it compiles without any problems and produces useful binaries. But when bco Base:System syslog-ng and copy the updated package sources there, I have a problem. Compiling goes fine, but post build checks fail, see https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=syslog-ng&project=home%3Acz… : ... running 06-check-installtest ... testing for pre/postinstall scripts that are not idempotent /.build_patchrpmcheck_scr: line 75: /etc/init.d/syslog: No such file or directory postinstall script of syslog-ng-3.3.0beta2-51.1.x86_64.rpm failed [ 232.739665] SysRq : Power Off 11.4 and earlier fail, as those don't have the required eventlog version (which is available in my other project), but I don't understand, why the build for factory fails. All, I have just submitted sleuthkit to factory. As the name implies, it is a collection of command-line tools used by computer forensic investigators. Sleuthkit has a long history and is fairly stable at this point. My SR is: https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/79619 Anyone interested in sleuthkit may also be interested that log2timeline was recently added to the security repo. The latest version of log2timeline depends on file timestamps being generated vie sleuthkit and is why I pushed sleuthkit to the security repo. log2timeline is still rapidly improving, so leaving it only in the security repo seems appropriate for now. Hello, It looks like a large amount of these messages "nothing provides python-gobject2 >= 2.21.3 needed by <packagename>" listed at [1] [1] https://build.opensuse.org/project/monitor?blocked=0&building=0&dispatching… In the message python-gobject2 is common to alot of the unresolvable items, can it be fixed ?. I was unsure if it belonged to factory or packaging so I sent it to both. Hello, I run factory in vmware for syslog-ng testing. As I don't use systemd and rsyslog, so I delete them. I'm quite happy with sysvinit, and even more happy with syslog-ng :) My problem is, that any time I use "zypper dup" on factory, these two packages get reinstalled: The following NEW packages are going to be installed: rsyslog 5.8.3-3.2 systemd 33-14.1 If there are already working init and syslog systems installed on the machine, why are these keep coming back? [opensuse-factory] Including SaX3 in factory

Hi All I believe SaX3 is good enough, to be pushed into factory. I would like to know if it can be included in factory as it will tested before 12.1 and I can include all the bugs reported as an update to 12.1 just as firefox does it. Also, what is the last date of factory submissions, September 1st 2011 just to make sure again. [opensuse-factory] Future of compiz

Hi everybody, Factory is nearing up to the 12.1 look and feel and I, as one of the Compiz maintainers, was wondering if it is in any way useful to keep compiz around for this release. The most 'prominent' DE using it was gnome, but with the move to GNOME 3 (actually 3.2 for the release), Compiz does not make sense (only one compositing manager can run at any time, so compiz and gnome-shell conflict). KDE4.x has most of the features of compiz anyway directly integrated (as far as I know). Is there anybody using compiz on other DEs? (lxde/xfce, even though that would be a bit contradicting their 'light' advertisement). If nobody cares for it, I might as well drop it from Factory; X11:Comiz will obviously stay around for as long as I find enough time to make it build with current infra.. In case anybody wants to keep it: That also means somebody needs to TEST it during Factory periods. Just collecting thoughts here. this showed up during a compile of some CAD software. I have seen this linking problem before. I also have a zypper download of openSuSE's fltk/fltk-devel and factory gcc. [opensuse-factory] How to make custom policy configuration?

Hi! It seems that the polkit policy in Factory is no longer compatible with HAL which is essential for normal use of KDE3. Is it possible to enable a custom policy set in KDE3 repository without forking the polkit-default-priv package? That is with current Factory policy a KDE3 user can enable say, automatic mounting of removable media with the following command: sudo polkit-auth --user $USER --grant org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable But this command is not suitable for autostart (because requires a root password) and also not suitable for install-time because it requires a username and cannot be used to enable the privilege for all users.
