[opensuse-factory] GSOC 2013 - call for mentors: external boot selection for Grub2

Hi, I want to take part in GSOC working for opensuse, so I have posted my ideas here: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/2013-04/msg00057.html Someone answered me, that I should discuss it here and call for mentors. My idea: external boot selection sources for Grub2 (windows; serial port) This is rather cross-distribution topic, but may require creating distribution-specific tools (which could be incorporated to grub project, if they wants to). Problem scenario #1: I'm working (at the moment) on Windows, installed an system update and want to reboot. So, I click "reboot" and go to the kitchen to make a cup of tea. When I come back, linux is started, because it was default selection and grub booted into it. Problem scenario #2: My PC is shut down and I want to boot into Windows. I press "power" and wait for system to boot. BIOS takes some time to check the hardware, grub waits 3 seconds for OS selection and... I'm late for selecting Windows, because I was disturbed for a moment by something else. Problem scenario #3: I want to boot my PC remotely to Windows, using Ethernet card boot feature. I have to boot into default system (linux) first, then reboot into Windows. Common problem: I have to stare at monitor during boot process, to not overlook Grub menu - if I miss it, I waste lots of time to wait for reboot to correct OS. Suggested solution: I wanted to implement simple-to-use tools to make it possible to: - select "reboot to" OS directly from Windows (like it's currently done in opensuse) - this would include preparing configuration tool for linux (to setup grub, or windows app, if needed), patching grub itself (also, if needed) and implementing Windows application, which would let select next boot-once OS for Grub and reboot PC. Such Windows tool would be splitted into at least two components: pure command-line tool just to set boot-once setting and GUI app to easily use it. - (optional) make it possible to control grub via physical device (connected, for example, via serial port). It would make it possible for user to build a simple-as-possible switch, which would let him select OS *before* powering on or rebooting PC - (optional, I'm not sure if it's possible to do it during GSoC, or won't require too much dependencies) make it possible to select OS when booting from Ethernet card Is there anyone interested in mentoring this idea? Hi list, let us consider removing t1lib from factory. t1lib is unmaintained, see e. g.: CVE-2010-2642 CVE-2011-1552 CVE-2011-1553 CVE-2011-1554 CVE-2011-0433 Packages which requires t1lib for build in factory: evince texlive VFlib3 evince and VFlib3 could perhaps drop --with-t1lib configure switch, texlive could either use its own copy or drop support as well -- it appears from code that it uses t1lib as fallback if freetype2 can't handle given font. Opinions? Do you see any drawbacks? Thanks, Petr

It looks like a syslog-ng bug, it apparently soft-locks around a g_static_mutex_lock(&self->lock); https://bugzilla.novell.com/815746 Followup-to: opensuse-factory. Hi: While testing kmscon, I noticed that, by default it is impossible to login as root. kmscon simple invokes login(1) binary which in interfaces with PAM module pam_securetty that checks for "secure ttys" in /etc/securetty which lists the permitted devices as a whitelist..but kmscon does not use the tty(4) but pts(4) and /dev/pts/* devices are not in the list. While I think this "whitelist" is a pretty arcane and ugly way to control access, I'm looking for feedback on how to make this stuff work without having to manually extend the whitelist (and therefore perpetuating the false sense of security it provides) AND not breaking the old way. Does anyone have any feedback on how to "bypass" this list programatically ? [opensuse-factory] RFC: Drop cdrdao

Hi all, the various gnome*mm packages (last refreshed in ~ 2009) become more and more obsolete and painful to maintain; pretty much every new version of glib, gtk, other library keeps on breaking them. Looking at candidates to drop, I currently come across: libgnomecanvasmm libgnomeuimm libgnomeuimm depends as only package in Factory on libgnomecanvasmm, so dropping them together is a good start. There is one more package in Factory depending on libgnomeuimm: cdrdao (actually, the gui part gcdmaster. Frankly, looking at screenshots of this tool, I doubt anybody is seriously still using this. Hence the proposal: - Drop cdrdao As an alternative, we should as a minimum at least get rid of gcdmaster and the dependency of cdrdao on libgnomeuimm. Options? Comments? The systemd writer said to optimize boot get rid of initrd. I did that, and my system booted in half the time. Now you want me to go back to that. No thanks. Packaging has apparently changed for vlc. If you update to vlc-2.0.6-115.2.x86_64, note that the codecs have been separated and need to be installed, vlc-codecs-2.0.6-115.2.x86_64 or you cannot play broken/restricted/drm'ed music.
