[opensuse-factory] [status report] openSUSE distribution, week 37

Hi! Didn't manage to write the status yesterday, I guess in calmer weeks it will be easier :) status report: week 37 - Christoph was responsible for beta2 and beta3, I took back over after beta3 was released (thanks for all the warm words, btw). - bug count is biggest concern right now. We're down from 12 blocker and 98 critical on saturday to 5 blocker and 91 critical (this of course include massive testing from all side, so we see new bugs every hour). - Biggest non-working part seems to be update right now. It creates problems in several parts. Update from 10.1 was completely unsupported with beta3, update from 10.2 created broken bootloader config in parts. - we reorganized the DVD layout again, so we fit more packages suggested in patterns and remove things that aren't listed in patterns. - we found a solution for the bundle-lang problem, so that we can save space on the CDs without breaking update to FTP later - we're still discussing if we go with ipw or iwl as default for the newer Intel wlan chips. iwl still has issues, but ipw is no longer maintained by Intel (but is our default as I write) - libzypp in beta3 had severe problems, so we have to have good faith for RC1 (online update was broken and the online update to fix it wasn't pulled in for everyone - and update from 10.2-x86_64 has shown problems) - the bigsmp kernel still causes problems (not just on virtualbox), so I decided to revert that feature and go with bigsmp only on big smp machines again (we might have a pae kernel in the future, so we're still interested in figuring out what's the problem with the other kernel). - LiveCDs of beta3 have shown too many problems to release them. So we only use them for further developing of them - this week: - more bug fixing - daily builds till we have a working update from 10.2 on coolo's laptop and a half way working update from 10.1 on coolo's wife computer (I admit it sounds selfish :) - an internal build with DVD. Based on that I'll publish live CDs. If you miss anything, let me know. [opensuse-factory] How to check the sanity of the system

Someone can tell me how to check the sanity of the system? I have 2 installations of opensuse 10.3 beta 3: 1- 32 bits upgraded from 10.2 beta 2 kde 2- x86-64 kde, instaled from zero in 10.3 beta 2 (previous versions of x86-64, could not be installed because the bug of the ahci driver). In the 32 bits I found 2 weeks ago some libraries named libstdc++*, which date was from year 2000, i would to verify from which package are it, but with rpm -q could not detect it, and I moved it to a backup directory. This 32 bits system has from time to time a rpmdb crashes, and acls from the removabledevices do'nt work right. Then I asked You how to check the sanity of the system. If I do'nt find the way, I must to format the 32 bits system partition, and later add the packages from non official repos, and recompile some applications. The x86-64 works better than the 32 bits version, do'nt has the rpmdb crashes and the acls for the removable devices works fine. The common problem with the 32 bits version, is with the wxGTK based applications. [opensuse-factory] VirtualBox can not work

Hi,there, I used the openSuse10.3 beta3 in the x86_64 machine.CPU is Intel Pentium 4 3.80GHz HT. I can create and configure a guest os, but I can not make it run, VirtualBox showd 'Aborted'. The dmesg reported 'VirtualBox[6299]: segfault at 0000003000000030 rip 00002b9c3b1bd856 rsp 0000000041122620 error 4' Could you give me some idea about the problem? BTW,I found the VirtualBox had released 1.5.0OSE,will openSuse10.3 contain that? I boot the dvd. It asks for my language (US), but not for the keyboard (ES), which is a nuisance. It searches the partitions, sees there are disks with more than 16 partitions, and pops a large warning, recommending to reboot the install with kernel option "hwprobe=-modules.pata". So I do. (Typing symbols like "=-" in a non US keyboard is a nuisance. When will grub support different keyboard layouts?) When I reach the point of installation (when it tries the network in order to add online repos), it pops a window requesting "insert opensuse 10.3 CD1", "continue/cancel". I'm using DVD! Why does it ask for the CD1? Anyway, continue doesn't work (it asks again for CD1), and cancel aborts the install. What now? Andreas: is that the workaround you wanted me to test? It doesn't work at all :-( More. If I type "mount" in one of the consoles, it yields nothing. Not even the root filesystem shows! Why? It seems to want to mount the dvd in /var/adm/mount. I don't understand the Package Selector of 10.3, I want to remove all games, so I select 'View Packages in categories' , the categories are showed although they are empty on "Installed Software" So my question is, How can I remove a complete category or pattern ? [opensuse-factory] Gnome pointer theme in KDE

I have installed beta3 from scratch and selected KDE only. The X Window mouse pointer has the Gnome theme (with the rotating dots when waiting for something). Misfeature? It might coincide with the time that the kmail build is called "enterprise". I didn't see this happen in earlier betas. But this might be because I was carrying the home directory over installations. Now I have started with a fresh home directory and configured everything from scratch. All messages appear as unread. Hello 1. Why is internal ntfs partiton mounted as ntfs instead of ntfs-3g?In Beta2 ntfs partition was mounted by ntfs-3g. 2. I haven´t tried writting to my external disk formatted with ntfs yet.Are you plane writting to external disks supported by default via ntfs-3g driver also? Hello, Sorry for posting here, but I still can't reach bugzilla (seems to me a routing problem, I could not reach it from any Hungarian address I tried, but others reported, that it works...) I ran into a strange problem with beta3 on Pegasos PPC: installation hangs just before or after formatting partitions. The problem seems to be something with the kernel. The installer tries to mount readonly all the partitions on the machine. One of them is reiserfs, which works perfectly with openSUSE 10.[012], and reiserfsck finds nothing wrong with it. [opensuse-factory] 10.3 Beta3 - YAST reports file size incorrectly when adding software after an install

I just installed 10.3 Beta3 in VMWare. The install went OK taking defaults only. Post install I started YAST and selected gcc and the kernel-sources. YAST then reported that this install would take +/- 265Gb of diskspace. Of course since there is only 5Gb in / YAST wasn't all that happy. I was able to ignore and complete the install. Anyone else bump into this? this is the newer virtualbox for 10.1 (according to yast) I tried to install the 10.3 beta 3 kde cd, all went well but at reboot it rebooted normally... without accepting root pass. this seems to be the usual problem when one try to install with only one cd. hi all ! openSUSE 10.3 BETA3 refuses to run on VirtualBox 1.5.0. BETA2 worked. Host: openSUSE 10.2, Athlon XP. When booting kernel, it says: "PANIC: CPU too old for this kernel.". Plus for some strange reason openSUSE 10.3 BETA3 chooses bigsmp instead of default kernel. [opensuse-factory] openSUSE 10.3, kernel update 2.6.22.5-12 doesn't create initrd

The latest kernel 2.6.22.5-12-default from update repositories has bug in postinstall script that prevents creation of initrd, making system unbootable. Bootloader is on different partition and script test for menu.lst fails, making script to skip creation of initrd. This has happened in 10. (bug 2290959), but it was corrected in 10.3 kernels and I closed the bug report. Now it is added new function in script and bug reintroduced.
