[opensuse-factory] modules gobble disk space with built kernel

/lib/modules/(stock2.6.21kernel)# du -s 60804 . /lib/modules/(my2.6.21kernel)# du -s 538292 . That's a 785% increase in space consumed by my modules over stock modules. Does that happen for anyone building their own Factory kernel? Can a more normal space consumption be made to happen by a mere mortal kernel building novice like myself? [opensuse-factory] AIGLX

Users tend to ask about AIGLX quite a bit. Why do we not have this enabled by default, where possible? Xgl is nice and a lot of people prefer it (including myself), but a lot of people prefer using AIGLX too. Having it enabled by default where possible of course also provides the possibility of switching between compiz/kwin/metacity easier too. If not setting it up by default, perhaps we could consider having a script similar to gnome-xgl-switch for setting it up a little more easily for users. Any thoughts? [opensuse-factory] Can't Rescue 10.3

Friday I determined that 4096 was an inappropriate blocksize for my non-libata hda19 Factory / partition. I booted 10.1 from hda7 and did a cp -a on that partition to another partition, reformatted to the 1024 blocksize, then did cp -a back to it. I then tried to mount and chroot to it in order to run grub-install. Grub-install failed due to the non-existent target device. Copying the hda19 device file from the 10.1 / and trying again didn't help. I tried to do a rescue installation, but both rescue modes apparently failed for a similar or the same reason. Very anoying, to have to install pkgs and apps to your system, you never use, just to fullfill deps. Is there a way to check which gnome specific pkgs are realy needed to run suse? I am satisfied with KDE and if xfce is dependable on gnome, i will get rid of it also. I want to run a 'gnomeclean' KDE environment. Is this possible? Hi, I'd just discuss something that I got hit with: The PolicyKit package no longer contains the manpages - if you want them you need to install PolicyKit-doc as well. IMO, this is a *relly* *really* ... *really* wrong decision, which was obviously made because of *build* reasons: * Sat Aug 11 2007 aj(a)suse.de - Make separate spec file for PolicyKit-doc so that PolicyKit does not require TeX for building. If the command remove is given then it would seem to be more efficient to first check the installed rpms before loading the repositories. Test to see if there is any thing to remove. This is especially true if one tends to type package names incorrectly. [opensuse-factory] openSUSE-11.0-Alpha0-KDE-x86_64 upgrade and a laptop encounter

I booted from the CD and chose upgrade. My Acer 1501LCe laptop was already at 11.0-Alpha0 just needed the latest from Factory. * Got as far as the upgrade summary, then noticed one repo was not what was required. * Rebooted and copied across the repo from another x86_64 box. * Rebooted, but only got as far as selecting the Factory repos when suddenly the fan really revved up and the laptop powered off. Left it that way overnight. * New day and another try, same problem from cold. Rebooted with acpi off, couldn't get the network configured - a message saying it couldn't write the config, this time the fan does not speed up and it stays up. With acpi, I am back to the power off situation. * Next I booted from the openSUSE-10.3-GM-KDE-x86_64 CD and upgraded from Factory, ending up with /etc/SuSE-release saying 10.3. "zypper dup" and dealing with a few dependency problems around gnome-keyring and finally ended up at 11.0-Alpha0. * I have one remaining problem on all 11.0 Alpha0 boxen and that is with YaST (bug #350809 refers) - if a dependency problem arises, I get a tree view with no way of selecting any of the actions needed to resolve the conflict and the only way is to CANCEL and mark the package as KEEP. Selecting a new repository, it doesn't change to it until you click on another one. Nice GUI, shame about the disfunctionality, but guess it will come right one day. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... [opensuse-factory] X broke in 10.3!

I have an HP Compaq nc6220 laptop display resolution 1400x1050. Intel GMA900 graphics. I praised SuSE always in previous releases because it was the only distribution that correctly supported the resolution out of the box with no hacks needed. Now in 10.3 it broke. To make the resolution work each time I reload x server I need to use RandR to set the resolution. It defaults to 1152x786 58hz. When I run SaX test it also says "Screen (0) 1152 x 786" however everything is configured right. In particular it does not contain the patch 346872 to libzypp, although that patch is in the current libzypp package *outside* of installation-images. What's up with installation-images on ppc? [opensuse-factory] Misleading zypper error message

Hello, A recent zypper dup removed the gpg2 package from my system (I have no idea why). [opensuse-factory] X broke in 10.3?

I have an HP Compaq nc6220 laptop display resolution 1400x1050. Intel GMA900 graphics. I praised SuSE always in previous releases because it was the only distribution that correctly supported the resolution out of the box with no hacks needed. Now in 10.3 it broke. To make the resolution work each time I reload x server I need to use RandR to set the resolution. It defaults to 1152x786 58hz. When I run SaX test it also says "Screen (0) 1152 x 786" however everything is configured right.
