[opensuse-factory] Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) for openSUSE.

Folks - In yesterday's discussion about the future of SaX2 it has been requested that changes that will affect users in the future are communicated to the openSUSE community early. KMS (kernel mode setting) integration would be such a feature, thus I would like to announce this here and one step further dive into a technical discussion about a possible solution. Furthermore test packages are available to try things out on Factory. I would like to encourage people interested in development and technical discussions in general to participate in the discussion and the development efforts. Kernel Modesetting (KMS) ======================== All of you who are using a graphical desktop on Linux have been using the X Window Sytem. The X Window System Server (XServer) is the instance which receives requests from your desktop applications to draw all the widgets (windows, buttons, images etc.) you see on your desktop. It also processes input from your keyboard and mouse and sends them to applications as events. Traditionally on Linux the XServer does not only draw images to the screen (ie writes them to some sort of frame buffer) but it is in charge of initializing, setting up and driving the graphics hardware. This paradigm which has been true since the X Window System has been ported to Linux is about to change: Much of the initialization, set up (video mode setting) and control of the graphics hardware is about to move to the Linux kernel. There are a number of advantages to this: - A central instance is in charge of the graphics hardware, other user mode applications (not just the Xserver) can take advantage of mode setting. - The Xserver will no longer require full root privileges as it doesn't talk to the hardware directly any more. - Faster boot process: The Xserver doesn't need to (re)initialize the graphics hardware any more, this is all done by the kernel very early in the boot cycle. - Smoother (flicker free) boot experience: The screen doesn't flicker and changes resolution any more when the Xserver starts. - One central entity is in charge and manages the resources of the graphics hardware - like the video memory which makes sharing of these resources between several applications (like Xserver and several DRI (Direct Rendering 3D) applications much easier. KMS is integrated in the DRM drivers. In the near future most graphics driver will switch to KMS: - Intel already ships a fully working KMS driver. Future Intel chipsets will be supported by the KMS driver only. - KMS in the Radeon DRM driver is still work in progress but it is already working well on some chipsets. - Noveau is relying heavily on KMS for their free 3D driver for NVIDIA chipsets. The proprietary ATI and NVIDIA drivers are unlikely to switch to KMS in the near future. Integration in openSUSE ======================= Now this begs the question what we have to do to integrate it into openSUSE. Originall I had plans to look into this for openSUSE 11.2 already - but then I got side tracked by other stuff it fell on the floor and noone else beat me to it either ... oh well. Now I had the chance to play around with KMS a little and came up with some ideas and a proof of concept. It turned out that the changes to openSUSE needed to fully support KMS are quite small. Key is to load the KMS aware DRM driver as early as possible in the boot process to avoid video mode changes later in the boot cycle - preferrably in the initrd. The Boot Process ---------------- On openSUSE the boot loader is configured for two boot scenarios: default and failsafe. The user can select the failsafe boot scenario in case the default scenario does not work for him. In the failsafe scenario certain features are deactivated which have shown to cause problems on some systems. Since KMS is a new feature it is a candidate for deactivation during a failsafe boot. Instead the system should then boot into the VESA framebuffer mode. Should this also fail the kernel will automatically fall back to a VGA text mode. To disable KMS on boot a new boot parameter is introduced: 'nomodeset'. This parameter is to the boot command line for the failsafe mode. The user may add this parameter by hand for any other boot mode. The kernel command line is parsed in initrd and an appropriate entry is created in /etc/modprobe.d/options. Furthermore the graphics driver module and - if required - the agp module(s) are added in the correct order (agp modules first) to the list of modules to be loaded initially. Changes to individual packages ============================== 1. yast2-bootloader & perl-Bootloader ------------------------------------- The boot parameter 'nomodeset' is added to the failsafe boot paramter lists in each of the modules. (I have not been able to find out which module provides the entry relevant for which situation, therefore I've whacked both.) yast2-bootloader updates the variable FAILSAFE_APPEND in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader appropriately. 2. kernel-source ---------------- To use KMS for a certain DRM driver the kernel config option CONFIG_DRM_<driver_name>_KMS needs to be set to 'y'. At the moment we will support KMS only for Intel hardware, thus only the variable CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS needs to be changed. In the sample build this has been enabled for the -default, -desktop, -pae, -debug, -trace and -vanilla kernels for the i386 and x86_64 platforms. The kernel boot splash has already been fixed for KMS for openSUSE 11.2. 3. mkinitrd ----------- This package writes the initrd file. To add KMS support to the initrd mkinitrd needs to perform the following tasks: 1. Check the sysconfig variable NO_KMS_IN_INITRD, if set, don't attempt to install a KMS DRM capable driver. 2. Obtain a list of PCI devices installed on the system. 3. a. In the list of PCI devices identify those devices which are of class VGA and look for a matching driver. b. Before a driver is matched check the PCI vendor, device, subvendor and subdevice ids against a blacklist in /etc/kms/blacklist should this file exist. This file contains one vendor, device, subvendor and subdevice id per line, '*' serves as a wildchar, trailing wildchars may be ommitted, '#' at the beginning of a line serves as a comment. c. Use the standard modprobe alias mechanism to find a matching DRM driver module. This way standard blacklistings of kernel modules will be honored and update modules will be searched if they are available. KMS capable DRM drivers provide an alias list (in contrast to non-KMS capable DRM drivers which are to be loaded explicitely by the Xserver). d. If a driver is found check for a black listing in /etc/kms/<driver_name>.blacklist. The same rules as in 3 b. apply. 4. If a KMS capable DRM driver is found search for an agp driver: a. Obtain a list of all known agp drivers for the specific kernel and collect their alias lists. b. Match all installed PCI devices against the alias lists of each agp driver. If a match is found add the driver to the lists of modules to be loaded. Make sure that this driver is loaded prior the the DRM driver. Two scripts setup-kms.sh and boot-kms.sh are added to mkinitrd. The former performs the tasks listed above, the latter provides the required module dependencies in the required order, parses the boot command line for the 'nomodeset' option and adds the apropriate entry to /etc/modprobe.d/options. The linuxrc script is extended to search the boot command line for <drivername>.<option>=* strings for each driver loaded in initrd and add the <option>=* part to /etc/modprobe.d/options. 4. udev ------- Udev loads any modules which are not loaded by linuxrc scripts directly. It is possible to let udev load the required DRM and AGP modules provided it is made sure that this happens in the correct order. Since there is no explicit dependency of DRM modules to AGP drivers as there is no general one to one match between the two drivers a udev rule must exist to enforce the correct order for all cases where a AGP module is required. This is true for Intel DRM drivers and any other driver for an AGP graphics chip. For this a rule file 79-waitfor-agp.rules is added which is run before 80-drivers.rules. It checks if either an Intel graphics (class VGA) device is processed or if the graphics device is an AGP device. The latter condition is tested by an auxiliary tool (is_agp) which is passed the kernel name of the event device. If either condition is true udev will wait for /dev/agpgart to appear before proceeding to load a DRM driver module. 'is_agp' checks the capabilities flags in the PCI config space of this device for AGP. The changes to udev are not strictly required to make KMS work, still they augment the default module load process Installation ============ Modified packages for Factory of - kernel-source, - mkinitrd, - yast2-bootloader, - perl-Bootloader, - mkinitrd - udev can be found in my build service home on OBS under home:eeich:Factory-KMS. For installation add http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home://eeich://Factory-KMS/openSU… to your installation repository and update the packages in question (going thru the usual vendor change hassle). It is advisable to update mkinitrd before updating the kernel. Then when the kernel is installed the modified mkinitrd will be used and all steps required to install KMS will be performed. [opensuse-factory] [ANNOUNCE] Will update PackageKit to 0.6.1 in Factory next week

Hi, Looking at the git log from PackageKit, it looks like Scott managed to fix the build of the zypp backend -- which was the reason we were stuck with an old PackageKit (0.5.1). So we'll put the next release of PackageKit in Factory (0.6.1, due next week, I think). Note that this changes the API (at least deprecated API were removed) and therefore will possibly break tools using PackageKit that were not prepared for this. You can take a look at the NEWS file for more details: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/packagekit/tree/NEWS As far as I know, there are two major consumers of PackageKit: gnome-packagekit (which should be fine) and the KDE update applet (no idea what the status is here). Is it an option to not update PackageKit? Not really: the version we have is old, not really maintained, and my guess is that we'll soon have tools that will require the new stuff there. Hi, I submitted a new package to openSUSE:Factory: upstart. Mainly because of https://features.opensuse.org/305690 - the biggest gain of having it is clearly that everyone else has it, it doesn't get openSUSE a win right away. But not having it, may become a disadventage shortly - who knows. For now we will support sysvinit and upstart as alternatives, but my preference would be not for long. The package I submitted is pretty much only a start and adopting our scripts to upstart will be less of a pain if we do not have to support alternatives. [opensuse-factory] patches for PulseAudio?

I wrote this on the PulseAudio list: On openSuSE, I use these packages, mostly from the factory repository: alsa-1.0.22-2.5.i586 pulseaudio-0.9.21-2.4.i586 skype-2.1.0.81-suse111.i586 phonon-4.3.80-4.2.i586 (everything else from KDE is 4.3.95) I experience a big delay (more than a second), especially problematic while using Skype. I've configured KDE to use `PulseAudio' as the output device for everything. And I got this answer: Please ask your distribution to include the patches from the "stable-queue" git branch in PA git. Most other distributions now regularly apply those patches. And so should yours. The Skype issue is fixed there. My question: Does this happen for OpenSuSE too? Hi, Does anyone know any users of /usr/bin/hostid? We have a custom one in the util-linux package but upstream coreutils contains a different implementation. Ours prints '0xnumber' while upstream only prints 'number'. Also ours allows to set the hostid and the man page refers to /etc/hostid. However, hostid doesn't actually read that file and there also doesn't seem to be an init script for it either. I installed ffmpeg. [opensuse-factory] Garbage login screen after install 11.3M2

Hi, I installed 11.3M2 on a system with a Geforce 8600 GT graphics card, and two monitors attached to it. Installation went - not regarding bug #581515 concerning complaints of grub, which I ignored - smoothly, up till the point of installing the packages. I left the system while it went installing the packages, and returned after half an hour, to see only a few green lines, on both monitors the same. Hard reset was the only option, and on restart I got some green points - not a real improvement. I couldn't find a bug for this. Any thoughts? [opensuse-factory] Grub reports: incompatible with system setup in 11.3M2

Hi, I wanted to install M3 on x86_64 system, with has 4 disks with raid-1 (boot) and raid-5 partitions (root, and home partitions) on it, and one separate disk. I want to install M3 on that separate disk, without touching the raids. The install procedure leads me wel to that goal, but when I am to actually install the chosen setup, I get a message saying Unsupported combination of hardware platform x86_64 and bootloader grub. I don't want to risk damaging the raidsetup (although I have actual backup's), so I wonder what's gonna happen if I do install this setup. Anyone any idea? [opensuse-factory] /boot/grub/menu.lst is not used

M2 installed on this past Sunday to /dev/md3 (sda10/sdb10) RAID1 . Nothing updated since. Controlling boot loader is Grub from oS 10.2 installed to /dev/sda1, which is never mounted to /boot no matter which oS (11.0, 11.1 & M2 are installed) is booted. When I boot M2 after modifying /boot/grub/menu.lst on M2's md3, the gfxmenu I get is the original <http://fm.no-ip.com/tmp/SUSE/menu.lst.01-big31-md3-os113>, not the current <http://fm.no-ip.com/tmp/SUSE/menu.lst.04-big31-md3-os113>. Even when I delete menu.* from md3's /boot/grub, and rename /boot/message, the original menu and /boot/message still get used, and its use is from configfile on another partition anyway. This does not happen with the 11.0 & 11.1 installs on the same system from the same Grub doing configfile the same way for all <http://fm.no-ip.com/tmp/SUSE/menu.lst.0e-big31-sda1>. What's going on here? Did the installer put menu.lst and message someplace other than /boot/grub on the installation target? How could the old 10.2 Grub be finding files I deleted? I tried booting Knoppix, mounting the individual md3 component partitions separately to compare (successfully) for identical content. Hi. I get a lot of udevd messages, when system boots from live cd and i don't know what does it mean. [opensuse-factory] Kernel panic on boot with new Factory packages, possibly related to gcc 4.5

Hi, Just for your information, I just filed https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=582222 as I can't boot any of the kernels compiled for Factory in the last few days, possibly due to gcc 4.5 and possibly due to using reiserfs as the root partition. Note that all causes are speculation right now. I can boot the last kernel from before the gcc switch fine, so things point in that area, though. If someone else runs into that problem, it would probably be good to get more data on the bug as to how to reproduce this, I hope some knowing developer will find a way to reproduce, debug and fix it. On linuxtoday.com I just read review of "Pulseaudio and Kmix 4.4 in Sabayon 5" saying that the issues with pulseaudio and kde 4.4 have been fixed, something along the lines that kmix 4 has pulseaudio integration. I wonder if openSUSE has fixed it in Milestone 1/2. There was a problem where some programs would not run if kmix and pavucontrol were both running, e.g skype would only run with pavucontrol running. On one box skype was working with pavucontrol, then it refused to work. Every box seemed to have a pulseaudio/kmix quirk, so I shifted work around to where things were happy running. I haven't touched what worked after upgrading to Milestone 1 and Milestone2. One comment on the article - a guy says that pulseaudio is the one thing driving him away from Ubuntu, another guy says his cure was "mv /usr/bin/pulseaudio /usr/bin/pulsesucks" - and some guys on here have said something or other similarly is driving them away from openSUSE. [opensuse-factory] Unusual directory

I noticed a directory in M2 with an unusual name, "/Œ^," owned by GDM. There are no files or sub-directories in it. Does anyone know what this might be? GDM crashed on me when I updated to M2, and it could have been created then, but I'd like to find out what it is before removing it. Why is that the high lighted and pull down cell information fails to copy down. This has always been a very useful function. You could copy down formulas and increment the cell numbers as you pulled them down. Hi, While having fun with a gnome-packagekit update, I noticed that we patch it to launch smolt on startup if needed. This is, hrm, wrong -- it's better to have an autostart file for this. However it got me thinking about smolt in general. Currently, as far as I can tell, the user is prompted to send his smolt profile on installation only. I would guess that this means the user won't submit his profile after an upgrade to a new openSUSE version, which sounds wrong to me. Am I understanding things right? Should we change this? Also, by default, at least in GNOME, we just launch smoltGui which, hrm, is not what is most interesting to submit the profile. I think what we'd want here (at least for GNOME, again) is a really simple UI that asks you if you want to submit your profile, and gives you the URL/password afterwards. Any opinion? I installed MS1 a couple of weeks ago. Since then the user cannot access the DVD/CD drives (2) on /dev/sr0 and sr1. I checked permissions and they look the same as my 11.2 installation. On sr0 and sr1 advance permissions show the user as a named user and a Mask permission. brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 2010-02-17 10:03 /dev/sr0 brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 2010-02-17 10:03 /dev/sr1 for both sr0 & 1. Mask 660 rw- Named User finemanruss 660 rw- cdrom &cdrom1 root:cdrom Link for owner, group and other. cdrw & cdrw1 root:cdrom Link for owner, group and other. dvd & dvd1 root:cdrom Link for owner, group and other. dvdrw & dvdrw1 root:cdrom Link for owner, group and other. 11.1 Fixes: In 11.1 there was a fix to the PolicyKit as temporary fix until upgrade came out: /usr/share/PolicyKit/policy/org.freedesktop.hal.device-access.policy change <action id="org.freedesktophal.device-access.removable-block"> Then a change is made. Another way was to make user of group cdrom and add a rule to /etc/udev/rules.d/99-my.rules file. KERNEL =="sr*[0-9]", GROUP="cdrom", Mode 0660" 11.2 worked out of box by just adding user to group cdrom, audio, Video. and disk. Not sure all are necessary. PolicyKit policy and rules.d entry to not exist on 11.3 by those names. On 11.3 user is member of groups mentioned for 11.2. In process of downloading 11.3 MS2 to see if fix is there? The thing that is holding up the completion of the installation is a warning message that lirc is missing or has not been installed. If you do not click on the OK button on the notification window, the install will not finish. It's hard to do if the entire screen is black. A work around for this is to use a live CD i.e. Parted Magic. Create and format the partitions first. Then, install Milestone 2 and you will be able to see the entire installation. Good Luck! [opensuse-factory] mawk as an alternative to gawk

I'd like to propose the inclusion of mawk into Factory as an alternative to gawk. This requires two changes, gawk would need to support update-alternatives and mawk would need to be added to Factory. My rationale is that mawk is significantly faster than gawk, that it is (almost, still WIP) POSIX.2 compliant and supports only few extensions, which allows for testing and ensuring the portability of scripts. There should be no side effects, mawk would remain an optional package and have a lower update-alternatives priority than gawk. [opensuse-factory] 11.3M1 KDE LiveCD Fails on Thinkpad A22m

When I use the M1 disk, I get a corrupted desktop that basically freezes the computer unless I select Text Mode. The display is 1400x1050 with an ATI Mobility M3/8MB chip. None of the graphics options worked(I did not try VESA). This chip is very well supported. When selecting Text Mode and Installation, you don't get anything except a login prompt. If we aren't supporting installation from Text Mode, maybe that shouldn't be an allowed option? Or maybe there should be some text explaining that you can't install from Text mode? I was able to run SaX2 from Text Mode to properly select the video settings and when I did an "init 5" the installation started. I was given a warning that I need 1GB to run the installation from the LiveCD. Is this really a requirement now? The machine only supports 512MB MAX. Also, I have a swap partition. Perhaps it could be set to ask if an existing swap partition should be used? Installing now. Will update on what happens when it's done. And Yes, I know M2 is out. Don't have an internet connection fast enough to pull it ATM, and I needed to do a reinstall because my 11.0 install got corrupted and only had the M1 disk handy so thought I would give it a go. Also, now we have to check the box to agree with the license agreement? I thought that it wasn't necessary anymore as of 11.1 or something.... [opensuse-factory] 11.3M1 fails to install in VirtualBox

Hi folks, I've been trying to install 11.3M1 into a VirtualBox VM but every installation i've tried hangs at "Loading basic drivers..." immediately after selecting "Installation" on the boot screen. No keys work, screen freezes. I have another machine which I dup'ed from 11.2 to factory and that works in the same virtualbox, so I don't think its a major kernel incompatibility. I'm running VirtualBox 3.1.4BETA2. I've tried Milestone 1 netinstall + DVD, and build 437 netinstall, i586. Does anyone have a successful install of 11.3 in VirtualBox? Can anyone tell me how to get more info on what modules the kernel is trying to load? None of the other VTs are active yet at the stage where it hangs... Are there any kernel options I should try? I already tried nolapic, noacpi, and the "Failsafe" kernel. I've seen some old bug reports on bnc that never seemed to have been resolved, but I would guess that they're not related. Hi, I recently visited the x.org websites and saw that X11R7.5 (a.k.a. X.org server 1.7) has been available for a while now as a stable release. In Factory as well as OBS, I still see R7.4 though. Are there plans to upgrade X.org to that newer release in Factory? I would have guessed that with all the buzz about KMS and phasing out sax2 that an upgrade of X.org was in the works, but I couldn't find stuff to test there... [opensuse-factory] 11.3 Milestone 1 KDE Live CDs

I am running a 32-bit system. I have now downloaded - from ftp5.gwdg.de (Factory) site - the Build0422 and Build0436 copies of the 11.3 Milestone 1 KDE Live CDs. Neither will "run" (ie, do what they are supposed to do: provide me with a Live version of 11.3). Both are OK as far as passing Media Checks, and Verify when being 'burned' in K3b, is concerned. Both CDs stop "Dead, never to go again, when...." they get to either- * "Disabling IP Forwarding."; or * "Checking quotas. This may take some time." at the beginning of the 'loading' process. I've had no problems with Live CDs of previous (KDE) versions of openSUSE. Am I missing some info. about why these Builds of 11.3 KDE Live CDs will not "run", unless some magical incantations are first performed in the nude and under a full moon? Factory Folks, This is a post for which I didn't get a response on the user list. I've described the problem below. Bottom line, something in the kde44 install causes the gnome-setting-daemon to crash in 11.0 and I cannot figure out what's going on. One thing that is new to me is this 'parcellite' process. I don't know if it is related, but I don't recall ever seeing a parcellite error before. Bottom line, I need your help to figure out how to restore the gnome setting daemon. Let me know if you want me to send anything else or if you have any ideas of any tests to run to isolate the problem. This is a problem for both i586 and x86_64. I have the same problem on two separate 11.0 boxes that I moved to kde44 for testing. I have placed the current .xsession-errors file at: (140k) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/kde4/xsession-crashes_02.txt.bz2 The original post follows. Let me know your thoughts, I'm stumped. Thanks. listmates, As mentioned earlier, after the kde44 install, gnome is really messed up on 11.0. I have gone back and collected all the symptoms I can in hope somebody can help me figure out how to fix gnome. Gnome was working perfectly immediately before kde44 install. After the install, it looks is has lost the ability to set any of its setting. What is very strange is that the fonts are huge even though they are set at the same 8pt as in kde. The look like they are 12-14pt without the gnome settings daemon running. Here is what happens when I try to start gnome: Immediately after typing in my username/password and selecting gnome, the following error is received during gnome start: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The last error message was: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Then, the first thing you notice on login - No background (the splash screen is left as the bg). The Lower and Upper Panels are Present and work, it just looks strange against the splash background. So I open Gnome Control Panel. It opens just fine, but like everything else is completely bland without any settings applied. I then try and click appearance to see if I can adjust any settings. Immediately Upon Clicking Appearance, the following occurs: (1) the proper window color and decorations appear for ~1 second, then: (2) gnome-settings-daemon crash. Error: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The error is repeatable every time. The appearance daemon will ultimately open after ~15-20 seconds, however it is non-functional. Meaning you can click the button, but nothing changes. The Fonts: In Gnome, the fonts are 4-5 points larger in appearance than they are set. Currently I have them set at 8pt and they look more like 12 or 14pt. Probably some xdpy stuff that the gnome-settings-daemon does? Compiz will start, but it starts with a Black Screen. The only way to get your desktop back is the switch back to metacity. First question -- What else can I post that might help? I would really like to get gnome back up and running. How in the world could installing kde mess up gnome. That's not supposed to happen. After some criticism sent over about minor or medium complains, about 11.2 and 11.3 Milestone 0, I would now like to send a good and strong "many congratulations on a job well done!" regarding the installation DVD of openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 1. I downloaded the metalink Gnome desktop version and installed as guest machine, under VirtualBox 3.1.2 openSUSE 11.2 (64bits) host. Installation goes flawlessly, straightforward and quick, defaulting onto ext4 filesystem (which to me represents a completely new environment, since I always used ext3). I have not yet played with this very newcomer openSUSE, but, at first glance, I have been very good impressed. That is noticeable, considering it is "just a Milestone1". Hey Group; How many people are having problems with non HP USB printer that frequent this list. I have a NON HP printer that is made by Brother (works perfectly according to Linuxprinting.org) that totally fails. Yet /var/log/cups/files shows very little useful and USB shows it is available (hwinfo --printer). My brother is also having problems with a printer that used to work. [opensuse-factory] Introduce new Chinese font in openSUSE 11.3

Hi all, It's important for us to provide a suitable font for Chinese user after FZSongti had been removed from openSUSE 11.1 because of license issue. So, I'll propose WenQuanYi as the default Chinese font in openSUSE 11.3. It's a free font released under GPLv2 (http://wenq.org/enindex.cgi?ZenHei%28en%29#Copyright_disclaimer_and_license for details) and have a well appearance. Ohter distributions like Ubuntu have already used this font. Now, we have almost done the packaging at M17N repo and bnc#472268 for tracking the process, I hope this can be introduced in 11.3. Yast2 Connection Wizard Connection Settings Model Connection Description Unknown usb:/dev/usb/lp0 No longer valid (printer not connected) Hey Group; Above is the output from Yast2 Printer Connection Wizard lsusb names it, hwinfo displays all about it. The kernel module mentioned is shown by "ps ax". Yet it fails to work. It does work in Fedora - using the same connection on this machine. Why does openSuSE only fail to print? Hello, Just a side comment about the fact that yesterday I "duped" my Factory to latest Milestone and when rebooting nothing happens, both normal boot or failsafe (dark screen). Evolution still maintains the authorization problem of the password wallet, then crashes.
