[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed - Review of the weeks 2018/27 & 28
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 13 Jul '18
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 13 Jul '18
13 Jul '18
Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,
During the last two weeks, there has been a quite constant flow of
Tumbleweed snapshots – despite SUSE folks being occupied with hackweek.
To cut through the case: Weeks 27 & 28 delivered a total of 9 snapshots
(0628, 0629, 0701, 0702, 0703, 0704, 0707, 0709 and 0710)
The relevant updates in overview:
* Linux kernel 4.17.3 & 4.17.4
* bcm43xx-firmware added support for BCM 4356 PCI devices
* KDE Plasma 5.13.2
* fwupdate 11: new support for Lenovo devices
* FFmpeg 4.0.1
* Many yast updates, containing translated keywords
* Mozilla Firefox 61.0
* LibreOffice 6.1.0 (beta2)
* Mesa 18.1.3
* coreutils 8.30
* emacs 26.1
* squid 4.1
The following things are either already in a snapshot work-in-progress
or will hopefully be added soon:
* Linux kernel 4.17.5 (and newer)
* file 5.33: beware: it now detects PI-Executables correctly, no
longer identifies them just as shared objects.
* LibreOffice 6.1.0 final version
* KDE Plasma 5.13.3
* X.Org 1.12 (still needs some love)
* poppler 0.66 (as usual, texlive and cups-filters are the prominent
consumers failing)
* Preparations for Java 11 as the default java compiler
cheers,
Dominique

If I want to run:
svn co https://github.com/liosha/osm2mp osm2mp
on e.g. Leap or also TW, do I have to run the command as root (with sudo) or
do I run it as user?
What would be the consequence running it as user? I suppose, if it is
possible, that I may not work at all. But if it would be restricted to that
specific user it would be O.k.
The whole thing is a converter script in perl that should transform gps data
to a garmin/tomtom etc compatible format.

=== Details ===
==== acpica ====
Version update (20180313 -> 20180629)
- Update to 20180629
Added changelog from mainline, installed into documentation path
- Update to version 20180508
ACPICA kernel-resident subsystem:
* Completed the new (recently deployed) package resolution
mechanism for the Load and LoadTable ASL/AML operators. This
fixes a regression that was introduced in version 20180209
that could result in an AE_AML_INTERNAL exception during the
loading of a dynamic ACPI/AML table (SSDT) that contains
package objects.
iASL Compiler/Disassembler and Tools:
* AcpiDump and AcpiXtract: Implemented support for ACPI tables
larger than 1 MB. This change allows for table offsets within
the acpidump file to be up to 8 characters. These changes are
backwards compatible with existing acpidump files.
version 20180427
ACPICA kernel-resident subsystem:
* Debugger: Added support for Package objects in the "Test
Objects" command. This command walks the entire namespace and
evaluates all named data objects (Integers, Strings, Buffers,
and now Packages).
* Improved error messages for the namespace root node.
Originally, the root was referred to by the confusing string
"\___". This has been replaced by "Namespace Root" for
clarification.
* Fixed a potential infinite loop in the AcpiRsDumpByteList
function. Colin Ian King <colin.king(a)canonical.com>.
iASL Compiler/Disassembler and Tools:
* iASL: Implemented support to detect and flag illegal forward
references. For compatibility with other ACPI implementations,
these references are now illegal at the root level of the DSDT
or SSDTs. Forward references have always been illegal within
control methods. This change should not affect existing
ASL/AML code because of the fact that these references
have always been illegal in the other ACPI implementation.
* iASL: Added error messages for the case where a table OEM ID
and OEM TABLE ID strings are longer than the ACPI-defined length.
Previously, these strings were simply silently truncated.
* iASL: Enhanced the -tc option (which creates an AML hex file
in C, suitable for import into a firmware project):
1) Create a unique name for the table, to simplify use of
multiple SSDTs.
2) Add a protection #ifdef in the file, similar to a .h
header file. With assistance from Sami Mujawar,
sami.mujawar(a)arm.com and Evan Lloyd, evan.lloyd(a)arm.com
* AcpiExec: Added a new option, -df, to disable the local
fault handler. This is useful during debugging, where it may
be desired to drop into a debugger on a fault.
==== icu ====
- Add icu-susevers.diff and disable UTF-8 assumption
[boo#1095425]
==== mtd-utils ====
Version update (2.0.1 -> 2.0.2)
- Update to version 2.0.2:
* libmtd: Add support to access OOB available size
* mkfs.ubifs: Allow root entry in device table
* Fix unit-test header and file paths for out of tree builds
* Fix unit test mockup for oobavail sysfs file
* misc-utils: flash_erase: Fix Jffs2 type flash erase problem
* libmtd_legacy: Fix some function description mismatches
* mtd-utils: ubifs: fix typo in without_lzo definition
* mtd: tests: check erase block count in page test
* mtd: unittests: Stop testing stat() calls
* mtd: unittests: Decode arg size from ioctl request
* mtd: unittests: Use proper unsigned long type for ioctl requests
* mtd: tests: Fix check on ebcnt in nandpagetest
* ubi-utils: ubicrc32: process command line arguments first
* nandbiterrs: Fix erroneous counter increment in for loop body
* jittertest: Use the appropriate versions of abs()
* Mark or fix switch cases that fall through
* mkfs.ubifs: ignore EOPNOTSUPP when listing extended attributes
* misc-utils: initialize "ip" in docfdisk to NULL
* mkfs.ubifs: Apply squash-uids to the root node

Hi all,
I have submitted package-update-indicator to openSUSE:Factory.
https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/621941
p-u-i is the successor of pk-update-icon which is deprecated now.
After it is accepted in Factory and some more tests, I'll update
patterns-xfce accordingly and add Obsoletes:/Provides: to prepare for a
smooth transition from pk-update-icon.
Develproject is X11:xfce
Have fun,

[opensuse-factory] Version mismatch between software.opensuse.org and zypper?
by Gerben Venekamp 09 Jul '18
by Gerben Venekamp 09 Jul '18
09 Jul '18
It seems that the latest Tumbleweed release should provide vagrant version
2.1.1. At least looking at: https://software.opensuse.org/package/vagrant Here
the latest official release for Tumbleweed lists 2.1.1. However, doing a
'zypper se --details vagrant' reveals version 1.9.7. Why am I not seeing
version 2.1.1. with zypper? I'd like to have a more current version. The
absolute latest is strictly not necessary and just a nice to have. However
vagrant version 2 is.
After getting a more up-to-date version of vagrant is getting the vagrant-
libvirt plugin for vagrant itself. It would be great if I don't have to build
that one myself.
Regards,
Gerben

==== coreutils ====
Version update (8.29 -> 8.30)
Subpackages: coreutils-lang
- Update to 8.30:
* Noteworthy changes in release 8.30 (2018-07-01) [stable]
* * Bug fixes
'cp --symlink SRC DST' will again correctly validate DST.
If DST is a regular file and SRC is a symlink to DST,
then cp will no longer allow that operation to clobber DST.
Also with -d, if DST is a symlink, then it can always be replaced,
even if it points to SRC on a separate device.
[bugs introduced with coreutils-8.27]
'cp -n -u' and 'mv -n -u' now consistently ignore the -u option.
Previously, this option combination suffered from race conditions
that caused -u to sometimes override -n.
[bug introduced with coreutils-7.1]
'cp -a --no-preserve=mode' now sets appropriate default permissions
for non regular files like fifos and character device nodes etc.,
and leaves mode bits of existing files unchanged.
Previously it would have set executable bits on created special files,
and set mode bits for existing files as if they had been created.
[bug introduced with coreutils-8.20]
'cp --remove-destination file symlink' now removes the symlink
even if it can't be traversed.
[bug introduced with --remove-destination in fileutils-4.1.1]
ls no longer truncates the abbreviated month names that have a
display width between 6 and 12 inclusive. Previously this would have
output ambiguous months for Arabic or Catalan locales.
'ls -aA' is now equivalent to 'ls -A', since -A now overrides -a.
[bug introduced in coreutils-5.3.0]
'mv -n A B' no longer suffers from a race condition that can
overwrite a simultaneously-created B. This bug fix requires
platform support for the renameat2 or renameatx_np syscalls, found
in recent Linux and macOS kernels. As a side effect, ?mv -n A A?
now silently does nothing if A exists.
[bug introduced with coreutils-7.1]
* * Changes in behavior
'cp --force file symlink' now removes the symlink even if
it is self referential.
ls --color now matches file extensions case insensitively.
* * New features
cp --reflink now supports --reflink=never to enforce a standard copy.
env supports a new -v/--debug option to show verbose information about
each processing step.
env supports a new -S/--split-string=S option to split a single argument
string into multiple arguments. Used to pass multiple arguments in scripts
(shebang lines).
md5sum accepts a new option: --zero (-z) to delimit the output lines with a
NUL instead of a newline character. This also disables file name escaping.
This also applies to sha*sum and b2sum.
rm --preserve-root now supports the --preserve-root=all option to
reject any command line argument that is mounted to a separate file system.
* * Improvements
cut supports line lengths up to the max file size on 32 bit systems.
Previously only offsets up to SIZE_MAX-1 were supported.
stat and tail now know about the "exfs" file system, which is a
version of XFS. stat -f --format=%T now reports the file system type,
and tail -f uses inotify.
wc avoids redundant processing of ASCII text in multibyte locales,
which is especially significant on macOS.

* coreutils-remove_hostname_documentation.patch
* coreutils-remove_kill_documentation.patch

(cut_fields_mb): Likewise for field_idx.
* tests/misc/cut.pl: Remove downstream tweaks as upstream MB tests are

==== update-alternatives ====
Version update (1.19.0.4 -> 1.19.0.5)
- Update to 1.19.0.5:
* no changes in update-alternatives code, only dpkg
==== xapian-core ====
Version update (1.4.5 -> 1.4.6)
- Update to 1.4.6:
* API classes now support C++11 move semantics when using a compiler which
we are confident supports them (currently compilers which define
__cplusplus >= 201103 plus a special check for MSVC 2015 or later).
C++11 move semantics provide a clean and efficient way for threaded code to
hand-off Xapian objects to worker threads, but in this case it's very
unhelpful for availability of these semantics to vary by compiler as it
quietly leads to a build with non-threadsafe behaviour. To address this,
user code can #define XAPIAN_MOVE_SEMANTICS before #include <xapian.h> to
force this on, and will then get a compilation failure if the compiler
lacks suitable support.
* MSet::snippet():
+ We were only escaping output for HTML/XML in some cases, which would
potentially allow HTML to be injected into output (this fixes
bnc#1099925, CVE-2018-0499).
+ Include certain leading non-word characters in snippets. Previously we
started the snippet at the start of the first actual word, but there are
various cases where including non-word characters in front of the actual
word adds useful context or otherwise aids comprehension.
* Add MSetIterator::get_sort_key() method. The sort key has always been
available internally, but wasn't exposed via the public API before, which
seems like an oversight as the collapse key has long been available.
* Database::compact():
+ Allow Compactor::resolve_duplicate_metadata() implementations to delete
entries. Previously if an implementation returned an empty string this
would result in a user meta-data entry with an empty value, which isn't
normally achievable (empty meta-data values aren't stored), and so will
cause odd behaviour. We now handle an empty returned value by
interpreting it in the natural way - it means that the merged result is
to not set a value for that key in the output database.
+ Since 1.3.5 compacting a WritableDatabase with uncommitted changes throws
Xapian::InvalidOperationError when compacting to a single-file glass
database. This release adds similar checks for chert and when compacting
to a multiple-file glass database.
+ In the unlikely event that the total number of documents or the total
length of all documents overflow when trying to compact a multi-database,
we throw an exception. This is now a DatabaseError exception instead of a
const char* exception (a hang-over from before this code was turned into a
public API in the library).

==== yast2 ====
Version update (4.0.78 -> 4.0.79)
- Network: Prevent from crashing when trying to delete some ip
aliases from the original devices (bsc#1098919)
- 4.0.79
==== yast2-installation ====
Version update (4.1.4 -> 4.1.5)
- Fixed returned value calling copy_files_finish when
some ssh file exist (bsc#1099104).
- 4.1.5
==== yast2-pkg-bindings ====
Version update (4.0.12 -> 4.0.13)
- SavePkgService: Checking if the service file still exists before
updating it. Otherwise add the service instead of updating it.
(bsc#1097756)
- 4.0.13
==== zerofree ====

The full announcement can be viewed at release-tools.opensuse.org [1] along
with images.
Adding to the variety of metrics already captured at metrics.o.o [2], I have
added download.o.o access metrics [3]. These metrics are sourced from the
Apache access logs produced by the download.o.o machine. The goal of parsing
the logs was to provide some insight into product adoption and long-term
usage, in addition to overall project health.
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-stacked…
The logs cover data from 2018-06-20 (and ingested daily going forward) to
2010-01-03 and amount to roughly 24TB of raw data. After exploring a few
tools, like telegraf [4] (since commonly paired with influxdb [5]), they were
found to be lacking in the speed department. For example, telegraf could not
even handle 1000 entries per second [6] which would require well over three
years to parse the data (reduced to over 6 months using concurrency if it
supported that). Influxdb also couldn't handle the raw data (even a single
day) as I had hoped to use it to perform the aggregations. As such, short of
finding a magic tool which would still require customization for the custom
log fields and meaning I opted to write a tool [7].
Given the speed sensitive nature of the problem I tested the primary scripting
language of the openSUSE release tools, python, and compared it to PHP which I
knew is generally faster. A simple test running a "starts with" on each log
file line was an order of magnitude faster in PHP and the difference widened
the more processing that was added. As such I opted for using PHP which was
fast enough for the job while providing scripting language convenience. The
end result was ~500,000 entries per second per core with full concurrency
supported. Using this solution the last 8 years of data was processed and
summarized in ~23 hours using 7 cores of an office machine. Going forward only
the last day needs to be summarized which takes a minute or so.
For those interested the 24TB was summarized to roughly 12GB of data which is
then aggregated to roughly 8MB in influxdb. The 12GB lives on metrics.o.o in
order to aggregate new days against previous data. The tool could be changed
to drop data past the largest aggregation interval (ie a month), but if the
aggregation algorithm is changed it would require the summary data.
For further details about the tool or to review it see metrics/access
directory [8] and README.
One of the areas of interest was the number of beta systems Leap receives. The
release schedule for the last three releases of Leap may be used to annotate
the graphs by enabling the corresponding annotation at the top of the
dashboard. The individual product series may also be isolated by clicking the
product in the legend (ctrl+click to select more than one to isolate). The
time range may also be changed using the tool in the top right (next to
refresh button) or by selecting the area on graph (left click, hold, and drag
to end of area desired). After focusing on 42.2 and 42.3 Beta phase we can see
several thousand systems for both, but less for 42.3. It would be interesting
to know if that reducing is a result of the rolling release model or something
else.
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-beta.png
One item to note is that, SUSE IPs (such as openQA) are not currently filtered
out of the data and as such depending on usage may bump up the beta numbers.
This is something I have not yet explored, but should not be too difficult to
filter assuming an IP list or user-agent.
The extreme long-tail of systems on old products is interesting and would
seemingly indicate either neglected installs, laziness, or fear of updating,
but given around a quarter of openSUSE systems are on releases beyond end-of-
life [9] it is a bit concerning. :/ It may make sense to add an annotation
containing product end of life dates. When compared to the last two versions
of Leap_, Tumbleweed usage amounts to nearly half of one Leap release or a
fifth of systems on supported releases.
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-stacked…
For those interested, in more details there are three collapsed sections at
the bottom of the dashboard which contain additional breakdowns of the data
and output from the tool. For example, you can see the request counts by
unique system by product. Although the averages are reasonable, the maximums
are extremely high. Such maximums seemingly indicate either spam or heavy UUID
reuse. Changing the aggregation frequency to day shows a very flat series that
seemingly indicates automation.
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-average…
Another area of interest is the steady increase in ipv6 traffic to roughly 10%
of current unique systems.
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-unique-…
The tool output includes the raw log size the metrics represent for the
current time interval in addition to the number of invalid entries
encountered. From reviewing a large number of the entries marked invalid they
indeed are generally bogus, attack attempts, or incomplete requests. If we see
a large decline in system counts and huge spike in invalid counts that should
be clear there is a problem with the logs or tool going forward, but the most
recent numbers, before the log format was broken, show the lowest invalid
counts.
The invalid log entry counts line up nicely with the big hole in the data.
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-invalid…
If the time range is change to a year and the aggregation frequency (top left)
is changed to a day we can very clearly see the correlation. It is even clear
that the day before the big hole is the day the error was made as half the
entries are invalid and log size is in between the day before and after.
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-log-siz…
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-invalid…
Similarly, if the unique by product (stacked) is reviewed by day another
pattern exposes itself. A consistent drop in unique counts by nearly 20%. In
other words 20% of systems have weekends. :)
http://release-tools.opensuse.org/image/metrics.opensuse.org-access-stacked…
Also note that one can export the data as CSV in addition to viewing a graph
full screen by clicking on the graph title. I look forward to receiving
feedback and insight after people explore the data.
While reviewing some of the raw log data I discovered a fair number of
interesting and odd entries. I will summarize some of the highlights below
(excluded from mailing list announcement).
Enjoy!

Hello,
>From time to time since several months now, I noticed freezes on my TW:
suddenly system went unresponsive and I can't input anything by the
keyboard.
All the apps loaded keep working regularly but I can't input any command
by the keyboard.
Only mouse navigation through the windows is functional.
I red some reports on the Web that this is a common occurrence for Intel
i915 video cards which I'm using here on my Leonovo Z470, then I tried
to modify the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-intel.conf by changing former
AccellMethod parameter from *sna* to *uxa*, without any beneficial effects:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-intel.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
#Option "DRI" "3"
#Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
My grub default is like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="libahci.ignore_sss=1"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=1
intel_idle.max_cstate=1 resume=UUID=b0674d72-5b01-402b-8e0f-cf69170e6b05"
The only command that so far works to unlock the keyboard to me is to
send an HUP signal to agetty:
ps -ef|grep agetty
root 16419 1 0 13:32 tty1 00:00:00 /sbin/agetty -o -p -- \u
--noclear tty1 linux
sudo kill -HUP 16419
Does somebody faced similar issue and found a definitive solution?
Thanks!
Cheers,

Hi,
at the moment I try to install openSUSE Kubic on a RAID system:
md0: sda1 + sdb1 RAID 1 /boot ext3
md1: sda2 + sdb2 RAID 0 swap swap
md2: sda3 + sdb3 RAID 1 / btrfs
I can create such setup in the storage part of the installation, but in the
end the installation of grub2 is failing because it does not find the md
device. If I look in the created grub.cfg file root is set to /dev/md0 (and
not /dev/sda1 for example). How can I install openSUSE to a RAID boot device?
Shouldn't it be possible to use /boot as RAID 1 device and tell grub to only
use the partition from one of the disks?
Cheers,
Marcel

==== qpdf ====
Version update (8.0.2 -> 8.1.0)
- Update to version 8.1.0
Usability improvements:
* When splitting files, qpdf detects fonts and images that the
document metadata claims are referenced from a page but are
not actually referenced and omits them from the output file.
* When merging multiple PDF files, qpdf no longer leaves all
the files open.
* The --rotate option's syntax has been extended to make the
page range optional. If you specify --rotate=angle without
specifying a page range, the rotation will be applied to
all pages.
* When merging multiple files, the --verbose option now prints
information about each file as it operates on that file.
* When the --progress option is specified, qpdf will print a
running indicator of its best guess at how far through the
writing process it is.
Bug fixes:
* Properly decrypt files that use revision 3 of the standard
security handler but use 40 bit keys
(even though revision 3 supports 128-bit keys).
* Limit depth of nested data structures to prevent crashes
from certain types of malformed (malicious) PDFs.
* In ?newline before endstream? mode, insert the required
extra newline before the endstream at the end of object streams.

API changes.
