Request for a free implementation of aptX be added

This is taken from request 905123 (https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/905123) to add libfreeaptx to openSUSE multimedia:libs. I also created bug report 1188146 (https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1188146) regarding this, though I've been informed that this mailing list is more appropriate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A free implementation of aptX is missing from openSUSE. This can be installed through Packman as described in (https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Installing_codecs_from_Packman_repositories) to, for example, install pipewire with support for aptX over bluetooth with libopenaptx 0.2.0. However, I'd like to add aptX to openSUSE if possible. This will require evaluation from SUSE's legal team (I am not a lawyer!). Additionally, I am new to this sort of thing so forgive any ignorance or lack of proper procedure. libfreeaptx has been forked from libopenaptx 0.2.0 which itself was based on ffmpeg 4.0. libopenaptx was updated to 0.2.1 to change its license from LGPL2.1+ to GPL3+ with an additional restriction: it may not be used by members of Freedesktop or Collabora, as well as preventing linking with any of their software. This makes libopenaptx >=0.2.1 practically useless as it prevents usage with pipewire going forward. This is due to a past conflict with libopenaptx's developer which can be found at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/merge_requests/227 Freedesktop made a statement about this here: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/merge_requests/664 Here are some relevant sections from that statement. "... The original work came from ffmpeg under the LGPL v2.1, to which third parties may not add additional restrictions (per sections 2 and 7 of the LGPL v2.1), so LGPLv2.1 + may-not-use restrictions are not permissible without the explicit consent of the original copyright holder. The upgrade to LGPL v3.0 without explicit consent from the original copyright holder is in itself permissible through the upgrade terms of the LGPL, however the additional restrictions imposed again conflict with sections 7 and 10 of the GPLv3 (as the base of the LGPLv3, with those sections not being invalidated by the additional LGPLv3 text). ... Regardless of the declared license having no legal validity, the LGPL's explicit provision in both v2.1 and v3.0 for such additional restrictions to be stripped, and the low likelihood of it ever being used together with PipeWire as its licensing terms would not be acceptable to any distribution, enforcing a version check seems like the safest way to ensure complete legal clarity, not put users or downstreams in any jeopardy, and comply with the author's stated wishes for v0.2.1 and above to not be used by PipeWire." If this is true, then potentially libopenaptx >= 0.2.1 may be used instead of libfreeaptx (though I do want to upset libopenaptx's developer regardless of legality). Debian is shipping libopenaptx 0.2.0 (pre-license change) in testing/bullseye. Aside from reaching a conclusion on proper licensure there is also a matter regarding patents that must be reviewed. aptX and aptX HD (supported by libfreeaptx and libopenaptx) were previously covered under patents EP0398973B1 (https://worldwide.espacenet.com/patent/search/family/010631689/publication/…) and US9398620B1 (https://worldwide.espacenet.com/patent/search/family/056381853/publication/…) respectively. I believe these patents have been a roadblock for getting aptX including with openSUSE in the past. However, the patents are now expired. Again, I am not a lawyer. SUSE's legal team needs to evaluate this. I realize this may be an endeavor for adding just this one package, but I believe improving openSUSE's out-of-the-box experience with bluetooth audio devices will add value to openSUSE for users with audio oriented use cases (such as myself).

New Build announcements missing?

The last build announcement was for 20210703. Since the builds 20210704 and 20210706 have been published but there was not a corresponding "New Tumbleweed snapshot 202107xx release!" announcement. Is there a problem with those builds so they were not announced or is there just a problem with the process which generates the annoucements?

Dear Package maintainers and hackers. Below package(s) in openSUSE:Factory have been failing to build for at least 4 weeks. We tried to send out notifications to the configured bugowner/maintainers of the package(s), but so far no fix has been submitted. This probably means that the maintainer/bugowner did not yet find the time to look into the matter and he/she would certainly appreciate help to get this sorted. - filemanager-actions - python-Flask-Admin - python-Flask-Security-Too - python-Flask-WTF - python-flask-peewee - python-python3-saml - python-wtf-peewee Unless somebody is stepping up and submitting fixes, the listed package(s) are going to be removed from openSUSE:Factory. In order to catch build failures, we've had to change so many items in the project config (e.g. suse_version macro etc.) and meta pacakge version(eg. gcc -> gcc10, ruby -> ruby2.7, etc.), plus in roder to have Factory's version to be buildable, more new dependencies has been added, that it might not be applicable for Frontrunner any more. lkocman: perhaps talk to Adrian or Dirk about what hinders us from using Frontrunner. lkocman: schedule meeting for this week. Adrian is on FTO next week, lkocman in two weeks from now. ## Guillaume - Arm OBS: New Arm hardware is in place. 32-bit supports only in user-space, so aarch64 kernel is used. Still some problems to build 32-bit images. Dimstar: all images are currently failing to build for armv6/7 Dirk: can we undo this for factory so we can unblock openqa publishing? Adrian: it's not only kiwi image build, we'd have to have additional repository enabled. I made some progress since yesterday evening. It's not only a build topic, we have same problems on runtime as well. Dirk: armv7 has armv7 kernel. We would not run this on new hardware at all, so this (running armv7 distro on newer HW) would not be a supported scenario. Blender 2.93 for Factory

Hi, while I received not that much feedback for Blender in the past, I would like to give you a heads up on the current state. The build of Blender 2.93.1 in home:frispete:blender/blender-293 is almost fine. This is, what changed, and the implications for Factory. * the minimum Python version for 2.93 is 3.9, therefor Leap builds are, ahem, difficult * it requires OpenColorIO 2, which in turn requires 2 new packages (pystring and sphinx_press_theme) * still issues with cycle rendering on (NVidia) GPUs Thanks to the Multi-Python versions support, we would be able to create Leap builds as well, but we need to take the next issue into account as well. OpenColorIO 2.0 has changed a couple of interfaces, that breaks Krita for now, and the new requirements needs to enter Factory. Since pystring (a C++ lib to match interface and behavior of Python string class methods for std::string - https://github.com/imageworks/pystring) is heavily used at Imageworks. Therefore I submitted this package to graphics for now. https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/904237 A better home would be devel:libraries:c_c++, but I would like to push the Blender appearance in Factory as well, and any redirection usually delays that process significantly. python-sphinx_press_theme is submitted to d:l:py: https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/904223 With these deps in place, we're ready for Blender 2.93.1. Apart from the cycles GPU rendering issues, this is all solved in my build, and I would be glad, if you could test this build. home:frispete:blender/blender-293 Cheers, Pete
