Hello everyone,
With the upcoming Leap release the Board is working to help Ludwig
produce the best release ever, or to be honest just better than the
previous one.
We have an established task list of items that needed to be done prior
release of distribution, like Leap 42.1 is here [1].
In the past, these tasks were then distributed among the SUSE employed
openSUSE team which tried to incorporate community and in the end make
sure that everything gets done.
Now things are different. We would like the community to be directly
responsible for ensuring these tasks get carried out. To accomplish
this we intend to create a full team of people taking care about what
needs to be done for the release.
We expect the people in this "Community Release Team" to be the ones
responsible for the tasks in their respective areas of responsibility.
We are not necessarily expecting these people to directly do all the
tasks, but it will be their responsibility that they get done.
They should work towards encouraging more contributors to work with
them on these tasks, if necessary lifting a pitchfork and prod people
to ensure all the tasks are done, or stepping up and doing the tasks
alone as a last resort.
The tasks can generally be split in following areas:
* Marketing
* Design
* Infrastructure
* Documentation
* Translations
* QA
To avoid expanding this mail too much brainstorming/descriptions are
attached in rst formatted file. It is not complete listing of the
tasks, those are mostly in the progress [1] and if anything else happen
to be needed/invented by the guys volunteering to do this it will be
expanded.
If you are interested on taking the lead on any of these areas and
joining this new "Community Release Team" please let Ludwig and the
board know.
Cheers
Tom + Rest of the board

When I report a bug in KDE using DrKonqi, it inserts the following
information at the top of the bug report:
Distribution: "openSUSE Tumbleweed (20160117) (x86_64)"
Where is this date (2016-01-17) taken from, and what does it mean? (Note
that I’m using the latest release of Tumbleweed, *not* one from January
2016.)

==== argyllcms ====
Version update (1.6.3 -> 1.8.3)
- BuildRequire systemd-rpm-macros which defines _udevrulesdir for us
- Update to version 1.8.3
* Added SpyderCheckr24 scaning .cht and .cie files.
* Fixed USB problem with i1pro (Rev B & D ?), where communications
would occasionally break down on fast systems.
* Added another fixed display intergration time to i1pro non-adaptive
emission mode to cope with higher brightness displays.
* Added workaround for i1d3 Rev. B status code 0x83 on very low
light measurement
* Fixed minor bug in i1d3.c that truncated serial number string.
* Fixed bug in Klein K10 driver - adaptive measurement wasn't properly
using all the extra measurements.
* Improved Klein K10 driver to be more robust when lights off command
returns bogus error codes, or causes a cascade of bogus measurement
errors.
* Added workaround for OS X 10.9+ "App Nap" problem.
* Added maximum sensor frequency check for Spyder & i1d3 drivers,
so that erronious readings due to excessive brightness can't be missed.
* Changed chartread so that it doesn't warn of a possible wrong strip
being read, nor allows bi-directional strip reading, if "printtarg -r"
was used. A warning will be issued if "printtarg -r" was used, and
"chartread -B" wasn't used.
* Fixed collink for eeColor Full range RGB to use output curve
("second" 1D curves) to compensate for cLUT being wired for 1.0
output from 1.0 input.
* Added "lp" gamut mapping intent :- Luminance Preserving Perceptual,
for Photographers concerned with maintaining tonal variations.
* Fixed bugs in image specific gamut mapping that were degrading
the accuracy of the result.
* Re-wrote gamut smoothing code, and re-tuned it to behave similarly
to the V1.8.2 release.
* Changed default viewing condition glare to 5%, to smooth out shadow tone curve.
* Reduced the level of Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect in CIECAM02
implementation in the light of visual experiments.
- Changes from version 1.8.2
* Fixed endless loop bug in alternate calibration selectors code.

* Added support for the Image Engineering EX1 spectroradiometer.
* Added support for the SwatchMate Cube reflective colorimeter,
with improved accuracy.
* Added Added Television Lighting Consistency Index (EBU TLCI-2012 Qa)
to spotread and specplot output.
* Added R9 value to CRI value in spotread and specplot output.
* Added workaround for JETI specbos having been calibrated by
a 3rd party, and its calibrated range being out of sync with
its claimed range.
* Added support for "EMISINPUT" type .ti3 file.
* Build using OpenSSL rather than axTLS if it is built on Linux.
* Fixed stack space problem in OS X UI programs by expanding main
thread proxy to have 8MB instead of the default 512K.
* Updated built in libtiff to V4.0.4beta.
* Changed CGATS format to not emit unknown keyword declaration ("KEYWORD")
by default.
* Added inst_calc_cond_mask to inst.h to allow for flags in calibration
conditions. A consequence of this is that calc needs to be masked with
this when comparing against a specific condition, and the inst_calc_optional_flag
should be cleared if it is set, before callint inst->calibrate() if the
user wants to proceed with a particular calibration.
* Fixed bug with dispcal -e N
* Fixed bug in xicclu -fg and -kp
* Added dispcal -x x option to allow reading a chart and manually entering
the XYZ values.

filename rather than the whole file path.
* Fix technology type and display type selector "uniqueification"
bug that shows up in "ccxxmake -??".
* Add OEM field to ccmx and ccss files to mark files that have
been installed from OEM disk, so that custom ccmx & ccss files
can be given suggested selector letter priority (+ ref/CRT.ccss).
* Tweak CGATS write format to avoid scientific notation until the
numbers are bigger and smaller (i.e until e6 and e-6 are needed).
- Changes from version 1.7.0
* Improved gamut mapping to reduce unnecessary changes to less
saturated colors such as skin tones.

the default.
* Add better cross compatibility with non-Argyll ICC profiles using
ArgyllCMS 'arts' tag to mark 'wtpt' Absolute Colorimetric chromaticity
transform, as well as implement proper absolute colorimetric intent
for Display profiles use the 'chad' tag. Note that the standard
ICC profiles provided by ArgyllCMS in the ref directory (such as sRGB etc.)
now include an 'arts' tag.
* Ignore any patches that have zero values for creating Display profiles,
unless they are for device zero.
* Fix various instrument communications problems for JETI specbos,
DTP20, DTP92 & DTP94.
* Fix gestaltSystemVersion warning on OS X 10.10.
* Fix very major bug in illumread. It wasn't actually working at all
since V1.4.0.
* Added collink -I[gG][:p.p]:x.x options that allows an output offset
gamma curve be targetted instead of BT1886.
* Added dispcal and collink -b black point hack. This forces the input
zero to map to the output zero for well behaved displays, reducing
dependence on the instrument accuracy for a very dark black point.
* Added preset list of display techologies to select from in ccxxmake.
* Added a -P prune option to profcheck, that creates a .ti3 file pruned
of any patches that have a delta E fit error greater than a threshold.
This may be of use in eliminating bad reading values from a measurement set.
* Added histogram plot option -h to both profcheck and verify.
* Added a dispread & fakeread -Z option to set the number of bits to
quantize the test values to.
* Fixed bug in targen - the -V dark emphasis wasn't being applied to OFPS
generated points.
* Make sure that if an instrument display reading is interrupted by a
forced calibration, that the user is asked to place it back on the
display before resuming the measurements.

respective dependencies.
==== grep ====
Version update (2.22 -> 2.25)
- grep 2.25:
* In the C or POSIX locale, grep now treats all bytes as valid
characters even if the C runtime library says otherwise.
( Fixes yast2-users and other build failures - boo#966780 )
* grep -oz now uses null bytes, not newlines, to terminate output
lines.
* grep now outputs details more consistently when reporting a
write error.
- Update to 2.24
* grep -z would match strings it should not. To trigger the bug,
you'd have to use a regular expression including an anchor
(^ or $) and a feature like a range or a backreference, causing
grep to forego its DFA matcher and resort to using re_search.
With a multibyte locale, that matcher could mistakenly match a
string containing a newline. For example, this command:
printf 'a\nb\0' | LC_ALL=en_US.utf-8 grep -z '^[a-b]*b'
would mistakenly match and print all four input bytes. After
the fix, there is no match, as expected.
[bug introduced in grep-2.7]
* grep -Pz now diagnoses attempts to use patterns containing ^
and $, instead of mishandling these patterns. This problem
seems to be inherent to the PCRE API; removing this limitation
is on PCRE's maint/README wish list. Patterns can continue to
match literal ^ and $ by escaping them with \ (now needed even
inside [...]). [bug introduced in grep-2.5]
- Update to 2.23
* Binary files are now less likely to generate diagnostics and
more likely to yield text matches. grep now reports "Binary
file FOO matches" and suppresses further output instead of
outputting a line containing an encoding error; hence grep can
now report matching text before a later binary match.
Formerly, grep reported FOO to be binary when it found an
encoding error in FOO before generating output for FOO, which
meant it never reported both matching text and matching binary
data; this was less useful for searching text containing
encoding errors in non-matching lines. [bug introduced in
grep-2.21]
* grep -c no longer stops counting when finding binary data.
[bug introduced in grep-2.21]
* grep no longer outputs encoding errors in unibyte locales. For
example, if the byte '\x81' is not a valid character in a
unibyte locale, grep treats the byte as binary data. [bug
introduced in grep-2.21]
* grep -oP is no longer susceptible to an infinite loop when
processing invalid UTF8 just before a match. [bug introduced in
grep-2.22]
* --exclude and related options are now matched against trailing
parts of command-line arguments, not against the entire
arguments. This partly reverts the --exclude-related change
in 2.22. [bug introduced in grep-2.22]
* --line-buffer is no longer ineffective when combined with -l.
[bug introduced in grep-2.5]
* -xw is now equivalent to -x more consistently, with -P and
with backrefs. [bug only partially fixed in grep-2.19]
- Update info handling scriplets
* move from postun to preun
* add dependeny for preun
- Refresh partially upstreamed patch
* testsuite.patch

==== kiwi ====
Version update (7.03.65 -> 7.03.67)
Subpackages: kiwi-desc-isoboot kiwi-desc-netboot kiwi-desc-oemboot kiwi-desc-vmxboot kiwi-doc kiwi-media-requires kiwi-pxeboot kiwi-templates kiwi-tools
- v7.03.67 released
- Add part_msdos module for self build EFI image
On ARM we have a few hooks in kiwi that allow us to adapt the
resulting image to target boards. On some systems, we need to
install the firmware to hardware specified sector offsets on
the image target (sd card).
Unfortunately some systems demand firmware at sector 1 which is
where the GPT would usually reside. So we need to use an MBR partition
layout.
We can convert the GPT into an MBR using gdisk in our ARM scripts,
but at that point grub2 would have to be able to interpret the MBR
as well. So we need the "msdos_part" module included (bnc#975898)
- Follow up fix for not writing grub.cfg to EFI dir
With the move to grub2-install and also shim-install
the static copy of the grub configuration into the
EFI boot directory became obsolete (bnc#968270)
- v7.03.66 released
- Fixed kiwi-pxeboot package setup
The package was marked noarch but has architecture dependant
requirements. Therefore it can't be marked noarch (bnc#974651)
- Fixed oem and vmx buildservice boot requires
The packages kiwi-desc-oemboot-requires and kiwi-desc-vmxboot-requires
did not explicitly require grub2 or the architecture specific efi module
packages for the arm architectures. The requirement was added by the
contents of the arm boot image descriptions. However those packages
will not be part of the boot image descriptions in the near future
and thus the buildservice needs them to be referenced explicitly
in the spec file

==== phonon ====
Version update (4.8.1 -> 4.9.0)
Subpackages: libphonon4 phonon-devel
- Remove now unused automoc4 BuildRequires
- Update to 4.9.0:
* Changes
* Builsystem helpers are now installed to CMAKE_INSTALL_DATAROOTDIR
* CMake 2.8.9 is required to use GNUInstallDirs and for the Qt5
code branches
* automoc4 support was removed. Building always use the cmake
built-in solution now.
* Qt5 and Qt4 builds use different CMake configurations now
Qt4 is as it always has been
* Qt5 moved away from crudely ported Qt4 configurations to using
extra-cmake-modules' KDE compiler and cmake flags.
* Installation paths and so forth are still jointly configured as
to retain backwards compatibility (i.e. Qt5 build does not
follow ECM's KDEInstallationPaths)
* Bug Fixes
* VolumeSlider has seen async behavior improvements making the
slider not hop around when changing the volume rapidly and
the backend is lagging a bit behind.
* The volume change now occurs upon slider release rather
than instantly.
* Fixed a duble encoding issue with local paths that contain
percent encoded characters being double-encoded [kde#356218]
* New API
* New AudioOutputInterface49 for backends to implement. This
interface implements long-existing frontend interfaces for
muting, giving the backend easier access and control.
* setMuted(bool) mutes an AudioOuput (without the 4.9
interface this is done via setVolume(0.0) on the backend)
* mutedChanged(bool) signal emitted by the backend to
asyncronuously notify of the mute application
* The interface is only used if PulseSupport is not
intercepting calls
* New methods to differntiate states of PulseSupport
* request(bool) is used by backends to request PulseAudio
usage but no interception, this essentially enables device
listing but lets everything else fall through to the backend
(the existing isActive() method will not return true after
request(true), which makes it different from enable(true))
* isRequested() is a getter for request()'s state
* isUsable() is part of the previouys isActive() behavior,
it is true iff pulseaudio can be used
(daemon running, connected etc)
* isUsed() is a combination of isRequested() and isUsable()
(i.e. active but not intercepting)
* The existing isActive() communicates the same state as
before (active and intercepting) but now also takes
requested into consideration
* Enabling always implies requsting automatically, so
request(false) and enable(true) will ultimately still
restul in isRequested==true
- Update to 4.8.3:
* Set target interface include install dir
* Do not assume we have a backend when setting an output device,
kde#341296
- Update to 4.8.2:
* Revised the logic used by PulseSupport to come up with an icon
name for PulseAudio. If the application has
QApplication::windowIcon set with an QIcon constructed through
QIcon::fromTheme(string) the actual icon name will be used.
Otherwise the lower-case version of
QCoreApplication::applicationName is used.
* Fixed building with the compiler clang by reverting
a previously introduced workaround.
- Drop phonon obsoletes/provides, it was last used in openSUSE 11.4
- Move DBus interface file into devel package, it's unused at runtime
==== phonon-backend-gstreamer ====

- Use /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/50-system.conf as a system setup by
setup-pulseaudio script instead of modifying the global config.

* omjournal: fix libfastjson API issues
* ommongodb: fix json API issues
* dynamic stats subsystem: a couple of smaller changes
* foreach loop: now also iterates over objects (not just arrays)
* enhancement: queue subsystem is more robst in regard to some corruptions
* enhancement: Allow rsyslog to bind UDP ports even w/out specific
interface being up at the moment.
* new External plugin for sending metrics to SPM Monitoring SaaS
* bugfix imfile: fix memory corruption bug when appending @cee
* bugfix: memory misallocation if position.from and position.to is used
a negative amount of memory is tried to be allocated if position.from
is smaller than the buffer size (at least with json variables). This
usually leads to a segfault.
* bugfix: fix potential memleak in TCP allowed sender definition

parameters $keepalive... always worked
* bugfix: memory leaks in logctl utility
* bugfix omrelp: fix segfault if no port action parameter was given
* bugfix imtcp: Messages not terminated by a NL were discarded
==== sessreg ====

- SQLite 3.12.2:
* Fix compatibility with some legacy versions of sqlite database
* Minor bugfixes
==== sssd ====
Version update (1.13.3 -> 1.13.4)
Subpackages: libnfsidmap-sss libsss_idmap0 libsss_nss_idmap0 sssd-32bit sssd-krb5-common sssd-ldap
- Enable PAC responder.
PAC is an extension element returned by domain controller, to speed
up resolution of authorisation data such as group memberships.
- Update to new upstream release 1.13.4
* The IPA sudo provider was reimplemented. The new version reads the
data from IPA's LDAP tree (as opposed to the compat tree populated by
the slapi-nis plugin that was used previously). The benefit is that
deployments which don't require the compat tree for other purposes,
such as support for non-SSSD clients can disable those autogenerated
LDAP trees to conserve resources that slapi-nis otherwise requires. There
should be no visible changes to the end user.
* SSSD now has the ability to renew the machine credentials (keytabs)
when the ad provider is used. Please note that a recent version of
the adcli (0.8 or newer) package is required for this feature to work.
* The automatic ID mapping feature was improved so that the administrator
is no longer required to manually set the range size in case a RID in
the AD domain is larger than the default range size
* A potential infinite loop in the NFS ID mapping plugin that was
resulting in an excessive memory usage was fixed
* Clients that are pinned to a particular AD site using the ad_site
option no longer communicate with DCs outside that site during service
discovery.
* The IPA identity provider is now able to resolve external
(typically coming from a trusted AD forest) group members during
get-group-information requests. Please note that resolving external
group memberships for AD users during the initgroup requests used to
work even prior to this update. This feature is mostly useful for cases
where an IPA client is using the compat tree to resolve AD trust users.
* The IPA ID views feature now works correctly even for deployments
without a trust relationship. Previously, the subdomains IPA provider
failed to read the views data if no master domain record was created
on the IPA server during trust establishment.
* A race condition in the client libraries between the SSSD closing
the socket as idle and the client application using the socket was
fixed. This bug manifested with a Broken Pipe error message on the
client.
* SSSD is now able to resolve users with the same usernames in different
OUs of an AD domain
* The smartcard authentication now works properly with gnome-screensaver

==== xdg-app ====
Version update (0.5.1 -> 0.5.2)
- Update to version 0.5.2:
+ The way locale extensions work has changed. Now we build a
single extension for all locales, but we allow you to specify a
subset of it during installation and update time using the
- -subpath commandline flag. The main reason for this is that
the many extensions didn't scale, both in technical terms
(large ostree summary file size), but also in terms of the UI
listing hundreds of uninteresting things.
+ We no longer use sizes in the commit objects to get installed
and download size, instead we store some extra metadata in the
summary file. This allows us to get much faster access to
these, as with recent ostree versions we can cache the summary
file.
+ New command xdg-app build-sign that lets you sign a commit at
any time.
+ New argument xdg-app build --force-clean that removes
pre-existing build dirs.
+ xdg-app run now uses the "current" version as the default if
you specify no branch or arch. It used to default to the
"master" branch. This will default to the last installed
version, but can be changed with xdg-app make-current.
+ Added config-opts to the build-options in xdg-app-builder. This
allows you to extend the configure flags in an arch dependent
way.
+ Documentation updates.
==== xine-lib ====
Subpackages: libxine-devel libxine2 libxine2-pulse
- Drop libsmbclient BuildRequires: requiring a library to build is
in any case wrong. It's the responsibility of a -devel package to
pull in the real libraries.

[opensuse-factory] HEADS UP - 20160422 to come soon (if you agree)
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 02 May '16
by Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar 02 May '16
02 May '16
Hi fellow geekos,
As I already announced in my last weekly review [0], the next snapshot
(0422) will be HUGE. With the update of glibc to version 2.23, we
bootstrapped the entire distro again to ensure everything is really
built up proper again - which results in new binaries all over the
place.
Besides this, openQA has detected that using the Live Images to install
a system does not work [1]: initrd is not being written and added to
the bootoader config. Neither DVD nor NET installer are facing this
problem, so I am still considering releasing this snapshot. We surely
hope that this will be only a short time where the LIVE Medias are not
installable.
If you think this is the wrong move and the 0422 snapshot should NOT be
released, then speak up! I have to give openQA a manual go anyway and
I'll hold this back until Thu, April 28 22:00 UTC - so i ask YOU, the
community, if this release is acceptable to you or not.
Cheers,
Dominique

[opensuse-factory] Upgraded to the latest snapshot and ended up with a broken gnome? Look inside.

Hello fellow Tumbleweed users.
Zypper/rpm doesn't seem to be bulletproof in all cases, my GDM and gnome desktop both stopped working after upgrading to the latest snapshot.
But the workaround is quite simple:
rpm -qa --qf '%{name}\n' | egrep 'kde|gnome|xfce|qt|gtk|nautilus|gdm|xdm|sddm' | sudo zypper in -f
And gnome is back again.

Howard

Hello,
while updating to the latest Tumbleweed, a NFS share was umounted.
This share is listed in /etc/fstab, but mounted manually ("noauto").
The symptoms look like the long-fixed
https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=880208
but I couldn't reproduce it by force-reinstalling the nfs-client and
nfs-kernel-server packages.
Unfortunately this happened while installing the "big" update with 4000
updated packages, which makes it hard to find out which package did this.
It also makes it hard to report a bug - "one of these 4000 packages
umounts NFS shares" isn't what developers want to see ;-)
Any ideas which package could trigger the umount?
Regards,
Christian Boltz
