==== cups-filters ====
Version update (1.22.5 -> 1.25.0)
- BuildRequire pkgconfig(systemd) instead of systemd: allow OBS to
shortcut the build queues by allowing usage of systemd-mini
- Update to version 1.25.0:
* pdftoijs, pdftoopvp: Removed these deprecated filters
completely as there is no demand for them any more. They also
used unstable, undocumented APIs of Poppler.
* pdftoraster: Changed from using unstable, undocumented APIs of
Poppler to stable, documented ones, to improve maintainability
of this filter, and with it of the cups-filters package.
* libcupsfilters: Added support for color spaces CMY and RGBW
when using filters without PPD file (mainly for development and
debugging, option "print-color-mode" with values "cmy-XX" and
"rgbw-XX" with XX being the number of bits per color).
- Changes from version 1.24.0:
* cups-browsed: Integration of Deepak Patankar's Google Summer of
Code 2018 project with the main goal of clustering different
printers and automatically selecting the destination printers
by job content and option/attribute settings.
* cups-browsed, implicitclass: Support for mixed clusters of
remote CUPS queues and IPP network printers. For this PPD files
of remote CUPS queues are generated by cups-browsed based on
IPP queries, as for native IPP printers, the number of jobs for
load balancing is polled in a way that it works also with
native IPP printers, the implicitclass backend sends jobs
directly to the printer instead of re-queueing them via CUPS.
* cups-browsed: Merge IPP attributes of several printers to
combined attributes for the cluster to generate the cluster's
PPD file, including PPD constraints for option combinations not
fulfillable by any of the member printers, and finding
reasonable, non-conflicting default settings.
* cups-browsed: Selection algorithm for the destination printer
for a job sent to the cluster. Based on the job settings
requested such as page size, media type, print quality, the
best most suitable printer in the cluster for the job will be
selected.
* cups-browsed, implicitclass: Filter jobs to clusters already
locally. Due to the fact that a cluster's member printers are
not exclusively non-raw CUPS queues with the complete filtering
framework on the remote server, but also native IPP printers,
we need to support generic driverless printers as destination.
So we cannot pass on the input data unfiltered but need to
filter locally. We let the cluster's PPD file emulate a PDF
printer, letting the local CUPS queue of the cluster run
pdftopdf and any pre-filters to turn the input into PDF and we
let the implicitclass backend turn PDF into a format understood
by the destination printer, supporting the 4 formats of
driverless IPP printing: PDF, PWG Raster, Apple Raster, PCLm.
- Drop libpoppler-cpp0, libpoppler-devel and libpoppler-glib-devel
BuildRequires.
- Add pkgconfig(poppler-cpp) BuildRequires following upstream
changes.
- Update to version 1.23.0:
* This release adds support for the "print-scaling" IPP attribute
and has the code for the support of MuPDF as PDF renderer
vastly simplified.
* pdftops, mupdftoraster: Let pdftops call mutool directly and so
that it directly outputs PostScript, eliminating the need to
call the mupdftoraster and rastertops filters.
* mupdftoraster: Reduced the use of temporary files from 3 to
just one.
* imagetopdf, imagetoraster, pdftopdf: Add support for
print-scaling option.
- Changes from version 1.22.6:
* Bug fix release, to address a further issue of cups-browsed
removing user-created print queues, to make
grayscale/monochrome PostScript jobs of colored input file
actually output grayscale/monochrome files, to fix several bugs
when using MuPDF as PDF renderer, and to silence compiler
warnings.

Hi All,
Just a general reminder that over the coming months there will be
several decisions the openSUSE project will be making ranging from name
and branding / logo through to the creation of a foundation, such issues
will be decided via membership votes.
Anyone who contributes to openSUSE is able to apply for membership
following the process listed at [1]. My guess is we have a number of
contributors who have never applied for membership because voting for
the board doesn't seem important to them, where as some of these other
issues may be. If that is the case, now would be a great time to apply
so that we don't flood the membership committee so much that it holds up
the votes.
Cheers
Simon

Dear hackers and users,
this is a courtesy message to let you know that the following packages
will receive delete requests shortly, as they failed to build for > 3
months without any feedback from the maintainers.
If there is a package in the list which you feel strongly for, please
speak up && (find a maintainer || take maintainership)
The packages will now enter the removal process. Of course, the package
can be re-added at any time in the future if the problems associated to
it are being settled.
The packages in question are: (all in openSUSE:Factory)
* python-veusz
* idutils
+ global (depends on idutilS)
* openlmi-providers
+ openlmi-networking
* pam_passwdqc
* lbzip2
* dc3dd
* crosstool-ng
* python3-efl
+ econnman
+ epymc
+ lekha
* perf
* hedgewars
The ones marked as + FOO are packages depending on the one it's listed
under. They would possibly not fail on their own)
Cheers

[opensuse-factory] Zypper, btrfs, large updates and how to better handle the possibility of running out of disk space
by Michael Pujos 17 Jun '19
by Michael Pujos 17 Jun '19
17 Jun '19
My system uses a 40 GB btrfs root partition.
I just updated to 20190612 and it did not went totally smooth.
zypper dup reported 3200 packages were to be updated.
I checked the available space with (I have it bound to an alias):
/usr/sbin/btrfs fi usage / 2>/dev/null | grep "Free (estimated)"
it reported 7.5GB free.
Thus I thought it should be sufficient for that massive update. I was wrong:
Zypper downloaded all packages fine then proceeded to install them and
midway there were a bunch
of out of disk space errors. Then it halted with a prompt to
retry/abort/etc.
I deleted the oldest snapshot taking a lot of space (several GB) with
'snapper delete', then resumed and it finished without error.
My question is how this situation could be avoided in the first place ?
Having a system with no disk space left is always dangerous as
the system can behave unpredictably: this also happened to me a few days
ago after installing a bunch of individual packages, then
suddenly journalctld and syslogd went berserk attempting to repeatedly
write to disk. I could recover the situation deleting a snapshot but the
situation
was a bit stressful because it seemed the system could become
unresponsive and unusuable at any time (bash complained, etc).
So I think it would be able to have 2 things:
- having zypper check it has enough space to perform the full update and
at least emit a warning. This is mostly important for 'zypper dup'.
Checking required space might be tricky
- having some facility at the system level that warn user of running out
of disk space
Also, I think a 40GB partition is not big enough to handle these super
large updates. If you have to delete snapshots manually preventively,
there's a size problem.
I understand these massive updates are rare, but still.

Yes exactly. This would be good in general and especially for users that
run out of disk space and do not know about 'snapper delete' or how to
recover the situation.

[opensuse-factory] Proposal for openSUSE zypper download cache support
by Hans-Peter Jansen 17 Jun '19
by Hans-Peter Jansen 17 Jun '19
17 Jun '19
Hi,
in the light of current events, I would like to start to discuss a scheme for
improving the regular Tumbleweed upgrade performance.
Given the following scenario: a local LAN with a couple of Tumbleweed
installations, and optionally a server.
I) a modification of the zypper download lib to honor an environment variable,
e.g. ZYPPERCACHE, and relaying the downloads to that system (server), if set
II) a zypper caching server, that uses the zypper download lib, but implicitly
keeps the downloads for later reuse.
If ZYPPERCACHE is set and reachable, all files must be fetched though it.
If ZYPPERCACHE is set and not reachable, zypper may (interactively) warn about
it, and proceed as usual.
Such a scheme would greatly relieve the load on the public infrastructure, and
improve the upgrade performance of local systems significantly.
I'm using a shared /var/cache/zypp/packages scheme already, that improves the
situation already, but suffers from a couple of issues: two zypper processes
are treading on each others feet, the repo definitions have to be synced
carefully, it's hacky, etc...
I think, that his great product deserves a decent solution to this problem. If
it works well, other openSUSE distributions may profit as well.
Cheers,
Pete

Dear Digikam users.
Is the current digikam v6.1.0 running on your tumbleweed system?
For me, digikam is eating all memory. At about 88% memory usage my
system freezes. The mouse only reacts after minutes. The keyboard LEDs
do not switch on/off any more. Strangely, no OOM killer kills the
digikam process that consumes about 103% cpu until the memory is 88%
where the cpu goes to about 50%. I then need to hard reset the computer.
Started in a Konsole, digikam.general is reporting repeatedly: "Detected
change, triggering rescan of "/my/picture/folder/"
Then, there are some pictures from a Photoshop book with .psd extension
that "digikam.dimg.qimage: Can not load"
Some weeks ago digikam was working fine.
I suspect a digikam bug or that I got some digikam components mixed from
different repos (had such a problem some years ago) kde:extra or
something. How can I check that all digikam components are from just one
repo?
Thank you,
Michael

[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed - Review of the week 2019/24
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 14 Jun '19
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 14 Jun '19
14 Jun '19
Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers
The last week has been rather ‘slow’ when it comes to snapshots
published. Unfortunately, OBS had a small bug last Friday, which was
fixed rather quickly, but its effects were devastating on the staging
process and on the product builds. It took us several iterations of
identifying missing binaries and rebuilding the missing bits and
pieces. For this reason, I can only report about two snapshots
published this week *0607 and 0712) – and for this, I’m even cheating
and including the latest snapshot which is only just in progress of
being distributed to mirrors.
The changes included in those two snapshots are:
* gdb 8.3
* libvirt 5.4.0
* KDE Plasma 5.16.0
* LibreOffice 6.2.4.2
* SQLite 3.28.0
The list of major changes in Staging areas did not change drastically –
and the main topics worked on are still:
* KDE Applications 19.04.2
* LLVM 8.0
* openssl 1.1.1c
* Texlive 2019
* Qt 5.13
* swig 4.0
* cmake 3.14
Cheers,
Dominique

These is this month's compression shootout.
News:
* Fedora announced intent to switch rpms to Zstd compression; the reported
timings on the proposal paper
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Switch_RPMs_to_zstd_compression
suggest to me that the measurement was not done with due statistical care
with regard to CPU thermal throttling characteristics.
* Earlier this year Ubuntu switched kernel and initramfs to lz4
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2018-March/040258.html
* In both of these instances, decompression time is the hot new topic.
(Something the previous openSUSE report,
https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2019-05/msg00344.html
did not analyze)
Change in methods:
* I cut the testset to just x86_64 rpms (dropping *.noarch.rpm) to cut
time. The proportion of executables over data should be higher now.
* Ran xz only from -1..-5; we all know its progression characteristics
(-6..-9) from older tests.
* Added brotli, all levels
New results:
* http://paste.opensuse.org/view/97377621 - compression
* http://paste.opensuse.org/view/80494192 - decompression
* http://inai.de/files/openSUSE-compression-201906.ods - details
Interpretation:
* The ups and downs in the decompression times are read as jitter;
they often complete in less than a minute.
* For a particular algorithm, decompression speed is unaffected by chosen
compression level. This means the choice of level is only influenced
by the desired compression-time characteristics.
* zstd decompression is decidedly faster than xz (~4.3x).
Fedora is making sensible choices.
* lz4 decompression is 15% slower than zstd.
Ubuntu is making suboptimal choices again.
* Brotli: only marginally better in the low-to-medium-level
compression than zstd. Equally weak in decomp like lz4.
That's probably the reasons it was not worth supporting in rpm.
* Fedora's plan to replace xz-2 with zstd-18 will at least
double their compression times.
* Replacing openSUSE's xz-5 with zstd-18 gives the decompression benefit,
no improvement in compression time and a slight space increase.
* xz-5 to zstd-10 would also give a 7x compression time saving
with a slight more space increase. (23.6->27.9G)
So with that, I propose changing openSUSE to zstd-10 that will give people
time back they're waiting for.. for the computer. xkcd.com/303 .
The problem is that even though we have a suitable version of rpm since
Dec 2017, the maintainer did not enable zstd so the "compatibility time"
accumulated since was unfortunately wasted.
