[opensuse-factory] Small usability comment on YaST2 installer

Hi, Last weekend I gave a openSUSE 11.0 Alpha3 disk to a friend and made him install openSUSE... I tried to follow a bit what he did and where issues were. The biggest thing I've seen that he was to much attracted by the green next button, even though the system was busy and next not available (like on first screen, when system is initializing.. the next button is green and as there is nothing else, it's very attractive to click it... ). Otherwise he was not that much worried by the installation... except: the first user he wanted to create, as a typical windows user, he wanted to name it Admin... ;) but even that's a valid user... The partition proposal was a bit weird... he had a 40GB disk, 20GB filled with windows.. openSUSE suggested to delete windows and use the whole disk... of course *I* would agree to this.. he was not really pleased. [opensuse-factory] [status report] openSUSE distribution, week 15

Hi, This week we had base system freeze and heading towards Beta1 next week. For this we mastered DVDs named Alpha3plus that we use for internal testing of the installation workflow and some media layout - to avoid bad suprises with beta1. So far it looks really, really good - I found only one critical (already fixed) and two minor problems. The DVDs are now based on images - meaning they install in record time, but this creates currently some problems for factory users. I plan to create a more detailed blog about this feature tomorrow. Also the autoconfiguration feature is tested for the first time and the live installer saw some fixes, so we hope to finalize the "only DVDs and live CDs" strategy with beta1. KDE4 is under hot discussion, not sure yet what to do. I'm sure I forgot tons of things, right now we see really a lot of changes. [opensuse-factory] How to Change the BootSplash in the Installation CD/DVD?

Hi All, I am a new member here. I have few questions about remastering the openSUSE-10.3 that I hope I could ask them in this mailing list. One of my questions is about how to change the bootsplash in the installation DVD. I have tried the below method, but it didn't work: - I have extracted the DVD content in ~/DVD_DIR, - placed my theme in /etc/bootsplash/theme, - executed the following command (as suggested in the bootsplash.org) # splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/themes/MYTHEME/config/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg \ >> ~DVD_DIR/boot/i386/loader/initrd, - and made the new ISO file from ~/DVD_DIR directory. When I boot the new ISO, it shows a black screen and freezes, when the kernel loads the initrd. I have to mention that, I faced no problem when I used the mkinitrd command to change the bootsplash in the initrd of the installed system. Also, I had no problem making the ISO file when I don't change the bootsplash. It seems that I do something wrong when I am importing the bootsplash theme into the initrd. [opensuse-factory] Zypper can be dangerous

Hi list, I just attempted to get my yast2 working again, by downgrading,using zypper. It suggested A whole lot of removals and upgrades. I thought ok at least it will get me going again. Anyway, it somehow removed itself (zypper) and then failed taking half my system with it. I can't file a bug report until I get firefox or kde back even then what was the bug? I've got zypper working by manualy installing rpms and am trying to recover kde etc. A possible clue is the following message from zypper which I select retry. Media source 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-Factory-non-oss/inst-source-ex…' does not contain the desired medium Abort, retry, ignore? [A/r/i]: r I'll be happy to hand my zypper logs over but I really can't think what bug to file. [opensuse-factory] Handling of delta rpm chains

I realise this is the factory list, but as it's not possible to test updates and delta rpms on alpha this is with reference to 10.3. I often find that YOU attempts to download a full rpm, although this rpm can be constructed from resources on the local disk. For example: The previously current version was not yet installed: 2nd-last-version(installed) -> .delta.rpm -> last-version -> .delta.rpm -> new version Similarly when there are delta rpms missing. Or like this: original install media -> .delta.rpm -> new version Unless there is no delta rpm published leading to the new version, there is more than one way to construct the needed rpm, although it may require more than one step, or starting with an older version than is installed. Is the new zypper etc. able to make use of any of this? I'd find it rather handy, as I suspect would everyone who is on dial-up. Or in other words, is it possible to solve for minimal downloads as opposed to the currently happening maximum downloads? Perhaps it doesn't help that yast can't use deltas from local disk, one has to run vsftpd to turn file:///updates/ into ftp://localhost/updates/ (arrrgh). Hey guys, I figured you were far enough along to start testing 11 on my spare hard drive. Any way, I can't seem to get it past the system probing screen.
