[opensuse-factory] flash-player with wmode in firefox

For the majority of the people reading the list, a short introduction: Many sites nowadays have banners that roll over the text of the article. In Linux you might have noticed that after the banners move away, they leave blank space behind that cover the text, making it impossible to read the page. Also, the same problem is the cause for site menus that open behind flash animations instead of in front (example: http://www.adobe.com ) This problem is caused by a missing feature called wmode (windowless mode) in the flash-player for linux. Well, the latest flash-player 10 RC is supposed to have the feature. There are a few problems though: 0. Flash is still 32 bit. So, to make it work on x86_64, it needs 32 bit libraries of stuff, besides the nspluginwrapper hack Do this: zypper in mozilla-nss-32bit 1. Flash depends on libcurl.so.3. This can be solved by installing libcurl4-32bit ("zypper in libcurl4-32bit") and making a symlink cd /usr/lib/ ln -s libcurl.so.4.1.0 libcurl.so.3 2. Firefox 3.0.1 has a bug that crashes it when running with flash 10rc. Firefox 3.0.3 is supposed to have that bug fixed If you want to try it, get Flash10rc here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html Put libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/browser-plugins/ Run as root (one line): nspluginwrappper --install --verbose /usr/lib/browser- plugins/libflashplayer.so Here it's a small demo for the wmode feature. http://www.communitymx.com/content/source/E5141/wmodetrans.htm Unfortunately, it still doesn't work well with Firefox 3.0.3 from Factory. I don't know why. At least site menus open in front of flash. I think I'll try Firefox nightly builds (Minefield). I think that 11.1 should be released with Flash10, because wmode is an important, functional feature for browsing the web. [opensuse-factory] Thoughts About the "Contrib" repository

Hi: Even though I decided to contribute to the "Contrib" repository as a reviewer and indeed think there is a sproblem with the repository layout I still have a number of bad feelings, it smells bad for me, sorry! Im going to summarize what I think is wrong with this idea. From the organization point of view, it persist in the wrong way of seeing community contributors as "second class" citizens, that needs a separate repository, isolated from the main distribution, this is by far my biggest concern. Technically, it has mayor issues - No clear submission process - No security policies - No maintenance policies - No timeframe to get things done ( no, we cannot keep going forever, it would be impossible to test) - there is no QA team. - the contrib list does not show any noticeable activity - Due to the previous problems, It may become the "abandonware" repository. - No specific bugzilla component. - Possible many other "details" Im missing because Im not kinda the "process" kid on the block. No, things said here http://en.opensuse.org/Contrib are not enough ;-) So far, I fail to see this going anywhere and while I think the existance of this repository is fundamentally flawed Im still willing to help because it may provide us some lessons to learn the hard way before moving to a different approach. Hello, could we know why RealPlayer was dropped from openSUSE? Are there legal reasons behind this, or it is just an arbitrary decision to reduce the number of packages? [opensuse-factory] Changing network settings in yast2 lan

hi, when I run "yast2 lan" I get a popup saying "This configuration is not compatible with NetworkManager. Use nm-settings applet or switch to Traditional Method with ifup" and everything disabled. First of all, I assume that the configuration isn't compatible with _yast2_ and not NetworkManager as the popup says. However, when I try to run "nm-applet" I get: ** (nm-applet:8240): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service. [opensuse-factory] Suspend nightmare

After reading the thread on auto hibernation I selected suspend from the kde3 log out menu. It had never worked in the past but this time unfortunatly it did. My machine went through the shutdown process and after pressing the power button proceeded to restart, finished the part where it loads the saved suspend data and locked up just before the mouse would have been recognized. The nightmare part came when repeated attempts from rescue disk to kexec back to my system also failed. Eventually I booted with acpi=off and noresume successfuly my failsafe section on the boot menu is identical to my normal section for some reason as well. Is this a known bug, if it is the suspend section needs to be removed from kde3 shutdown menu. [opensuse-factory] command-not-found - usage, and when will be implemented

openSUSE Beta 3 (from Factory Repository). I know command-not-found is quite new to suse, but I haven't really heard anything around it. Will it be fully implemented into openSUSE 11.1? I have the package installed, but when I type banshee1 or banshee i just get command not found (I expected it to tell me what package to install.) It may be that I did an upgrade from 11.0 and the required enteries weren't put into my bash.bashrc. So I guess I should ask for the final release, will this be merged into their current bash.bashrc, or will it only work for new people? Also, in the README, shouldn't it recommend people to create and put it in bash.bashrc.local? since that is read from bash.bashrc? Whelp.. I'll add and test it out and see how it is. [opensuse-factory] When will we get automatic retries on installation downloads?

Hi, after a factory update with quite a few 504 file not found errors, with wireshark running to prove it was due to mirrors not having the file, I have added my bit to https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=425035 and voted for it as well. I have seen many complaints about leaving a system to update overnight and waking up in the morning to an http 504 error where if libzypp had automatically retried two or three times then the installation/update would have completed. The above bug is only an enhancement request so it needs your votes but I think libzypp not automatically retrying a few times ( nobody wants to wake up to retry loop due to another problem) should be a bug by now, all it would take is a few extra lines of code before the "file not found" error is reported. Things have come a long way since 11.0 alpha when I had the problem of libzypp retrying the same mirror, now it switches to another mirror on retry, this makes automatic retries possible without problems. Hi, I'm looking at the bundle-lang packages. I think the list of GNOME packages is not complete for current factory (missing system-config-printer, for example). Would it make sense to generate the list of packages a bit more dynamically instead of having some hardcoded packages.txt file? Also, I was wondering about creating a bundle-lang-gnome-extras bundle for GNOME stuff that is not installed by default but that we still distribute. Any opinion on this? Hi All, Was wondering if others have noticed this too: When booting and also when restarting the network service, openSUSE is trying to get an address for an unplugged Ethernet port - resulting in an unnecessary delay. Turns out the network device defaults to 'activate at boot time' instead of 'on cable connect'. I've noticed this with a clean install of beta2 and beta3. Might be relevant: this is on a Dell Latitude laptop that has a Broadcom (b44) nic. Anyone else having this? note: I've also installed the Xen packages.. could be this sets the nic to always be active? Will check this is related on my next fresh beta4 install. Hi, As testing sometimes produces unwanted situations, i keep my mail on the server, to be able to approach it from another box of os, if the testbox fails in some regard.... Every day or two, i have to clean the 800 - 1000 mails from it, when i checked them. Is there another app up to do this? tia for an answer PS. Updating to B3 without any probs wse, using the new yast sources module @system. Hi! I did a zypper dup last night on a post beta2 factory installation. > 900M should be downloaded, updated, reinstalled. With every new package I got multiple rpmdb2solv zombie processes in "ps xa". Close to the end of the dup process, it were more that 8500. I am not sure if this is reproducable, so this is just fyi. Now I see another strange thing: After reboot, I typed "zypper dup" again, to see if the "always update whole distribution" bug was gone.
