Hi,
Jokes aside the kernel in 15.1 switched to CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY
a month ago. That setting is supposed to find a better balance
between desktop performance and throughput on servers.
So I wonder if beta testers of 15.1 noticed any difference?
Was there a change in power consumption for example?
Don't wait upgrading to 15.1 until the release, there are only a few
weeks left to get fixes in!

Version update (1.2.3 -> 1.2.4)
Subpackages: libflatpak0 typelib-1_0-Flatpak-1_0
- Update to verson 1.2.4 (CVE-2019-10063):
+ It has been discovered that the previous fix for CVE-2017-5226,
which uses seccomp to prevent sandboxed apps from using the
(dangerous) TIOCSTI ioctl was only incomplete on 64bit arches.
This is now fixed.
+ seccomp: Only compare the low 32bit of the TIOCSTI ioctl args.
+ Support multiple nvidia cards on the machine
+ Fix support for systems where XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is /var/run which
is a symlink like gentoo.
+ Fix potential crash when updating apps.
+ flatpak list --arch now works correctly again.
+ Updated translations.
==== glib-networking ====
Version update (2.58.0 -> 2.60.0.1)
Subpackages: glib-networking-lang
- Update to version 2.60.0.1:
+ Fix build with OpenSSL pkg-config unavailable.
- Update to version 2.60.0:
+ This is the first stable release featuring the new OpenSSL
backend. Please be advised that this new backend is still
experimental and known to not work on some systems, including
Debian. Linux distributions are encouraged to stick to the
default build options, where OpenSSL is not yet enabled.
+ Fix build with GnuTLS disabled.
- Update to version 2.59.92:
+ GnuTLS: reject sync operations during handshake to avoid
deadlocks.
+ Temporarily disable DTLS and OpenSSL tests due to bugs.
- Update to version 2.59.91:
+ Update OpenSSL SSL struct when certificate is changed.
+ Fix tests build when GnuTLS is disabled.
+ Remove Fedora-specific PROFILE=SYSTEM default cipher list.
+ Fix some problems with the connection tests.
- Update to version 2.59.90:
+ This release adds an OpenSSL backend, obsoleting the
glib-openssl project.
+ The OpenSSL backend seems to be mature, though it is less
well-tested for desktop usage than the GnuTLS backend. It will
remain disabled by default at build time due to the
GPL-incompatible nature of the OpenSSL license -- and the
GPLv2-incompatible nature of the Apache license that will be
used by future versions of OpenSSL -- and because the GnuTLS
backend is sufficient for Linux distros.
+ Use the OpenSSL backend if you are building an embedded system
where (GPLv2+ or LGPLv3+) dependencies are unacceptable (e.g.
nettle or GMP, both dependencies of GnuTLS) and you are OK with
the GPL-incompatible OpenSSL license. If the OpenSSL backend is
enabled at build time, you should probably disable build of the
GnuTLS backend, or it will take precedence over the OpenSSL
backend at runtime.
- Update to version 2.59.2:
+ Add support for application layer protocol negotiation.
- Update to version 2.59.1:
+ This release removes the gnutls-pkcs11 backend, which was
disabled in 2.57.2, due to lack of any feedback whatsoever
regarding its disablement. If you think it is still useful to
you, given that the normal gnutls backend now supports PKCS#11,
speak up now.
+ This release also includes several changes to properly support
TLS 1.3.
+ Other changes:
- Perform certificate verification during, not after, TLS
handshake.
- Dramatically improve the reliability of the non-DTLS tests.
(DTLS is still having problems).
- Regenerate test certificates to prepare for OpenSSL support.
- Several meson build system improvements to prepare for
OpenSSL support.
==== gpg2 ====
Version update (2.2.14 -> 2.2.15)
Subpackages: gpg2-lang

gpg-wks-client.
==== graphene ====
Version update (1.8.2 -> 1.8.6)
- Update to version 1.8.6:
+ Bug fixes, bug fixes everywhere! Also: documentation changes to
clarify what we do behind the veil of the various matrix
multiplication functions. Hopefully, this should help people
using Graphene especially when it comes to integration with
other libraries.
+ Fix matrix multiplication when the result matrix is also one of
the operands.
+ Fix check when converting a 4x4 matrix into an affine
transformation matrix.
+ Fix interpolation between matrices with a perspective
component.
+ Documentation fixes for matrix/matrix and matrix/vector
multiplication operators.
- Changes from version 1.8.4:
+ Mostly a bug fixing release, with an especially glaring bug fix
in the point transformation function of graphene_matrix_t that
was found thanks to GTK 4. Now the function is covered by the
test suite, so it should not regress.
+ Another major fix is the ensuring that we have a description of
the SIMD types through introspection, which means that language
bindings can finally know how big every other structure using
them is. The SIMD API is still not available through
introspection, as it's a pure C convenience.
+ Require Meson ? 0.48.0.
+ Fix matrix/point transformation.
+ Build fixes for MSVC.
+ Introspection fixes for bool.
+ Fix the InitOnce checks on Windows.
+ Correctly parse SIMD types for introspection.
+ Build fixes for the pkg-config file.
+ Documentation fixes:
- Clarify matrix/vector/point multiplication.
- Clarify plane description.
- Clarify the units for the matrix skew factors.
- Document use of graphene-gobject with Meson.

- Only Recommend instead of require AppStream: Allow distros like
SLE not to ship AppStream as part of the main channel, but only
in PK for example. SLE only ships GNOME Software, which does not
rely on the xapian database, so we don't need this cache being
refreshed. On SLE+PH or openSUSE, we also have KDE Discover,
where xapian becomes a topic (boo#1125898).

Hi list,
I thought about compressing my root partition with zstd, with which I've
had a good experience so far in terms of the speed vs size tradeoff.
Since I used the default partition layout, /boot/ is part of / and needs
to be readable by GRUB. Unfortunately GRUB stable cannot yet read zstd
compressed btrfs partitions (support has been added in git already:
https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/grub.git/commit/?id=386128648606a3aa6ae71…).
My question is: is it safe to compress other subvolumes of /, like /var?
And would it be safe to put /boot/ into an uncompressed subvolume and
compress everything else (including /)?
Thanks in advance for any pointers/suggestions,
Dan

memory accesses depending on secret data. This applies both to
the bignum calculations, which now use GMP's mpn_sec_* family
of functions, and the processing of PKCS#1 padding needed for
RSA decryption.
* Changes in behavior:
The functions rsa_decrypt and rsa_decrypt_tr may now clobber
all of the provided message buffer, independent of the
actual message length. They are side-channel silent, in that
branches and memory accesses don't depend on the validity or
length of the message. Side-channel leakage from the
caller's use of length and return value may still provide an
oracle useable for a Bleichenbacher-style chosen ciphertext
attack. Which is why the new function rsa_sec_decrypt is
recommended.
* New features:
A new function rsa_sec_decrypt.
* Bug fixes:
- Fix bug in pkcs1-conv, missing break statements in the
parsing of PEM input files.
- Fix link error on the pss-mgf1-test test, affecting builds
without public key support.

==== sqlite3 ====
Version update (3.23.1 -> 3.27.2)
Subpackages: libsqlite3-0
- CVE-2018-20346, bsc#1119687: Upgrade to the most recent version
to fix a remote code execution vulnerability in FTS3 (Magellan).
- Drop sqlite-fts5-link.patch and do it in the spec file instead.
- Version 3.27.2:
* Add the VACUUM INTO command
* Issue an SQLITE_WARNING message on the error log if a
double-quoted string literal is used
* Add the remove_diacritics=2 option to FTS3 and FTS5.
* Add the SQLITE_PREPARE_NO_VTAB option to sqlite3_prepare_v3().
Use that option to prevent circular references to shadow tables
from causing resource leaks.
* Enhancements to the sqlite3_deserialize() interface
* Enhancements to the CLI, mostly to support testing and debugging
of the SQLite library itself
* Increased robustness against malicious SQL that is run against
a maliciously corrupted database
- Version 3.26.0:
* Optimization: When doing an UPDATE on a table with indexes on
expressions, do not update the expression indexes if they do
not refer to any of the columns of the table being updated.
* Allow the xBestIndex() method of virtual table implementations
to return SQLITE_CONSTRAINT to indicate that the proposed query
plan is unusable and should not be given further consideration.
* Added the SQLITE_DBCONFIG_DEFENSIVE option which disables the
ability to create corrupt database files using ordinary SQL.
* Added support for read-only shadow tables when the
SQLITE_DBCONFIG_DEFENSIVE option is enabled.
* Added the PRAGMA legacy_alter_table command, which if enabled
causes the ALTER TABLE command to behave like older version of
SQLite (prior to version 3.25.0) for compatibility.
* Added PRAGMA table_xinfo that works just like PRAGMA table_info
except that it also shows hidden columns in virtual tables.
* Added the explain virtual table as a run-time loadable
extension.
* Add a limit counter to the query planner to prevent excessive
sqlite3_prepare() times for certain pathological SQL inputs.
* Added support for the sqlite3_normalized_sql() interface, when
compiling with SQLITE_ENABLE_NORMALIZE.
* Enhanced triggers so that they can use table-valued functions
that exist in schemas other than the schema where the trigger
is defined.
* Improvements to the ".help" command in the CLI.
* The SQLITE_HISTORY environment variable, if it exists,
specifies the name of the command-line editing history file.
* The --deserialize option associated with opening a new database
in the CLI cause the database file to be read into memory and
accessed using the sqlite3_deserialize() API. This simplifies
running tests on a database without modifying the file on disk.
- Version 3.25.2:
* Add the PRAGMA legacy_alter_table=ON command that causes the
"ALTER TABLE RENAME" command to behave as in 3.24.0 and earlier
* Fix issue with some expressions with windows functions in views
- Version 3.25.1:
* Avoid false-positive error checks on ALTER TABLE
* Further ORDER BY LIMIT optimization fixes for window functions
- Version 3.25.0:
* Add support for window functions
* Add support for renaming columns within a table
* Query optimizer improvements
* slightly better concurrency in multi-threaded environments
* The ORDER BY LIMIT optimization might have caused an infinite
loop in the byte code of the prepared statement under very
obscure circumstances, due to a confluence of minor defects in
the query optimizer
- Version 3.24.0:
* Add support for PostgreSQL-style UPSERT
* Add support for auxiliary columns in r-tree tables
* Add C-language APIs for discovering SQL keywords used by SQLite
* Add C-language APIs for dynamic strings based on sqlite3_str
* Enhance ALTER TABLE so that it recognizes "true" and "false" as
valid arguments to DEFAULT
* Add the sorter-reference optimization as a compile-time option
* Improve the format of the EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN raw output, so that
it gives better information about the query plan and about the
relationships between the various components of the plan
* Added the SQLITE_DBCONFIG_RESET_DATABASE option to the
sqlite3_db_config() API.
* Automatically intercept the raw EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN output an
reformat it into an ASCII-art graph.
* Lines that begin with "#" and that are not in the middle of an
SQL statement are interpreted as comments
* Add the --append option to the ".backup" command
* Add the ".dbconfig" command
* various performance improvements
* various bug fixes
==== tiff ====

Hello,
Probably a new bug-report to file but before, I would like to write the
issue I'm facing after latest TW updates
I'm using a Lenovo Z470 laptop which uses the Realtek PCI Ethernet card
and the r8169 kernel module.
When I close the lid my laptop goes in suspend mode and when I lift the
lid it resume correctly but Ethernet card remains in off-mode.
If I close and open the lid again, system resumes completely, including
the Ethernet card.
Note: this issue affects only the Ethernet card and not the WI-Fi card.

[opensuse-factory] Announcing the plans for openSUSE Gaming distribution
by Stasiek Michalski 02 Apr '19
by Stasiek Michalski 02 Apr '19
02 Apr '19
Hi,
There has been some discussion about performance of our distributions
in gaming
specific workflows. While it would be hard to approach every single
game to fix
the abhorent performance due to sloppy steam ports to Linux, and Wine
emulation
performance, we can do better by providing a distribution with tweaked
performance impacting parameters.
What does that entail? The main complaint is that Intel, being a way
more popular
choice for gamers, lags behind AMD on openSUSE distributions. It would
be a step
in right direction if we had kernels specific for vendor, due to large
differences between the ways they choose to build their CPUs. On top of
that,
we should have versions of packages, which avoid any sort of security
if it
impacts performance. All the security flags in GCC, gone, all the fixes
to
Spectre and Meltdown cause major drop in performance, there is no point
to keep
them for this new distribution.
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=spec-melt-8way
Obviously we would need to provide beta drivers for Nvidia GPUs
directly in the
distribution non-oss repos, to rebuild them every time new major kernel
comes
out, so the drivers never stop working properly. On top of that, for
enthusiasts
of AMD GPUs and Intel integrated, we should provide git version of mesa
and
related drivers, after all gaming is so on edge, every improvement
counts.
All of those changes would make openSUSE Gaming distro the most
reputable and
reliable way for gamers to enjoy their games.
But, never forget about bringing some good looking branding along for
the ride:
Logo:
https://i.imgur.com/XFBlEmg.png
Wallpaper (optimized for 32:9 gaming resolution):
https://i.imgur.com/22pHtiY.png
I thought bigger logo might be distracting the main message of the
wallpaper, so
I kept it fairly small and in the corner
Hope you like it!

Hello,
I try to get a recent Tumbleweed running on Espressobin[1]. According to
the wiki page [2] [3] the opensuse u-boot [4] should be chain loaded. To
do that I installed the latest tumbleweed image [5] on a sd card and
added the u-boot.bin to the boot partition. The espressbin starts the
marvell u-boot (U-Boot 2017.03-armada-17.10.1-gaee49fc (Jan 29 2018 -

[opensuse-factory] Renaming the chromium package to chromium-browser and chromium-bsu back to chromium
by Simon Lees 01 Apr '19
by Simon Lees 01 Apr '19
01 Apr '19
Some time long ago back in the dark ages we allowed one of the greatest
travesties of all time take place where buy the chromium name was stolen
away from a humble arcade shooter with space ships and lasers then given
to a big ugly memory sucking corporate browser.
Its clearly in the interest of our users that this issue is fixed
swiftly, I mean who needs a web browser when you can have a space
shooter. Clearly as a project we have our priorities wrong (As does
debian) here is the thread where they made the same mistake
