Hi,
I'm trying to send to the list, but the opensuse mailserver rejects my mail as
spam, possibly because of an http url in the mail text.
Does this happen to anyone else?
Cheers
MH

mkfs.btrfs now displays the following message when it is run to create a new filesystem
btrfs-progs v5.17
See http://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org for more information.
NOTE: several default settings have changed in version 5.15, please make sure
this does not affect your deployments:
- DUP for metadata (-m dup)
- enabled no-holes (-O no-holes)
- enabled free-space-tree (-R free-space-tree)
man mkfs.btrfs points you to the section DUP PROFILES ON A SINGLE DEVICE which says:
The mkfs utility will let the user create a filesystem with profiles that write the logical blocks to 2 physical locations. Whether there are really 2 physical copies highly depends on the underlying device type.
For example, a SSD drive can remap the blocks internally to a single copy--thus deduplicating them. This negates the purpose of increased redundancy and just wastes filesystem space without providing the expected level of redundancy.
The duplicated data/metadata may still be useful to statistically improve the chances on a device that might perform some internal optimizations. The actual details are not usually disclosed by vendors. For example we could expect that not all blocks get deduplicated. This will provide a non-zero probability of recovery compared to a zero chance if the single profile‚ is used. The user should make the tradeoff‚ decision. The deduplication in SSDs is thought to be widely available so the reason behind the mkfs default is to not give a false‚ sense of redundancy.
As another example, the widely used USB flash or SD cards use a translation layer between the logical and physical view of the device. The data lifetime may be affected by frequent plugging. The memory cells could get damaged, hopefully not destroying both copies of particular data in case of DUP.
The wear levelling techniques can also lead to reduced redundancy even if the device does not do any deduplication. The controllers may put data written in a short timespan into the same physical storage unit (cell, block‚ etc). In case this unit dies, both copies are lost. BTRFS does not add any artificial delay between metadata writes.
The traditional rotational hard drives usually fail at the sector level.
In any case, a device that starts to misbehave and repairs from the DUP copy should be replaced! DUP is not backup.
When I initially installed my TW system btrfs created the filesystem on a single SSD as follows:
data single
metadata single
system single
If I now use mkfs.btrfs on a new single SSD the btrfs filesystem is created as follows:
data single
metadata DUP
system DUP
In the man page the one statement that caught my attention was
"The deduplication in SSDs is thought to be widely available so the reason behind the mkfs default is to not give a false‚ sense of redundancy."
It seems like that man page information was written to explain why it originally created data/metadata/system all as single on a single SSD file system and
was not updated to reflect that it is now using DUP for metadata and system.
So what is the recommendation now, should we convert single SSD installs to use DUP for metadata and system and then do I assume run balance or should we leave them as single?
Thanks!

Version update (20.0 -> 21.0)
- Update to version 21.0
* New help viewer implementation, which includes DocBook files
in the resources. This avoids using an external browser, which
did not work with all installation directories on Ubuntu 21.10
because Firefox and Chromium have restricted access to local
files, or using WebView, which is not supported on all Linux
architectures or in Qt 6.0/6.1.
* Fixed visibility of labels on Callisto 1x1-piece in dark theme.
* Fixed rendering issues on Android with Qt 6.3.0.

Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,
This week, we released 6 snapshots. One snapshot hit reached the
(negative) record of most failed tests in one run. The issue was simply
that YaST was unable to start, which for rather obvious reasons impacts
almost all tests. This could swiftly be corrected and the following
snapshot already worked again. The 6 published snapshots were 0512,
0513, 0515, 0516, 0517, and 0518.
The main changes included in those snapshots are:
* KDE Gear 22.04.1
* KDE Frameworks 5.94.0
* GStreamer 1.20.2
* Linux kernel 5.17.7
* PostgreSQL 14.3
* bind 9.18.2
* NetworkManager 1.38.0: NOTE: Users upgrading with –no-recommends or
recommends disabled in the zypp config, might lose wifi connection.
Install NetworkManager-wifi (that specific split is under review in
Bugzilla)
The main changes being worked on in Stagings are currently:
* Setting build flags to FORTIFY_SOURCE=3 (starting from snapshot
0519). No full rebuild will be done for this, the packages will get
that feature on their next natural rebuild
* Perl 5.34.1
* Linux kernel 5.17.9
* Mozilla Firefox 101
* Mesa 22.1.0
* Python 3.10 as the default interpreter
Cheers,
Dominique
Hello openSUSE!
now when Leap 15.4 RC and Leap Micro 5.2 GA announcements are settled
let's go now for something completely different.
I'd like to invite you to a newly formed Community Work Group (or CWG)
around the new *Adaptable Linux Platform
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:ALP/Workgroups/Community
We'll initially focus on transparency during ALP planning, prototyping,
and related public communication, opensuse infra readiness . There are
topics where we can already start working right now. The first desktop
*workshop has shown us that we need to focus on areas such as single
place for documentation, our "signature" look and feel, brand
recognition, event calendar, etc.
We will to turn feedback from the workshop into action items and ensure
we have WG members working on them.
We have a big opportunity in this regard since unlike SLES 15 , ALP is
going to (and already being *prototyped) be built in OBS by default.
If you're interested then please tell us which one of existing weekly
community weekly slots (Tuesday/Thursday) should be used for regular
CWG meetups https://doodle.com/meeting/organize/id/b68562Ve

Hello us!
I translate some strings in Weplate of page get.opensuse.org.
But no languages other than English are available in Leap and Leap Micro pages.
(other download pages contains languages)
I open bug report (https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1199541).
But I think, the selected section (Documentation) is wrong.
I can't decide, which component is correct for this bug.
Which section do I need to choose?
Or, maybe, I need to write somewhere else?
