[opensuse-factory] HEADS UP - 20160422 to come soon (if you agree)
Hi fellow geekos, As I already announced in my last weekly review [0], the next snapshot (0422) will be HUGE. With the update of glibc to version 2.23, we bootstrapped the entire distro again to ensure everything is really built up proper again - which results in new binaries all over the place. Besides this, openQA has detected that using the Live Images to install a system does not work [1]: initrd is not being written and added to the bootoader config. Neither DVD nor NET installer are facing this problem, so I am still considering releasing this snapshot. We surely hope that this will be only a short time where the LIVE Medias are not installable. If you think this is the wrong move and the 0422 snapshot should NOT be released, then speak up! I have to give openQA a manual go anyway and I'll hold this back until Thu, April 28 22:00 UTC - so i ask YOU, the community, if this release is acceptable to you or not. Cheers, Dominique [0] https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2016-04/msg00447.html [1] https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=977656 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Just to report, in this snapshot with glibc 2.23, we will not have julia 0.4.5 for i586 architecture. For some strange reason, I could neither build llvm 3.3 nor 3.7.1 for i586, which are required by julia. I have already contacted upstream (julia [1] and llvm [2]), but I still have not found any workaround for this problem. Thus, probably the support for julia i586 will be dropped until version 0.5 is released. ------------ [1] https://github.com/JuliaLang/julia/issues/16087 [2] https://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=27548 Regards, Ronan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

You should *ALWAYS* make backups, irrespective of Tumbleweed upgrades. But that's besides the point. The only issue identified is getting the new live image, putting it on CD/USB and installing a fresh system from this. All other cases, including a regular "zypper dup" from within the system, is not known to cause any issues. I suggest do release it. The sooner it can be tested (beyond openQA) the better. Maybe there can be some additional hint/readme/... in the download directory or on the download page to indicate this issue. Works for me. I say release it. Updating/upgrading installed systems will not notice a problem with "live" images. release it. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I vote for releasing it as well. That's what Snapshots are for!

Don't mis-understand this: if the TW snapshot was known to not be stable (to the degree we can test it with openQA), it would NOT be released. This current issue is ONLY related to installing a new setup using the LIVE images. As said, DVD and NET installers work perfect; so do existing systems that are upgraded using zypper dup. But the discussion is moot by now: the Snapshot had been released already during the night. I thought there should be also newest KDE (Plasma 5.6, apps 16.04, including newest PIM - whatever are the chaotic version numbers), but I still see Qt 5.5 and KDE apps (including PIM) 15.12. The upgrade took ~8000 packages and have current snapshot.
