[opensuse-factory] smart behind proxy: out of luck?

I'm trying to come up with a recipe for a working suse install, in order to help effect a greater prorogation of fully functional suse boxes. One of the main fixes needed is to the package management system, and I was hoping I had found the answer in smart. However, while smart has worked fine for me at home, it's failing here at the office, where we are behind an http proxy which requires authentication. In short, all http requests fail. There is no place to set the proxy credentials, and I try to set the auth parameters in the URL: smart config --set http-proxy=http://username:password@10.48.112.6 then it either fails, saying it can't resolve the malformed URL So, is this the end of the road for smart? What other package managers might do the job? The old yast worked fine, as did apt (since all the repos could be reached via ftp, which is wide open here) Suggestions? [opensuse-factory] 10.2 Alpha4 - my installation report

This time I was little bit more thorough logging what I have seen. I like 1 CD installation. It loads basic system fast and than I can add whatever I want. I tried that with 10.2 alpha 4, but it doesn't work that way. 1) Hard disk choice doesn't exist as source of installation. Later I've found out that some actually exist in text mode installation, hidden in Network Installation, it goes trough Network settings (?!) and than asking for directory, but it doesn't work on iso images. I didn't tried again with installation source expanded to directories CD1 to CD5. 2) Next, I tried with CD 1 to install Base system and than fro running text mode install the rest. It requires some 500 MB, but also 4 CDs (?). What happened to idea to have 1 CD for essential stuff? 3) So I quited installation, added another 3 CDs and tried to install Base + AppArmor + Console. It gives > 1 GB including some KDE files and requires all 5 CDs. I didn't checked what was from KDE, I remember kdelibs. I guessed that Console means text mode and few more applications like "mc", not graphic mode Console. I interrupted installation at that moment. Package dependencies seems to grow system to classic bloat. 4) Than when it is needed all 5 CDs, I decided to install default KDE, but after warm boot to SUSE 10.0, CDRW disappeared. Cold boot solved the problem and was CD5 added to set. 5) It is already mentioned that partitioning proposals are given in a strange way. First it tried to remove 10.0 installation from /dev/hda1, and create two partitions, than tried to remove data partition, on the same disk, than I stopped to play with different menu options and went to expert and gave /dev/hdb1 for installation. Partitioner warned me that it will be better with swap. Good, swap exists, I added it buy entering dialog where all was set just to click to OK and exit. This might be somewhat shorter, and just explain that we need a swap and ask which one to include. 6) Next is kind of my mistake, I should review expert options and prevent boot loader installation, and later fiddling to give control back to 10.0. 7) Audio was not installed. I can't recall that it was ever mentioned. The adapter is plain VT8233/A/8235/8237 so something with detection wasn't OK. Taking long list of: udev[411]: lookup_group: <misc devices> not found (or missing), during initial hardware detection, it can be that. 8) On first boot after installation, I got huge letters on both screens. What means huge, few letters from the top-right corner of the screen. Not enough space for a single word. Go back to terminal (Ctrl-ALt-F2), log in as root and start sax2. The same problem. No normal way out, but Ctrl-ALt-Back Space to kill X. I'm used to handle huge virtual screen like 1280x1024 in small real resolution, but this was not the same case. Mouse pointer went from side to side and didn't moved the screen. I have no good experience with sax in uncommon cases. I tried to start mc. Ups, it is not installed by default. Yast was installed so go and buy mc. With mc it showed up that Gateway EV500 15" monitor physical size was set to 28 21 in xorg.conf. This is correct in centimeters, but xorg server expects millimeters. Add 0 behind both and restart X. Desktop came back, only icons were randomly dropped around. Probably KDE was confused due to previous bad setting in xorg.conf. Many icons one over another. 9) The Main Menu is huge. Font is now OK, but surface is far beyond screen. Restarting KDE doesn't help. Go back to mc and find in users .kde directory kickerrc. Menu size was KMenuHeight=1950 KMenuWidth=3160 resize to 400x600 and restart KDE again. Menu is good now. This must be due to same 28x21 (cm) screen size that is probably bad entry in monitor DB. 10) As mentioned Midnight Commander is not installed by default. It should be in Alpha version. It is swiss army knife for troubleshooting. More I think, it should be included Base pattern anyway. 11) Now I need tiny-nvidia-installer to make use of MX4000 adapter. For now I don't know easier way to have nvidia drivers installed. Use YaST and install it. I know that I need kernel sources. They are not listed as dependency of installer, only xorg-X11-server-sdk, and that pulls in all of xorg development. Interesting. 12) gcc is not prerequisite (dependency) of kernel sources. If gcc is not installed what can I do with sources? I came with system configuration this far. Nvidia is left for some other day. 13) Attempt to see Krita that is in the same category as GIMP, finished with application crash. I'll try to see how to reproduce this. General 10.2 is nice and fast, and excluding installation, I can't see major problems. -- Regards, Rajko. [opensuse-factory] Musings on the New SUSE Menu System

Here are some of my thoughts on the first look and use of the new SUSE Menu system (panel?) This is cool however to make it UberCool... :-) The default icon graphics are just a little too big meaning that, for example, on the Leave page a scroll bar appears that is not really neccessary. If there is more items than can fit on a page maybe don't have scroll bars but use the up down arrows at the top and bottom of the menu area, similar to Firefox's bookmarks menu system. Don't have the search tips as the default screen when the menu is opened each time. Maybe do this once then use the favourites as the default. Or even let the user decide. Have a config button between the username and the openSUSE button that brings up the personal settings relevant to the panel. I found it hard to find the correct ones in the KDE configuration. Also under this button could be things like editing the favourites, changing icon size, etc. And finally I think the menu popouts should be automatic. At present I have to click on the item to have the sub menu appear. There should be a small delay but the item should appear automatically if the cursor if held over the item. This is the same behaviour as the classic menu. This includes the "back" button as well. Hi, As we're getting close to the feature freeze, maybe we should finally think about the statements below, what do you think about it? *---------------------------------------- Maybe I'm on the wrong place for this, but it might be interesting even here: Let's assume the following (I think a not so uncommon scenario): - A user installs a openSuSE Version 10.1 - He changes the installation repositories to something like ftp://mirror.suse.de/pub/SL-Stable/inst-source and adds also ftp://mirror.suse.de/pub/SL-Stable/non-oss-inst-source Now come's one of the trickier parts: The upudate repo is pointing to: ftp://mirror.suse.de/update/10.1 What will happen when openSUSE 10.2 get's the 'stable' Distribution an dwill thus be linked in place of 10.1? ZMD will most probably install many packages from 10.2 (maybe even wished by the user) but the link to the update repo will still point to 10.1. The same problem is with MOST external repos, as most of them also contain the version number in the path. Could there something be implemented to have it point to a URL like: ftp://mirror.suse.de/update /%OSS-VERSION%, thus updating the links upon a relink of the stable tree? The same would be great for external repos of course. I installed $SUBJ on two computers, i found some "rough" edges. Installation: Graphical installtion start with broken mouse [#206446] During package update yast force me to uncheck locked packages one by one [#206453] During hw detection (before starting to installation) popup window showd up with "HW detected should i load module ....." - i was not sure what i should do, so i "load" those modules, anyway very confusing. I had serious problems with configuration of graphic card (ATI :( ). Yast somehow preserve my old configuration ( i did update from 10.1) Which worked, with exception that every aplication using aclereation freeze. I tried to recreate xorg.conf using sax. But it faild [#206638] I use KDE and i realy like new menu, but with some exception: - it is not resizable (panel icon). So you had to have panel about 40px height for proper look. - menu pop up with mouseover should be configurable at least ( i found that when i turn of panel animation pop uping disapeard ... magic?) - when browsing trough all programs, there is nice animation between moving menu subfolders. It is nice at first look, but it slow down sometimes. I think it should honor global KDE configuration (panel animation setting in kcontrol) Finally i have to say, SL10.2 A4 is much faster than 10.1 even when i have beagle and zmd installed. Will we be able to use the 3D effects (Xgl) with Kde? We were considering to move from kde to gnome because we wanted to use the new menu and 3D effects we saw on SLD10.0.
