[opensuse-factory] Updates applet for GNOME

Hello, in the last status meeting Andreas announced that ZMD won't be installed by default in OpenSUSE 10.3. This means that the current version of zen-updater won't be used as the default update applet. As a consequence, GNOME would be without a dedicated applet for updates, while KDE will use opensuse-updater. I don't think opensuse-updater is a viable solution for GNOME too, considering it doesn't integrate well in the GNOME panel (a similar problem was present in 9.3 with SuSEWatcher). What are the plans to solve this issue? Will zen-updater be modified to let the user choose between zmd/non-zmd operations (I like this one ;-)), or will a new applet be developed? YaST comes up but won't open anything - hardware, software, Installation Sources or anything else, qt-3.3.7-24 is missing /usr/lib/qt3/translations/qt_en.qm. [opensuse-factory] GNOME main-menu uses too much memory and cpu

There's a serious bug in the gnome main menu (slab) in opensuse 10.2. In short, the menu uses a huge amount of memory, which increases at each operation done with the menu. The memory used can reach ~200MB according to what shown here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229190 Also the menu sometimes uses 100% of CPU without a reason. I think this issue should be fixed soon, because it makes the menu unusable on system without much RAM. [opensuse-factory] Banshee and iPod in 10.2

Banshee and Helix-banshee in opensuse 10.2 are affected by a bug which doesn't allow them to recognize iPod's. The bug is quite serious and was reported on bugzilla some time ago: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215301 The problem is solved in the version of banshee on BS, but no helix-banshee is available, which is necessary to properly manage the iPod. Will a patch be provided for 10.2? [opensuse-factory] GNOME: please report post /opt/gnome->/usr errors in your $HOME

Hallo. Just now, the move to /usr in Factory and GNOME:UNSTABLE is nearly complete. We are able to test and fix remaining references to /opt/gnome, but there is another problem, which cannot be guessed by any way: References to /opt/gnome in home directories. If your package setup is broken after move and you suspect, that the reason is hadwiring of /opt/gnome in $HOME configuration foles, please report about it. I guess that we have to ignore one time problems, (e. g. linphone forgets predefined ring tones and reverts to defaults, saved session does not find applications), but we should find situation, when application tends to use /opt/gnome forever without any user visible way to fix it or when it loses functions after move by not finding required stuff. openSUSE 10.2 does not appear to have any method of ordering the search of software catalogues under YAST> Software> Installation Source. Here're the proposed agenda items for this weeks dist meeting. * Use fast linking style: The linker & glibc in 10.2 support the --hash-style=both (or just gnu) flag, which halves linking time [ still a major cost on all startup]. Unfortunately - it seems we only re-compiled glibc with this flag, and not all the other applications in the system :-) Risk wise this is a no-brainer, RedHat are already shipping with --hash-style=gnu [ this is unfortunate since the binaries are then not back-compatible ]. We should most likely use --hash-style=both (at some small size penalty) - but after some time switch over to --hash-style=gnu to save size. * libata per default (see minutes from last time - the partitioning question is still open) * Enable -fstack-protector for the new distros for every package by default Red Hat according to their press statements builds all of their distribution using -fstack-protector, the heuristic stack overflow detection. While we use -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2, this one only covers known arrays. I think we should also enable -fstack-protector for all packages. If we enable it by default in the compiler, all software will automatically get the benefit too. [opensuse-factory] openSUSE KDE / Gnome Menu

Hi. As far as I know, the Gnome Main menu as well as the new KDE Menu (kicker, right?) were implemented by Novell. I think both are quiet a nice thing. As I prefer Gnome as my Desktop, I was wondering if the start menu there will evolve a bit more, maybe in direction of Kicker? This tabbed view of Kicker rocks. The Gnome Menu with the favourites is very handy, as it brings me all the apps I most need. But on the other hand, the access to the 'other Applications' is sometimes rather slow (takes about 3 seoncds to open on my notebook). For this, the 'Applications tab' in KDE is very handy... even though I think you need to click to much when going through the menu levels. What are other peoples thoughts about these menus? [opensuse-factory] Making the basesystem smaller

I heard from several sides that the base system of openSUSE 10.2 is a bit large - and agree and would like to discuss with you what we can do. I thought about the following: * make the existing base system pattern really minimal * add another conveninience pattern that has all the extra stuff we currently have in the base system - and require this for all other patterns. For a really minimal base system we have to define what we need first. Here's a proposal for a "Definition Base System": Multiuser system with: * Local login (via /etc/passwd) * network setup via ethernet * default filesystems used (ext3) directly (without evms, lvm, mdraid etc) * no services running by default My questions for discussion are especially the following: * What do you think of this? Do you have better ideas? * Is the "base system definition" ok? What's missing - or is it still too much or should made clearer? * How do I name the new pattern with all the extra stuff?
