[opensuse-factory] converting to systemd: appliance "firstboot" scripts

Hallo, as systemd is all the rage and I want to embrace change, I am updating some appliances and deprecating init scripts which have no issues. I am stuck though with firstboot scripts. Up until now, I ported some self-deleting firstboot.sh via tarball into the appliance, and images.sh contained essentially "copy to /etc/init.d, chmod". [opensuse-factory] Call for Action: Long standing build failures in Tumbleweed

Dear Contributors, As I informed a while ago, a new script is informing maintainers if one of their packages fails to build in Factory for a couple days (it does not send 'immediate' in order to not flood the mailboxes, some states are transient) >From the results, this is actually working very well (I see often just a couple days after the script notified that a submission to fix a package is incoming). We o have a couple packages left though, that having been broken for a while and I would like to ask everybody with power and will to step up and assist the existing maintainers with fixes and thoughts. [opensuse-factory] server:http OBS not currently building for Tumbleweed

Hi all, I was looking for nginx in Tumbleweed, and noticed that since 13.2, nginx has been removed from the standard repos and only exists under server:http. But checking the OBS page https://build.opensuse.org/project/repositories/server:http, Tumbleweed is not set to build, but Factory is. Can this be changed to include Tumbleweed? Also, what is the regular procedure to ask such a thing? [opensuse-factory] Is Tumbleweed more like "punctuated rolling"?

Hi everyone, so I was reading the openSUSE News page about "Tumbleweed Highlights ‘KDE Applications 14.12 snapshot’" in which they state: > The latest snapshot release of Tumbleweed has several updates. > We dub this as the ‘KDE Applications 14.12 snapshot‘ for Tumbleweed >since many are related to 14.12. So does this mean that Tumbleweed is more of a "punctuated-rolling" release based on periodically updated snapshots or update packs, as opposed to the "trickle-rolling" release model of something like Arch, which always receives a few updates every day? [opensuse-factory] Checking and failing build of packages with initscripts on Factory

Hello people, With release of 13.2 we marked 5 releases that utilize systemd as default init. There are still few leaf packages using regular old initscript instead of unit files. I guess it is due to simple fact that nobody bothered nor had a reason as it still kinda works. What do you think? Should I do the rpmlint check? Tom

[opensuse-factory] limited write cycles on filesystem media

We know popular modern media has limited write expectancy. The numbers are high and climbing as technology improves, but are nevertheless finite. Why are we habitually wasting them? Examples: Every installation, and upgrade, of netcfg, though often as few as 5 bytes, is writing a 4096 byte hostname/HOSTNAME sector (or possibly more) to the media, though no change to it/them has been made. During every zypper dup, something is writing /etc/fstab, yet, its content matches the backup. Many files in /etc/sysconfig get written during updating, yet remain unchanged from their backups. This wastefulness is not common to other distros I have familiarity with. Why is it happening in openSUSE? I did create a FATE for this. Today it reached 30 months of age.
