Missing Xen: Maybe this is not the right place, but I really miss Xen on the announced Features and Roadmap for openSUSE 10.2. The "Status of Xen3 on SUSE Linux 10.0", which is the only and latest I still can see, is http://en.opensuse.org/Xen3_Status_and_Updates The last line in that table, "Other Operating System support on top of Xen and VT not tested" is especially of interest to follow up now. XenSource is also just releasing their XenEnterprise with support Linux guest operating systems with Windows support following before the end of 2006 in alignment with the broad availability of Intel and AMD server systems designed to support Xen. XenEnterprise is promises to make it very easy for an organization to install, configure, manage and monitor virtualized Windows and Linux operating systems running across multiple physical servers. What I really wish is that openSUSE 10.2 will offer some smaller "Xen workstation" solution that with YaST tools can ease the installation, configuration and administration of Xen and typical and actual i.e Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP as additional guest operating systems on Intel-VT and AMD-V workstations. If this features is possible to include, I think it will further power openSUSE 10.2 ? Regards, Terje J. Our developers are continuing to improve the package manager stack. We'd like to release some of their changes for 10.1 now and I'd like to ask for testers. Please report all bugs you find in bugzilla (http://bugzilla.novell.com, component libzypp and include in the summary "Package Manager Update 3"). We plan to release on friday, 2006-09-01 an update to the test repository with anything that has been found so far and plan to release the final update next week officially. This update contains the following new features: * support for patch/delta RPMs in YUM sources (#168844) in YOU but not yet in the ZENworks tools This update includes fixes for the following bugs: * various performance enhancements * 190163 - *-kmp-* dependencies match multiple kernel packages * 176568 - Evaluate possible xml parser optimizations * 195567 - 100 /var/tmp/TmpFile.xxxxx in 3 Days * 193584 - cut-off package description in zen-updater * 194424 - Online update setup creates unusable cron job * 191676 - zen installer/updater cannot add an FTP YUM repository * 190295 - zen-updater/zmd/rug does not install update stack patches first * 193212 - zmd does not unblock transactions after transaction preparation failure * 191506 - zen-updated showing updates from non-subscribed catalog * 183656 - mono needed for YaST package management since last update openSUSE 10.2 will see further improvments that need even better testing. If you like to test, please read below the details - otherwise wait for the online update that we will release soon. Until the online update has been installed, I advise to run as root "yast2 online_update" for patch installation. If you have never updated the stack, then use yast to do the following, otherwise use either ZENworks tools or YaST: * Add the following (or one of the mirrors) as installation source: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/10.1-packagemanagement-update-test * Run an online update and install the new libzypp patch * Test whether YOU installs patches using patch/delta RPMs. Note patch and delta RPMs are smaller than full RPMs. Therefore download is faster but assembly of them takes longer. If anything looks broken, please contact myself and Stano <visnov at suse.cz>. Feel free to add him as <visnov at novell.com> in your bugzilla report, so that we do not lose track of any issues with this update. We do not plan to add further fixes, our goal is to get this update out and find any regressions introduced. openSUSE 10.2 will see further improvments that need even better testing and the ongoing progress can be tested using the openSUSE 10.2 Alpha releases - with Alpha4 next week. Michael Löffler is currently on vacation and asked me to discuss the following, it's based on his latest draft. All errors are mine naturally ;-) The upcoming openSUSE 10.2 will basically have similar content like its predecessor but comes of course with latest and stable Open Source packages available at that time. We went through Bugzilla, the feature list and package wishlist and try to accomodate your wishes and suggestions. Note that the list below is neither complete - it's just some of the highlights - nor a commitment. Hi, a very simple question about zypp multiarch handling. How does zypp deal with the following situations: 1) A package is available in the base installation source for both x86_64 and i586, and in the update repo there is just an i586 package. The x86_64 package is currently installed and the i586 package in the update repo has a higher version number. Does it "upgrade" (wrt. the version) resp. "downgrade" (wrt. the architecture)? Or will it keep the installed package? 2) Quite the same as 1), but during a system upgrade: Any differences in this respect between a system upgrade and an online update? Hi, Just to report a successfull network installation of openSUSE 10.2 Alpha 3 (hosted by oss.sgi.com) on my hp workstation zx6000. At the moment, I noticed that there are at least problems with the GNOME settings daemon ( http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2006-08/msg00563.html) and DRI (not yet reported). Hi, I just finished a fresh network installation of openSUSE 10.2 Alpha 3 on my hp workstation zx6000 (Itanium IA-64 architecture). When I log in a GNOME session, I'm getting a dialog stating that there was an error starting the GNOME settings daemon. This dialog has no window decoration at all. During the same time, the window manager icon is displayed for several minutes in the GNOME splash screen before the starting process and the remaining icons are displayed. I eventually access to a GNOME desktop, but there's no window decoration at all and windows can't thus be moved, resized, etc. I've only found one similar report here www.tuxmachines.org/node/8898 There's nothing similar in bugzilla for the openSUSE 10.2 and OpenSUSE.org products. I've found similar reports on Google for older SuSE distributions: it appears this was due to the language settings. However, changing the language settings to en_US.UTF-8 or even POSIX doesn't help. Is there anybody out there experiencing the same problem? Is this issue specific to Itanium? To 64-bit architectures? I've been following the developemnt of the wireless stack for quite a while now, and wihle it looked like the (Intel based) current ieee stack would be the base for a future unified wireless stack, things have changed significantly and chances are really high that d80211 will be the future - there has even been the discussion on netdev to make the switch as early as 2.6.19 (that's why I wrote "might ... one release early"). So even if it isn't quite ready for prime time now, it looks like it is very close - and if it makes it into a 2.6.19rcX while 10.2 is still in beta, I'd like to see a backport going into the suse 10.2 kernel - that's what I was really aiming at. ciao Joerg -- Joerg Mayer <jmayer(a)loplof.de> We are stuck with technology when what we really want is just stuff that works. [opensuse-factory] Latest Update on factory tree and 10.2 Alpha 3 experience

Hello list, I am closely following the factory tree with my installation (Dell Latitude C640). With the latest update from Aug 26th I hoped, some of the issues I had are solved and finally I can use firefox again which was one of the main issues. But a few other things I am struggling with: a) With rug I get dependendy problems updating cpp41, gcc41, gcc41-c++, gcc41-fortran, gcc41-info,gcc41-objc,libstdc++-41-devel The following things I see since updating to 10.2 alpha versions: b) metacity is not usable as window manager for gnome (I currently switched to icewm), starting it at the command line I get the following: sandmann:/ # metacity --replace Window manager warning: Bad key or directory name: "ENABLE_WINDOWS_KEYS": Must begin with a slash (/) Segmentation fault I was not able to find anything about the mentioned key/directory name and also google wasn't helping. Where can I start looking c) At startup I get a message "Gnome Settings Deamon" couldn't be started. After trying all solutions which I found, I completely reinstalled openSUSE (from the factory tree again), created a new user, but unfortunately the problem remained. The only way to use yast fully is from the command prompt. e) The gnome keyboard properties applet crashing when I try to start it. I still need to install bug-buddy before I can give more hints. If I start it from the console it hints again, that the gnome-settings-daemon is not running before crashing. f) NetworkManager doesn't recognize my network devices any more and says "no network devices found" so I had to change to the "traditional method using ifup" which works fine. I have a Dell True Mobile WLAN and a integrated fast Ethernet controller in my laptop. ___ Are any of these points visible for other people as well? Are any workarounds or solutions known? Shall I report the things as bugs? And beside from that I am struggling with videos (gstreamer doesn't want to play .wmv movies even after I played around a lot), opensync and evolution, ... Usually it's used with a dm-crypt device-mapper device. The cryptseup-luks tools are intended as a complete, backwards-compatible replacement for the original cryptsetup. LUKS stores a crypto-volume header at the beginning of the volume, so it can be safely probed and detected. Keys and encryption metadata are stored in the header of the volume. So far I was able to circumvent the wrongly detected Xorg version as described in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=198125 by recompiling the xorg-x11-server package with the configure options mentioned in http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=478. This way I was able to install the fglrx rpm and restart the X server. First of all, sorry if this is not the place where to ask this. In that case, point me where to send it. For building customized distros on top of OpenSuSE, it gets very important to look for and find the copyrighted logos (SuSE and Novell basically). As those logos are added by the OpenSuSE team, they could be easily identifed. For example, we could have a file called CopyrightedWork in the rpm-sources with the name of the files that have copyrighted stuff. So, the question is: Does it exist a mechanism for finding the copyrighted work? If not, are there any plans? [opensuse-factory] Excess bloat must be removed!

Perhaps this is all going to be fixed in 10.2 since 10.1 was obviously very bad, but just to make sure, I would like to clarify and state some of my opinions on what needs to go or become better integrated. First of all having what seems to be so many different ways to manage packages is becomming ridiculous and I'm hoping something's going to be done to standardize on one. Syncronizing all of them has to be crazy. Zen is just horrible right now imo. Its so unconfigurable and the interface to install packages just seems way to simplistic. One can hardly find out information on the package..it just basically seems to be searching through a list. Not only that but most packages are shown twice or more depending on repositories and updates! I do not know why it can't be done like synaptic and keep one package and then being able to update (I think yast does it this way too). I had no idea what exactly to click and how it would work out! It needs to be trimmed down to only showing the package ONCE which would be the latest and if not allow one to upgrade. I just really am not liking zen right now at all. I do not know why they couldn't have just continued to improve the speed of yast and keep suseplugger also. Second is the ridiculous amount of packages that are installed on first installation. Perhaps trim down default GNOME and KDE desktop choices like Ubuntu does (basically good packages from each, can install more later). The system after first boot shouldnt be more then 2GB imo. I know I can configure packages in Yast manually and I guess I'll probably just have to go through that annoying task for now on. and Finally, and this is my big peeve. FIX THE FREAKIN MENUS! The organization takes WAY too much time and maybe it won't matter if slab is integrated but we do not need categories and then ANOTHER category and then 5 different web browsers! Why the heck was konqueror installed when I selected GNOME as my DE in the installation and no where did I install KDE! Seamonkey was also installed WTH! Basically we do not need second level categories and 5 different web browser and terminal apps (ESPECIALLY WHEN I SELECTED GNOME AS THE DE), sorry that is my major pet peeve right now. Its ridiculous that when one selects the defaults that they are given 5-10 of everything. Please PLEASE PLEASE Clean it up! Please don't mistake my tone. I'm considering a move back to suse because I like the polish and yast and such, but 10.1 (and some parts were from 10 and back) is making me and my computer feel very bloated and like I have to maintain a "beast". I just tried to install 10.1 on this SATA system that was originally cloned from PATA when I bought a new system with I915/ICH6 and a faster CPU 17 months ago. Before the clone operation, 9.2 ran from /dev/hda16, Mandriva from /dev/hda7, Knoppix from /dev/hda15, and windoz and OS/2 and data occupied various other partitions. Now the 10.1 installer gives me these error messages: - WARNING: This system has at least one hard disk with a RAID configuration presented by the BIOS as RAID that is in fact software RAID. The following disks were detected as part of such RAID: /dev/sda /dev/sdb - The Linux kernel 2.4 supported some of these systems (like Promise FastTrack and HighPoint RocketRaid), but the Linux kernel 2.6 does not support them at all. If you install onto these disks, your RAID configuration and any data on the RAID will be lost. Refer to http://portal.suse.com to learn how to migrate to a Linux software RAID. - - Your disk /dev/sda contains 46 partitions. The maximum number of partitions that the kernel driver of the disk can handle is 15. Partitions numbered above 15 cannot be accessed. - Your disk /dev/sdb contains 19 partitions. The maximum number of partitions that the kernel driver of the disk can handle is 15. Partitions numbered above 15 cannot be accessed. - At the partitioning step, only those up to 15 were listed, and it offered to delete most (mostly OS/2, which it erroneously calls windoz) partitions. At that point I aborted the install, as I have all attempted Linux installs on this system. Surely people with SATA disks of upwards of 400G cannot be satisfied with SCSI's device (partition) name limit of 14. When is this going to be fixed. When is this problem going to be solved so that I can install where 9.2 was installed, or anywhere else for that matter? When is the kernel going to quit calling SATA SCSI? Wasn't it bad enough for the system to content with real SCSI devices mixed with USB devices without adding SATA into the mix? I just found a little annoying thing in Postfix 2.3.2 from factory.. There's a missing definition in the SPEC that disables cyrus sasl authentication. I simply added export CCARGS="$CCARGS -DUSE_CYRUS_SASL" to the %build block, and everything worked fine. We have an internal meeting every few weeks called "dist meeting" that discusses major technical changes in our distribution. Since it's not possible for most of you to attend it, I'd like to try an experiment and share the agenda before the meeting - and the meeting minutes afterwards with you. I'm asking for your feedback on the agenda and any comments that you have and will bring those comments into the meeting and raise the points you've made. Will this work? The planned topics for tomorrow's meeting are: * D-Bus 0.91 and PolicyKit/resmgr We just switched to D-Bus 0.91 and the question arises whether to continue to use resmgr or switch to PolicyKit. * Move to GNOME 2.16 The packagers have started already with the first packages, we want to discuss the timeframe for the move and the move of GNOME to /usr (from /opt/gnome). * SuSEconfig removal SuSEconfig is currently run after each package installation by YaST and is a huge bottleneck. Some scripts have already been removed and we have to discuss how to move on. * update messages general/conditional (e.g. bind) During update of packages they could notify users about changes via email and/or the SuSEplugger (until 10.0, this is not anymore in 10.1). Most of these are outdated and not really usefull anymore and should be removed. The question is how to handle situations like bind where config files get rewritten and the user should be informed if this fails. * Dropping UP Kernel on i386/x86-64 The proposal by the kernel team is to use only SMP kernels and no UP kernel. It's already this way on Xen - there is no Xen UP kernel. Advantages: One less kernel rpm. On 64bit there will be only two kernel rpms then, kernel-default and kernel-xen; and with some luck if paravirt ops works out as designed we can then later drop kernel-xen too and only ship a single 64bit kernel. 32bit could go down to two. Less QA. Less space on ftp servers. Less build time. Avoids a lot of problems with install kernel being different from final kernel. The i386 UP kernel e.g. doesn't support advanced APIC modes, which broke i386 installation of SLES10 on some systems. We've had quite a lot of bugs in this area over the years. Disadvantages: Will be slightly slower and bigger on UP systems. Most of the performance difference is fixed up by kraxel's LOCK prefix runtime patch. Memory usage will be up a bit on UP systems We would lose a few drivers which are BROKEN_ON_SMP. Usually these are long unmaintained drivers which are broken for other reasons anyways so it's not a big loss. Also we never had them in the SMP kernel and most modern systems run SMP kernels. [opensuse-factory] [Project Idea] Repository RSS Feeds

Hi all, I had an idea several weeks ago, mainly that the wiki page on additional repositories at opensuse.org was nice, but not really optimal. Especially for regular users, who really cannot be expected to go find urls and enter them manually into various package managers. Projects such as konvenientSUSE help, but are rather limited because repos are hard-coded. So, my idea was originally to use the khotnewstuff framework to allow users to open a little utility and just install repositories from a dynamically fetched list, complete with descriptions and ratings and such. However, after I discussed this idea with a couple SUSE developers, it was put forward that RSS was really the best way to go about this. So, I have investigated it a bit and my idea is currently the following: (1)Define a RSS namespace with repository specific tags, as the standard tags don't perfectly fit and would lead to confusion. (2)Write/Edit a library and client to fetch repository RSS feeds and display a repo list to the user, allowing him or her to add/remove repositories from their local computer based on the list. I have a client written that works with standard (non-namespaced) RSS feeds and I think the basic idea is sound. At this point, I just want to gather some comments from other people. My main concern right now is what sort of tags should be added to the RSS repository namespace and figuring out some way to handle mirrors. Hi, Is there a way to list all the packages belonging to a given group (e.g. System/Base) in CLI? I would like to check the diffs between the packages currently installed on my system and the packages that should be there. Some time ago, it was possible to list the packages belonging to a given group with yum groupinfo < given group> IIRC, but it doesn't work anymore (it seems that the files are no more splitted into groups in the yum headers). Then I must have installed seamonkey and some stuff while trying to get rid of the online updates during installation! Its never done that before but on 10.1 after I told it I would update it showed me *all* updates instead of ones relevant to what's installed and kept coming up even after installing all of the updates that applied to me. I had to click cancel just for it to go away and move to the next step. As was proposed earlier, maybe if only one type of application for each category is installed do not go to second level. It may be nice for you people who have 20+ internet apps but it takes us with a couple much longer. I don't neccessarily see everything bad about Ubuntu. Yes SUSE has Yast and I LOVE it (if it can be sped up) and other distros are at a disadvantage because of it. SUSE also has the next thing I love more than almost anything (besides actually working and speed ha) and that is polish..LOTS of it :). BUT that's not saying SUSE can't trim their packages more (IE not be a 2.8 GB default install just by choosing GNOME). [opensuse-factory] permissions for sound, dvd, etc

I would like to change the default permissions for the sound devices and the removable media. Right now (10.2 Alpha 3) the first user wins, meaning whoever logs on first gets the exclusive rights on the devices. Not very user friendly, except when you're the first one. So I tried changing the rules for udev as laid out in /etc/udev/rules.d, but to no avail. I managed to change the group for the devices, but not the permissions (from 0600 to 0666 or at least 0644). I then learned about resmgr and went and changed the file /etc/resmgr.conf.d/99-desktop.conf and added some rules for sound and cdrom devices. Still no success. The next stop was in/etc/PolicyKit/privilege.d. There is a bunch of files which allegedly take care of permissions for all kinds of devices. I changed the file hal-storage-removable-mount-privilege, but that did not have any effect on the permissions for my dvd drive or the usb stick. Before I finally mess up the hal configuration (I already checked: it's in /usr/share/hal and /etc/hal) I was wondering if anyone knows where I actually have to tweak my system to let the other users hear sound and mount dvd's (or at least play a video dvd with kaffeine & friends). I figured it's got to be somewhere between udev, hal, resmgr and PolicyKit. Perhaps with pam also involved? [opensuse-factory] Cannot install openSUSE 10.2 Alpha 3 on Itanium (hwinfo-related crash)

Hi, I tried a network installation of current openSUSE build (hosted on oss.sgi.com) on my hp workstation zx6000 but the installation process crashes just after downloading the root image. Here are the logs that I captured with a camera since this display is quickly replaced by a big red square telling me that the installation process failed: starting hald... ok starting syslogd (logging to /dev/tty4)... ok Starting ia32el starting yast... > hal.1: read hal data/usr/lib/YaST2/startup/First-Stage/F02-hwinfo: line 10: 2388 Segmentation fault (core dumped) /usr/sbin/hwinfo --special=x11 Probing connected terminal... Initializing virtual console... Unfortunately, once the red square replaces this screen, the keyboard is disabled, so I'm not able to swith to console tty4 to see the logs. I've performed several attempts. No luck. Using the safe settings or a textmode install didn't help. IIRC, the last working root image was dated around Aug. 15th. Is this problem also noticed on other architectures? If not, what can I try to help debug the installation process on Itanium? Hi, Maybe I'm on the wrong place for this, but it might be interesting even here: Let's assume the following (I think a not so uncommon scenario): - A user installs a openSuSE Version 10.1 - He changes the installation repositories to something like ftp://mirror.suse.de/pub/SL-Stable/inst-source and adds also ftp://mirror.suse.de/pub/SL-Stable/non-oss-inst-source Now come's one of the trickier parts: The upudate repo is pointing to: ftp://mirror.suse.de/update/10.1 What will happen when openSUSE 10.2 get's the 'stable' Distribution an dwill thus be linked in place of 10.1? ZMD will most probably install many packages from 10.2 (maybe even wished by the user) but the link to the update repo will still point to 10.1. The same problem is with MOST external repos, as most of them also contain the version number in the path. Could there something be implemented to have it point to a URL like: ftp://mirror.suse.de/update /%OSS-VERSION%, thus updating the links upon a relink of the stable tree? So my first question: - What's the best way in your eyes to get to the latest factory release? - Can I just install a 10.1 as used and then add the factory inst-source as a repository? A 'rug up' will then most probably install a lot of updated packages. My personal feature request for 10.2 set a symbolic link each time a CD/DVD is inserted with /media/cdrom. The link should always point to the last inserted CD/DVD. /media/SUSE_LINUX_10.1 is cool, but its hard to work with CDs on command line and writing documentation for Suse is also very hard. So please let's become cd /media/cdrom true for Suse Linux 10.2. Yesterday I made a complete update in the actual 10.2 alpha 3, and could'nt start the dsl connection, I got "pppd died, options error 2". If I try to reconfigure the dsl connection via yast, it closes when reads the configuration. With the network card, yast closes again. I downgrading dbus from *.92 to *.91 and the problem continues. The adsl modem is connected via ethernet. Hi everyone, we are in the process of going through all SuSEconfig scripts to assess their value/impact and to analyze different ways of solving the problems those SuSEconfig scripts address. In many case SuSEconfig.* scripts turn out to just be a "cheap solution". Let's try to reduce the number of SuSEconfig scripts to the absolute minimum! And try to find superior solutions! The first case that I'd like to fix is SuSEconfig.automake, which reads: --- #!/bin/sh cat /usr/share/aclocal/dirlist.d/* >/etc/aclocal_dirlist --- There are only two packages that place files in /usr/share/aclocal/dirlist.d/ -- gnome-filesystem and automake itself. To achieve the same, while getting rid of SuSEconfig.automake, I'd like to propose to move the above-named script to %postinstall / %postuninstall of gnome-filesystem and automake. Comments, criticism, better ideas? As I told about OpenSUSE 10.2 Alpha 2, it crashed the konsole (KDE terminal emulator). I installed Alpha 3 (I tried to upgrade, but there was some problems on glibc.rpm), and konsole crashes still. Actually Alpha 3 seems to be step to worse, since Firefox crashes also. Also automount (of my external harddisk where I keep my backups) complaint that it will not mount to uid 1001 (the first normal user). All what I have seen is very intimidating (for me, say for many others!). in short, given I have already compiled and running an application on my openSUSE computer, how could I make the others use it? for example, I use daily "makethumb.sh". Here are the minutes from our last meeting, Andreas * PolicyKit/resmgr The upstream Hal authors are preparing to require PolicyKit. PolicyKit is a system daemon, applications ask the daemon about permissions. This is a similar concept as resmgr. The question is how to move forward for our distribution. Will be further discussed next time. * Starting daemons by default A reminder: Daemons will only be started by default from their packages if the dist meeting has approved this. Otherwise the autobuild team is authorized to reject this. PolicyKit is a new daemon, it was approved to be started for now. * Move to GNOME 2.16 Not discussed since nobody involved attended, postponed for next meeting (or discussion via email). * SuSEconfig removal SuSEconfig is currently run after each package installation by YaST and is a huge bottleneck. Some scripts have already been removed and we have to discuss how to move on. The purpose of SuSEconfig was to not run one script several times during package installation but just once at the end. We plan to fix scripts that can be done differently, remove obsolete ones and the autobuild team will not check in new SuSEconfig scripts. A review of scripts showed that some are really obsolete, the first 5 scripts were removed already. We need a superior solution, e.g. some way to do delayed execution. This should also work if just rpm or smart is used. An overview of SuSEconfig is appended below. * update messages general/conditional (e.g. bind) During update of packages they could notify users about changes via email and/or the SuSEplugger (until 10.0, this is not anymore in 10.1). Most of these are outdated and not really usefull anymore and should be removed. The question is how to handle situations like bind where config files get rewritten and the user should be informed if this fails. In general, it is not possible to send emails from rpm install scripts. Most cases could be handled by the release notes but there are cases that cannot and we need a better solution to present this, especially since many people to not read the local emails. * Dropping UP Kernel on i386/x86-64 No objection by the dist meeting. This should be done for Alpha4. * Linker Options and Optimizations LDFLAGS="-Wl,-z relro" is now the default and works fine. The hash table optimization will be enabled in binutils and glibc by default as well. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SUSEconfig has around 4 classes of different scripts, the first two are the most common cases: a) /etc/sysconfig has two types of data. * data read by rc-scripts and used directly there * data used by SuSEconfig and spread over /etc/* or /var/* The second type is handled by one class of SuSEconfig scripts, called "CLASS-A". Solutions: - extend rc-scripts to do this - extend daemons to read /etc/sysconfig - ... b) directory index caches scripts that keep index files in several directories up to date. The underlying problem is that rpm can not trigger based on directory modification, but that's currently not in sight. In many cases SuSEconfig is just the cheap solution. A related problem is, that if you install 10 packages, you don't want to regenerate these indexes 10 times. Solutions: - call individually in each related package (the "install-info way") - error prone - many modifications to many packages (and over again for any change) - extend usage of these index files to update cache themselves - ... This type will be called CLASS-B below. Hi there, to continue the SuSEconfig clearance initiative, let's have a look at SuSEconfig.xdm. It's actually a pretty easy case, as the various parts just need to be moved to /etc/init.d/xdm and startx. I already talk to Stefan, who'll take care of this change. Bug #200299 has been submitted :) That's it for this week -- after looking into most of the SuSEconfig scripts, I already got a general idea of what's possible. Hey! I did a default with KDE as my desktop and now I want to try out Gnome. So I went to Software Management, selected the Gnome pattern and installed it. It installed fine but I can't seem to find it on the Session Type option before I login. There's Custom, Failsafe, FVWM, TWM and KDE on there but no Gnome. I searched on the wiki for some documentation about it but wasn't able to find any. [opensuse-factory] Current x86_64 Factory: Problem with hal/dbus?

I follow closely the factory distribution, but for some days now I have problems seemingly connected with the dbus-system. Especially it is no longer possible to mount removable media (apart from the old-fashiond "mount" command as root user ;). I cannot exactly pinpoint the date, but I imagine it started around the time when hal and PolicyKit became seperate packages. Problems: In KDE, I cannot mount removable storage (usb and firewire) any longer. A window pops up telling my that hal.something's policy doesn't allow mounting for UID 1000 (my user id). I can't even reproduce the error now, because I just did a reinstall of some packages, and now konqueror's "system:/media"-kioslave doesn't even show the hotplug devices any more :-( On a maybe related note, the kpowersave-icon in my systray is greyed out. kdbus is prone to long hangs and crashes, and if it runs, it only shows entries for "System Bus", not for "Session Bus". Some maybe interesting error messages: linux:~ # /etc/init.d/policykitd restart Shutting down HAL daemon done Starting PolicyKit daemon done linux:~ # /etc/init.d/policykitd status Checking for service PolicyKit daemoncheckproc: cannot stat /var/run/polkit-console/polkit.pid: No such file or directory The Packages hal, PolicyKit, dbus-1, dbus-1-qt (and so on) and resmgr are as provided by openSUSE factory for AMD64 as of today, August 15th. Hi, I had a similiar experiance and then I noticed that the Arch was not the same as I'm running. Are you running a X86_64? The Bash it offers you being available seems only to be there for i586. I've been trying to keep up to date with Factory, but every time I try an update, it fails for some reason or another. Hello, I rsync-ed this night and tried to install factory and tried to install on my Pegasos PPC. There seems to be a couple of problems with providers. I got a message that a total of 37MB of software is going to be installed due to unresolvable software conflicts :-) Then I checked, what's wrong, and got the following: - there is no installable provider for 'yast2-perlbinding' (it is actually there) - there is no installable provider for 'yast2-inetd' (it is actually there) - there is no installable provider for 'gnome2-gobject2' (I don't remember the exact name, but I could not find a package with the same name, it was missed by python-gtk) Bye, CzP

I'm trying to mirror 10.1 updates (and only these, at the moment) for local use. I could of course consider making it public, subject to size / bandwidth constraints, but not until it's working. The wiki section "SDB:How To Create a Patch CD" advises using rsync at ftp.gwdg.de::pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/update/9.2 I realise that 9.2 is well dated, but the structure has changed too - I think (looking at the files for 10.1 on this server, and http://en.opensuse.org/Mirror_Infrastructure) that I should be using ftp.opensuse.org. I wont revive a troll nor contest the new openSUSE name. But we have an history and a wiki and we must take care of all that stuff. How will we call the distribution in the wiki pages? what if we speak of 9.3 ? what if we speak of all of them? Hi, I was also very concerned when I saw the 'most annoying bugs' list today (as I epxected Alpha 3). The worst that can happen to openSUSE is having (again) a release with bugs like the updater in 10.1. Even though they are fixed now, it's still around and poeple installing without an internet connection most obviosuly run into it. If the schedule for 10.2 should be kept like this (which I think it should) then we should try to put bugs away instead of adding last-minute-features and packages. I just looked at http://en.opensuse.org/Patterns I don't see much going on there. Does this mean that this is the final proposal? I have added some, that I felt were missing. Even if they are not selected, I hope to keep the discussion going and we can't afford to get it wrong. The main thing I did was add some graphical enviroments (including CLI) and add office and games. The thing I miss most is 'normal' programs for the end-user. Also would it not be easier to use the current package groups as a start and then go from there? e.g. when I look at just games, I see: Amusement |--Games | |--3D | | |--Other | | |--Race | | `-- ... | |--Action | | |--Arcade | | `--.... | |--Board | `--... `--Toys |--Background `--... Seems like an awefull good place to start. This has been made over the years and I would think it to be a pity to just throw the knowledge away. Also realize that many people who use SUSE for years know where to look, so even if it is not going to be the main pattern, it would be nice to have a pattern "Ye Olde S.u.S.E. way" that contained the familiar groups people know. -- houghi http://houghi.org Personally, I think most sports fans are a little "gay". One for the _new things_ (patterns, Xorg 7...) and one for the _new releases_ of already used things (Kde, Gnome) I think the latter are already tested by they developpers when the first seems already in a very early stage. I'm disquieted by the "most annoying bugs" list and the _may be_ delayed Alpha 3. How can I do the following: Each time I run `yast, Software, Software Management` that I first run `createrepo /usr/src/packages/RPMS` so I don't forget to include extra files I downloaded. Hi people, I don't know if this is the correct list. I'm working on a project related with SuSE Linux distribution and we need to achieve some development skills on SuSE. I would like to know if there are any documents describing procedures on SuSE development. Now i'm interested on knowing the procedure for the creation of the images that linuxrc loads (root, rescue, etc...) because we want to hack on the installation and boot processes. I've been reading at the SuSE Linux SDK at Novell Forge but there is not so much documentation so I've started to download the SDK iso files but I don't know if that is what i'm searching for (basically documentation about building suse from scratch). Hello, I just updated my experimental laptop to current factory and fglrx to 8.27.10. It seems that I currently can't get the fglrx to work: When I run --buildpkg for 10.1, it complains that "module ABI majore versoin (0) doesn't match the server's version(1)", when I build for 10.2, i complains that "... - detected X.org 7.2.-1.2, required X.org 7.1.0.0" Maybe it would be a good idea to make sure that this doesn't find its way into the Alpha3. On http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/ftp/int_mirrors.html there is at least one mirror that is not active anymore: Belgium > Telenet. mirrors.telenet.be/mirrors/ftp.suse.com/ I know that I should mail the webmaster, however I think it might be better if the people who keep themselves busy with the mirrors could look into that page themselves and see what and if anything needs to change. e.g. Are Need any mirrors be deleted or added? Is the <Architecture> still up to date? Also a link to download.suse.com and/or download.opensuse.org would be great. I have nautilus-2.12.2-76 installed... Of coures it will not launch, it says "nautilus: symbol lookup error: /opt/gnome/lib/libnautilus-private.so.2: undefined symbol: eel_uri_get_scheme. I suppose since the EEL package was updated this would be causing the underlying issues. Any fixes going to be released for this? (SUSE_Factory repository). -- Ryan Lewon

I use Xgl + compiz under KDE. Every version I had has this bug: OpenOffice.org windows start larger than the available screen area, and need to be resized. They also start directly in the next viewport, not in the active one. In the active one there's only a few pixels of the left frame of the window. Also, yast sw_single always starts the same way. I have used 10.1, 10.2alpha2, Xgl from the distribution and Xgl from Compiz-Quinn repository. Does this combination work right for anyone? On a newly installed 10.1, the first update it's libzypp. That's fine. After downloading and applying that, there's another libzypp update! That's starting to be confusing. People start asking, didn't the first go well or what? After that, there's a rug update with the zen-updater. Only alfter all those are applied we have a working update system. Reiser4 was dropped from 10.1. What about 10.2 As namesys has a lot of (non technical) problems with some members of the kernel-list, they need support from the community to get reiser4 really adopted. I think Suse should still be willing to support new stuff, not as Red Hat. Reiser4 is now quite stable (not mission critical, but stable). For 4.1beta the compression plugin will give reiser4 double speed with half diskspace. Even the support of xattr seems now to be possible. Due to the change from *.sel to *.pak, create_package_descr will be changed. As this is packaged in autoyast2-utils, I wonder if either the newer autoyast2-utils rpm or create_package_descr will be released before Alpha 3, so I can check if it works with makeSUSEdvd. It was said that it might become available with CVS. When I try to run konsole on OpenSUSE 10.2 Alpha 2 (2xXeon 3.0Ghz, 1GB memory, x86 kernel), it crashes after some lines have been outputted. I tried "ls" nine times and then it crashed. My homedirectory contains files enough to get 56 lines, which gives about 500 lines. However, the History setting is 1000 lines, so the buffer has not overrun, or has it? Anyhow, the backtrace looks like System configuration startup check disabled. (no debugging symbols found) Using host libthread_db library "/lib/libthread_db.so.1". [opensuse-factory] fatory x86_64 Openoffice crashes with SCIM

Hi,all I've a problem about the 64bit openoffice 2.0.3. Seems it does not like Chinese Characters. Those i586 2.0.3 rpms work fine for me, while the 64 bit thing always crashes as soon as I type in a Chinese character throuth SCIM (or should I say SKIM) and then asks me about something file recovery. As soon as I click yes, it crashes ( disappears ) then comes up with the same question about file recovery..@&@##%#$^% Happens on both Writer & Calc. Can be reproduced anytime. PS. If I open a file containing Chinese chars. Crash-Recovery-Crash-Recovery-Crash-Recovery......While documents full of English chars are fine.
