[opensuse-factory] modules gobble disk space with built kernel

/lib/modules/(stock2.6.21kernel)# du -s 60804 . /lib/modules/(my2.6.21kernel)# du -s 538292 . That's a 785% increase in space consumed by my modules over stock modules. Does that happen for anyone building their own Factory kernel? Can a more normal space consumption be made to happen by a mere mortal kernel building novice like myself? [opensuse-factory] Can't Rescue 10.3

Friday I determined that 4096 was an inappropriate blocksize for my non-libata hda19 Factory / partition. I booted 10.1 from hda7 and did a cp -a on that partition to another partition, reformatted to the 1024 blocksize, then did cp -a back to it. I then tried to mount and chroot to it in order to run grub-install. Grub-install failed due to the non-existent target device. Copying the hda19 device file from the 10.1 / and trying again didn't help. I tried to do a rescue installation, but both rescue modes apparently failed for a similar or the same reason. [opensuse-factory] ppc buildservice

Hello, I installed the latest factory, and I quite enjoy it, especially the part of adding repositories from the build service easily. I got just one 'little' problem: on PPC all of these repositories are empty (OK, I could probably find some 'noarch' :-) ). Any news on this? Or still 'no public info' or 'in a few months'? [opensuse-factory] RC1 install not completing

On both a desktop (two tries) and a laptop machine, I was unable to complete the RC1 install. After the reboot, I get a brief flash of GUI, then he drops back to console. I see some "bus error" messages, and console won't accept "root" as login. Anybody else seen something like this? I had no errors from Azureus when downloading the DVD, and used verify when burning with K3B. -- "After the vintage season came the aftermath - and Cenbe." It would be nice to be able to be able to have an option so these would show up with an option to not remove. The first time you see these will be removed is when the dependencies are resolved and zypper starts updating. These can be reinstalled without problems. There also is no consistency, e.g on one box upgrading to 10.3-RC1 removed skype, on the other it was kept. Worth a bug report? I'm assuming the trusted list is the cause. Since the DVD9s are being sent off for shipping, I thought I'd interest myself again by taking a look at some Bugzilla statistics again. So why not share? :-) Without further ado (and no double-checking)... There was a total of 6708 bugs reported; a massive 5308 of these were CLOSED/RESOLVED already (~80%). 258 of these were blockers, and 567 of them were critical.[0] 3138 are RESOLVED+FIXED. With 3258 bug reports (and the top three bug reporters), the non-Novell Community makes up 49% of all bug reports in openSUSE 10.3. 918 different people reported those bugs! 423 of them reported 1 bug report; 128 of them reported 2. 773 of them reported 9 or less. It will be great yast2-mail was able to setup an imap-server + webmail access. Hi, I have install opensuse 10.3 RC1. I can't find kdar, in the dvd, factory, or buildservice. I'm a little surprised. dar and libdar are there. I liked the gui interface that kdar provided. Is there some 'preferred' backup tool in 10.3? Can anyone verify that VirtualBox works and runs on 64bit? I spent a large amount of time trying to get it working for a user, and they seemed to be doing everything right: * kernel module was loaded * user was in the vboxusers group ...but it still produced the "not in vboxusers group or module not loaded". They tried the .run on virtualbox.org and it worked fine there. I tried to pressure him into a bug report but I don't think he'll file one (that was yesterday), so I'll ask here. :-) Similar problem perhaps to bug 309089. Saw this brilliant post from Marcus Meissner about speeding up the package management stack (link: http://marcusmeissner.livejournal.com/13428.html ) I tried this myself, and saw a dramatic improvement. I've used openSUSE 10.3 since Alpha 5 or so, and I guess all the refreshes of factory and KDE4 cluttered the cache files, because when I ran the steps above it pretty much cut my file sizes in half and Yast package management once again ran as fast as when I initially installed 10.3. I also posted it on suseforums.net for feedback, and it seems to be positive. I understand that factory refreshes place a non-standard "load" on the package manager, and that most users of 10.3 Final will not be placing as high a load on the package manager, but if this addresses a flaw that is intrinsic to the way zypper and rpm operate, is it worth maybe creating a standard script via cron job that "cleans" the package manager on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, whatever) ? I'm really, really impressed with the improvements to package management for 10.3, and I think the vast majority of existing users will be as well. I'm just wondering if we can cut down potential problems in the default install, without relying on pointing to a page in the wiki for de-cluttering the package manager after time ? Maybe I'm missing something and this won't wind up being an issue at all, but my own experience and the feedback I've received indicates otherwise. Is this something that will already happen, or is it worth opening a feature request for? [opensuse-factory] Dirty filesystem after Yast update of RC1 and halt + reboot.

Hi, I told Yast to update all updatables. It downloaded over a gigabit, it took the whole afternoon. It is a nuisance when it screeches over a network failure and doesn't retry till I come by the computer and tell it to retry. In the end, I told it to reboot, or perhaps halt; in any case, it halted. I booted again, and I saw the system running a long filesystem check because the root partition had not been cleanly umounted. I thought this was a known bug with the RC1 DVD, but not with the installed system. -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Hi, I only see the US language dictionary in Thunderbird. I tell it to download another, and it does: it downloads and says it installs the Spanish dictionary, tells me to restart it, I do, but it doesn't appear. I redo several times, no use.
