We have received bugreports that our current installer does not handle the FACTORY ftp tree correctly and installs packages for other platforms. Size of the 6 CD version

How large will the 6 CD version be in total? I asume (hope) that the 6th CD is in the same layout as the other 5. The reason I am wondering about the above two, is so that people can use makeSUSEdvd (or any other means) and burn a DVD from either CD1-6 or from the downloadable DVD + CD 6. houghi -- Nutze die zeit. Partitions mounted in /media, data directories off /

Hi, I noticed with Beta4 that my partitions outside my fstab are automatically mounted inside the /media folder. I also notice that there appears to be several /data[x] directories, I think these existed in previous versions. I was hoping someone could give me a few details about these, specifically answers to these questions: 1. Do the mounted /media/disk[x] folders roughly correspond (the [x] appears to be numbered differently) to /data[x]? 2. If so, is there a reason for both to be there? 3. Even though I couldn't get it to install from anything other than CD1, I got a base system with X11 and FVWM. Although X11 runs fine on Virtual PC for Windows, I get an error on the Mac version (dlopen: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libpcidata.so: undefined symbol: SetupPciIds), so I just use vncserver running inside the virtual machine, which would probably work for VMware as well. From this base install, I was able to run yast to install more software (BTW, the beta 4 warning about leaving CD1 in the drive applies to any time you go to add software--when I started yast with a different CD in the drive, it didn't see any packages). Here's what I did; I imagine the same thing would work during the install: When I got the first error about the CD (I think it was some kind of media error), I switched over to another terminal, and looked in /var/log/YaST2/y2log. That's where you can find where it's trying to mount the CD (for example, /var/adm/mount/AP_0x0000000). What worked for me is doing "mount /dev/hdc /var/adm/mount/AP_0x00000007", clicking OK in the CD dialog, and then umounting /dev/hdc when it asks for the next one, and mounting the new one on that same mount point. The one problem with this approach is minor, but annoying: the count of remaining packages will not be updated as you're installing, so you have no idea how much time is left. - Brian

Hostname not set correctly w/ Traditional Method (networking)

I did a beta4 network installation (ftp). No DHCP server, I have specified the IP with hostip=192..../24 I have set the hostname and the installation completed as usual. But after booting the hostname was "192". Setting it again with YaST fixed it. Does anyone know if this is already in bugzilla? I searched, but still not sure. Wouldn't want to file a dupe.

Serious concerns about font rendering regression

Hi, since 10.0, I noticed a regression with the font rendering quality, especially the kerning is degraded, compared to 9.3. The situation persists with 10.1 (or even got worser). I already filed a report against 10.0: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=133086 only to realize, that I'm soliloquizing. What I've learned from trying to fix the problem myself is that fontconfig and possibly qt3 uses an unofficial API from treetype2 to render stuff, and had a hard time to adjust freetype2 cvs to provide the hooks. Unfortunately, I suffered from some crashes using it (could be unrelated), but not enough time to examine the reasons, thus reverted my local changes that time. For what is worth it, I'm using the "Bitstream Vera Sans" truetype font for all sans serif uses. Getting back on topic, I hadn't compared 10.0 with 10.1, but 9.3 with 10.1, and besides a much worser kerning, bold glyphs are notedly less detailed (zugelaufen). Does nobody noticed this regression and is concerned, too? It could be, that I'm picky in this respect, but font rendering quality is a very important factor in user experience and acceptance. Pete

All Kernel are installed ?

Hello, is this a known Bug ? On my new installation, all three Kernels from the x86 Tree are installed ? Now I have on a old single CPU (no HT) a smp Kernel installed ?? Ralink rt2500 not autodetected

Ralink rt2500 is not autodetected on oss beta4. I tried to compile rt2500 drivers and it compiles well but the rt2500 module can't be loaded. Hi, I want to reply to a message which was sent to list when I wasn't subscriped to it. So I send my reply now as a new message, I hope it will not break the thread structure to much. Sorry! I'm very pleased for explanation of details in the mail from s.schmidt(a)avm.de about the closed-source driver problem. I can understand that a leading company like AVM can't open source its intellectual property and know-how. I understand that its easier und more flexible to do some functionality in software than in hardware. But what about putting this algorythms in the upgradeable firmware of the devices? Ok, I can understand that current devices are not prepared for doing this, but could this be a solution for future products? Things like fax or modem emulation could be done in the binary firmware of the device an the drivers could be kept simple an open source. You have to open no know-how to public or competitors because it will stay closed in the device's firmware. I'm currently not affected by the disscussion because although am using ISDN as primary net-access, I'm using a Bluefritz USB in combination with Bluefritz AP-X that seemes to work with open-source drivers. All ISDN-related things seemed to be done by firmware and I think this could be a solution for other devices. I've to clearify that I'm not a programmer, hardware designer or ISDN-expert (so I may be completely wrong), I'm just a very pleased user of AVM's devices who's hoping that a solution will be found.
