[opensuse-factory] acpid requires systemd?

Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. Changes to dbus packaging (Some Attention maybe required).

Hi All, For Tumbleweed and ALP we plan to follow Red Hat / Fedora / Debian and move from dbus-daemon to dbus-broker as it has a number of advantages and is what upstream is now focusing on. While one of the goals here is to provide the same user experience there will be a couple of changes that will likely require adjustments in a few packages. 1. tools such as dbus-send and dbus-uuid will no longer be installed by default on all systems (we have many use cases that will simply no longer need them and this follows other distro's). Currently the package dbus-1-tools exists and is required by dbus-1 but that will change maybe to a recommends so if you know your package needs one of these tools you can add the Requires there now, otherwise I plan to go through and look at debian and fedora to try and find any packages that need this requires before it becomes optional for dbus. 2. The symlink from /etc/machine-id to /var/lib/dbus/machine-id will no longer be present on all machines and software should be adapted to use /etc/machine-id from systemd rather then the dbus copy. Again this has already happened for Debian and Fedora so hopefully many upstreams have already adapted to this. I'll outline the plan / timeline below. 1. Currently - dbus-broker has been in the distro for quite some time and the dbus-1 package has already been split up and we are at the point of asking people nicely to start testing (instructions below), myself and at least several other people have already been testing this without issues. 2. In 2-3 weeks if I don't hear of any issues we will update the systemd presets to enable dbus-broker rather then dbus-daemon. 3. Unless someone indicates they really want to keep maintaining dbus-daemon and have good reasons for doing so I will make dbus-daemon uninstallable. 4. Once we have done the work to ensure that as many packages that use dbus-send and other tools require the tools package we will drop the requires for dbus-tools from the dbus package. Instead it will probably move to being a Recommends in one of the patterns so it still ends up on most users machines. x86_64 architecture level requirements, x86-64-v2 for openSUSE Factory

Hi, there's been rumors and confusion about ALP raising the x86_64 architecture level to v3 which requires CPUs with AVX2 support and how this will affect openSUSE Factory. Sofar openSUSE Factory was supposed to be not affected but I think it makes sense to re-consider the current -v1 usage given what other distros are doing. Thus I would propose raising the x86_64 architecture level to x86-64-v2 for openSUSE Factory. v2 requires CMPXCHG16B, [SL]AHF, POPCNT and SSE4_2 (and the predecessor SSE extensions) but not AVX, BMI or FMA. Historically the 32bit multilibs built in the i586 tree kept using i586 in openSUSE Factory while for SLE15 we are using x86-64-v1 there as well given there's no support for Hardware not supporting x86-64 there. This is not a proposal to change that part, so the 32bit port should be unaffected (I notice opensuse.org refers to the 32bit port as i686 though) Comments welcome. Dear Package maintainers and hackers. Below package(s) in openSUSE:Factory have had problems for at least 4 weeks. We tried to send out notifications to the configured bugowner/maintainers of the package(s), but so far no fix has been submitted. This probably means that the maintainer/bugowner did not yet find the time to look into the matter and he/she would certainly appreciate help to get this sorted. - redeclipse: Uninstallable: nothing provides libdiscord-rpc.so()(64bit) needed by redeclipse-2.0.0.x86_64 Unless somebody is stepping up and submitting fixes, the listed package(s) are going to be removed from openSUSE:Factory. Dependency conflict between tlp and power-profiles-daemon

Hi, since about 2 weeks I experience a dependency conflict when trying to update my tumbleweed installation . This is between the packages tlp and power-profiles-daemon. Both are power related , so i assume one of those is obsolete, but I could not find information which is the preferred package or if one is a supposed replacement of the other. Does somebody has any information about this? Thank you Stefan

Git Packaging Workflow Exploration A few colleagues from SUSE, namely the build service team and others like myself are exploring the options on what the best way would be to use Git, rather than the current open Build Service source handling, for storing openSUSE / SLE package sources. This was originally launched under the ALP Workgroup umbrella but for now is timeline wise decoupled from this effort, except that if we would decide to switch, that it would have to happen before the first commercially supported Alp release would be branched off openSUSE Factory. For now, all of this is in the exploration and experimentation phase and no decision in either way has been taken. Meanwhile, we do however feel confident and organized enough to be open to wider feedback. If you're interested in any of the topics please let the work package driver know, or if in any doubt contact me. Here's the current list of work packages and their state: * Exploration of the Git Hosting options (run by me) openSUSE already has some experience with Pagure.io (used by https://code.opensuse.org/ for example) and GitHub (used by various openSUSE projects under https://github.com/openSUSE) as well as some projects also in GitLab (used by a few community efforts as well as SUSE-internally for hosting) so we explored another option named Gitea, which is now available to the community under https://gitea.opensuse.org/. Please note that this is not a production service, and can lose data or disappear at any point in time, it is only being operated in the context of the Git packaging workflow exploration. * Exploration of the history import from the SUSE and openSUSE build service source history (run by Stephan Kulow). Stephan Kulow has managed to import the majority of existing history of packages that landed in released products or in openSUSE Tumbleweed as history into package-git repositories and published under https://gitea.opensuse.org/rpm . Hello openSUSE! To start on a positive note, this deadline does not apply for Community/Leap only changes, which do not require any changes on the SLE side. There, we have time until the Beta code submission deadline next year. So this deadline is really for Leap changes that are otherwise blocked by SLES or generally any update requests to SLES. These requests need to be evaluated (in jira) and moved to engineering, which means to be approved by SLES product and project management. I went through all community requested features in *code-o-o, and so far, all should be processed. Each of Leap 15.5 features touching SLE packages should have linked Jira (done by me). Please reach out to me if I missed your feature. If you have anything last minute, then please report it in code-o-o, provide quick summary (see mdadm update request as an *example) why is the change needed and reach out to me as quickly as possible. Otherwise, PM might not get to evaluate it on time, and it will be tracked as a late feature. Late feature is not a big deal, but it also might simply not be approved later on, especially if it's a more significant change. Keep in mind that 15.5/15 SP5 is expected to be a conservative release. Let's rather be on the safe side, report it early. Leap 15.5 has not yet bugs in *Bugzilla, so checking for any "masked feature request" was quick. Hi everyone, we have mostly focused this week's meeting on how the ALP Desktop is going to look like and how we can dispel fears around flatpaks and containers when it comes to the ALP desktop. tl;dr; Fear not, you will not be forced to download random flatpaks or containers from dockerhub/flathub. We (probably) just change the deliver method, but the packaging workflow will stay the same. long version: Desktop in ALP (topic for next official ALP update at news-o-o) How can we dispell fears of users that we will shove containers & flatpacks down their throats: - we will use flatpak/containers as a distribution format, the packaging model will not change, only the format - the fear is not necessarily flatpaks (probably), but the fear that you'll have to pull everything from flathub/docker hub => stress out that you won't have to pull $randomStuff from the internet, you'll get audited software as you were before Questions that lkocman would ask Yi Fan on the meeting would be: * Some users are concerned that everything on their desktop will run in a container. Can you address these fears? - flatpak/containers just a distribution mechanism, packaging not going to change - ALP is still in flux, nothing set in stone - aim: provide a good desktop for a ALP but don't duplicate work for maintainers (they don't want to ship rpms & containers/flatpak) - possible solution for display manager & lower level things: https://github.com/fcrozat/gdm-container - will allow seamless updates with flatpaks installed on the host * Desktop not being part of PoC, but can we "tentatively" expect it in any snapshot after (Dec, May)? - gdm container makes good progress - good progress with Wayland issues like remote desktop (also upstream involvement) - maybe even have rough prototype in the PoC, will have more info this or next week * I'd really love to see desktop image that you simply dump to disk e.g. with self-install and first-boot wizzard that lets user to configure system. Replace Weight Specific Noto CJK Packages with Variable Fonts

Hi, I have been looking at variable fonts for Noto CJK: https://github.com/googlefonts/noto-cjk/blob/main/Sans/README.md and I noticed that Variable Noto Sans CJK Japanese font actually takes up less space than the Non-Variable CJK Noto Sans Japanese Regular font + Non-Variable CJK Noto Sans Japanese Bold font. As variable fonts encode all weights, this means even if I only just wanted the Regular and Bold weights for Noto Sans CJK Japanese, it would be more space efficient for me to install the variable font. (while I also get the benefit of having many extra weights) So I think we should just replace weight specific Noto CJK packages with Variable fonts, as there is not much point in getting specific weights when the variable fonts are so small. Let me know what you think, Gordon Leung P.S: A part of me wonders if maybe we should even go one step further and not even bother with Language-specific fonts. Instead, only ship the Variable OTC which is roughly the same size as an Language-specific Variable Font anyways.

Tumbleweed dup, zypper ps shows deleted files in use even after reboot

Hi all, I have a Tumbleweed machine which is kept up to date via zypper ref; zypper dup on a regular basis. About 4 or so updates I ago, I noticed that zypper ps shows multiple services using deleted files and needing to be restarted. The above has persisted despite many reboots and about 4 more updates. Using lsof, I do not see the files and services using deleted files that zypper ps keeps reporting. It looks like zypper ps always reports the same set of services using the same set of deleted files after each reboot. Anyone have any ideas why zypper ps would be doing this? As you may or may not be aware, 2.9 is EOL since ansible-core 2.13 got released. What, what? ansible-what? WTF? Basically the ansible package you will install is a package only containing community maintained collections, that were removed from what you know as ansible 2.9. The remaining parts are what is now called ansible-core. This means that collections can be maintained separately, and you do not need to wait for a release of ansible to get a fix in your collection. Having a recent ansible/ansible-core package allows the use of ansible-lint 6.x, which requires ansible-core > 2.12. Add some OOM Killer by default in openSUSE

Hello us! Some distributions have OOM Killer by default. For example, Fedora, Ubuntu (both use systemd-oomd since 34 and 22.04 respectively) and Garuda (nohang) There are next available "killers" : * systemd-oomd (https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd-oomd.service.html) * nohang (https://github.com/hakavlad/nohang) * earlyoom (https://github.com/rfjakob/earlyoom) * oomd (Facebook variant, https://github.com/facebookincubator/oomd) From me : maybe, systemd-oomd will be the best solution. It supports by Red Hat, it is a part of systemd and it has good configuration for desktop/server. I would like not just to find out which is better, but to achieve the addition of a "killer" as default to our favourite distribution :)
