-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all - I know someone else mentioned this briefly WRT to Tumbleweed, but I'd like to bring up for discussion the adoption of gcc 4.6 for Factory. A bit of background. We currently maintain a kernel-trace flavor to allow people to make use of the tracing facilities. Historically, there has been overhead associated with these, which is why they were in their own flavor. Most users don't care about them, so there's no sense in slowing everyone down to satisfy them. Over time, the maintainers of these facilities have worked to lower the overhead to the point where now dynamic ftrace only adds memory overhead. It uses gcc's profiling facility to call out to a function at the beginning of every function call to allow tracking. At boot, this is a function that returns immediately but during the boot process those calls are hot-patched to nop operations so that they carry virtually zero runtime overhead. This sounds great, right? There's one last bit, and that is actually the reason why ftrace is still disabled in our regular kernel flavors. The compiler's profiling feature calls the profiling function after the function prologue. That means that the stack pointer has already been advanced and since it can advance a different amount based on the needs of each function, we don't have an easy way to get the caller's stack frame back. It's needed to resolve where the caller was called from and the only way to do that is to dedicate a register to track the start of the current stack frame. Dedicating a register for this increases register contention and forces more accesses to CPU cache or main memory, slowing everything down. So, it's not worth it when most users will never actually take advantage of the feature that requires it. For some time, I've been trying to come up with ways to work around this so that the fast path stays fast and the tracing path takes any performance hit necessary. Until recently, the performance hit would've been too big to make it worthwhile. With gcc 4.6, we have the -mfentry option which moves the call to the profiling function *before* the function's prologue. This means that the caller's stack frame is still intact and we can resolve the caller's parent without issue. I've spent the past few days working up a proof of concept that takes advantage of this and doesn't require a dedicated register. It turns out that Steven Rostedt has already posted a patch set to do exactly this and he's targeting 2.6.40 for inclusion in the mainline kernel. For now it looks like it's x86-64 only but it should be ok for i386 as well. This would go a long way to eliminate the -trace flavor from our kernel packages. The benefits are multiple: It eliminates the maintenance of another kernel flavor, but it also allows everyone to use tracing facilities without installing a separate kernel release to do so. One last bit is needed, though, and that is for gcc to allow using -pg - -mfentry with -fomit-frame-pointers. [opensuse-factory] Dependency problem in Tumbleweed min repo

Hi I've got 11.4-based Tumbleweed (with KDE 4.6.2 and also 64 bit) and have just updated with "zypper dup --from Tumbleweed". All went well except for this statement from zypper: Problem: nothing provides libqt4-sql = 4.7.3 needed by libqt4-sql-mysql-4.7.3-166.1.i586 Solution 1: deinstallation of libqt4-sql-mysql-4.7.2-165.1.x86_64 Solution 2: keep obsolete libqt4-sql-mysql-4.7.2-165.1.x86_64 Solution 3: break libqt4-sql-mysql by ignoring some of its dependencies I can't find libqt4-sql (4.7.3) in search page of software.opensuse.org. [opensuse-factory] every TV app fails

Hey Group; Does anyone have a TV app that works. TVtime, xawtv, motv (KWintv is not available to try) are just some that fail. It seems they all fail due to framebuffers and/or KDE volume control. [opensuse-factory] perl-Bootloader log is HUGE (slow kernel installation?)

http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/SUSE/114/pbl-tail-gx150-114.txt This is roughly 95% of a 20,000 line tail from a 11.4 /var/log/YaST2/perl-BL-standalone-log, the portion created by today's zypper rm one kernel followed by zypper in one kernel. It's 1783595 bytes. That seems outlandishly large. The whole file dates back to 11.0, since this has been a Factory installation only upgraded in all that time. It's total size is 33403K. Notwithstanding that it would be a fraction of that size if ever 11.4 had been installed fresh, nevertheless it looks from my perusal and seeing references to an abundance of noauto NFS fstab entries like PBL is doing some unnecessary things, and why it seems to take an awfully long time to install a new kernel. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." [opensuse-factory] USB devices not enumerated

I have a system running 11.4/Tumbleweed with the following kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux No USB devices seem to be recognized by the running system, but are recognized at boot time as storage devices seem to screw up the boot sequence in the initrd so I think the hardware is running. lsusb shows the roothub as 1.1 but nothing else. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can look at to diagnose this further? [opensuse-factory] Where to file bugs against licensedigger?

Hi, There's a new review step done when packages are submitted to Factory (maybe just for updates that look like a new branch of a package), that checks the licenses of the package. That's all call, except that it doesn't handle well forwarding packages with a _service: "reject": "checkout failed: _service file without _service:* files" That's most probably because the review script was run before the build service ran the services. A potential solution for that would be to try again five minutes later, I guess. Where should I file that? [opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed kernel - warning no X

All, Just a warning that I just updated my Tumbleweed install today. It has been a few weeks since I did it last, but the 2.6.38.4 kernel failed to allow X to work. See my new bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691322 Resolution was as simple as rebooting and selecting the 2.6.38.2 kernel which Tumbleweed left in the grub menu.
