[opensuse-factory] What is Yast/ZEN doing with so much info?

Goodday, I write to the factory list cause this are factory matters, and I do not have the knowledge to know if this are bugs (I guess not) and I really like some shining light in this case. I've got the latest stuff from Factory and of course, I gonna try ZEN/zypp/YaST. Therefore I add Factory again with 'yast2 inst_source'. There is a HUGE improvement with a progress-bar that is on this moment for each task a 0-100 bar. I hope it will change to 1 total 0-100 bar and text-refreshment about what is going on. But that is just a wish. Seeing what YaST is doing, I was confused. It starts with downloading many .pat-files. For each platform! Not only i386/i586 but also x64 and pcc. I will never use those things I guess on an i586-system so why are the downloaded? I guess there is a good reason for cause the ZEN/YaST-stuff has been many times under the microscope. But could somebody explain it to me? In the same category: Downloading all description translations. (or at least DU, CZ an EN). I guess YaST can recognize that I use Dutch and English packages only and it won't show me any German info so why is it downloaded? Otherwise, would be a very nice option :P In another category: I thought that Yast inst_sources would only need 1 screen since that seems the policy (that I like). The new progressbar however, is a new screen. ps. Welcome to beta everybody!!!!! (looking at the agreement) pps. It works! ZEN did not complain and I can see it in the servicelist! pps. + 20 points for the team that made it work and listens to the wishes :D (maybe they can talk to the copiz-team, they are forked for too less communication and not listening to wishes I heard) pppps. [opensuse-factory] Automounting in opensuse - explanation please

Google search revealed problems, but no solutions or documentation on how this is supposed to work and I'm puzzled as I'm seeing different behaviours. On openSUSE 10.1 the cdrom/DVD devices are not being created (DVD RW installed) and 10.2Alpha4 (CDRW installed) /dev/cdrom is created. Checking all boxes, /etc/udev/rules.d/65-cdrom.rules on all are OK and on 10.2Alpha4 only there is also 60-cdrom_id.rules. Upgrading a 10.1 x86 box to hal(0.5.8_git20060822-3) and udev (0.99-3) built locally from factory source RPM's didn't change behaviour. Thanks and Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... [opensuse-factory] Kernel Source x86_64

It looks like the Kernel Source RPM for the x86_64 systems got missed on the last update. It is still at version 2.6.18-3, dated 22-Sept-2006 21:50, while the kernel rpm is 2.6.18-4 dated 23-Sept-2006 20:02. [opensuse-factory] Pattern representing the default rpm build environment

Hi, there are many "I can't rebuild foobar.src.rpm on my system because of missing BuildRequires" bug reports caused by the fact that there is a set of packages which are always implied to be present for rpm builds. (Just today a new one, #207941). These are not real bugs, but caused by the fact that users don't know which packages they need for rpm builds. There used to be a list of default packages in /etc/y2pmbuild/dists, but y2pmsh has been dropped from Factory and this config file is no longer provided. As a replacement for the "defaultpackages" line in the dropped y2pmbuild config file, I'm proposing a new pattern, "Minimum RPM build environment". Specifications of this pattern: - Includes all packages that you are implying as present without "BuildRequires:" line in your internal build system; - All packages are pulled in via "Requires" (no soft dependencies) in order to make sure that the pattern is completely installed. This might help users rebuilding source packages without reports about missing "BuildRequires:" lines in the spec files that are not actually missing. Thoughts? [opensuse-factory] SaX2 database, NVIDIA Quadro FX550, 3D and Xgl

I reinstalled the 10.2 alpha4 x86_64 with a PS/2 mouse on a Xeon 5160/NVIDIA Quadro FX550 Dell Precision 490 workstation. During installation, the correct WUXGA 1920x1200 resolution was set for the display Dell 2405FPW. But the Gnome panel and Nautilus crashed immediately and it wasn't possible to launch neihter the control center nor other applications. Therefore I couldn't verify with Dekstop effects if 3D was enabled to run Xgl later. KDE however worked more normal and better. Tested also a stable 10.1 installation. SaX2 showed only a "VESA frambuffer" with 1280x1024 resolution available. Trying next to follow the "Nvidia Installer Howto for Suse Linux users" which suggested an easy YaST2 installation of nvidia. But "sax2 -r" aftewards didn't load the nvidia driver. Even after compiling the latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8774-pkg2.run driver file into the kernel, SaX2 still showed only a "VESA framebuffer", though now with correct resolution 1920x1200 for the diskplay. But 3D wasn't enabled or available in Desktop Effects which stopped trying Xgl. It looks like Quadro FX550 wasn't available in the database. Therefore I wonder if NVIDIA Quadro FX550 (3D) is supported in the SaX2 database in 10.1 and next in 10.2? Rgds, Terje J.
